    Multiplayer had such huge potential.
    Owning land/houses and buildings (businesses)

Huge expansions on the bounty hunter/hunting series.
Endless amount of online missions which could of tied in with singleplayer. (bank robberies etc.) Not just 4 missions.

I am so pissed at the bank robbery thing. The stereotypical western things just don't exist in online. You can rob one bank in the story and thats it. You can steal stagecoaches via the strangers but they don't really have a good story or setup. Or just robbing the good old classic store isn't even possible. Not to mention the bounties you get are insultingly low. 5ct for murder is really sad.

Create new games to be multiplayer, don’t just take single player games and turn them into multiplayer. Or if they must, at least give the solo gamers enough to work with for 5+ years if online is going to stall the next release.

The list is almost endless.
Then it came out and it felt barren, empty, with hardly any of those things in the game, and the ones that were weren’t properly incentivised. The award for completing missions was pathetic and there was no consistency in the game’s economy at all.
Just makes me sad to think that they had a home run on their hands, all they had to do was swing for the fences, and they just didn’t.

    This will be long.
The 2 biggest issues with RD2O was the lack of exclusivity of roles and how they decided to solve the player to player issues. You don't solve a multiplayer issue by introducing systems that enforce solitude and reducing interactions with other players. You do it by giving different venues of interaction, which they had a perfect foundation with the roles. How these roles don't focus more on player interaction is beyond me. The lure of being a bounty hunter is ultimately to hunt other players, not NPCs. Bounty hunter would have been the anti griefer role. To handle griefers, give them an outlaw role where you can control their expression by channeling their actions towards gameplay rather than personal attacks because they are bored. How traders can't buy, sell or exchange items with other players is also beyond me. They should have had much more exclusivity with regards to characters and roles. Its great that each role has special and unique abilities and items, but because you can be all roles at the same time it doesn't quite matter. They should have had one major role per character, like the trader and have that expand into moonshining, or the naturalist expanding into ranching. This along with foucussing on player interaction through the roles would make for a never ending interesting experience.
Picture a scenario where the naturalist who has access to special hunting abilities and tools, gets pelts and trades with the trader, who has the special skill to turn these resources into goods and can sell different items to players and in game stores. And outlaws who have special abilities like to hold people up and gadgets to intercept these goods while in transit. This role can expand into collector, which should just be robberies/bulgrary. The bounty hunter should be able to get hired as a bodyguard for these trading trips and can collect bounties on the most infamous outlaws.
Honestly such an ecosystem would generate endless opportunities for fun. Griefers would have a more meaningful way of interacting with others while anti griefers are now incentivised. Those who like to keep to themselves and just hunt and maybe run a ranch would be naturalists while those who look primarily for profit would be traders who can expand into even owning some of the stores and hotels where other players can come and trade or hang out. This would be amazing also because you could have different characters for these different roles as we all know sometimes you wanna be an outlaw other times the moral hero with no name. Sometimes you want to just hunt and other times you wanna make some money. So just switch characters.
Once Rstar began to implement systems that focused more on isolation to deal with griefers rather than incentivising interactions through defined and satisfying gameplay mechanics, the game began to die. Honestly if i wanted to play solo and not interact with anyone, then theres offline.

@@matthijsverver7820 right ? I could have sworn we would get at least some variation of these ideas. I know it’s challenging to implement but man they have such solid foundations to do so, it seems the only challenge would be optimization. They already have systems in place for ranching, hunting, burglary, the honor system and much more that they would only have to implement. The issue was not so much griefing, it’s that the most dynamic and engaging method of interaction with another random player was to shoot them and voice chat. That was pretty much it. The pay off for deliveries or intercepting them was so low that when it happened it felt more of a chore to deal with it than an engaging gameplay mechanic. I also think a posse of 7 is too big.

The tragedy of RDO is that there is so much untapped potential that was completely wasted simply because it wasn't GTA. They could have added heists, properties, stuff to actually spend money on, etc. The single player game is so phenomenal but the online game is just bland and largely empty and the roles boring and monotonous for the most part. This game could have been great had they just supported it a bit.

