      I loved the concept and the complexity of the story, but I thought Alex Kingston was wrong for the part. Her personality and the Doctor’s shouldn’t really get on, since he hates guns and people knowing more about something than he does.

    River's life is so confusing. As she gets older and her future grows, the Doctor gets younger and his future hasn't even quite begun. Quite honestly, I think her life is the most intricately written story ever. It was planned YEARS before her real adventure even began. It was planned YEARS before the next Doctor regenerated. Years and years of actually character planning to create just a single story! It just shows how much attention to detail and correct storylines and time travel/time lines the writers can actually comprehend and construct. That's on of my favorite things from the show, because everything connects so well in the end that you basically slap yourself for not knowing it sooner. Throws you for a loop, but a hell of a good one!

      @@myrrthes Personally I would not count that. I think the original comment, and how I'd like to see it, would be River's first and last words to the Doctor. But now since I know her last words as a 'ghost' are "Goodbye Sweetie" and her first are "Hello Sweetie"... I'm unsure if I want to have the true first and last words or the first and last words River said to the doctor as the answer. Both are so sweet and heartbreaking. The true words are backwards for the Doctor's timeline with her, which makes it fucking sad, but her last words to the Doctor makes it like a last-ditch effort to laugh off her inevitable fate- holy shit I can't stop rambling no idea where I was going with this, Doctor Who is a sad ass series in general.

      @@QuackUp 1. wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff, so the Doctor could literally bump into River before she dies.
      2. You'd think with how much the show tries to show that weird human social standards don't matter (sexuality, gender, appearance, etc) the fans would catch on and learn to not care as much, or that the people watching would be people who are more open to that kind of stuff. I'm kind of surprised you've made it this far and kudos to you with all the gay stuff and the selfcest going on in this series already. How many times has the Doctor been kissed by another man? Or when the Master and Missy were aggressively flirting with each other and there was even a scene where Missy pushed the Master up against a wall and he literally asked if it was bad he was turned on by that.
      3. I'm not really judging you, because personality, as long as you're not a straight up homophobe and pushing all your ideals onto everyone I don't mind what you think. I'm just genuinely surprised you've made it this far and are still not comfortable with a lesbian relationship (When Bill was gay and had a relationship with Heather, Clara was bi, River's actor said River would not give a shit, there was also the couple Vastra and Jenny, and well even though Jack is a man, he's gay. All of these are canon btw).

    River Song was the most amazing thing that could have ever happened to this show. When you watch her whole story laid out in front of you like this, it makes you have those "oh yeah I remember that!" moments. It was confusing, seeing some of her past and some of her future completely out of order, but in the end, it all makes sense, and it's the most amazing thing. This show is great in so many ways, but so much effort was put into the River Song story, and I think it was the most great thing about Doctor Who.

      Well if she's a Timelord then she's blonde because their species genetics work differently than ours. If Timelords can change their face and every cell in their body it probably means their children NEVER end up looking like them. There would be no purpose for it. Because if the parent is dying and begins to regenerate, the child can't do the same. And if the child can't pick a face to resemble it's parents, then what the point in looking like them to begin with?

Her first Regeneration was in 1969, Amy was born in 1989 and River didn't start growing up with Amy until she met her at school. She didn't obtain the Vortex Manipulator from Dorium until she was River. Which means there's a missing 25 years between 1969 and 1994, where she had to have regenerated one other time; otherwise, she would've been an adult in her Early 30's when she first met Amy.

    Silence in the library and Forest of the dead are two of my favourite Who episodes and I can remember how intrigued I was by the whole River/Doctor reverse parallel relationship idea. However looking back now, I feel less than thrilled with what that original idea eventually became. All the writers really had to do was take note of the references to River's past within that two part story and expand upon those points in future River centric episodes. There was honestly no need for her story to bleed into a three series long plot twist. But no, she became a fan favourite so they stretched her origin out in episode after episode. Which ultimately resulted in overly confusing plot additions to an already somewhat audience confusing concept. Creating continuity issues that didn't need to be exist. It could have been one of the best sci-fi tales ever told on television, but it turned into something very sloppy and over intricate.

