Their tranformation from when they filmed the video for "I Will Follow" to this was amazing. In 1980 they were just kids, by the time of this concert in 1981, a mere one year later, they were rock stars.
The 80s were simply the greatest decade. Everything was so pure, with such raw energy. How they won over the Germans is simply magic.. Bono has such an energy.. Insane!
I remember collecting bootlegs of early U2 shows in the mid-80's, never imagining of a thing called the internet giving me the videos of these early shows. When they came to the US, I recall that they opened for the J.Geils band. When I saw them in 1984, the Waterboys was opening for them. Tickets were really cheap, too!
You are correct about them opening for J. Geils Band. A friend of mine went to see them (J. GEILS) in Tallahassee FL and came back with killer stories about that concert. About how no one could hardly understand what Bono was saying between songs because of his thick accent. But finally my friend deciphered that he was exhorting everyone in the somewhat sleepy crowd to GET UP and DANCE.
For those who really understand the feeling, I love all U2, but this is so s Epic, impossible for young People to understand it, nothing personal, but for us, there was no internet, this was so mysterius, so analog.
Exactly my feelings. The myth that formed around my early heroes, such as U2, was so exciting! Saving money to buy a new LP or a new magazine with interviews or posters of them, was such a huge part of my youth. Today, music has lost so much of its appeal and value...
Raw and Uncompromising. The world and the UK/Ireland were ushering in the days of post-punk. This was U2's hardest hitting time of sound. The world would wait for what they would become... One of the greatest bands of all time.
Recall seeing them at a college dance Early 85 or so- running videos. People just stopped dancing and started watching the video because they were so cool!
I bought this when it was first released and for me, it's never been bettered as an album. They've certainly written some great tracks since but this is THE album.
Mahalo nui(much thanks) for not having commercials!! It makes such a massive difference for the listening experience. Every time I watch this I feel so electrified!! Wish I was old enough to have seen this show. It sounded so epic. Much gratitude from Hawai'i for your work.
I've played the early studio albums for decades, practicing conservative use in later years being more selective when I play them, not wanting to 'wear them out'. Even so, these live recordings from that era are new to me, giving these songs a very welcomed freshness!
I threw a brick and twilight on this are unreal ...u2 early stuff is as good today as all those moons ago ..rember going to see them age 16 Liverpool royal court 81/82 the power of the sound was incredible

@@Warrogue1 I was stunned at Bono's charisma. I was a veteran concert goes by that time, and I had never seen anything like it. When he sang "Give me your money" people rained it down from the balcony at the Palladium.
Nice surprise for me that 'I Fall Down' and 'I Will Follow' were included this time, though! 😃 They'd omitted it when I recorded it off the TV onto VHS tape many moons ago.
MY LETTER TO U2-1987 I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono! I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage! I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations. Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year! All the Best! Gary Lagstrom
Saw them first time in 80 or 81. They played exactly this set. You could stand before the stage like almost 1 m away from the musicians. Those were the times.
