  • Today is, of course, the anniversary of the execution of Queen Anne Boleyn, second wife of King Henry VIII, on 19th May 1536 at the Tower of London.
    In today's Fall of Anne Boleyn video, Claire Ridgway, founder of the Anne Boleyn Files and author of several books on the Boleyns, explains exactly what happened on this day and shares Queen Anne Boleyn's execution speech.

      RoseLynn Covington--Mary, Queen of Scots met her end with dignity. However, the first blow hit her on the back of the head, causing her to groan. The second severed her neck almost completely, but a third was required to complete the bloody deed. Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury, refused to go quietly and was forced down onto the block. Her executioner was quite inexperienced; It took eleven blows, reportedly, before she was declared dead. Cromwell's execution is usually represented as botched, but this source I found says otherwise. www.thehistorypress.co.uk/articles/thomas-cromwell-and-the-ungoodly-executioner/

    • @l.plantagenet
      @l.plantagenet 5 лет назад +18

      Mary H, i've wondered that too. She was probably pushed in the King's face by her family, but I have no proof just a feeling. She would have know being one of the Queen's ladies that the Queen was under a lot of pressure to have a son. She would have known the King would expect her to give him a son. I'm assuming all of this, of course. I wouldn't have wanted to be in Jane Seymour's place.

    • @kiera6326
      @kiera6326 5 лет назад +13

      There are rumours that it was actually Jane who convinced Henry to behead Anne instead if burn her, as she thought it too cruel and inhumane. Jane was Anne's lady in waiting; she knew that Anne was innocent of the crimes she was accused of, but still hated her because of the way Anne had treated her during her reign. Henry had sent Jane away the night before, and promised to join her once it was over. When the bells rang at 9:00, Jane Seymour was most likely a roiling mess of guilt, relief and pending dread.

    • @kiera6326
      @kiera6326 5 лет назад +8

      @Honesty and Truth+ And I completely agree with all of that. But I think what we also have to keep in mind is that Jane was also- historically- _kind._
      She obeyed and served Henry, as that is what she, as a virtuous woman, was raised to do, but I also think that she would have been stunned and horrified to find out what Henry had in store for Anne, especially since she- deep down- knew she was innocent. She probably would have volcalised her horror without meaning to, and Henry, being in love with her, sought to soothe her instantly and agreed to give Anne a more merciful death.
      Jane, despite being meek and submissive, had just as much influence over Henry as Anne did when he was besotted with her. She had control over Henry whether she knew it or not.
      Her family made sure of that.

    • @kiera6326
      @kiera6326 5 лет назад +6

      @Honesty and Truth+ Exactly. There _are_ no documents saying that Jane swayed Henry; it was simply a rumour. What I'm saying, is that if that rumour _was_ true, Jane wouldn't have been demanding and pushy about it like Anne. She just would have been horrified, exclaimed something like "That's horrible!" And Henry would have tried to placate her and eventually agreed to behead her instead. After all, it was Jane's compassion and mildness that drew Henry, I believe. I don't think Jane really intended on changing his mind and it all would have been over before she could process it, but Jane probably disapproved of alot of things Henry did in the time she knew him- particularly with Katherine and Mary- but never voiced it because of the reasons you stayed. She would have been neither been pushy, nor manipulative. But she still _held_ power over Henry because he was so in love with her, something that her family would have realised and tried to convey to her. Jane probably never knew the power she had over Henry, and even if she did, I doubt she would have used it because of her place and her morals. Henry would never think any less of her as a wife if it was only in situations like these, but I doubt that Jane would have taken her chances with it.

    • @steppy3736
      @steppy3736 5 лет назад +3

      I suspect she was considering how to *not* end as CoA and Anne Boleyn. Being the wife of Henry couldn't have created a sense of security and safety. Henry was too mercurial.

