Hey bill I used this stuff in the past called mold builder and it's basically a jar of silicone that can be used to to make a brush on mold. It recommends that you do 10 coats but it's not bad on the wallet at about 30$ for a little container of it. You can do probably 3 molds maybe more with just one container.

You're gonna love this. So I started my first silicone mold using this video as a guide two days ago. I bought all the items you recommended, double of everything. I'm on the part where you add the plasti paste and I didn't realized this but the company I bought from on amazon gave me one kit of plasti paste and another of Smooth- Sil 940 which happen to have identical boxes. I did not order Sil 940. So with great eagerness and vigor I removed the clay border and trimmed the rebound 25, and started mixing what i thought was plasti paste...Two layers later... I was confused because the paste didn't look anything like the video so looked at the box to see what I did wrong and to my horror "Platinum Silicone Rubber Compound" caught my eye. Im waiting for it to dry, wondering what to do next. Laugh out Loud. Love the video by the way.

I watched your entire series on casting and mold making and actually own your foamsmith books. My question is what would you make your helmet out of before you make a mold of it. I know in prior video you said you wouldn’t use Eva foam so was wondering what instead should I make a helmet out of if I want to make a mold of it.
This is a very interesting way to do brush on moulds... I wonder if this process would work on models such as a full characters with a base or designs where there is space between legs.

Hi Bill. Great tutorial... Look, I am about to receive a helmet ABS kit and I would like to recast it and play around with some different finishes, but using vacuum form method. Is there any technique of recasting and keep the original size of the mold after vacuum it? Thx a lot!
Thx a lot for the reply. But if I vacuum form over this new hydrocal bulk, the final size will be bigger than the original bulk, right? (due to the 2mm polystyrene used on the vacuum). That's what I would like to avoid. That's the real trick I cannot figure out !!! :-)
Hi Bill, Do you recommend using a vacuum chamber for Rebound 25? And second question related to your upcoming slush casting video: Have you tried making props using the FOAM-IT series, VS Urethane? Perfect! I want to try molding and casting a shield I made. Is this plus the upcoming slush casting video the technique you'd recommend for a shield (seems similar to a mask only a bit larger). Also, if I want to make a mold out of something made with foam, is there anything special I need to do with the foam master first?

I used the Rebound 25 Silicone in my first attempt. The product worked great but I was kinda sloppy in my application so I purchased another round to do a second attempt. However, I got the wrong product in the mail. I got OOMOO 30 Tin-Cure Silicone Rubber. The instructions look same but I am going to hold out for the correct Rebound 25. However, since I have this 30 tin-cure do you have any project ideas or suggestions for how to use this other product? Thanks so much!
Hi Bill, any major disadvantages to possibly using Free Form AIR from Smooth-On instead of Plasti-Paste II? I've successfully used Pasti-Paste II for my first mold, following your recommendation, but saw Smooth-On's demo video (the butt-ugly Batman mask that they use to show-off the pig iron additive), and they used Free Form AIR. Worth a shot or?
ok but how do you make a regular mold without a helmet to base it off, im trying to make a dark helmet helmet from spaceballs because i cant find one for sale so i decided to make one but everyone just makes a mold with the helmet under can someone pls link me a video on how to make one without a mold.
You cant make a mold without a model in it. If you want to make that helmet then do research on how people make them. Usually with different materials then you mold it and cast it in the material you actually want.
what kinda resin is better for bigger projects? im sure youve done a video on it. but i cant seem to find one. all the casting proos ive seen have come out flopppy. i need a hard solid piece. trying to cast a. 2ft 5 rifle thats 2 inches wide at the thickest point.

How large of a mold have you made? I'm interested in making a B-9 replica and I was thinking about using a method similar to this for the mold. I read that I should make a plug out of foam and wood, then gel coat it and fiberglass it. You used silicone which seamed to give a better result, or very similar. I wanted my mold to produce a life size replica, so... it would be really, really big. Any suggestions?

Oh, I cringed when you mentioned wasting silicone and spilling resin. I just made a made a mold and did both of those things, wasted a bunch of silicone in a box mold and also made it in such a way that slushing it wastes a lot of resin. But I learned a lot, and this was a great resource for how I'll do it next time.
I made a mold for swish casting. I tried two test pieces, but the plastic always pools to the center of the mask, masking the nose and brow protrusion thicker than the rest of the mask. I swish until the liquid was barely moving and it still happened. How do I keep that from happening?

