  • I have officially owned my 2017 Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 Factory for over a year, and I thought it may be helpful to share the experience I've had while putting over 4,900 miles on this beautiful motorcycle. In this video, I share a brief history of the Tuono V4 and its pedigree, talk about what it's like to actually sit on and ride, how it performs on the street, how it performs at the racetrack, how it's been from a reliability standpoint, and share a recommendation for prospective owners.
    Thanks for watching, and be sure to like, subscribe, and comment if you enjoyed or found this video helpful! :)

    As an Aprilia technician, Aprilia V4s are stupid reliable mechanically speaking. I've seen a few quickshifters go out and have problems but otherwise hardly any issues. We do occasionally have software issues too, but it's nothing a customer will ever see.

    • @hiimchad
      @hiimchad  2 года назад

      Glad to gear that! That’s what I have heard and seen, particularly about the 1100s. I did have a weird software issue with the dash and adding a tenth of a mile for every few feet I traveled up to .6 miles any time I would turn the bike on, but an update fixed that.

I spoke with my tech today, and he said he may have found a solution through Aprilia, so we'll see when I get it back after it's first service.🤷‍♂️

    Im torn between a Tuono and a Super Duke. Im 6'6" with a 32 inch inseam. So i think the duke may be more roomy, but i heard the tuono feels more planted. And that V4 sound is just amazing.

    • @hiimchad
      @hiimchad  6 месяцев назад

      At 6'3", I love my Tuono, but it is a bit cramped. I also look a bit like I'm riding a pocket bike rather than a naked super bike. The bike handles phenomenally and has loads of soul, which I think are more than worth the compromise. I have ridden a 2020 Super Duke R on the street, but didn't really get to put it through its paces like I've done with the Tuono. It did feel good, and I'm confident could feel about as solid with properly set up suspension and ergos. Best thing to do would be test ride both, and see what you like best!

    Looks like OC... I regularly ride mine through Laguna to my favorite cigar lounge on PCH. Replaced the rear Sachs with a Nitron shock, made a big difference for me. Replaced the front suspension with GP Suspension, which was a transformational modification, and then upgraded the wheels to forged RSV4 wheels. Topped it off with a Gabro tune. All together, it went from a so so handling bike for my size and weight (6'2" and 220) to the perfect bike.

      @hiimchad  2 года назад

      Indeed it is! Nice mods! Sounds like you have it fully dialed. I thought my RR handled quite well considering it was designed to be more street-oriented. Had it at the track a couple times and it was still a hoot and handled nicely, even with the Sachs. The Ohlins on the Factory make it much sharper, as I'm sure your Nitron and GP bits do for your bike.

    Thanks for posting this video. Like you, I'm a little bit bigger than the average rider at 6'-4", 250. I've been riding a zx12r for the past 17 years and I'd really like to upgrade to a new bike. It seems like everything has gotten smaller these days and even the zx14 sits about an inch lower than my 05 zx12r. I like the zx14 but I really like the sound of the Aprilia with the SC exhaust.
    The pegs you mentioned in the video, how well do they work with a size 14 boot? By the way, what size boot do you wear and do you ever have trouble finding boots? In my size, there's nothing fashionable and all I can ever find are solid black ones. I'd love to have a nice flashy pair like some of the other riders I come across on the streets of MD, DC and VA.

      @@hiimchad the frustrating thing about wearing a size 47 or 48/ u.s. 13 or 14 is that you can't just pop down to the local dealership and try on a pair of all of the boots that catch your attention. We're stuck with having to order them and send them back when they don't fit.
      I've been hanging on to my Alpinestars for a little longer than I really should because I can't find anything to replace them.
      A few years ago, I ordered a cool looking pair boots from a large online retailer. The boots showed up on my doorstep. I brought the package in the house, opened the box and couldn't get my foot in the boot to even try it on. There was never a time when I had both boots on my feet and I was able to take a step in them. I called, got an authorization code to send them back. I had to pay for shipping to return them and they charged me a 20% restocking fee! Those boots were $500! So, I basically paid $130 to try on a pair of boots that didn't fit. I haven't ordered another pair of riding boots since then.
      Even when the international motorcycle show would come to DC, the vendors would never bring any boots in size 14 to try on. Year after year, all they would ever have is that one pair of Ponch and John from Chips, horseback riding boots.... smh.

