Guess I was wrong about Southpoint and the biomass being the big threat/ark cause now its the USRF's turn to be the center of attention. This just shows another glaring issue with how they run this story and how they can't just stick to one major plot point similarly to what we saw with the coalition falling apart and the Midwest Union invasion that then quickly disappeared and now there has technically been just a random squad of Midwest Unioners running around on the island from months, and the brewing tensions between the USRF and the Coalition with the Coalition's trade deal with the Southern union that both sides also forgot about. Also just like the MWU and SU the Canadians are a completely unplayable faction just run by USRF players so just like the MWU its just the USRF playing dress up fighting itself. These stories are just so barely thought out and for some reason they can't figure out how to use the factions they already have in game so they keep having to pull in more off screen factions. The absurd thing about it all is how they could of actually done this if they just decided to focus on the Southpoint story line they just created even if how they got there was extremely convoluted and forced.

    Southpoint leader here:
When I took over Southpoint in February of this year, the faction was in a deplorable state. I had been a CR for many months prior and witnessed firsthand the rapid decline. It reached a point where we couldn't even gather proper attendance for our story hosts-barely managing to muster 10-15 people. These numbers were dismal, and it's a miracle the faction survived that period. Our MR+ team was bloated with people clinging to their positions, resisting any significant reform, and forcing the faction into stagnation. By the time I officially became leader, I had already been running the faction as the de facto leader from my second-in-command position for many months, pushing for meaningful reforms with little success.
During the first few months of my leadership, I focused on removing unnecessary elements from the faction, optimizing it, and trying to attract Flashstormers, but again, with limited success. When the ATF staff team initially approached me about the story they wanted to pursue with Southpoint, I was hesitant and rejected their ideas. However, after Chad personally reached out to me, explaining that I would have full control over Southpoint's decisions regarding the compounds and how they interact with the Marrow (which we’re currently developing to give our LRs more identity), I saw the potential. I’m proud to say that the Biomass event, along with the Marrow and the Compounds, has played a significant role in revitalizing this faction. We went from meager host attendance to massive turnout, with a ton of attention on Southpoint. I was and still am happy.
Southpoint's turnaround wasn't solely due to the Compounds. Every decision made for Southpoint since February, including story elements, was entirely my own, and no one on the ATF staff team forced me to take those steps. Removing sects was my decision because I believed they represented a bygone era and contributed to the faction's stagnation and descent into CRP chaos. If you attended any hosts before December 2023, you would have seen how easily every single host could be derailed under the pretext of infighting.
I think the video has some valid points that I agree with, but this was my only issue. Overall, it’s a very good video, and I’m looking forward to more.

I feel like if they wanted Southpoint to become powerful enough to actually start instigating their little race war, instead of utilising one-off out of region factions that have little bearing to any of the story, they should have used a far more interesting and more shocking idea, something that is relevant to all factions. As an example I thought of on the spot, instead of acquiring a mysterious serum that just so seems to be able to fit a very specific niche, they were given military aid from one of the other big out of region players, such as the Canadians, the SU or even the MWU, with them providing funding and equipment so that they could take out their opposition, or at least soften them up for when they arrive in the region. However, Southpoint would have had their coup occur and would decide to redistribute their allocated resources for waging a war against humans and becoming incredibly hostile to outsiders and frequently ambushing patrols with the intent to demoralise the enemy to a point where their arc fits in with the current storyline of events whilst also still being something uniquely theirs. This would still fit the story without making a cheesy race war.

From an outside perspective and from the limited insider information ive gotten, it looks like chad was just so focused on building all the systems from the ground up in the first years that basically everything from lore, rules, atheistic, theme, and story got thrown to the wolves causing everything to just kinda blow up as everyone had their own idea on how to do everything.

