Interesting optional rear lower control arm assembly for RWD sway bar when I worked on the chassis line at Buick. typical U-channel with cross-drilled holes and a w-shaped plate so that SB bolts wouldn't crush the arm sideways. On the outside a backing plate extended to the bushing bolts and had tight slots vs roomy holes to limit bushing compression to front & rear vs up and down as well. This helped to limit wheel hop. My '70 430 3-speed didn't have any of that and wheel hopped like crazy if I got on it just a little at 30 - 35 mph in 2nd gear. Good times.
For 'the 71 and '72 iterations of the GSX multiple colors were available and both the 350 and 455 could be had. I think in 1971 just over 100 were sold, and for '72 it was a mere 44.
Mustang obviously needed a better launch, but still did well enough to keep the race close. Most probably didnt notice that the Ford posted the highest trap speed...with a slightly smaller engine.
Yes, this was one of the better performing 1971 cars out there . Didnt know the compression ratio was so high on them. But those stage one 455's were legendary.
Many moons ago, I bought a 3/4 ton Ford truck that had a fresh 429 from a mercury marauder. $1500 . Guy said it had a mild cam. 850 holley. Huge electric fuel pump. Huge fuel lines. Off the line it was a tad slow. Once you rolled a bit she would blast off. Buried the speedometer , past 120 mph in 2nd gear. That truck was the proud owner of the first flourescent orange license plates in Ohio. My license somehow received 23 points while driving that truck. I scared the shoot out of many friends on board. I was never able to hold the pedal to the floor for over 6 seconds, even with all the beer in my veins. I tried though.
The 71'-73' Mustangs are my favorite, the only classic Mustang I'd consider, because of how sleek it is. Also, I think between these two cars it came down to driving abililty (A drivers race) because of how close the 2nd round was. I would've liked a 3rd round.
Well you can get one pretty cheaply (except for the ‘71 Boss 351) as the overwhelming majority of Mustang fans are not fans of that model. And that is being kind. They have been called just about every name in the book by the Mustang faithful. The only Mustang model to get more hate was the Mustang II. I think the new electric toaster oven SUV that was given the Mustang moniker may end up being the most despised “Mustang”.
@@danmyers9372 Hmmm interesting. Why is that? Doe's it have big blindspots maybe? I've never been a fan of the basic looking, plain jane, squared-upright look of the first gen cars. The one with the pinto skeleton included
If you gave the older engines modern aluminum heads, port efi, modern tires, modern syspension tuning, modern 6+ speed transmissions that shift super quick the older engines can still hang, that's why there is still tons of aftermarket for engines like the 351C as compared to something like a 4.6L Modular even though the Clevo left production in Geelong, Aus in 1982 and the 4.6L 2V left production in like 2014.
We're talking 53 years ago here, you'd think we'd be doing even better, put a 455 torque monster in front of a 6-8 speed transmission and see what happens just doing that🤣🤣🤣
Can we see 1970 against 1970 or older models..... After 70 most everything was losing power so sometimes the race is already won in pure stock. The 1970 Buick is a beast. I had a 1971 Skylark only a 350 auto but it got the job done. It wasn't the quickest off the line but after 60 it was no problem to make the speedo pass 120 and point straight down.
I've got a 71 skylark 2 dr that was my 1st car. My dad bought it new. 350 2 barrel carb. I'm retiring in 2 years and plan on getting it going again. Needs some work, but the body and interior is flawless
I used to whip on them Stage III & Stage IV Buicks with my 1979 Z-28 Camaro all the time. I had the low compression smog motor but I did have 110 HP Nitrous system and a 5 speed Dough Nash 3:73 gears
I knew that GSX would win, only Ford fan boys think Mustangs are fast when in reality they are much better suited for crowd surfing! I always loved Buicks from back in the day, had a '70 Skylark 350 4bbl when I was 16! Love that 442 you showed, had a maroon/silver '86 in the early '90s & yea that 307 was a boat anchor but the car was fantastic, that 350 should have been the motor in it from the factory ✌💖☮
@@hendo337 it was 1 year only because Ford developed it for SCCA production requirement & then dropped out the next year but as a street car it just couldnt compete with the Trans Ams, Z28s, Challengers & Cudas, hell I have seen some AMCs outrun Mustangs! I know I never lost to a Mustang GT from the late '70s up to late '90s in any of my cars like 3 Trans Ams, 1 Z28, 1 Buick Regal Ttype, 1 twin turbo 300ZX, 1 turbo 3000GT
There is another video with the 70 GS 455 Stage I went up against the Chevelle 454 LS 6. The GS beat the Chevelle in all three races. I think they were just so well balanced, the Buick engine is a lot lighter than the Ford and Chevy engines and my guess is they hook up better.
A Buick 400/430/455 is about 50 lbs heavier than a SBC. The o'all narrow exhaust manifolds are short and efficient, even with the stock vs Stage whichever irons. They tuck so nicely into narrow (hot rod, foreign sports car, etc) frames, and swap nicely into so many stock cars. Buick torque at low rpm lets you run taller gears, say 3.42 3.73 vs .390 - 4.11. Retired Buick tradesman who hired in putting carburetors on 350s & 3.8L V-6s in Factory 36.
My local Buick dealership sold a couple GS and GSX cars in 70 and 71, a friend of mine was the lot boy at the time and got his hands on all of them, he wouldn’t have been gentle. Who ever bought the cars, they virtually disappeared into a black void. The cars might have been fast, but nobody knew it because they had no street presence, the name Buick was never mentioned when guys were talking about muscle cars. The same can be said about 442’s, they were all bought by old men who were in bed by 9:00pm
It seems that American manufacturers knew that 1970 would be the beginning of the end, and launched their best cars before everything went downhill, never to return to the top. The strange thing is not only did the cars start to lose power, they also got progressively uglier, this Mustang is a huge downgrade compared to the 70, I can't think of any American car that got better looking from 1970 onwards, maybe the Firebird, but honestly I can't tell the difference between 70-73, 74 onwards less cool.