      Don't you guys ever miss doing the downshift blips yourself though? I ve never used an autoblipper, but it feels good to do it yourself, and it takes some time to get good at it, especially while using the front brake. I m definitely sure it makes it easier to be faster on track, but doesn't it kind of take some of the fun away?

    • @hiimchad
      @hiimchad  2 года назад +1

      @@kw1213 To be honest, I really don't miss it, and I feel like the blipper adds more than it takes away from the riding experience. A fully automatic transmission would hamper the satisfaction for sure, but the QS and blipper don't for me.
      For the longest time, I never wanted anything to do with electronics of any kind on a bike. I was riding for 6 years before I even considered riding a bike with a quickshifter. I spent years practicing clutches upshifts (and downshifts, including under braking) and took a lot of pride in that skill. It made me feel like I would be worse of a rider for not doing it myself. I also thought making riding easier with some kind of shift assistance would take away from the riding experience and cost some gratification, but neither ended up being the case for me.
      My 2012 Daytona 675R warmed me up to electronics with its quickshifter, and I was absolutely sold on it from the first upshift I hit at high revs, WOT. It was so smooth and sounded so cool that every preconception I had about the QS instantly vanished.
      The first blipper I used was actually on a 2020 Super Duke R at a KTM demo day just before the pandemic began. I went with a friend who was a big KTM Touring/Enduro fan, and me not being too into that, chose the sportiest thing they had to ride. I found myself constantly speeding up and slowing down just to shift up and down with QS and blipper. It sounded awesome with such little effort. Total game changer for me. Having overcome the quickshifter anxiety about a year before that, this wasn't as hard to wrap my head around.
      When it came time to buy a Tuono, I didn't consider anything older than 2017 knowing I wanted the blipper, as well as all the other improved electronics and new features that 2016 and older were missing. I can't imagine not having it now. I turned it off once just to see what it was like, then I turned it back on within a couple minutes and haven't thought about it since.
      If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend trying a bike that has one. I think you may find it more pleasant and satisfying than you expect. 🙂
      Have you ridden a bike with a standard QS before?

      I have an 07 V2 Tuono with no rider aid technology and I have a 17 V4 Tuono Factory.
      I alternate weekly between the 2 bikes and enjoy using the clutch on the V2 for up and down changes and sometimes race shift with no clutch at high revs. But I find the QS and AB on the V4 much more enjoyable and satisfying to use.

    • @hiimchad
      @hiimchad  2 года назад

      @@wradford1 That’s a nice pair of bikes you’ve got there! I try to keep my shifting skills sharp on my WR250X, but there was a period of time where I didn’t have a bike without at least a QS. It had actually been a while since I had used the clutch to shift at all. I’m very comfortable clutchless downshifting, as I figured it out in order to work around not having a slipper clutch. Still do it on my Daytona at the track even though I now have a Yoyodyne. The WR can be shifted clutchless, but it seems to be happier with the clutch unless you’re really on it. My 2006 Daytona was happy shifting up and down without the clutch under any circumstance, but would occasionally get stuck in neutral between 1st and 2nd.

    How long did it take you to get used to the more upright ergos? + Do you ever miss riding full-on sportbikes?
    Coming from an R6, and on the fence between a Tuono or RSV4. Kinda worried about the wind and change in riding position..

    • @hiimchad
      @hiimchad  Год назад +1

      The upright egos felt great to me right away. The Tuono still pitches you forward a bit, unlike something like an MT10 where you sit pretty straight up. The bike is also a lot easier to maneuver since you have more leverage with the handlebar than with clip ons.
      I don't miss riding full on sport bikes on the street. To me, the Tuono is much more usable and more comfortable than a fully-faired sportbike or superbike. The engine and transmission are designed to be more friendly in the midrange, which is where I spend the vast majority of my time riding on the street.
      Wind is only an issue at higher speeds, but you can partially support yourself by leaning into the wind. Of course, if you're going really fast or at the track, it's going to be worse compared to a bike with a true windscreen, but for normal street riding, unless you're riding on the highway at 80+ all the time, I don't think it's that bad.