+Bill Doran Used their platinum silicone. I tried a lot of different measurements with thickener going by weight. Made the mold successfully, but just didn't like the consistancey. Great store though, I actually near them.
unfortunately Smooth-On molds are far too expensive to get here, so I'm curious to know whether you think using plaster of Paris for making a mold would work? As its rather cheap and easy to get here. Thank you kindly for doing all these amazing videos! :D
I need some help with a large project I am doing for GenCon. Basically I need fake metal spikes of varying sizes, and I need them to be rubbery, so there is no chance in hurting people, but able to hold their form and look REAL.
If I wanted to make a mold out of a helmet but the visor of the helmet is already cut out, should I add try to fill in the visor piece with something so there’s not a hole? Or am I screwed? 😔

So, for a first timer trying to do a mold of a helmet (not as intricate as the new Master Chief, but more than a phase 1 clone trooper) would you still recommend the rebound 25 and thickener? Want to get a large amount, but dont want to end up with a material that isn't useful for what I'm doing...
That would probably work just fine - I always recommend chatting with Smooth-On customer service and telling them about your project! They're really great at suggesting which product will work best for what you want to do
I usually point folks to the customer service at Smooth-On! They're great for figuring out what should be used for a project. We also have some fans who made a group on Facebook called "The Prop Tarts of Punished Props." That's definitely worth checking out, as there are members of all experience levels there!

I know you must have had this question a lot. I'm looking to make resin copies of foam props I have already made. I have been working with resin for small clay models but not for larger weapons. My weapons are foam pieces with plastidip, paint then sealed with a spray. Can make moulds with these to cast a resin master, or do I have to remake them with something else first (like clay or wood)?
Personally, I would prefer to make the masters from something more rigid, but if you seal the foam really well with something like epoxy, and sand it really well, it should mold Ok.
Awesome guide Bill! :D However this does make me wonder, at 0:39 you said you could just fill a container with Silicone and it'll make a perfectly good mold. Now given all the extra hours of effort it takes to make these brush-on molds (Curing in between steps and such) plus extra stuff like wood, hardware (nut's, blots) and all the other stuff you smeared on there, i'm curious if it really is that much more cost effective long term? Then again... I don't know much about this stuff! xD I just really like your channel and the professional crafts you produce so i haven't got the slightest clue. Anyways, keep up the good stuff!

As the dumbo I am, I spread the plasti paste without gloves on and now my fingers tips are covered with what it feels like dried superglue. Any advice? Am I going die?

dunno how likely I am to get a reply, but I'm wanting to make a skull replica of a cubone skull out of resin to use as decoration in my snake's tank, how would you suggest I go about doing this as far as making a mold, and what resin would you suggest to not be toxic? go to thingiverse and look up cubone skull then download the file then go to 3dhubs and find someone in your area with a 3d printer and upload the file or you might be able to go to a public library as they also have 3d printers for public use
I made a 3D wooden Mask from the Jim Carrey movie and what if i need to capture the detail on the interior of the mask, should i go with a one part mold for that rather than a two part mold?

What is that white block that you used to mold on. I assume it is a nonstick smooth surface of some kind?

+Punished Props I think they meant like a "helmet", like a 3 part jacket mold. This showed us a good way for masks, but not so much helmets.

These particular ones are fairly tame, but it pays to always read the MSDS.

Is there anything you can use instead of the Plasti Paste to make your jacket mold? It's really expensive and if I can find a cheaper alternative that would be great!
You can use plaster bandages for a cheaper alternative.

As the dumbo I am, I spread the plasti paste without gloves on and now my fingers tips are covered with what it feels like dried superglue. Any advice? Am I going die?
I would avoid getting it on your hands. Read the MSDS that came with the product for safety tips.
I'm looking for a body safe silicone that is SUPER STRONG!!! I'm going to be making The Penetrator Bat from Saints Row and I want it to be able to swing and it not snap in two.
How could yo control de thickness of the walls?, I have to do like a tablet prototype(with walls, not completely solid), and I'm looking on how to do it, seems to me this can work.
It is possible to make another inner mold with a 3 millimeters inner offset and use it like a restrictor and form the wall to a certain thickness?......help me please xD....very good tutorial
dunno how likely I am to get a reply, but I'm wanting to make a skull replica of a cubone skull out of resin to use as decoration in my snake's tank, how would you suggest I go about doing this as far as making a mold, and what resin would you suggest to not be toxic? I saw someone selling one on a local reptile page but he never replied, and now I desperately want one, thanks in advance!
it be easier to just 3d print a cubone skull and you wouldn't have to deal with any toxic resins
harry drake I had considered that but I would have no idea how to go about finding a 3D printer or how to work it :/
go to thingiverse and look up cubone skull then download the file then go to 3dhubs and find someone in your area with a 3d printer and upload the file or you might be able to go to a public library as they also have 3d printers for public use

I made a 3D wooden Mask from the Jim Carrey movie and what if i need to capture the detail on the interior of the mask, should i go with a one part mold for that rather than a two part mold?
You'll have to get creative with a two part mold to get the inner detail of a mask like that.