@gordocarbo never more truth spoken. I researched this 20 years ago for a college project. The reason for such insane cost compared to pre 2000 is government regulation. The requirements they have today are some of the toughest in the world. Most are unreasonable. The question becomes when is enough enough? When the general public can no longer afford a car? Are we already there?
Wie kann ich erkennen ob die Kette evtl mal übergesprungen ist? Ford hat ja oft die Zahnräder mit Nylonzähnen verbaut und die verschließen wohl sehr gern, sehr schnell
As us Buick racers say" When Better Automobile are Built Buick will build them. The almighty Stage 2 cars.. Don't even waste your Gas going up against them.
It is not just an appearance package, the stage 1 GTX BUICK had bigger heads, headers, and a hotter cam and was the fastest car you could get in 1970....road and track tested it and they said so.....also, if you obtained the stage 1 package you could have access to stage 2 aluminum factory ported heads which gave you 550 hp......
I did the Buick A body thing for 31 years, had a '70. These cars had exhaust manifolds from the factory but headers where very popular. Sorry to debunk a myth, but I must report that absolutely *without question* the 1970 GSX was 99% an appearance package with no special engine parts, trans, or rear end, and did not even have a VIN that differentiated it from a GS455 coupe. Sequence number, cowl tag, installed equipment such as the dashpad and plant code (in the case of Stage 1, all 1970 Stage 1s were made at Flint) are used to ID real ones vs GS455. Similar to how a GS455 Stage 1 has no special VIN either. It was a half-year, short production run model and did not get any extra power making goodies, you can check with Mr. Dennis Manner if you don't believe that. The spoilers and baffle helped handing somewhat but to what degree is debatable. The GS455 engines for 1970 were the SR code 455 and the SS code (nothing to do with Chevy Super Sports) 455 Stage 1, unless you somehow got your hands on the extremely rare Stage 2 parts, but the block code didn't change. Stage 1 had different ornamentation, heads, valve covers, cam, distributor and carb. Was an option on any GS455. GSX got a different steering wheel, as well as a unique dashpad and hood tach, aside from the unique graphics on the bodywork, and front and rear spoilers.
@@hendo337 that's true but if you went that very option you had also a stage 2 option with aluminum heads with porting by Buick. Buick only made 90 aluminum head sets for the stage 1 option, which turned into a stage 2 option, only available before August in 1970 because of insurance and congressional laws that session....
@@hendo337 hence, they were bigger heads as the intake valves were bigger and the exhaust side were bigger too.....they were bigger heads, they oversized valves weren't cut by anyone other than Buick!!!!!! What am I missing here?????! They were bigger than normal, hence stage 1 heads were bigger!!!

