  • Senior Editor Zack Courts is always arriving to office after his commute with a bunch of opinions about the bike he’s riding. Too much this, not enough that, and occasionally has some decent insights. We thought some of it might help consumers or entertain enthusiasts, so we strapped a camera and microphone to the side of his helmet and told him to turn it on when he leaves his house. A lot of him talking in his helmet is complaining about drivers, yelling at red lights, and wondering why billboards aren’t more expensive. But sometimes he actually talks about the bike, and those are the parts we keep. Got a bike you would like to see discussed? Let us know and we’ll send him home on that one next.

    It's no secret we're always trying to get our staff to work a little harder. Especially the ones that always seem to have too much to say. "Write it down!" the boss yells, exasperated. Senior Editor Zack Courts is a classic case, always arriving to office after his commute with a bunch of opinions about the bike he's riding. Too much this, not enough that, and occasionally has some decent insights that we thought might help consumers or entertain enthusiasts.

    Zack, I know this is an old review and you've likely realized your monumental mistake by now. You arrived at the entrance of the Motorcyclist Magazine offices and you made no effort to try to back it in. As a Tuono owner, I all too well understand the intoxicating power that the v4 engine can have and how it can lead to momentary lapses in judgement. I hope you have seen the light and won't allow this egregious oversight to happen again.

    "This is the best part right here, leaving a red light. * Does 90mph not even trying *." And that is why I can't have a Tuono. My license would burst into flames in no time....

      This is the same reason that I've limited myself to my 200... aside from the fact that I can't afford a Tuono. I'm a throttle happy man, and my 200 let's me be as throttle happy as I want without breaking 90 mph.

    • @joevidya
      @joevidya 6 лет назад +1

      I'm interested in the new Aprilia Shiver 900, The Shiver 750 was the Tuono younger brother but the Shiver 900 is the 750 hitting puberty.

    • @cornervillain838
      @cornervillain838 6 лет назад +7

      To hit 90 on a 200cc bike you'd need a step downhill and a strong tailwind lmao. SO I'd say youre in the clear in that category

    I own a 2016 Tuono 1100RR & it is an amazing motorcycle. Totally agree with the feedback on the quick-shifter (which operates as smooth as butter) as it does come into its own on the highway or when your riding hard around twisty roads. The fueling gets better as your break the bike in especially riding at lower speeds (15-20km). I've had it for 3 months & now given its first service at 1,000KM and let me tell you that once you hit over 7,000 revs it turns into a different bike. It's a monster. It has been built to go fast no doubt & moving this above 7,000RPM into 10,000 from 1st - 2nd - 3rd - 4th - 5th it is as close as I'll ever come to riding a MotoGP bike. The chassis is brilliantly built and the balance it provides is sublime. It makes me a far better rider than I am & that alone speaks to how well this bike has been guilt. If any of the readers here are thinking about getting one.............you won't be disappointed.

      how's the slow speed tight cornering and low speed engine braking? I have a gen1 z1000 now and my only complaint is super abrupt engine braking and jerky throttle at sub 30mph, it's impossible to get a smooth entrance under 30 mph.

    • @gabrieljohannson6777
      @gabrieljohannson6777 7 лет назад +5

      everss02 hey mate. Low speed maneuverability is very good. The chassis design is much to thank for that. Well balanced bike mate. You will have no issues there. The turning circle however is not great. This can catch you out but you soon realize it isn't a 650 or say an MT-07 or MT-09 in terms of overall steering circle ability.
      The engine breaking is flawless. The slipper clutch is a work of engineering art. I've just clocked down the gears without flaw, concern or fear. It doesn't lock up or shake abruptly.
      The issue you refer to of jerky throttle at sub 30mph was a real concern I had but this isn't part of the 2016 TuonoRR make up. What I did notice when I first got the bike (it had Zero km/mph on the clock) was shaking at speeds below 15Km (10 miles). I've put 750km (466 miles) on the clock now and this issue has disappeared. The new model Tuono has had its fueling re-mapped and improved. The sales guy told me to expect the bike to settle in & he was correct. I can ride around at low speed with out any shaking at the front end or the sensation of the bike about to stall. The real question this makes you ask is "does it like being kept at such low speeds?" The answer is No. It gets hot quicker (max heat has been 106 degrees Celsius = 222 Fahrenheit). The other thing you notice is that the bike will want to accelerate above 10 miles per hour. In all truth this should not surprise anybody.
      Around town you will have no issues with the 2016 TuonoRR 1100 model and when you take it out of town you will have the biggest grin from ear to ear. Go check one out mate.