    • @tideoftime
      @tideoftime 9 лет назад +7

      ***** I wouldn't call it sloppy, nor over intricate (if anything, ironically enough, it needed to be *more* intricate than it was -- the lack of certain key intricate points is what led to certain narratives being not as good as they could have been). However, Moffat *could* have done a lot more with River than he did, and bogging her down into Amy/Rory's storylines as heavily as he did by making her their daughter detracted from elements that would have played out wonderfully for her (Example: although it would have been written/handled differently, the whole "splintered through time" subplot that was given to Clara should have *really* been *River's* -- that would have made her think that she had more of a "future" relationship with the Doctor across more incarnations than she did, and makes her realizing that her relationship with him ended in the Library even more poignant than it was originally. Even Clara's getting to see --albeit briefly -- the Doctor as a young boy on Gallifrey is something that again should narratively have belonged to River... it would have continued Moffat's borrowing of elements from "The Time Traveler's Wife" in describing/relating the Doctor's and River's relationship...). >sigh

    • @giantguy1321
      @giantguy1321 9 лет назад +1

      tideoftime By Intricate what I really mean is they tried to over complicate the concept of River by threading her into as many stories as possible because she became a fan favourite. Ultimately she didn't need to feature in as many episodes as she eventually did and I feel most of those episodes would have benefited more from her absence I agree with you that the plot elements of Clara's origin story would have felt better with River as the crux, but there's no use crying over spilt milk now.....I guess.
      It's just another problem I have with Moffat's writing as a whole. He tends to use such a historically vast and uniquely conceptualized universe in very small ways. A friend and I were talking recently about one particular subject. Why are all the Cybermen the Doctor meets in New Who from the same generation. Once they appear with a new look, that same look continues in every episode thereafter. He's a time traveller ideally he would come into contact with many varied designs of Cyberman from throughout history. Yet the same design of Cyberform introduced on a parallel world and designed by a single man (John Lumic) simply appear back in our reality two seasons later and in 1851. I mean come on Moffat, it would be good to know you at least attempt to think these things through.

    • @tideoftime
      @tideoftime 9 лет назад +3

      ***** I think you are misperceiving a few aspects of the ongoing narratives involved, particularly relative to River. It wasn't that Moffat had tried to shoe-horn her into as many stories as possible because she had become popular as a character -- it had *always been* his intention to have her as a recurring companion for the Doctor, due to her temporal subplot. All of the stories she appears in have direct, causal narrative links to her ongoing (albeit out-of-order) storyline, whether because it is linked to the Church, her birth/death, her growing up, or her losing her parents/the Doctor. That's not "shoe-horning" anything relative to the character. (Even the brief cameos -- beyond her regularly involved episodes -- in the second half of the 2011 season were merely set-ups for the season finale of that year, and therefore justified.)
      As far as the Cybermen's appearance (or similar-such production citations), I think some people tend to forget a very important thing about DW, as a series, that while not as true as it was during the Classic Era is still true today: *they don't have a big budget*. Once a particular amount of money has been spent to build a new Tardis control room, update a monster's look, establish that a character will be recurring, etc., that expense has to be *justified* by be used as much as possible during the production era it was created in. It's a sad fact of DW/BBC economics. Is that annoying to some of the more purist-minded of us (myself included, on occasion)? Sure. But it's understandable from a business POV. If DW had the proportional budget that, say, the Star Trek series of the 80's/90's had, then such considerations could be taken into account as the show would have the budget to cover "x, y and z". Unfortunately, they don't. #SadButTrue

