I started listening to this song last March when my wife decided she didn't want to be with me anymore. I remember one morning specifically, I was out of state working, it was 3am and I was running the edge of the San Francisco bay just trying to clear my head, this song came up in a playlist on my phone. It brought me to my knees, i dropped and cried harder than i ever have before. Hayden I hope you have peace brother, thank you for this song.
That's why I love Music, or the arts in general... Creative types in general tend to be tragically empathetic people. Thank God 🙌 I mean hell, ain't that what it's all about? A Truly shared human experience... That's the ultimate, man. Leonard Cohen said it best: "Love is not a Victory March! It's a Cold, & it's a Broken HALLELUJAH" I mean, shit. He nailed it. Love is a wonderful, mysterious force, as real as it is unexplainable. But it wouldn't be so meaningful if we weren't so deeply broken. If this is all just one big accident, holy shit was it a doozy! And to get to say we were a part of it, singing & dancing & living in awe of our very own existence??? And the fact that you and I, two complete strangers who come from two completely different worlds, would somehow find our paths intersecting in this very moment & possess the awareness to appreciate just how lucky we are??? It's like a beautifully orchestrated masterpiece that was created just for us. How bout a little gratitude people??! No, we aren't immortal. Death & loss are part of life. But without them life would seem like such a terrible waste of time. Keep trucking along on this journey brother, & may you find whatever it is you're looking for. I don't know you, but I love you, & I mean that. Life's too short not to live the fuck out of it & love like it's been outlawed.
One guy sitting on a curb with a guitar evokes so many more emotions than an entire bombastic arrangement done by broadway or Hollywood. This has soul and meaning, you can’t just throw money around and find that. This is human.
"Blood stained sleeves, and the ashes on my knees...." I had to think on that lyric for barely half a sec. I automatically can think back to my long sleeves with the spots of blood soaked from the inside...but the ashes on the knees....I had to shut my eyes think back and relive a day of scoring, cooking, trying over and over to hit anywhere imaginable, flagging, pushing the plunger, and than the rush followed by a hard nod.... and it was at the end of that rapid flash of memories I recall at times me, but mostly a using buddy always, ALWAYS nodding out, sitting, propping his self up with a hand on each thigh, and one hand holding a smoke, left to smolder as the ashes slowly pile upon his knee until the cherry would finally sting skin and cause a jolt of pain able to bring folks as dead as we back to the living long enough to stamp out the smoke. Bitter sweet times.
Telling my story..out of jail last week and clean. Dripping.in pain we medicate ourselves, the best self help many of us can come up with. We do recover. Then we can reach down to our bros/sis and help.pull them up and out
No matter how many times I hear this song i will never get tired of it. I have lived that life and felt those feelings. I've been clean from Heroin for 7 years now after years of letting it control me abd take everything away from me. At one point I was living in Nashville, jobless and homeless, and had to sleep at a car wash and play on Broadway in 9 degree weather, dopesick, until my fingers cracked and bled and my voice would start cracking just to support a $200 a day habit. I know this guy has had the same struggles I had and my prayers go out to him and all the people out there struggling with addiction.
The tortured howls of a motel ghost And the worship songs of a well-worn throat All cradle me as I waste alone On a fools gold throne With my troubles all in tow It's 86 dollars up front for the key Tack on another hundred for the company It's on my dime but she holds me tight Yeah we fuck all night For a moment i'm alright Oh home is where i ought to be Out in the gentle country breeze with my family But cold, in a casket I lie Bare knuckle boxing polished wood And I've grown so tired I've grown so tired All the rounders hide their saw-tooth grin With every page I burn for them As I sign myself away to grieve Through blood stained sleeves In the ashes of my needs As I stand within a makeshift ring Of follies lies and broken things And I shout and howl and I cry and i sing Counting blessings down And crossing the x's of my doubts Oh glory, won't lay your hands on me Oh how it used to break me down but I'm finding peace Lord knows I can't look back now So I try and swallow pride, but it's awful going down It's awful going down