We’ll just nerf the rate at which you get them, then add two more versions of micro transactions in the game! I’m willing to bet it was abandoned because they didn’t see the level of success with micro transactions that GTA did. Probably because themed items were so limited in RDO vs GTA. I’ve played since the beta, because there is truly no other game that is like it.
Red Dead Online is the only way to really feel like you are a cowboy and get that “Wild West” feeling. It truly makes you feel like you have the outdoors at your fingertips. Some of the mechanics are very well done and well thought out, like player ability cards and gunplay. The scenes this game presents you with are breath taking at times, but many of the most beautiful towns just feel so empty now. There are no central player hubs, no community activities, no custom games, no new guns, etc.
At launch, there were hundreds of player roaming this huge world, with simplistic PvP bar fights and town sieges, but afterwards many found that they had nothing to do without PvP. My friends had quit early on because the only way to make money was through hunting one bear every 15 minutes. Rockstar didn’t fix this money issue until an entire year later. There simply wasn’t enough content at the very beginning to keep the community really engaged, and because GTA was such a cash cow, they completely dropped this game early on.
For the past few years, all anyone has really been able to get out of this game is a beautiful nature simulator.

The problem is that GTA made idk 500millions in the same time. From a "short term" point of buiseness it makes sense to support the bigger game, but if they would have given just the tiniest amount of love to the game, they would have been 3 to 4 times the money. 90% of the players would buy houses with real money, they would buy DLCs but R* was ignrant and greedy. "Better 10millions today thn 300 million next week" + the problem GTAO also has, a broken economy.... In GTAO its Sharkcards in RDO its Gold. Its real money as an ingame "bonus" in a system that has an ingame inflation beyond imagination ....that itself is insane. BUT what di R* do? GTAO = me make the sharkcard more expensive / RDO here is a 3rd way to pay = Capitale = completly useless but anyway

    What you didn't mention:
    1. Since the beginning, we recieved no communication from Rockstar about anything with the exception of the occasional, "We hear you and we will be releasing something soon" post. Yet, despite these they never actually addressed any of the issues brought up from the community, which brings me to my next point you didn't mention...
    2. Broken Game Mechanics and Bugs at launch with no word on fixes. This actually continued well into the eventual launch of Frontier Pursuits. One such major bug was animals would not spawn in the world. Especially considering on of the major roles introduced (btw, Frontier Pursuits was released long after launch after droves of people already abandoned the game because there was little reason to play past the incomplete story) was the Trader Role which required hunting. This was not fixed for months even past that date. However, you know what was fixed pretty quick?
    3. Player Exploits were "fixed" and punished within days (sometimes hours) of being discovered. Whether it was the infamous Infinite Cougar Exploit or the Collectibles Location Map, anything the players found that actually benefitted the players was corrected almost immediately, and Rockstar would mention it, but ignored the real issues which drove players to find and take advantage of these exploits in the first place.
    4. GTA Favoritism. You did mention that GTAO got more attention, yes, but what you didn't mention was just how much. Where they would get constant content and bonuses in their weekly updates, RDO recieved little to nothing. At times the best we would get is a new excuse to sRockstar. world money, but no real reason to. Again, all of this comes with no word from Rockstar.
    5. Two years of no significant update. You mentioned Blood Money. What you didn't mention was that it came after two years of no real update. Frontier Pursuits was the only real update we got. The Naturalist update was the update that fixed the animal spawns and introduced a few new minor upgrades. Then absolutely nothing. Finally, we get "Blood Money" with Rockstar giving us a minor bone by teasing "a major update," but what did we get? A new currency to grind which can only be spent to unlock new story missions, and the infamous currency was so rare to find that you ended up spending real world money just to get it, which was an option advertised from the beginning. Frakking CAPITALE...
Rockstar promised an Online Mode that would rival GTAO, and drip fed us just enough to keep us hoping for more. They never intended to do anything with the game and that is clear through their actions. The last year has been the biggest proof of that, in fact. "We hear you and promise great things coming" in response to savereddead. Then a few months later, "Just kidding, we're just telling you we're done." This game has been on lifesupport since day one.

I think it's all about the revenue. I think the discontinuation of major updates is not coming from number of players but from the number of players that are buying gold in the game. Rockstar made a huge mistake from the beginning letting players to get an insane amount of gold per day doing daily challenges. I remember when the first lockdown started in March 2020 being stuck home I was playing this game and I used to do around 15 full gold bars a day, now o have over 600 gold in the game and around 300k dollars and have nothing to spend on..
Some time later they realised that any major content they add is not good in terms of profit and that players have enough resources to buy anything without purchasing microtransactions; which makes me asking you.. : Is there any business without profit ?

