No mention of Ultima's morality system, or the controversial games that created the software ratings board. All that, if possible, against friends using null modems or dial-up to other extensions in the household. Great list, I found a lot of my favourite games on that list. But I also feel the action-adventure genere was overlooked. Games like Tomb Raider, Prince of Persia, God of War and Assassins Creed were deffenetly influential and at least one of them were worty of mention.
It just dawned to me that this masterpiece of a video is already 10 years old. Why won't the time stop?? I showed this historical document to a bunch of passionate young teenagers not too long ago. While 2013 really feels just like yesterday to me, it became clear that even within those 10 fairly uneventful years, the industry has changed once more. No mention of Fortnite or Overwatch surely rises some younger kids' eyebrows alone. But that got me thinking: what newer games would the 2023 updated version include? Death of the MGS saga with the MGSV? Yet another return of GTA? Nier Automata saving a borderline bankrupt Square-enix? Yakuza franchise finally breaking through in the West after Y0? Gatcha traps slowly escaping the Asian market and infecting tons of mobile players?
So many good memories. Thank you, Stu. Though, I am surprised you didn't mention Mortal Kombat's effect on the rating system. But I'm sure you had a reason.
surprising that there is no mention of crysis series, which obviously has proved to be a pretty standard to show the capabilities of the hardware and even project igi which was so viral in the period contemprory to late 1990's..any word on that?
André Perez Segato He mentioned Metal Gear, the godfather of stealth games. Metal Gear Solid (while one of the greatest games of all time) was basically Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake in 3d. Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake is my favorite video game of all time so I am a bit bias. Still, MGS for the Ps1 was not really ground breaking. Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake had all the features first such as the ability to crouch, the first game to have compelling story and how a saga was possible because the story expanded to a large level (Metal Gear 1 was inspired by action films which explains why it's story is cliche), and unlike MGS1, Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake had a much better enemy ai. That is no question.
I knew you were expecting this Stu but I just wanted to say how can you miss the 1999 Silent Hill, not only is it arguably the best survival horror series but it also spawned legions of indie games, stories and comics

Pretty sure no-one wants to think or remember of the NES Metal Gear games. The MSX2 games are the nicer ones, MG 2: Solid Snake being an outright classic.
This was a great overview! You can only fit so much history into 19 minutes and for the purpose of this video, it's easy for anyone to use as a base timeline and they can add in more games where applicable.
Command & conquer, warcraft, total war series, need for speed series, gta san andreas, far cry and crysis, battlefield series were left out but should have been added, other than that excellent summary in just 20min, could have mentioned steam and online distribution's contribution too.

it's not pink, it's electric salmon
XCOM came back
Definetely do a series with each episode focusing on a specific genre.
"its not pink its electric salmon"
good to know
I think Battlefield should've made an appearence, as well as Assassin's Creed.
What I can definitely tell you is that the last 100 years are some of the most exciting ever to happen on earth.
So many good memories. Thank you, Stu.
Though, I am surprised you didn't mention Mortal Kombat's effect on the rating system. But I'm sure you had a reason.
I love how he didn't even mention anything by EA
Good
good
Tf did ea made tho. Their library popular games was made by bought smaller developers. All i can remember theymade is madden.
surprising that there is no mention of crysis series, which obviously has proved to be a pretty standard to show the capabilities of the hardware and even project igi which was so viral in the period contemprory to late 1990's..any word on that?
Sameer Madarkar Crysis was crowded out by a host of more significant titles from 2007. Project IGI is a well-regarded but otherwise fringe FPS.
It all works like this
Pac man - changed that we don’t need space shooting games
Mario - changed 3D games forever
Sonic - the speed of a game
Now, never ending battle royale genre and competitive FPS
I find disappointing that Splinter Cell is mentioned on behalf of Metal Gear Solid :(
Ahoy has something against MGS, I guess.
I knew you were expecting this Stu but I just wanted to say how can you miss the 1999 Silent Hill, not only is it arguably the best survival horror series but it also spawned legions of indie games, stories and comics
the second was alot better
Jayden Mclean I wouldn't say a lot but it was better
Killer97 in my opinion resident evil is better but it is good too
Stu you're the baddest. Love the vintage font and style of the recent films
I really like the way you do your videos, very professional and feels like i'm watching a TV show.
Comments: People telling him that he missed this game and that game...
Comments: people taking the time to comment on what other users are commenting about, not realizing he is, by that very act, part of the human centipede.
4:52 METAL GEAR SOLID IS THE BEST VIDEO GAME SAGA EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just wow. Can't believe the effort and dedication that went into this lovely trip down memory lane. Thank you, kind sir. And well done!
this is one of the best and friendliest discussions on the internet, i think we deserve a pat on the back
you should do a video of glitches some helpful some breaking some fun
What about saint row? It did go off the rails though...
What has saints row brought to the table that is ground breaking ?
Poo flinging. Never been done before.
Hitting people with wavy pink dildos the size of baseball bats? :p
Surprisingly he hasn't mentioned any Saints Row game in the videos I've seen so far. I wonder if he ever played them at all
serious feels for those of you who grew up in the 80s/90s, i feel old looking at this video and im 18, but i remember getting and xbox 360 just for halo 3
It was pretty weird seeing 2013 and then the end of the video until seeing that this video was made in 2013.
i still play lemmings :D
Pretty sure no-one wants to think or remember of the NES Metal Gear games. The MSX2 games are the nicer ones, MG 2: Solid Snake being an outright classic.
This was a great overview! You can only fit so much history into 19 minutes and for the purpose of this video, it's easy for anyone to use as a base timeline and they can add in more games where applicable.
This video is great motivation for me to make my own projects.
Currently studying to become an engineer.
how in the world could you do a 19 minute long video about video games without mentioning Tomb raider ! WTF !!
what about silent hill, mortal kombat, tomb raider, black ops, battlefield, crysis, and medal of honor!
Specially, Medal of Honor. Allied Assault =')
Crysis should definitely be there. The catch phrase "but will it run Crysis?" took a long time to fade.
Command & conquer, warcraft, total war series, need for speed series, gta san andreas, far cry and crysis, battlefield series were left out but should have been added, other than that excellent summary in just 20min, could have mentioned steam and online distribution's contribution too.
Ahoy is like a crack addiction
Why you didn't mention half life 3?
Because it'll be out 5 years after this video was made?
it was a joke
+flaggerify 5 years? that's awfully optimistic...
That's set to come out in eighteen more years. Hold off for a bit while the Dev team takes their time.
I'm from the future...
*Goldeneye 64*
yes, i'm on an ahoy binge. don't judge me please
FANTASTIC COMMENTARY!!!! This was brilliantly done, video games have been a constant throughout my life and I can see through yours also, you captured the first flickering flames of gaming right through to the last expertly. Thanks. :D
