    Hey Bill ,do you have a video on how to make a mold for a piece that will be hollow but you need a constant wall thickness?

  • @wesplybon9510
    @wesplybon9510 8 лет назад +7

    So are you recommending against making masters with deep crevices? I didn't quite understand that part. If you fill the crevice part way it won't make it into the mold as you were intending, so wouldn't it just be better to not have created deep crevices in the first place or am I missing something?

    • @ge2719
      @ge2719 8 лет назад +1

      if you need to put those details in the final product then it will/could be easier* to make the holes shallow by filling them in on the master and then any copy you make from that will need to be cut deeper but your mold will last longer. once it tears that's a lot more cleanup to do with every copy you make from it or even have to make the mold all over again

    • @pprotory
      @pprotory 5 лет назад

      To avoid this issue: When designing your master make sure deep crevices have an angled wall as opposed to straight walls. Reason being an angled wall means that the part will release completely from all sides evenly. with straight walls the sides will have friction as it slides across increasing the chances of a tear. In parts where this design method isn't possible you can always try for a higher durometer silicone (more rigid.) but still the chances are increased.
      Another thing you can do is create a pin or plug of some sort that can be removed after the part is out of the mold.

    Do you have to spray your master with a release spray before making the mold? Or does that depend on the material you make your master out of? Something I've been wondering about :P

      Yes, I've been wondering the same thing.. any reply?

    • @IskaCosplay
      @IskaCosplay 2 года назад

      @@txwing99 from my current experience it depends on your masters and the kind of silicone you use. I tend to not use it since it causes a sort of matte glaze on an otherwise shiny surface. That does mean my molds tend to have to retire earlier though :P

    Hey Bill. Great stuff! I've been subscribed for a while but haven't really gone through much yet. I'm 100% a NOOB at making pretty much anything but have some pretty big aspirations! I thought I would start smallish and make a weapon before trying a full cosplay. I started looking at things for making a Sontaran rifle from Doctor Who a YEAR ago and being completely new I'm just paralyzed about how to even start! Have you made any video recommending how to get started from the very ground up?
    Thanks!

    Regarding crevices, what's the best way to sand and smooth the bottom of the crevice? Even jeweller's files don't fit well into the hole, and sandpaper/sponges seem too unwieldy to really smoothen out the internal flat part. Is there some kind of trick to it?

    • @ge2719
      @ge2719 8 лет назад +2

      paint it black and hope its not noticeable. or dig it deeper than you need and refill with some of the same resin and let it set at the right level to give you a flat finish.

    • @exaltdragon
      @exaltdragon 8 лет назад +1

      +Graeme Evans Great idea with the resin, thanks!

    • @ge2719
      @ge2719 8 лет назад +1

      exaltdragon yeah, it takes a bit of practice though. most of the time it will be more of a smooth rounded finish. which can still look good. but can be hard to get the perfectly flat, square, like it's machined out of metal look.
      Someone really needs to make tiny flush trim router bits.

    I've really enjoyed the series on mold making and I've had a very specific question about molds. I would like to do some white metal (pewter) accent pieces for props. Are you familiar with any silicone mold supplies that can handle the temperature of the liquid metal (450F)?

      They did a video a couple weeks ago about that exact thing. They made a pewter amulet from Skyrim. All the details are in the video I'm sure. I'm super excited to try to make a few pewter castings myself!

    • @punishedprops

      Masters can be made from nearly any material. I like things like wood or sheet plastic like PVC foam or styrene. You could also sculpt it out of clay. The specific techniques depend on what you're specifically building. Here's an example: punishedprops.com/2012/05/08/mass-effect-m-6-carnifex/