Honestly, it really makes me depressed that Red Dead Online failed. I absolutely adored Red Redemption 2 and I was so unbelievably excited for the Online mode - and as soon as it released and I experienced it for a few days, it was a real bummer to feel disappointed over it. Returning to it later, and I still felt that disappointment. GTA Online was largely successful, as was, more importantly, Red Dead Online (1), so why did Red Dead Online (2) fail? Maybe I should return to it, but now I don't have any friends who play the game. The world is absolutely beautiful and a joy to explore, so to do so with friends was just like a dream - but then, when realising there was a lack of heists, properties, and so forth, it felt as if the roleplay element just wasn't there. So yeah, it's a real disappointment, and I would refute your statement that the reception was positive in the Online Beta - I don't remember the feedback being over-the-moon by any means at all. I don't know, maybe I was just feeling fatigue after playing RDR2 for a month and a half beforehand. Maybe I'll return to it someday, because as much as I feel a lingering dissatisfaction to towards the mode, I do admittedly miss that world (I've only played RDR2 once, as I only play games once often), and would love to explore it again, with the fun bonus with other players - as you beautifully said, Jake, an escape :)

I actually think Rockstar didn't really consider the slow burn of this game. I waited a long time before I even bought it. I know a lot of people who did the same thing. I played through the campaign for the first time in 2022. It's one of the best games I've ever played. I joined Online and am still playing. I think if they not only supported game updates, but also continued to promote the game, they'd see slow and steady growth.
That being said, I think in the long term video game culture might change where rather than focusing on 1-3mo sales or 3-6mo sales a game might be measured like No Man's Sky in its long term ability to generate new and sustained players. I'm getting a bit old as a gamer but when I was a kid new games came out every few months and we'd move on quickly. These days I've got games like GTA5 and Skyrim that are about as old as my nephews. I've played games so long they started playing them too.

I remember a while ago a bunch of these big AAA companies were like "don't blame us for putting loot boxes and microtransactions in our games because people buy them, we're creating things that there is a demand for..." but now if people get sick with all the "games as service" BS and don't buy it, Rockstar doesn't release a great single player expansion (Undead Nightmare 2, etc) instead they just shelf the whole thing.
Maybe if they focused on GTA as their big continuous service, and also released great single player titles like RDR2, Bully 2, LA Noire 2 and Max Payne 4 alongside GTA Online, they'd have a lot more success.

    • @PICFL1

Success isn’t the issue they are legitimately the most successful gaming company, its the fact like you said they shelve stuff almost as a punishment for people being upset with them. Like when they outsourced the GTA trilogy which ended up garbage so because it got bad reviews they shelved a GTA 4 and RDR remake. They are going in a really bad direction, thats why most of the company higher ups left

It’s very unfortunate Rockstar doesn’t see the potential RDO has. My friend and I even dressed our characters up in simple attire and chose a relaxing and cosy place up in the mountains to “live out our lives”, then we turned off the game never to start it up again. It’s dumb but it puts out mind at ease a little. RIP Red dead online, thanks for the memories.

Have not played the online for some time. Just game the story a replay though, I missed so much the firs time through. Game was great, graphics, mechanics, etc. For me it was those certain players that went out of their way to destroy you...shoot your horse and run off, wave hello then follow you around for days murdering you. I get that was a big part of their online experience. Some of us, well me, loved the trapping, hunting aspects. I would say hello to other players and continue on my way tracking animals and trying to get all the outfits. It got to the point Id have to quit out of a server and rejoin, just to get 2 seconds of peace. I would never expect any other gamer to change their playstyle for me, but if you see me not griefing you, or maybe creeping thru the woodline after some stupid pelt...maybe just let me be. Not like I was Rip'n your horse or crew. That's what killed the online experience for me.

I joined the online game when it first came out because I thought it would be fun to play further in the world. Unfortunately, my enjoyment only lasted a short time. At first, it seemed that players were being polite and having fun, but rapidly the trolls showed up and made it almost impossible for a player of my caliber (Look, I admit I'm not great.) to be successful. That's just not fun.

I'm surprised Rockstar didn't care for RDR2 Online; it would have been successful if kept updated, no doubt. So, it does surprise me, and I heavily question, why Rockstar didn't bother updating and staying dedicated to it. They would have had two massive money pools rather than one. There's no evidence for a lower player count being a worthy factor to argue why Rockstar didn't bother updating the online mode when the beta rolled out - more updates over time would have created more attraction, attention, and a naturally larger playerbase.

