funfact, most of old asian parents wish their kids to be a doctor some day, while "going to the doctor" is the bottom of the list of solution if someone is sick.
It's one of the Asian paradoxes. Another one is making your kid start an instrument as a toddler, putting time and money into it, making them practice for 15 years until they reach a high level and win competitions, and then being outraged that they want to become a professional musician...

At the end of the day, a lot of extra curriculars are allegedly suppose to help get into a good university, and to be fair, their thinking isn't totally wrong or completely unfounded. In the US, and by extension in Europe, its more accepted to succeed in other various ways besides university, which is a good thing, but in many Asian countries, it is cultural accepted, or even natural, for a kid to forgo any type of entertainment, and only work and work and work to get into a good university and job. Being immigrants that grew up under these conditions, its hard to wrap around these concepts of other various ways of succeeding, because from what they experienced when they were growing up, they probably have seen many of their peers not work hard or try to be the best end up poor and miserable. Not to say that they shouldn't try and understand the different culture, but at the same time, its sort of understandable why almost all Asian parents think that way.

When Eddy said he studies talent shows it reminded me of all the times we saw stripping and flight of the bumblebee. Something inside me unleashed. I knew what would happen. Eddy showed up. My father was an electronic engineer. He had a gift of incredible memory- could know the engineering of the space station over a weekend then teach it on Monday. I told him I wanted to be a artist. He said " You want to see some Art? Give me your pens, pencils, markers and crayons. Give me your drawing paper." Then he starts sketching...then you can hear him drawing- no erasing mind you..then he took my crayons then the markers..Less than 10 min later he stops.Then all of a sudden he goes "Here... Cool huh? Just so you know I clear 150k a year..What art you gonna do huh?" I looked at what he drew.....it was literally our house and every other house on the street..down to minute details..the front yards, cars etc. Even the old lady across the street!! I was shocked. EMOTIONAL DAMAGE!!
As an asian with some pretty tough parents that always compare, one thing I've always been grateful for is that they always encouraged me to try new things and be myself (as long as it doesn't impact studies lol). Thank you for making such a relatable skit :)

For real in 6th grade I once got a report card that had math as 99.98% and I was a disappointment. So then that week I forgot about going outside and did a Khan Academy medical science course, and showed my parents. That pushed me up to average.

As a Eurasian professional pianist/conductor with a Tiger Mom from Shanghai I was pre-med in my undergrad university years "to have something to fall back on". This was so on-point and funny! Frequently while growing up I heard the "A is not good enough, you should have gotten an A+" and the kitchen timer on the piano to make sure I practiced 60 minutes every day. And she couldn't have been prouder when I actually was able to have a career and success as a musician and didn't have to be a doctor :)

He had a gift of incredible memory- could know the engineering of the space station over a weekend then teach it on Monday.
I told him I wanted to be a artist.
He said " You want to see some Art? Give me your pens, pencils, markers and crayons. Give me your drawing paper."
Then he starts sketching...then you can hear him drawing- no erasing mind you..then he took my crayons then the markers..Less than 10 min later he stops.Then all of a sudden he goes "Here... Cool huh? Just so you know I clear 150k a year..What art you gonna do huh?"
I looked at what he drew.....it was literally our house and every other house on the street..down to minute details..the front yards, cars etc. Even the old lady across the street!! I was shocked. EMOTIONAL DAMAGE!!

I always appreciate that TwoSet manages to be good hearted at the core and have that mix of sincerity/vulnerability and comedy. For real in 6th grade I once got a report card that had math as 99.98% and I was a disappointment. So then that week I forgot about going outside and did a Khan Academy medical science course, and showed my parents. That pushed me up to average.

As a Eurasian professional pianist/conductor with a Tiger Mom from Shanghai I was pre-med in my undergrad university years "to have something to fall back on". This was so on-point and funny! Frequently while growing up I heard the "A is not good enough, you should have gotten an A+" and the kitchen timer on the piano to make sure I practiced 60 minutes every day. And she couldn't have been prouder when I actually was able to have a career and success as a musician and didn't have to be a doctor :)
