I really find Dan and Herbert's relationship so interesting. Like at first glance it seems like Herbert might just be using Dan, but then in both films he seems almost jealous of Dan's other relationships. And then in this, he doesn't create a bride for himself (as the title would suggest) but basically as a gift for Dan. And as James points out, West never looks happier than when Dan finally volunteers to inject the reagent to the bride himself. And then you've got Dan, who loves to try to take the moral high ground, but pretty much always covers for West and helps with his experiments. You can argue that he's a doctor and really believes they can beat death, but at a certain point it feels like he's using any excuse to side with West.
Herbert gives me sexually repressed vibes, like he basically has devoted his entire life to science to avoid dealing with people. Then Dan comes along and Herbert actually forms a bond with someone else. Giving Dan, who is heterosexual, a bride is the closest Herbert can get to sexual gratification.

West exhibits jealousy when the bride shows attraction to Dan rather than him, aaand the following short interaction more or less is an indicator as to where his sexual preference lies. I wouldn't go so far as to say my observations are canon, but I think there's evidence of some level of attraction/crush. I will say, keep in mind that including homosexuality or even homosexual undertones doesn't automatically make something "politically correct." You can include gay characters without a message, agenda, or whatever. And that includes over the top horror comedies.

The best thing about Herbert West as a character is his unwavering optimism. He genuinely believes his work will benefit mankind as a whole, that he's doing good things. He may be doing horrible things but his heart is in the right place. It's not like Hammer's Frankenstein who is evil and does his experiments for evil reasons.
It could be optimisim, or it could be denial and egoism. No matter who gets hurt in the process, Herbert MUST prove to EVERYONE that he is the genius that he thinks he is. No matter how many zombies he creates, he always thinks that his reanimator is a “cure” not a curse. But thats what I like about his character, you can look at it in both directions. :)
I see Herbert west in the same way as Frankenstein, being in somewhat denial about his work, but remaining optimistic throughout the entire ordeal unlike Frankenstein, who eventually becomes depressed and somewhat self-hating.
Fact: the “cutting into her chest and sticking his hands in” scene shown at 15:20 is most likely Wes attempting to manually pump the patient’s heart. It is an actual thing that doctors and paramedics preform in some cases such as them being in a state that normal recitation is not a viable option
I think one of my favorite cut things from the first movie is that Herbert West would shoot up with his reagent to stay awake for long hours and because of that I suspect the reason he always survives his scrape with death is because his reagent works. You just have to take it before you die.
90% of Re-Animator's plot seems to go like this. "You're a loose cannon West! I'm through helping you!" "But Dan I've got a syringe of this green goo-" "Say no more fam, I'm in."
Even with the deleted scene, there is an alternate explanation. Which is why I prefer the scenes back in. For starters, Hill's psychic ability may have been padding, but it does remind us that we are watching a Lovecraft movie taking place in Arkham. Meaning West's experiments are tame compared to what else is out there, from the Color Out of Space to any Old Ones story. But I ramble on. There was another deleted scene where Herbert routinely injects himself with a diluted version of the Re-Agent. He says it helps him bypass REM sleep and keep his brain sharp. As a side effect, it probably made him harder to kill.

I'm convinced that Jeffery Combs could turn any speech no matter how good or poorly written and make it into a badass speech. Dude is an amazing actor if not my personal favorite
West opening up Gloria's chest then sticking is hand in was manual heart palpitations. Which is, you guessed it, physically pumping the heart to reestablish blood flow and resuscitate the individual. Its pretty extreme but apparently it does work. Surprisingly medically accurate there.
That Eyeball Hand creature is actually kinda cute. I want one as a pet. Edit: Also, I forgot how scientifically accurate this movie was until the Bride's death. The whole reason the Bride died was because of the entire nature of her existance. You see, The Bride was entirely made up of different body parts resuscitated by the re-serum. As a result, each individual body part had all their systems restarted, and most importantly to the cause of death, the immune system. Since the Bride was a mish-mash of random parts with no coherency, as a result, each individual part's immune system would begin fighting against the other body parts, since there is no match of origin to be found. As a result, the constant clash of bodily functions would result in the body shutting itself down and forcing the invading parts out of the body, resulting in the gibbed death of the Bride we see in the movie. The only part that seemed to live through the chaos was Meg's heart, as it's still functioning like normal when the rest of the corpse is clinically dead.
After reading this comment I am now remembering the adventure time episode when Ice King gathered the body parts of princesses to make a monster wife princess for himself. I can't believe how messed up the early adventure time episodes were. They were to awesome!
The Eccentric Naturalist weird info but there actually is an Alfred Hitchcock Presents episode “Hands of Mr. Ottermole” where a similar concept of “consciousness resides in every part of the body” that Herbert West touches on. I thought it was a potential homage to that episode. ^_^
When they're trying to resuscitate the terminal patient would have been a good establishing shot for the characters. Dan goes further than any of the normal doctors to try and save her, followed by West splitting her apart to do a more advanced, but obviously dangerous and reckless form of CPR
Is it just me or does anyone else find it really pleasing to look at when he tallies the kills and all of the figures (24:32) of the people who died are shown with their own unique person showing how they died and it would be cool for a shirt showing this for certain films

Am I the only one who feels sad for the bride because Dan rejected her at the end of the movie? She was created for him and I felt like that was her purpose and in the end he simply abandoned her minutes after creating her.
Re-Animator is a good representation of the idea that "No One Self Identifies as the Villain". "Mad Scientist" is a well worn trope, but it's rare that you can believe that the Scientist genuinely thinks he's doing good Science. And that it is the morally correct thing to do.

Am I the only one who feels sad for the bride because Dan rejected her at the end of the movie? She was created for him and I felt like that was her purpose and in the end he simply abandoned her minutes after creating her.