Hayden, I doubt that you'll ever see this, but I want you to know that this has to be one of the most beautiful songs I've heard. The lyrics speak to me and my own battles with addiction and loss. I turned 39 today and I honestly don't know if I'll ever find peace or if I am meant to struggle, but like you I am so tired. Thank you for this song, it's rare I see something so real and so in touch with my own life.
smalltownfire I don't know whether to hug you or give you a gut shot?!? No, but seriously, dude at the moment I'm blowing snot bubbles. Idk what you call it, but I went down the list of his songs and just so happened to pick, "Learning to Live Alone." It wouldn't have been impossible to find something that describes my current situation. I'm going through a divorce and went from my son sleeping in the same bed with me for 4 years to seeing him once a week. As, if that isn't enough to break a man, the one who I have confided in through out my life and my best friend, my Mother died of Ovarian Cancer and gone as well. In the last 8 months I have cried the loudest and most pain-filled cries of my life. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I WILL ALWAYS BE IN HOUR DEBT!! "I'm Alone in a Way I've Never Been." ~Sturgill Simpson
Damon Baesler sorry got your lost, my mother n law passed from the same Cancer 4 years ago, now I’m divorced as well with two kids I see half the time, I love Travis meadows originals of Better boat and riser. Music heals the soul no doubt. Sturgill is growing on me the more I hear him
smalltownfire absolutely nothing helps me work through my problems as much as music. Sturgill Simpson's All Around You, singlehandedly helped me process my Mother's sickness and her death. I hope you know that I was just messing around about the gut shot. I have found that other than music, being able to laugh in the mist tragedy, keeps me sane. Thanks again.
smalltownfire seriously man I can not thank you enough for turning me on to him. I am listening to him and he is freaking amazing and exactly what I am in to. Serindipity is a great thing.
I'm four months sober, and these gemsonvhs have literally hit home so hard, I listen to Benjamin Todd everyday on my playlist...makes me think of where I was and where I'm heading...wanna say thanks for all this great music!
I found Benjamin when I was in rehab, Using Again made me rethink my entire perspective. Cocaine and Able by Amigo was also a HUGE inspiration to me too. Now I’m sitting with 27 months clean and trying to find joy wherever I can. Getting clean doesn’t fix everything, but it sure does help.. good luck brother
I hit like before he even started singing. He played that first chord and there was a vibe, I knew it was going to be great. Glad this video popped up.
This is fantastic. I lived in Nashville for 8 years, and moved back at the beginning of this year. I miss it every day. This guy right here is what makes the city so magical. Not the bright lights or the honky-tonks. Guys like this that will probably (unfortunately) never make it big. They come to Nashville and chase whatever it is they're looking for, of whatever they're running away from. You can walk down Demonbreun, Division, or Broadway and stumble upon someone who possesses everything Music Row is looking for. The problem is, Music Row doesn't even know what that is. And so guys like this sit on the street and share their remarkable talent with anyone lucky enough to be walking past at that particular time. I hope this guy makes it.
Hayden, if you ever read this comment I just want you to know what an inspiration you've been to me, in all the music you write. I've struggled too and I know the pain. I can hear it in your voice in this song. Stay strong man and keep writing music. We love you
I’ve been listening to this song for a few months straight, and I’m beginning to think this is the perfect song. I wake up with it on my mind. Every single thing about it touches something deep.
this is one of the greatest songs and albums I've ever heard. I just found him a few days ago and Nicotine & China White is almost all ive been listening to. Almost at 2 months off dope and all opioids including Suboxone which was my crutch for 2 years. Feeling alive again and his album helps me remember where I just came from because its so easy to forget the pain if you don't hold it close.
I listened to the first time almost a month ago.. I was visiting friends, one of them wasnt doing to good so she went to sleep early. My other friend I was visiting n I were drinking beers and taking turns playing songs. This was the last song of the night before he went to bed. It was such a cosy feeling. I passed out on the couch watching the lightning. 2 weeks later my friend who wasnt doing so well took her life. When I listen to this song Im transported back to that night. Id do anything to go back and do things differently.
I'm from Austria and I just want to say that this song and the music this guy makes is amazing and really touching. I mean most people think that we Europeans don't appreciate this kind of music but I would just love to see this guy play live! Keep on this good work man!
I have never felt a connection to any artist's songs more than I do when I listen to Hayden. Between the emotion he has when he sings and the emotions I have when I hear it, and before I ever heard it, I feel like his music is tailored for me. Hayden, your music does more than you know, friend. Much love from a stranger
I quite enjoy this tune, its perfect. One day he will look back over his shoulder and see just how many people's lives he's touched and I hope... I hope it brings him as much joy as it's brought all of us. Keep going... never stop
man, i just played this song myself a few times to learn it, and its so satisfying. Same with Stolen Daughter, this guy's music is just so fucking good.
I can't tell you how happy I am I discovered GemsOnVHS. The amount of talent I've discovered and have fallen in love with is unreal. Even been able to see some of these people live. Such a blessing. Keep it up, please
I've listened to your songs so much over the last 3 years. I want to say, thank you. The first time I heard this song and new kind of lonely i listened to them over and over for days singing my heart out with you. Then it lead me to your other work. The reality you share I feel in my soul. Thank you for making music so authentic and real. I admire you so much and I am so thankful for you. Dont stop. You are truely amazing. You know you aren’t the best singer and all that mean less the passing is not what I think is worth nothing the lyrics you sing and with the heart I feel in my heart they concur your hymns and spiritual songs are something I have never heard before and I love real music like Hebrew worship the way it was heard when it was written I hold this is of most precious we as humans can experience if you read psalms over and over again and every time He shows up to your appointment that you didn’t even know you had with exactly what you need He knew exactly what you were going through your worship that you give The God of Abraham is like David’s worship
My god, this guy is amazing! What a beautiful voice and equally beautiful song.. thanks again gems 💎 now then, the task of downloading every possible song and a lot of time management so I’m able to listen to them all 🙄
I've heard this song a million times and it still gives me chills. I've been there and it speaks to my very soul. Been clean now for 9 years now and I hope I never forget where I came from.
Congratulations. I was opiate dependent for 20+ years, been clean for 18 months. I don't miss that life one bit, I feel blessed it's been this easy for me.

