You should add a dessert portion: When your teacher/mentor constantly tells you how good you are, that you should be getting paid to do your thing, but they won't hire you for the group they're in charge of and instead expect you to volunteer for it -- a nice helping of trust and good will, mix and pour in ramekins, then add FIRE.

I feel you, Steven! I'm a creative professional myself, and I've been offered "exposure" as payment more times than I can count. It's frustrating, because we know that exposure doesn't pay the bills. We need to be able to make a living from our work, and we shouldn't have to work for free.
I think it's important to remember that our work has value. We deserve to be paid for our time and our skills. If someone wants to use our work, they should be willing to pay us for it.
So next time someone tries to offer you "exposure" as payment, don't be afraid to say no. Your work is worth more than that.
I might be a broke failure and disappointment, but at least I’m generously seasoned with it

In school I had to pay to have exposure. One year of exposure set me back $25k (and yes I commuted from home to save money. I know, I really lived it up as a grad student) in the form of an internship. I couldn't even afford to receive the services I was providing. But I got great exposure.