  • @ChadTheCreator

Howdy, figured I'd offer my thoughts on some of these observations of yours. First, let me say I'm not responsible for most current eldritch/mutant lore or story. This isn't to say I think staff is doing bad or anything, I'm just setting the stage for the fact that these games are a behemoth of communal storytelling that I'm mostly nowadays ignorant about - as I toil away under the hood trying to keep the lights on and the engine running.
One theme I've been trying (and failing) to flesh out with ATF8 is that racism isn't just something people engage in on an individual level - it's a top-down system. Why would mutants be allowed to live in an area where they're clearly hated and it would make more sense for them to be ousted if they're such a threat? The answer is clear when you know the signs: the elite want the cheap labor and a way to bring down a human worker's bargaining price - but most importantly they want a group to point the finger at so the abused lower-class humans can focus their rage on THEM, instead of the ones running the show. It makes sense you feel the way you do about mutant racism in the game - it really DOESN'T make sense on a reasoning level but in the power & control sense, it does. This whole chunk of the video was fun to listen to because I felt like I was listening to a character's epiphany about mutant racism, albeit OOC lol. It can't be denied however that there's also a meta gameplay element to it all - it's just more fun to have risks and conflict. Granted, I think even being able to notice that's what's happening takes storytelling that's a little more on the nose. I think if I were ever to try to explore a theme as specific and self-discovery based as that, I'd have to make the game more like Deep Six than one like Wintertide. The main reason IMO that game's message came across is because the radio announcer was practically throwing it in your face. Still, any misunderstandings in core themes are ultimately on me.
This is where my opinions start to get a little meta perhaps. The mutant thing is definitely NOT a full allegory for irl racism - they turn into actual monsters for god's sake. But I think these games take elements of human nature to their extremes to show what's hidden at the core. Could a nuclear war happen? Probably not, but war does happen, and nations are filled with greedy and powerful people willing to risk countless lives to gain more power on the chess board. Could a town on a barge exist? Theoretically sure, but it's not the most practical thing. Really it shows how far humans are willing to go to establish a caring community even in bleak times. Does anti-mutant racism make sense? Not really in a practical sense, but it benefits the rulers tremendously (on both sides), and the added fictional element of stasis and eldritchism only proves that all of it COULD be handled peacefully if the right people were in charge - not to mention this major exaggeration further proves how much nonsense irl racism is - at least until you realize WHO benefits from it.
Again, I think this was a misfire in terms of storytelling a little - that's on me. It wasn't explained well enough and I think exploring these themes in an ATF game is a little too close to home for some people who play the game. I was an isolated kid and I used my own ATF games to escape into another world, and it makes me happy that ATF/LOTA can be that escape world for other people too. Part of me hopes people come out of these stories with a better understanding of world politics and social issues, but I'm also split because I know a lot of people just want to come home at the end of the day and not be confronted with something they might be facing irl. Mutants ATF1-7 were basically half mindless bullet sponges and half interesting fleshed-out characters. With ATF8 I tried dissecting that idea and amping up those factors into two distinct classes of mutant. I think that unfortunately made the themes a little too real in some ways and offered a little less storytelling opportunity in others. I think at some point I started to become uncomfortable with the implications of mutants in ATF1-7, but the more I think it over the more I feel at peace with the idea that it's all fiction anyway - we can have inhuman monstrosities that simply need to be taken down violently, we can have humans with green skin, we can have everything in between those two and it's all fine on a meta level because it's all about telling YOUR story.
Anyway, that's my rant. Nice video btw, always enjoy hearing video essays on these topics.

@@ChadTheCreator Chad, I entirely get that the old 2032 timeline as you made it when you were a kid made zero sense. Not saying I don't. I am saying that making it a 2045 timeline because "I want to create that same timegap" is going to be less of a good idea as you're imagining it will be. If you want any advice at all here? Go back to starting the timeline at 2020 and have the nuclear war start at 2032. Rewrite the lore between those two set dates and revise what you already made.
Attempting to start over from scratch inherently will result in failure; ATF-8 suffers from being a mainline game used as an experiment. The X.5 Timelines were better for this. ATF was almost the only game on Roblox which gave a sense of post apocalyptic grit that alot of people wanted. Now with the recent roblox policy changes we can't even source that from fangames because the ATF title is considered a "flagship".
Tl;Dr: Not saying just "go back to the USCPF and CDF lol" I'm saying maintain the 2032 dates and work between there. I didn't even much like the CDF and I thought the USCPF was a stupid naming system. I'm just saying keep with the closer dates because they're better for grit.

The mutant racism never made sense to me.
When I first read it, I thought it was just a thing similar to Fallout's ghouls where: "oh they can be a threat at any moment so we ban them from our towns and treat them less-than-human".
But with ATF Mutants it just.. isn't like that, you got so much preptime when they start turning that you genuinely don't need to have any form of racism.

I play as a mutant most of the time while I play ATF8
I agree that the biomass, this time around, just felt lazy and not completely fleshed out like it felt back in ATF7. The whole race war also just felt rushed, especially with the "unknown imaginary people" thing. I wish some real small faction or group of people could've been involved instead. I don't enjoy having to rp arguments with human characters because of my oc's race. It's repetitive and starts to get boring after a while.

technically mutants arent a species because, assuming they are fertile, halfbreeds exist. if two of a different species with similar enough bodies (e.g tiger and lion) breed, they can make an infertile offspring. If a human and a mutant bred and produced a halfbreed, that would mean they aren't different species.

At this point I have no idea where the plot is going, I was sure from biomass and south point syrums and the such that south point and the mutants alongside the biomass was gonna be the main threat for the coalition and USRF. Then came the Canadians…………there was honestly a much better way to carry out a war arc for the USRF by involving mutants. (The Alumni suffers as well, first was the Halo sites, like alright so that’s the main plot for the faction now correct? Then comes the coup in the ranks and the current state of affairs, then they proceed to leave the faction in the dust as well as the mutants rising up so they can introduce Canadians. Too much stuff for the average roleplayer to keep track of while role playing. Oh and not to mention the Canadians come armed heavily as well with aircraft)

I think eldritch mutants CAN work if they act as a sort of side content to an overall dish that are the bigger mutant threats, similar to how Descendants worked but just different in presentation and execution. Problem is that chad and the team kept on throwing everything down the bucket of idea slop for ATF 8 and tried to see what worked without considering what worked previously for ATF 7.