that's pretty much it mate. I'd say my criteria is honesty. is the music honest? is it real? is it authentic? do they live for it? then I want to showcase it!
Thats great to hear. It was your upload of Lost dog street band that got me into the channel. My first thoughts were his voice is so honest and thats what appealed to me... The more I watched the more I realised they as you said 'lived for it'. Thanks for the music.

I only just discovered you today. The day after your newest song.....keep it up ur music is so important. Because its REAL and not one note different. I love your art
This song is perfect. His use of cursing is brilliant, the simple and mournful rhythm is great, and the lyrics are genius. I love being able to hear the reverberation of the guitar's body. Perfect job!
I fucking hated this type of music forever. Just couldn't stand it. Then I found this channel. Now it's all I can think about. All day. All night. I spin this shit over and over listening to it and can't get enough. It makes no sense at all, but thanks. Thanks so much for this. One of the best places to be on the net today.
Holy shit... This song is pain beautiful. Shades of Elliot Smith. Darkness shining through a rinse of hope. Thank you Hayden. THANK YOU GEMS ON VHS FOR BRINGING THESE ARTISTS TO LIGHT.
Where ever your at Know that you are loved and this song has become my favorite pastime. I hope and pray that you have found your glory and your grace and that as of now your at peace. May your spirit be free and your heart absorb it's wounds and be whole again. (:

Wicked cool song. The Kennemetal hat also caught my attention. My father in law worked there for 43 years and never missed a day of work. They don't make them like that anymore.
I discovered the music of sierra ferrel on this channel she is now on her way to big things. But hey gems this song and singer are another gem this song should be on every radio station in the world it is simply beautiful it gives a spiritual lift the guy as no gimmicks he is totally genuine
I don't think I've commented on this one yet, but just wanted to say how much I love this song. I reckon I've been listening to it at least weekly (if not near daily) since you released it. Hayden is a damn talented artist, can't wait to see where he goes.
I am proud of those generations that have come after me that still get it, the kids are alright :) There is a metric shit ton of beautiful unearthed American music from young artists of all races. I listened to the entire catalogue before commenting, simply wonderful. Also one of the album covers reminded me of a pic of Woody Guthrie.
I started listening to this song last March when my wife decided she didn't want to be with me anymore. This is the common theme I see as I’m sure we all do. I think this is a better form of group therapy that you won’t find anywhere else.
I hope you found happiness, brother ✌
Sorry for your pain, I know you came out stronger on the other side. We always do. Keep moving forward. Much love.

