I’m making a sort of emblem/badge for a car but I need it to be clear and I don’t have any experience with resins or casting for that matter. I was wondering if Smooth Cast 325 would be suitable for my application or is there something else you recommend?

    Great video as always Bill! It may be beneficial to your viewers to touch on safety precautions while using urethanes, especially in enclosed spaces. Also, I know of several people who found out the hard way that they were allergic to resin because they weren't wearing gloves while casting. Always good to encourage proper handling of chemicals, have fun without hurting yourself!

    Awesome video for a noob like me! At 7:00, you said a good mold should last about a dozen times. What if I need a mold to last hundreds of times? What materials for the mold can be used instead?
    Context, I'm pouring a clear, flexible 2-part PU onto custom shaped flexible LED strips and need to create walls around the edges of the LED strips to keep the PU from running down the sides.

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  4 года назад +4

      If you're lucky you can get a lot of pulls like that, but it all just depends. If you're pouring something flexible then you'e more likely to need a rigid mold, in which case concrete or something similar might be more what you're looking for, and also typically lasts longer.

Got same results with another manufacturer. Any suggestions on what I may be doing wrong to mess up the cure? Would they need to be heated during cure? Should it be mixed and poured at a certain room and product temperature? Any advice much appreciated.

  • @Linktw0
    @Linktw0 Год назад

    Great tutorial 👍 but one thing remains unclear even after a few replays, so I'm hoping someone can advise..?
    So, after filling the mold you talk about putting it in the pressure pot and apply 60psi ambient pressure to the outside so that any remaining bubbles in the resin would compress to micro size.
    However, later on (5:10) you come back to the pot to retrieve the mold and you comment that it's now time to release the vacuum from the pot.
    So what was it during those cure hours? pressure or vacuum?

However, it ended up binding or melting the smooth on 300 to the plastic trash mold. • @punishedprops

      Resin curing creates an exothermic reaction, so it gets VERY hot. Your mold is probably not the right material to use with resin and because of that it melted.

      I do use a respirator! At the time I didn't have a pressure pot, so bubbles would sometimes happen. Now I use a pressure pot even if I don't have to because I can! But most molds are okay without a pressure pot - it depends entirely on how the mold is set up.

      You CAN, but you want to make sure it's the same kind of resin and make sure you do it soon after casting the pieces. You'd also need to rough up the surfaces you're gluing together, and you'd probably have a good bit of sanding and clean up.

    Will adding more dye darken or brighten the color of the white resins.

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  5 лет назад

      More dye will make the color darker, but remember that the resin cures bright white, so the final color will always be diluted with white. That's why you can get "color match" resins that are mostly clear and don't dilute your dye colors. SmoothCast 325 is a good example.

    I made a face with WED clay and I planing to put on the wood and hanging to the wall. Somebody told me that sculpture will be fall and broke. Is that true? Is so, what can I do? Is there any product to seal the clay and be protected for cracks?

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  6 лет назад +1

      I don't have much experience with WED clay, but I've mostly seen it used to sculpt a master that is then molded in silicone so that rigid, resin copies can be made of it.

    Do you guys ever have any problems with air bubbles in your resin casts? I'm having trouble finding a full proof method to avoid those tiny surface bubbles.

      Bubbles are a fact of life unless you use a pressure pot.

    Is there a clear urethane resin for capturing things visible within? Cheers

      Absolutely! I'd check out Smooth-On's site and ask their customer service which material they'd recommend - they're super helpful

    I want to make a silicone mold of the life size skull. What you recommend to me, brush mold or the technique that you used, two parts mold? I thinks if I use your technique will be a lot of silicone material or resin.

      Punished Props Academy Thanks, I have to practice with brush on with Rebound 25. I'm thinking about business, which one is better to reproduce and economics too

    Hi,
    I have a question.
    how does smooth cast 65D feel? Do you feel that it’s plastic or do you fell the quality? Because I want to make high quality statues. And it shouldn’t fell cheap when you touch it.
    Thank you.

    • @punishedprops

      I haven't really messed with 65D much, so I'm not sure

    Why not mix the tint into part A of the urethane, instead of part B?

    Could you please do some tutorial on polyurethane rubber props? can polyurethane rubber liquid be slush cast as urethane resin?

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  4 года назад

      It depends on the rubber and the type of prop. I'd head over to the Smooth-On website and check out their tutorials! They have TONS of great info on different materials. I haven't done much work with urethane rubbers myself.
