    After the success of 2009’s Avatar, Hollywood was determined to make Sam Worthington the next big leading man. Along with Terminator: Salvation, he was put at the forefront of several huge productions- one of which was a remake of the 1981 film Clash of the Titans.
    Clash of the Titans definitely raises some questions though. Like why is this called Clash of the Titans when there are zero titans in it? What’s the Kraken doing here in a Greek Mythology story? What was the point of those two guys who show up for a bit and then randomly leave? Why was Perseus so selective about which god gifts to accept? Why didn’t Zeus bring back his family in the end?
    To answer all these questions, check out the pitch meeting that led to Clash of the Titans.

Funny thing, way down at the bottom of the page under "See also" is Cetos - an ancient sea monster slain by Perseus in Greek myth. So this is a case of writers, of the original film, choosing a better known name for a sea monster, rather than writers of this film getting their mythological deeds wrong.

      Yeah, that’s always a big problem I have with stories featuring Medusa.
      At best, she’s defending herself; at worst, she’s a victim of horrible circumstance, and some stories *insist* on making her a horrible victim.
      What’s even sadder is that I only know of two stories where Medusa is portrayed more favorably-Disney’s Hercules: The Animated Series (where she does get a happy ending, but doesn’t become a main character), and (I kid you not) an ASMR RP series by Macalda Reye called “Meeting A Modern Medusa.”
      Which… I mean, I like ASMR RPs, and I recommend checking that one out because it gives her story some justice, but that’s still much too low for a character like her…
      Honestly, I’d pay money for a reimagining of the original story where she becomes a hero or at least helps Perseus and gets to live in peace afterward.

Ovid's telling isn't 'wrong' in any sense but it is strongly divergent with all the other sources which talk about Medusa and Perseus.

      There is a bit more to it than that. The elements were always there and Ovid didn’t strictly retcon or make things up. He just gave it a different perspective, which, if the pattern holds, he wasn’t actually the first to do so. A lot of writings and plays are lost to us, but the pattern of looking at the same story through a different lens is certainly well established in the Greek mythos, from Prometheus to Medea, we actually see this at play. Ovid is certainly the most visible and the best at it. His skill at writing is absurdly and annoyingly good. So, he’s the first that we have that fully reimagines the story, but there’s nothing to indicate he was truly the first. We’re also talking about a myth that arose during the Greek Dark Age after the Bronze Age collapse and was codified in the 700s or 600s BC while Ovid writes around the turn of the millennium. Even in 300 years in Greece myths and stories change radically, let alone up to 700 years of oral, poetic, and prose tradition

    3:14 Not really Ryan, in Greek mythology she was always an evil monster since birth. It was actually the Roman writer Ovid who lived in the 1st century AD who came up with a tragic backstory for Medusa as a critique of the Roman government.

  • @clockworktri
    @clockworktri Год назад +66

    Just to reassure everyone - Medusa was born a gorgon (and NOT a victim of SA) in all versions except for the one by the Roman poet Ovid. Because Ovid's whole deal was that he saw the gods as petty a-holes and all his re-tellings were to illustrate that.
    So people can choose to find meaning in the story as one of surviving SA if they want. But you can also just see her and her sisters through the original meaning of some big ol' monsters with cool powers, and not feel bad about that.

    My favourite thing about this movie is that Nanny McPhee is in it. I think Emma Thompson said in an interview that they were filming in studios next to each other and she paid Liam Neeson a visit and hid behind his throne in a scene. The camera was on Fiennes but anyway.

    The plot of the movie does in fairness make slightly more sense than the actual story of Perseus. Those Greek myths were pretty out there.

      Actual story of Perseus is much better, it's more personal and conflicting involving safety of Perseus's own mother as well as lots of adventure. And the best part is that in there Hades is an ally while Poseidon is the villain releasing the cetus monster to kill Andromeda.
