Would you make a mold similar to the ones used for you Highlander lightsaber build? Im making several different 12 inch long hilts and it needs to a slot in the center for the blade tang. The finished hilt needs to be strong enough to hold the blade for cutting so I have not decided which type of resin to use. Love the videos and all your props.
Hello, I just found this channel and is wonderful because it answers the questions the others don’t. I am new to mold making and need to create round mold trays for resin casting but I am not sure how to go about it. How would I create a mold that will give me a border and also how do you create molds with lip in them. Do you have a video I can watch or any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am sure a lot of viewers would love to see this process. Thank you

this with the vacume form is going to help me out. casue hand filing metal grips for the gun i did was about 6 hours of misery pain, and blisters..but i got the handel on, made a electric tape mold to make the center part of the grip. but i am not going to put time frames on when i will have the video up cause this took 2 days longer than i though.
Re getting rid of bubbles, if you've got an old HiFi speaker (many are taken to dumps/recycle centres so easy to get for nothing) could you not make a platform that vibrates the mold encouraging the bubbles to rise to the surface?
Amazing. I've never mold / casted anything right now that I saw few of your last videos I'm going to try for sure! The only problem is that we don't have any Smooth-On materials around here :S
Kind of a late reply, not sure if you guys are still watching comments. I seem to recall a video recently, where you mentioned you started using a new smooth-on silicone that prevented bubbles forming, but I can't remember which video :P. Which smooth-on was it?
Mold Max 29NV. Any of the silicones with "NV" stand for "no vacuum," I belive. They're less viscous and easier to mix, which also means the bubbles can escape easier. www.smooth-on.com/products/mold-max-29nv/
Hey Bill! I live in an apartment with a small deck but otherwise no outside area specifically for us. What kind of prop making can I do without a garage type space?
These videos are a real help, I wouldn't know what to do. Here's my question: Is it possible to cure resin inside of resin that has been rotocasted? Does it depend on the type of resin being used or will the heat damage the resin that has already been cured regardless?
To cast in silicone you typically want to use a rigid material for your mold. I'd ask the folks at Smooth-On for what they recommend based on your project.
If I want to make a silicone shoe upper, how do I create the cast and the filler for the center of the cast so that I result in just a even silicone layer that I would use for the shoe. I have an idea but if there is a know way, can you explain how? Thanks.
Thanks, useful but doesn't explain how to create a even layer (about 5mm) that is the main shoe design. I am basically trying to establish if I can create a seamless, all in one look, or if I have to use silicone sheets and cut the shoe pattern out and stick/adhere together (which isn't the goal). So essentially, how they make silicon masks, but to make it thicker and more accurate, if there is a way.
Hi! thanks for the awesome video! I was wondering though, I am making Eris Morn and am trying to figure out her eyes. I decided to use resin for her eyes and possibly her orb, but how would I do a negative cast for her eyes? I don't want a solid piece and haven't figured it out yet. Thanks!
What type of sculpting material would you recommend using when creating a piece to cast? I've heard that oil based pottery clay could work but maybe there could be a better material.
I'm going to cast transparent resin nerf parts for a project, but if the object has holes in it, can you get the object out without destroying the mold in the process? Maybe a technique for making the actual mold? Seems like it would be hard to extract the master out of the mold without tearing everything.
hey just asking about this, I saw his slush casting video and his other molding video for masks and the stuff he uses is kind of expensive for me, how much can you actually make with this? will one set of this stuff last me a couple of molds or will I have to keep buying?

You'll probably end up making a lot of brush on molds. I use Rebound 25 silicone for that. You can cast the parts in a variety of resins depending on the qualities you want from the finished pieces. For materials suppliers in the UK, this should help: www.smooth-on.com/distributor-regions/europe/
that cylindrical mold, is that rebound 25 backed with mold max 40? Asking because I've got a bunch of rebound 25 leftover and not quite enough MM40 for a two part mold, wasn't sure if the tin cure MM and platinum cure r25 was compatible.
Definitely no baby powder for making the mold - it will be embedded in the silicone. I do frequently use a release agent but in this case didn't really need it, as the buck was quite rigid and unlikely to stick.
@@punishedprops First cast successful after a few failed attempts, it a small bone like a tube and bigger at the end, added a vent path and used a syringe to slowly pour the resin and eliminate the huge bubble that appeared at the middle which caused it to only cast half of the way.

What's the best way to clean the buckets or are they just automatically trashed?.. i tried rinsing them out with water and dish soap and it became a total sticky mess. I do rinse and reuse them! I usually use soap and water and a good scrub - I find it helps a lot if you wipe out excess silicone IMMEDIATELY after pouring with a paper towel and then clean it out. The mixed one you can just let pour and peel it out :)
Thanks for the tips! I have been wanting to try my hand at making a mould . The thing I’m confused about is that I bought the mold star before and mixed it up but then I realized what can I use for a form of something. You can make a mold master out of pretty much anything! Most frequently people use non-sulfur based clay, finished 3D prints, or pieces made from sealed and sanded MDF.
+Fel Since it is only going to be in a liquid state for a finite time, you will more than likely destroy your plumbing after the silicone or resin fully cures / hardens. Your best bet is to wait until it's set, peel it out of the container and put it in the trash. Another trick is to calculate exactly how much material you need, and use only that amount. This decreases your cost and waste.