I really enjoyed this game. My brother got it for me on a Steam Sale for $5.00. For 5 bucks it is an absolute blast. Regardless I would later buy Gold Bars in game and enjoyed the use I got out of those too. Despite the fun I did have, I always wanted more. Be that a better and more expansive story (like a range war), the return of "Undead Nightmare" except now across a bigger and much wider world, the ability to go into all those pretty looking buildings in San Denise, etc. Problem is I don't think players spent enough to justify the production cost of any new signifigant content added (that or the game's writers just did'nt know what to do and did'nt want to add any paranormal elements like Undead Nightmare II because they take themselves seriously or some stupid bullshit like that). Not that the RDO world ending is because of players not spending more money on a game they already bought. Instead I just think GTAO was more popular (no idea why) and apparently the safer and more profitable bussiness model I suppose. Then again, the failure of their Classic GTA Rereleases might have something to do with them diverting reasources. Aww well, looks like our time is up partners. World don't want us no more. Takes the fun out of the game. The prevalencey of the hacking and egregiousness of the types of hacks being able to be used was just horrible. (Like a hacker being able to join a server and just crash everyone on it. Or just cause them to blow up continuously forever...)

In a way it is understandable what Rockstar has done. , I checked the online player count numbers of GTA 5 compared to RDR online and my jaw dropped. 180,000 concurrent players compared to roughly 4,000 speaks for itself. Even at release , the player count of RDR online did not exceed 20,000 so it being abandoned / killed it is not exactly the reason for poor player numbers, rather the fact that it is a relatively niche product / genre. It makes sense from an organisational , resource driven perspective to funnel most resources and development time into GTA 6, which undoubtedly will break countless records.

I'm a late-comer to RDR2 having bought it during the pre Christmas sale on Steam last fall. Played through the SP, and half way through the 2nd round. For something different I hopped on RDO a few nights ago and spent about 4 hours online...and ran across only 3-4 real people in my travels. Explored Valentine, Lemoyne, and Saint Denis and the world was pretty empty, so it felt more like just playing some different SP missions since there was no interaction with any real people. Guess I missed the hay day...lol.

  • @uselesslysexy

The main issue for me with RDO was I felt held back. I recall trying to start the Naturist thingy and think I needed other players to progress, IF I'm not mistaken. Its a similar problem I've had with GTA Online as well. But perhaps the biggest difference is the amount of content and pace. You can always hop in GTA and do 1,000, 000, 000 things. But I think RDRs pace is too slow and spread out to be able to hold peoples attention online. More content could probably have helped. I remember seeing people riding around on Zebras in the previous version. I've never seen anything like that for RDR 2. This game I believe would have been better off with story expansions rather than trying to recreate what they've accomplished with GTA online. Nevertheless, the games a masterpiece for sure. I think the timing of the release and perhaps covid may have lead to them having to decide to drop this and focus on the next big blockbuster they have in store.

RDO would have worked better, at least in my opinion, if they actually leaned into the idea of making a camp, and forming a gang, have the gangs be NPC style characters, in the vein of the story, where each member has some specialty, or unlocks some activity, one that finds marks for houses to rob, one that lets you set up road and carrage ambushes, one that allows you trade furs and pelts, one that allows you to break and train horses to get more money, ect, ect. Have it be that at the start, players can only have 1-2 of these characters with an unupgraded camp, but with the ability to get say 5-6 out of 10 of these gang members. After you reach say the 3 gang member mark, have another character be introduced that handles bank robbing, train hijacking, gun store robbing, basically your big ticket items like the heists in GTA online.
At least in that manner, you can have NPCs to do activities with, that could then be replaced by players when you form a posse.
If you really wanted to make some flavor for them, make a high, neutral, and low honor versions of the gang members, add in some varients, say one style from Valentine, one from Saint Dennis, one from Annesburg, and one from out west. You would have 12 variations of one character, times 10 characters, 120 variations of gang members you could pick from, and have 72 to pick from (for a 6 person camp).

Obviously it’s really popular, I just don’t understand how you can invest tons of time into the game play of committing crimes, running over people, shooting it out with cops….like that’s fun to do a couple of times but after that idk one man’s trash is another man’s treasure huh?

With how Rockstar has been going about things these last couple years, I think they're going to monetize anything they can. Understandably a company is there to make money, but, there's a line that needs to be drawn. Way too many once great developers are going in a downward spiral that's either going to cripple gaming for years to come, if not ever, or they're going to demolish themselves. Then you've got the final option, enough sheeple still buy into it, dump mom's money into predatory monetization schemes, and it's an endless cycle. Countless players will see their favorite IPs washed down the drain for the sake of raking in a few extra dollars, all while they continue to exploit the market and make it much, much more difficult for any smalltime dev to hit AA or AAA. It sounds incredibly pessimistic and it honestly is, but I've seen what's happened to so many devs, especially when corporate greed is involved or "quota" seems to have been set by either their publisher or possibly shareholders.