    • @hiimchad
      @hiimchad  2 года назад +1

      Nope! It was a simple install. Loosen the tie rod for the shifter and remove it from the QS sensor, pull off the left side rear set, break the bolt that holds the stock lever on, attach the new lever, adjust the shifter arm on the shift spindle for the angle you want the shifter (try to keep it at 90 degrees in relation to how the tie rod will run), and bolt it all back together. The brake switch isn’t connected to that part of the bike, so I’m surprised they would mention it in the directions. Maybe it’s for full Woodcraft rearsets? 🤔

Havnt had it in bad traffic here yet but def concerned about that. Ive eliminated th charcoal canister and changed coolant and thermostat so far just in case. Will be getting the gabro up map and eliminating the servo motor as well to give the other fan some space. Just wondering what yours experience has been with this high heat situation. Hey Jesse! Nope, no overheating issues for me fortunately. If you’re running without a tune, that could be part of the issue. If the fueling is off the bike can run hotter. I removed the exhaust servo as well wince I have the Race ECU. Mine has only crossed 220F a handful of times, but I also don’t ride in heavy traffic often and don’t let it sit and idle for long. I suppose it’s possible air could be making it’s way in through a leak in the cooling system, but that seems unlikely given the mileage. Sorry I can’t be of more help 😕

    Hi chad, coming up on 600 miles on my tuono. I had an issue the other day. I'd been riding it for about 2 hours and came home. My wife wanted to try it. She is a beginner and has a ninja 250. She got on it and took off. She let the clutch out too fast, and I heard it lugging the engine. She shifted up into second and third way to soon and again lugged the motor. I had her pull over, and she couldn't find neutral. I finally got back on and headed home. Something was wrong... The shift lights were coming on when accelerating, and it had no power. It wouldn't rev over 3k. I thought she might have hit the pit limiter button or something. I turned it off for a minute and started it up and the same problem. I babied it home and checked the battery and connections. It sat for 30 minutes, and when I turned it back on, it was fine. I noticed the traction control was set to 8. Any ideas as to what happened to it? I think it went into limp mode. Maybe from being lugged. I rode it again a few days later for 2 hours and no problem. I'm just a bit nervous as the bike has 12k miles. It has had the valves and 12k service done, though. It has a new battery, too.

    • @hiimchad
      @hiimchad  2 года назад

      Hi! I don’t think lugging the engine like that would put it into limp mode. However, it is possible you were having traction control cutting in while you were accelerating. ATC 8 is very invasive. But you still should have been able to get over 3k eventually. Wish I could offer more advice but I’m not really sure what it could be. Maybe try recalibrating the aPRC system? Sorry to hear you’re having issues 😔

      I’d recommend checking out the SC Oval or Graves as an alternative. I had a 2017 Tuono V4 RR before this Tuono. It had a Graves pipe and it sounded amazing. Still pretty loud when the throttle is pretty open, but nowhere near as obnoxious at idle and low RPM. I almost swapped the CR-T for it before I sold the RR, but the look of the CR-T looks great on the Factory in my opinion.

      Hey , one more question . Is it true that the exhaust flapper valve is only for noise compliance ? Can you disconnect it , without any negative side effects ?

    • @hiimchad
      @hiimchad  2 года назад

      @@calfire2598 It is primarily to keep the bike quieter at low load/rpm, but the bike's fueling is originally mapped to have that restriction in the situations where it is partially closed, so there will be spots in the low-mid rev range where the bike will run a bit rich or lean depending on the conditions and throttle position. Being that the valve is behind the biggest restriction (the cat) it probably won't be unrideable or grenade after a few rides, but it would be best to get a tune. I'm not sure the Race ECU or another off-the-shelf map would be a good fit, as those are all designed for exhausts that are more free-flowing than the stock pipe.