    • @giantguy1321
      @giantguy1321 9 лет назад +1

      Well let me ask you this question. Is River's story done (considering in her last appearance was that of the "saved" version from Forest of the dead), or could she return? There were many references in both Silence in the library and Forest of the dead to her past involving the Doctor. Most notably acquiring a version of the tenth Doctor's screwdriver. This has since never been shown and is an aspect of the characters history and relationship with the Doctor I would still like to see.
      I simply believe that River's story could and should have been simplified. I don't feel many of the episodes in which she featured were ultimately needed because it was those very episodes that further added plot points that required her return. Whether or not the series of events were planned out well in advance or not, I still feel very let down by the results.
      Just because Doctor Who is science FICTION, that shouldn't mean it doesn't have to make sense within the boundaries of the universe that it has created.
      As for my Cyberman reference, I fully understand that budget may be an issue and I was going to mention that in my previous statement. However when considering budget I'm sure this will mean we will be seeing the previous Cyberman (introduced in 2006) return for future episodes? As using these older (already existing) costumes would save on said budget. But of course that wont happen because the Cyberman have now upgraded to walk with the gait of Robocop and adapt almost instantly to any defence like some low-grade Borg rip-off. .........Sigh
      . .

    • @tideoftime
      @tideoftime 9 лет назад +4

      ***** Again, I think you're looking at things from a POV that isn't supportable by the series. We were *never* going to see all of the Doctor's/River's relationship; in fact, we were only ever going to see highlights of it, with extra-narrative aspects (Easter Island, Jim the Fish, Picnic at Asgard, their final "date" at the Singing Towers, et al) being simply and neatly covered via expositive reference by River/whoever in conversation. (And to cite again, we *know* that the Doctor givers River the screwdriver at the their last date, and in the minisode "First Night/Last Night", we even see them right before going on said date... that covers that narrative well enough, certainly....) As far as not seeing River again -- we *can* see her again, of course, in an episode with 12, and even (no doubt to your chagrin) have references to them seeing each other at different points "short-handed" into a conversation (or not, works either way), as it can be an earlier version of her; equally, River's story can be *done* now, as both she and 11 ended on a (finally) equal footing, being able to say goodbye to each other at roughly an equal end of their relationship (11 knows practically everything, and River has been dead for anywhere from years to millennia on end).
      As far as the Cybermen and related details/citations, it also comes down to a point of how much "x" can be used/employed in the comparatively limited time they have for a season (12-14 episodes a season, with no real fixed narrative "home base", as it were, like with the various ST series or even as they were back in the UNIT heyday of the early 70's, so each episode is essentially starting from scratch each time, from a production POV). While physical costumes and such exist from a decade or more ago, the viability of "changing pace", as it were, comes with meta-narrative considerations: the broader, general audience can be thrown by shifting production aspects (as some, for example, apparently were with the 2014 season, resulting in the greatest degree of mixed reviews for a season in the Nuwho era, though that has as much to do with questionable narrative choices as anything else...). Keeping things within a given narrative/production setting *is*, in fact, both economically more sound as well as more psychologically "stabilizing" for more general viewers as opposed to the more hardcore geeks such as (presumably) you and me. (Again, to clarify: I don't disagree with you on that specific point, as such, I just understand why they *don't* adjust things to be more like how they were at "x" time in the real-world transmissions. Also, Moffat did give himself a nice scapegoat/window-wash vis-a-vis The Cracks: any real-world transmission that occurred before The Cracks (and even a few "afterwards") may no longer be as "true" as they were before -- various aspects of time/space may not be exactly as they were meta-narratively in the Whoniverse pre-Moffat. It's all very open, and that's Moffat's gift to future writers, so to speak -- he created a plot device that allows the relative past to be different (or not), allowing future writers to perhaps not have a tabla rasa to work with but at least some more room, as it were, to move around. A very important point that shouldn't be understated or ignored....

    I have been avoiding watching this video because I knew it would tear me apart emotionally. Why I chose to watch it at 2:30pm at work, I have no idea. At least I'm the only one in the office today. Thank you for doing this. It all makes much more sense to me now.