    The end of Queen Anne Boleyn is the name of your video but that couldn't be further from the truth. She lost her life on this day 483 years ago at the hands of an insane fat murdering tyrant who tried to erase her from history but he failed miserably, Anne's story is so inspiring that she's still being talked about to this day after all this time and will still be talked about centuries from now because she was such an intelligent and confident woman at a time when us women were no more then cattle, she was just so different. So in a sense she will never end but will live on forever.
    R.I.P Queen 👑🌹 Anne and Elizabeth weren't able to be together in life for very long but I hope in death that they were reunited, I hope that they've been together in heaven all this time ❤️

    I read once that Anne Boleyn believed that, since no queen of England had been executed in the past, she would receive the king's pardon and be sent to a nunnery. If that is true, that MIGHT be why there was no coffin prepared to remove her remains. It is also likely, though, that Henry VIII made no provision for a coffin since he was done with her (even though he provided her with money to pay the execution to "strike true". After all, some executions were horribly botched messes). Mel Brooks uses the line, "It's good to be the king" frequently in his comedies. That may be true, but it is certainly NOT good to be the queen-at least in Henry VIII's reign.

    So cool that the bells rang out to celebrate the life of Queen Anne! No banns, no taste, no mourning, just a really badly done quickie execution so Henry could get on with his next breeding mare.
    It is unbelievable that one person held that much power with no morals or accountability to anyone. He was a real monster. And no one could tell him he was a murderer. They just all got ready to have another Queen, like this was ok. I guess what else could they do?
    I sure wish we had a look into how those three years had gone for them. I know she mentioned that she was kind of uncooperative or combative. But seriously, two pregnancies in three years indicates they were still getting busy. And, really, the miscarriage was Henry's fault. If he'd have been more careful with his helmet, she probably wouldn't have lost the baby from the shock of his horrific injuries and thinking he might die.
    @ClaireRidgway, thank you so much for humanizing this amazing lady. You have given so much of your time doing this special series of videos for us, in addition to the other series. It is so unbelievable to me that I can actually talk to someone of such vast knowledge of the Tudors, and she is willing to share so much of it with random people who share her passion!! I feel honored just to be able to talk to everyone on here. I really hope Anne knows that she was vindicated and that people all around the world are celebrating her life and mourning her death. And, that her daughter grew up to be the strong, opinionated, beloved Gloriana who ruled her people with grace and love and she did it so much better than her father.

    I like the fact that Queen Anne said at the end of her speech that if anyone would 'meddle with my cause' they were to 'judge the best.' Poor Anne! So sad to see that this is what came of Henry VIII's disappointment. I wonder what he would have said had he known that males are responsible for pregnancy? He probably would have sent any doctor or scientist who had that theory, to the Tower. His narcissistic fury became worse, the more she tried to please him but could not do the one thing which would have saved her life. (This reminds me of the phrase, "You only had one job...," which was Henry's attitude towards her.) The fact that he made Cranmer write a dispensation the same day that Anne died, is proof that she was already gone from his mind, and nothing that happened to her made any difference to him. Anne, we remember you and wish you well.

    I’m glad there will be another video; when I got to the entry of. May 20th in the book, I wondered if some would be folded into the On This Day in Tudor History video or touched on here. This whole time I knew this series couldn’t end any other way, and I could not help but feel such dread in the last few days. Anne bore herself with such courage in the face of such injustice, and time will never change or reduce the cruelty of the false allegations against her. I wish something could be done to clear her name officially.
    Thank you for not only making this series, but for your measured take on this history. So many historians and authors have a compassionate take, but only about one or two of the subjects, and others are painted horribly. You are steadier than that, and I appreciate that. These were women in a horrible position in a fundamentally dangerous time, with little option but to make the best of the situation. You don’t shame them for that, and I appreciate it. We’re so quick to categorize these women under the Madonna/whore dichotomy, a lack of nuance that is to no one’s benefit. You also do not reduce Anne to her reproductive victory in being the mother of Elizabeth I. Yes, without the falcon, there would be no Gloriana, and seeing the triumph of her daughter’s reign would make her The Most Happy! But she lived and breathed and died very her own person. Thank you for advocating for her and working to reduce the myth and shadow gathered about her name. Long live Anna Regina. She is at peace, “A Queen in heaven.”

