    As a life long boater myself I would have to conclude there was some sort of systems failure here. These newer engines are all "fly by wire" where the engine throttle and gear and sometimes the steering are all computer controlled. I have seen several scenarios like this caused by some break between the steering wheel/throttles and the engines happened and the boat went where it wanted to. As to what could be done once the boat is on the rocks, not much without risking injury to the crew. That's a big boat and with no ability to control the power there is little they can do in those conditions. As long as the FBW controls have been out, I still prefer the old cable throttle and shift and traditional hydraulic steering on my boat.

    At the 17 or 18 second mark you can see the captain turn hard to port (which was necessary to compensate for the heavy wave action and Northward current), but only the two starboard-side engines appear to react accordingly. Remember, when you go to help a boat in distress and tie yourself to it, you become legally responsible for that boat and any damages it sustains while you're attempting to help. And while the captain of the distressed boat may not hold you accountable for damages, knowing how cold hearted insurance companies are his boat insurance company probably won't be so forgiving. Tow companies are exempt from this clause.

  • @longboarding0713
    @longboarding0713 2 года назад +33

    To me it looks like his port steering was disengaged and his starboard steering was still working. On a catamaran boat like this the port and starboard engines have separate electronic steering. The starboard engine being turned hard to port was not strong enough to turn the boat onto proper heading and once the captain realized this he threw both port and starboard engines in full reverse. TBH I would have done the same thing. Not much else you could do here given the speed he came into the inlet. Had he been going about 10 knots slower he probably could have thrown his port engines in reverse bringing the bow to port and completing the turn. For everyone saying "he should have been going slower" a slower ride would not have allowed him to maintain a safe dry heading given the heavy current and cross wind across the inlet.

    Alot of these newer boats use fly by wire throttles and electronic steering....Technology can be pretty nice, but it can also come with a price....and sometimes it has issues....I believe that's what you will see here....something with the steering went, you can see when he realized it wasn't turning, he tried to stop by slamming them into reverse.....I also wouldn't be surprised if one or two of those VRods ingested some water by doing that, but he really had no other options at the time.

    As a former member of the RNLI & Royal Navy, that was hard to watch! Glad the crew and boat are ok! The fact that the hull of that cat stayed intact, despite the constant crashing against the rocks, is testament to its great build quality. Your fire and rescue service did a great job! Not sure whether those cats have windlasses on them, but the only thing they could have done was to throw the anchor as far away from the boat as possible and then tried to pull themselves off of the rocks with the windlass. In those situations, the mind races and it's hard to formulate a plan.

    This might be a silly question, but why doesn't the rescue boat back up to the stricken boat as opposed to going in bow first. The rescue boat would have so much more control not only over its own boat but that of the stricken boat. By backing onto the stricken boat you have better steering control, you are able to easily pull away in the event you need to approach at a different angle and once hooked up you have soooo much more propulsion and control of both vessels. The only disadvantage of going in stern first is you could possibly get the life rope tangled in the props. I still think the life boat should've backed up.

    Commenters are pointing out that the port and starboard engine pairs are not turning in sync. If the boat is equipped with Joystick control, then the captain might have tried to utilize that to move the boat 'sideways' away from the rocks. The joystick will cause the outboards to turn in independently but coordinated motion and provide forward and reverse thrust to effective 'walk' the vessel sideways into or away from a dock, usually. However, the seastate was too much to overcome.

    They came in like they were trying to put it on the rocks, headed right into them, looked like a captain malfunction.

    Looks like a similar failure I encountered with the "drive by wire steering" once it fails there's zero response at the wheel and the engines won't hold themselves straight even.

    Why did Fire Rescue not tow from behind? Plus, why didn't they pull the Freeman away from the rocks...seems like they were pulling them parallel to the rocks? What took them SO long to grab a tow line and begin towing them off the rocks?