      Gabriel Johannson I was thinking about the 2017 model but this I could get it a lot cheaper than the newer one , that alone only missing the down shifter cruise control and new TFT display Damn
      Seems a lot after I typed that over $2500 more for the new one.

    • @gabrieljohannson6777
      @gabrieljohannson6777 7 лет назад +3

      The 2017 has some great updates or rather feature upgrades. The TFT and down-shifter are easy pickings and no real surprises. The bigger breaks are definitely value adds but all things considered, the 2016 model is an excellent machine and you are dead right, you can pick one up much cheaper than a 2017 model. You will still have loads of power at your wrist and a brilliant motorcycle. Enjoy. Respectfully G. PS: just looked at the original comment & it was 7 months ago. Rest assured that the bike gets better beyond the 5,000KM mark. It's coming into its own as all elements get settled down.

    I also much prefer an analog tach. Don't care if other people prefer these new colour digital tachs - have one on one of my race bikes and it's distracting and ... too much crap to look at, when I'm on track all I want is a tach and a gear position indicator.

    I wish Aprilia was more popular in the Southeastern US, but there are few dealers. We are a hot bed of motorcycle popularity. Ducati, BMW, Victory, Harley, and all the Japanese bikes have dealerships close to their buyers. Maybe if Aprilia would build a smaller cc entry level bike, they could build a base.

      Csirkefoga Yup. I became very comfortable with the power delivery of my V2 which peaks earlier....however the V4 keeps going and going. Still love my V2 as it is more lively throttle response.

      Ducati Drew is not kidding, that Tuono it's fucking mental, oh but the sound is so orgasmic. I test rode one last year back to back with a Speed Triple and the triple felt tame next to the Aprilia.

    Thanks for the video! I seriously would consider this as my next bike (and would likely be looking now except that I just had to replace my car thanks to a red-light runner). That exhaust note is indeed intoxicating! Most outrageous bike I've ridden is a Ducati Diavel (that was so much fun it should have been illegal), and I haven't had the chance to look at the Aprilia up close, but it looks just as outrageous if not more so -- and it's cheaper! So tempting.... Keep up the good work with the mag, and stay safe!

    Waaaaaa!!! I miss my Tuono! I traded it on something a little more practical for someone my (large) size, but I hope to get another one in a few years.
    "It's a little bit, um... Italian I guess, is the word I would use." YES! Italian means: styling first, performance (a close) second and then everything else. The only thing that really matters is that it goes fast and looks good doing it.

  • @Buzz65
    @Buzz65 7 лет назад

    It's funny, I was doing EXACTLY what you mentioned. I have a Monster S4R and an Fz1... I love both of those bikes but I've been drooling over the Tuono... and it 2017 the quick shift has auto-blip for the DOWN shift as well! My Fz is a "Does it all" bike and the Ducati is the soul stirring Italian that gets me into Ducati Island when I go to Austin MotoGP... So I'm perplexed...but I see myself owning one of these gems eventually.

    I'm feeling a lot more excitement on this bike than the Monster 1200. I guess I should listen to that excitement. IMO this bike doesn't look as good, but there were a lot of superlatives in the video. "Dream/Halo Bike", "Stick a needle into an exploding star to harness it's energy", "Radness Aprilia, Radness" and so on. I feel like you're telling me what bike to buy here.

    Is there risers to bring the bars up a bit and a kit to lower the pegs a little for these new Tuonos? Love this bike just need to make it a bit more roomy for me being 6'5".

    • @tinfoilhat6343
      @tinfoilhat6343 7 лет назад

      klxklr I am 6'4 and the bike is comfortable for me. I can ride it all day. on longer highway sections I occasionally use my r&g frame sliders as a leg rest so I can stretch my legs out. this really helps with circulation/ comfort and prevents me getting uncomfortable before having to stop for gas.

    Is the Tuono a naked or a half fairing bike?