    I am loving your videos so much and I look forward to reading your books. Thank you! I have been so fascinated at this time in history and the monarchies and how people lived and how they thought. I have never been interested in watching "The Tudors" or "Game of Thrones". I believe reading about these people from eye witnesses and reading their actual words in letters is much more interesting. I love that you care so much about these real people who had feelings and desires. I love that you remind us all of their humanity. They were just like us! Your compassion for their souls is beautiful. I am so happy I discovered you and these videos!

    Thanks Clare. So sad. Did most people disbelieve the charges against her or was the king believed? Not sure why a woman ie Jane would want to marry a wife killer king.

      After seeing what he had done to Katherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn, if i had been Jane I would have done my best to turn off old Henry's ardor, dressed poorly, went with messed up hair, visibly dirty, spoke like an idiot, etc. She would have had to be careful thanks to her brothers greed and ambition and also not to inflame Henry's temper but I would have wanted to make him look elsewhere, especially when he decided to eliminate the last queen by execution. Not a good prospect for one's future.

      According to one documentary I saw, Jane agreed to marry Henry in the hope of persuading him to reconcile with the pope and restore Catholicism. As such, Jane may have willingly shouldered the danger. She may have also believed that it would never happen to her, since Anne was a homewrecker who'd made a lot of enemies with her pride and temper, whereas Jane was a proper modest and submissive woman.
      That was in England. Mary of Guise-- Mary, Queen of Scots' mother-- is said to have refused Henry's offer of matrimony with a quip about having a little neck. After the annulment of his marriage with Anne of Cleves, there were no more foreign marriages. It may be because of Henry's infatuation with the young Catherine Howard, but I think the unwillingness of other rulers to make marriage contracts with a king notorious for not keeping them was also a factor.

    You have to wonder, given how powerful religion and the idea of Heaven and Hell were in the era, if Anne hadn't just reached the end of her resources to battle the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune as she ascended the scaffold. She'd had an exhausting existence. Think of her life. She might have been more than willing to place her fate in the hands of God than live another cruel day under the tyranny so many women endured. And Henry was desperate to be rid of Anne. He needed legitimate sons. Heir upon heir to secure the Tudor Dynasty. He truly believed God had had put him upon the throne to place a Tudor Male upon the Throne of England forever.

    Thank you for sharing all this with us. Such a sad time in history. Such a tale of be careful what you wish for, & be careful what you do to obtain it. Such a tragic situation, I honestly believe Queen Anne loved him when he was young, and then when he became the tyrant, he was terrifying. Believed she loved her daughter beyond all reason, as back then just to have one child live would have been just so amazing. I hope that in the next world they share many joyous moments together & are both happy in finally being together.
    You have explained this time period with great insights, clarity & more realistically than I've even read before. Though your videos are great & have extra material for my birthday in August will need to obtain your books. I love to read but prefer productive reading. Auto/Bio's History How to, etc. but to be honest my mom said I'd read & be lost in a cereal box ingredients list that's how much I love to read, to me it's like air. Thank you again.

    I visited the Tower twice, and got a chill when I was in the parade ground. Thank you for this excellent series of videos. The swiftness of her fall is astounding to me, but not surprising in light of the king's temperament and reprehensible behavioral history. I think he became a psychotic tyrant, whether it was a result of his accident or not. Thank you for presenting Queen Anne Boleyn as a real woman in an inescapable situation. I believe she was innocent of all charges, and would never have committed incest. Your work is brilliant, as always.

    A queen is executed, her daughter, also a queen, is released from prison, and one more event took place on this day in history. Prince Harry married Meghan Markle in 2018. Of all the things, good & bad , that have been written about them, I haven't seen anyone mention this. Queen Anne Boleyn, God rest her soul. She was innocent, & wronged in so many ways. Along with all the others that were falsely accused with her. May they all rest in peace. 🙏😢😞👑💐🌹
