LG Magic Remote disassembly / teardown / opening up. Last minute update: Use a credit card!

So yeah use an old credit card, instead of a knife or something metal. It's safer, and you can push harder without worrying about anything breaking, and it doesn't leave rough edges.

Thank you so much! My toddler spilt a drink on the remote and it wasn’t working, the light was always on, and it kept playing from my DVR. I had tried with both a credit card and my plastic phone opening tool. You edited to say use a credit card, but your video gave me the idea to use a nail file, one that was just metal and rounded at one end and with a curved pointy end to clean under nails. I mean my remote isn’t so pretty now, but it’s open, washed and now drying, the top bits I mean. The electrical contacts I sprayed with electronic cleaning spray (thought it was compressed air but not). I needed something a lot thinner than a credit card to open my virgin remote. Here’s hoping it works again once I reassemble it.

Thanks! Credit card was a little too thich at first. I used an edge of commercial plastic pacaging material and then plastic loyalty card. Worked like a charm and the buttons are not sticking amymore.

Thank you! I can’t do it with a credit card at all. It’s just splitting the credit card. Maybe a little thick because it’s a chip card. Going to try your way instead, or maybe a nail file. Wouldn’t even work with plastic phone opening tool.

A brand new replacement LG remote control from Amazon cost £23 so it might just be worth getting that, than risk damage and cuts to your hand!

thanks heaps mate.got the remote open the main button with the circle roll button buggered up on me.the thing that pisses me off is the fact LG is more expensive and getting cheaper product builds and harder to sort out your repair efforts all LG wants is to cost you more to buy another.never buying LG again.i'm also having great trouble pairing via blue tooth my subwoofer to my sound bar.i've tried everything and all the youtube vids and nothing works.can you help here????

- After disassembly, the remote looks like garbage.

Try these: To reset, take the battery out and leave it for a few minutes, and put it back again before you turn on the TV. After about 10 seconds, turn the remote towards the TV and press the wheel button in the middle. That’s it. You’ll get a ‘pairing is complete’ message on your screen. Now you can use your remote normally.
Initialize the Remote
If you were not successful in the above method then try and initialize the remote. To do this, press and hold smart home and back button on the magic remote for about 5 seconds. Now press the wheel button to pair the remote again as discussed in the previous step.