  • @Sooopa_Doopa
    @Sooopa_Doopa 7 лет назад +1

    Am I crazy or the Tuono and the Factory have different tail sections? The "regular" Tuono that you are riding has a passenger seat but the Factory looks like the tail section was taken from the RSV4. True?

    • @joeridestrijcker445
      @joeridestrijcker445 7 лет назад +1

      The Tuono Factory comes with the RSV-like winged tail... but that's actually just a cover; you can remove it and have the passenger seat, like you see on the RR. I'll never take passengers, so I removed the passenger pegs (brackets to cover the holes are included!) and left the tail as it is (RSV look). If you're looking to buy a high-power naked bike, make sure to check out the Tuono... the sound alone is enough to make you grab your pen to sign the paperwork! (I have a shortened Akra Evo, full titanium with the slash-cut RSV carbon can; not as loud as some Ducs, but it does sound superb)

      Joeri De Strijcker. That's good to hear. I like to use a pillion bag and every now and then my g/f as well (lol). I was almost set finding a lightly used Ducati Streetfighter S but i have always loved Tuonos. Now that there is a Aprilia dealer less than 1/2 hour away the Tuono has become a contender

      Bikes and girlfriends are great: girlfriend on her own bike though, not on yours... ; TBH, streetfighter or naked style bikes (and racers) don't really offer much comfort for passengers at all... MAYBE if your gf is tiny; if she has a derrière like Kim Kardashian or weighs +100kg, that may not be feasible at all

    Ive had my 2016 Tuono 1100RR for 2 days now, I love the bike and also hate the bike, Im finding the bike really jerky and struggling at low speeds? sometimes when Im pulling away in first it sounds like Im trying to take off in 3rd, did you ever have this issue? does anyone know what the best setting etc is good for city riding?

    • @mariobondanza5149
      @mariobondanza5149 7 лет назад

      MrFunkatronik restore all aprc factory settings and check that the correct tyre circumference/transmission ratio has been correctly learned by the ecu (it's the same procedure recommended when you change the tyres).
      I have the feeling that it could be something about the traction control.

    4:58 yes i agree, those bikes are insane. Test rode one and it felt like there was a bubble around me whizzing down the highway. I had it leaned over so far on the highway flying during that test ride and I was the last person in the group by a mile. Bottom of third and it hit 105 and I said yeah I cant handle these machines, but wow what a feeling. Still want to have one of these because the seating position is pretty comfy sitting upright. I ride a Yamaha Stryker so cruiser life

      8:20 one thing i could not get a hold of was the turn signal with my thumb, like it was so far from the inner part of the grip I was like what?!?! The ride marshall was screaming at me to turn my signal off because I gave up on trying to turn it off. Should have just threw using it out the window since there was a ride marshall in town, the only bad experience of the test ride was the ride marshall screaming at me about the turn signal. Must not have wanted me to buy one of them i guess

    Zach, I sold my Street Triple R and my 848 to go down to 1 bike...I am choosing between the Tuono RR and the Ducati Supersport S, ending up same price out the door. For an everything bike, commute, backroads, light touring, 4-5 trackdays a year I would like your opinion. I assume everyone would say Tuono based on performance, but want to make sure you agree given it's a do it all bike I'm looking for. Love the mag and the videos! Keep it up!

    • @MPI1000
      @MPI1000 8 лет назад

      There's a lot of engine braking for sure. Even though it has a slipper clutch and some of the rider modes tries to mitigate the initial engine braking, you seldom have to touch the brakes in traffic, lol.

    OK--So real world crappy roads (Michigan) riding--Tuono vs KTM 1290: Which one? Would want occasional pillion rider options--but have KTM Adv 1190 for that. A little concerned as I have read occasionally of Tuonos (The 1000--havent been there in awhile) blowing their motors on the forum--and warm start issues/timing chain rattle-- but KTM HAD the rear hub issues (Since corrected I think). Thanks!

    Ok pending a test ride. Im convinced. Why didn't Ari get the "factory" ? I cant help but insist i get one of those. Are the breaks up to the task at the track or would it benefit from a better Master? Going to sell my zx to get one of these, thinking i may benefit from taking the RCS19 off it and putting on the tuono.