One of the best songs I've ever heard.
Check out Rats Get Fat by him if you haven't already.

Emotion like this is the aftermath of years of true suffering. Suffering plainfolk can relate to. There's no emotion in broadway, it's all acting..

The tortured howls of a motel ghost And the worship songs of a well-worn throat
All cradle me as I waste alone On a fools gold throne With my troubles all in tow
It's 86 dollars up front for the key Tack on another hundred for the company It's on my dime but she holds me tight Yeah we fuck all night For a moment i'm alright
Oh home is where i ought to be Out in the gentle country breeze with my family
But cold, in a casket I lie Bare knuckle boxing polished wood And I've grown so tired I've grown so tired
All the rounders hide their saw-tooth grin With every page I burn for them As I sign myself away to grieve Through blood stained sleeves In the ashes of my needs As I stand within a makeshift ring Of follies lies and broken things And I shout and howl and I cry and i sing Counting blessings down And crossing the x's of my doubts
Oh glory, won't lay your hands on me Oh how it used to break me down but I'm finding peace Lord knows I can't look back now So I try and swallow pride, but it's awful going down It's awful going down

This is the real deal. He lets you right in with his demons. This and Ben Tod have completely changed my musical tastes. Keep it up GemsonVHS.
Nice.
I see you too are a fan of the opera.
The smartest man I ever knew put it: " Music is feelings". Damn this guy is a poet and story teller like no other.
Hayden keep doing your thing.. I've played this so many times.,... Heard you were celebrating 30 days... Keep up the good work
GemsOnVHS thank you for bringing another beautiful artist to my playlist! You are one of my favorite channels on RUclips.
Oscar. T. Grouch thanks Oscar! hope to bring much more soon
This is stunningly deep song writing, and singing. You are mind blowing, Hayden.
very much so.
I quite enjoy this tune, its perfect. One day he will look back over his shoulder and see just how many people's lives he's touched and I hope... I hope it brings him as much joy as it's brought all of us.
Keep going... never stop
reminds me. the good moments may be short, but they burn brighter than all the misery
man, i just played this song myself a few times to learn it, and its so satisfying.
I've been listening to this song for four years now, still love it. Brings back memories of wandering through the country lost.
This is a masterpiece, I've been coming back to this video for 3 years now and it never gets old.
Life can be cruel to us, I'm just so proud of you. Thank you for your impact in my own life and making my life better through your amazing thoughtful, and real music.

Thanks for the great content. Do you record these videos as live sessions? Do you include international patreon supporters in the physical mailouts of things like CDs, vinyl, tapes etc?
You know you aren’t the best singer and all that mean less the passing is not what I think is worth nothing the lyrics you sing and with the heart I feel in my heart they concur your hymns and spiritual songs are something I have never heard before and I love real music like Hebrew worship the way it was heard when it was written I hold this is of most precious we as humans can experience if you read psalms over and over again and every time He shows up to your appointment that you didn’t even know you had with exactly what you need He knew exactly what you were going through your worship that you give The God of Abraham is like David’s worship
@@kainhunt9879 Yes, Cain, exactly my thoughts too!
Soulful ladies and gents... Soulful. Ray Lamontagne reaching into your very soul plucking the strings of your inner being.

Hayden sitting on the curb sounds like much more than an orchestra. Absolutely astonishing stuff.

1million + views!!!!!! awesome. Best song writer out there today!!!!! keep up the great work. Once travel opens up I'm making the trip down across the border to Denver to catch a show.
Wicked cool song. The Kennemetal hat also caught my attention. My father in law worked there for 43 years and never missed a day of work. They don't make them like that anymore.
Hope he’s doing well. Been listening since this was put on here. Beautiful sadness brings me back here…
I discovered the music of sierra ferrel on this channel she is now on her way to big things.
He's in rehab right now so hopefully he'll be getting better soon!
I love your channel. Thanks for sharing all kinds of great music
What an amazing talent. There is hope.
That fact he changed his statement in mid sentence from "wasted" to "spent" made me fall in love with HCD..🥰💔😣
Incredible. Love the live footage and love that Hayden is an incredible performer. How amazing!
Thank you. This is a good one. Soul...