If you compare Buicks to other cars that had bright green colors spoilers popularity Buicks we're the stealth fighters that eventually appeared on the radar later when the doctors sold them as used cars ! The 429 CJ and SCJ were good on paper but they never live up to the hype when they hit the track.
I agree...the 428CJ was a WAY better engine on the street, and at the track.
Sure they did
This one performed pretty good
Yes, this was one of the better performing 1971 cars out there .
Cars and zebras... You are so cool
@@danmyers9372Throw the S650 on that list as well. Because it's extremely ugly! Especially in white. How that design ever got approved is beyond me.
@@danmyers9372 Hmmm interesting. Why is that? Doe's it have big blindspots maybe? I've never been a fan of the basic looking, plain jane, squared-upright look of the first gen cars. The one with the pinto skeleton included
It's a Buick they always run. It has far better looks over the Mustang.
Pure stock is next weekend. I wish I could go. Luckily, cars and zebras gives me my fix
What amazes me is that what we thought was quick then, is actually slow now.
Turn off all the driving aids
@@taxpayer2505You've got to find a 455 for it😮💯
I used to whip on them Stage III & Stage IV Buicks with my 1979 Z-28 Camaro all the time.
A Boss 351 is no joke, meanest small block between 5L and 6L from the era, nothing else came close and a Boss 351 was only sold in a '71 Mustang.
Hands down the 1970-71 GSX cars especially in Apollo White are the King of all muscle cars.
That heavy Buick has THE LEGS to always get away from the Mustang.
Not bad for such big boats. 😂
like the don pic on your thumbnail 🇺🇸💪👍
I could do without the appearance package as I prefer sleepers, but who would NOT want 510 lb ft @ 2800? What a beast.
another Buick GSX??? OH HELL YEAH!!!....honestly the gsx n the mach 1 from 1971 are my fav muscle cars
Never enough C&Z.
The GSX package was a performance upgrade. The arrow package was wind tunnel tested and did provide downforce.
I thought that mustang was a SCJ...its been around for a few years and is amazing
SCJ Drak Pack cars came with 4.11 gears and not 4.10 for whatever reason
But if this is a CJ, imagine how fast an SCJ could be
When are we getting Zebra’s?
It’s always cars with this guy…
Nice
There is another video with the 70 GS 455 Stage I went up against the Chevelle 454 LS 6. The GS beat the Chevelle in all three races. I think they were just so well balanced, the Buick engine is a lot lighter than the Ford and Chevy engines and my guess is they hook up better.
I read somewhere about 150 pounds lighter than other big blocks. Good weight transfer for sure.
@@hernandocortez6351 Absolutely
True. Engineer a few doors up from me, maybe then late 50s-60 had a W30 and 442. Early 70s
Nice choice for who you used as the "grandma" in the Buick. IYKYK 😏
Five-mile-an hour bumper mandates sure brought out the ugly stick.
I think some of the Mopars got better looking in the early 70's
This Guys Funny and
KNOWS HIS SHIT!
No he doesn't.....ask me why? I'll give you the facts.....I had a gtx in 2007, a aluminum headed monster....only 90 produced.

Come on back now, hear?
Mr. Zebruuuuh
That would be like buying a Hellcat today for 37 grand. Dear lord.
Shows how overprriced new cars are today,
@gordocarbo never more truth spoken. I researched this 20 years ago for a college project. The reason for such insane cost compared to pre 2000 is government regulation. The requirements they have today are some of the toughest in the world. Most are unreasonable. The question becomes when is enough enough? When the general public can no longer afford a car? Are we already there?
That mustang actually surprised me. I'm a Chevy kinda guy
First comment playboy what’s up? I tried to send you a picture of my car and it proved to be more than difficult. Help me out, dude.

I would have liked to see a BOSS 351 go heads up against the Buick Stage 1....!
Hoping the Mustang has “cobradangling bits“ hanging off of it! Hooray for sophomoric humor!
Three cheers! 🍻
Pretty sure that 'red room' was in fact a
'dungeon'!
Now yer talkin' my language!!
Oh, yeah, the cars are pretty cool as well!
Wie kann ich erkennen ob die Kette evtl mal übergesprungen ist?
Ford hat ja oft die Zahnräder mit Nylonzähnen verbaut und die verschließen wohl sehr gern, sehr schnell
I saw brake lights and a 90 mph trap speed for the Mustang first round. ?
As us Buick racers say" When Better Automobile are Built Buick will build them. The almighty Stage 2 cars.. Don't even waste your Gas going up against them.
Torque wins races, makes a car a pleasure to drive, HP sells cars...
Was that Kelly Bundy aka Christina Applegate, and who would of thought the mustang had a chance?
Surprised the mustang had the mile per hour advantage, a better launch might’ve been the difference
Not too many folk realize the 455 Buford weighed only 100 lbs more than a small block Chevy.
First comment about Nina Hartley
I'm thinking of building a 76. Buick Electra with a 455 Stage 1
Is that the stock hood on the GSX? It looks like it's missing something like scoops.
It's funny though in nascar 429 was hard to beat they had alot of top end and durability in a 500 mile race.
I bought mine in 1981
I weren't surprised Buick would win.
The only thing different about Stage 1 heads were the valves, any high compression 455 can have the valves swapped for larger like a Stage 1.
@@hendo337 Regular heads need a little clearancing so they aren't shrouded, but are the same casting number as Stage 1

Buick 455 stage 1 aka hemi killer !
In 1988 i had a chance to buy a 71 buick gs stage 1 for 3500 bucks. All original. I didnt have the cash so i passed. My loss
Love them but 13.38 with slicks.
That's a Stage 1 they made 75 sets of Stage 2 heads those made it 10 second machine
Heads wouldnt knock 2 seconds off.
Don't forget The War of 1812
If you compare Buicks to other cars that had bright green colors spoilers popularity Buicks we're the stealth fighters that eventually appeared on the radar later when the doctors sold them as used cars ! Motor trend in 1970 tested an automatic and that was the only clue that Buick was a monster in sheep's clothing 👍👍👍
Nina Hartley in Grandmas Buick wagon, LMAO!
