He needs to listen to the same version we heard on the radio back in the day. In my opinion, the original is usually the best. Remakes come about through an artists admiration for the original, and even then, popularity comes down as a matter of personal taste.

I agree, you have to check out her breakout hit "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face".
She's quoted as saying: "It's a perfect song. It's the kind of song that has two unique & distinct qualities: it tells a story, & it has lyrics that mean something." "I wish more songs I had chosen had moved me the way that one did. I've loved [most] every song I've recorded, but that one was pretty special."

Roberta Flack's duets with Donny Hathaway in the 70s are really special. They include "The Closer I Get to You", and "Where Is the Love."
Now, Donny Hathaway is someone you really should check out. He was an amazingly gifted singer. His versions of "A Song For You" and "Someday We'll All Be Free" are transcendent! 😊
Sadly, as is too often the case, he died tragically in 1979 at 33 years of age, after falling from his 15th-floor room in New York City's Essex House hotel.
    RIP Donny ❤

I just listened to Lori's recording. She and Roberta have two very different voices. Lori strikes me as a quintessential 70s voice. Roberta takes it and like anyone who covers someone else's work, makes it her own. That's the trick with covering someone else's songs. Thanks BP for giving a shout-out to the writers of this song, sometimes they are the unsung heroes. Without these talented people writing these melodies, harmonies, and lyrics, a lot of singers who don't write their own stuff would not have much to do. The singers and the songwriters both deserve our respect.

This story is really about what it takes to create gold. It reminds me of how Dolly Parton wrote the song "I will always love you" then she heard Whitney Houston's version of it over the radio.
I guess we are grateful that song writers allow their songs to leave their nest. In time through another singers interpretation it is transformed into something so memorable, that we would have sworn that the version we know was the original.
Thank you for sharing the history of this song. Knowing it has made me appreciate all the people who helped to make it possible. The next time I hear Roberta Flack sing it, will remember how none of us are alone while we are creating.

I still get chills when I hear her sing this song. You got to react to "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". It's such a song of love. I thought I hadn't heard the Lauryn Hill version but I have. I didn't hear a live version, so I always wonder about auto tune. We know Roberta didn't have auto tune.

The two most beautiful songs ever recorded are Roberta Flack first time ever I saw your face... the studio version... and the Righteous Brothers Unchained Melody.... Great reaction. Thank you.

You know it's a timeless song when you can remember all the lyrics even if you haven't heard it for a long period.

If anyone didn’t know Roberta Flack wasn’t the writer they would easily assume she did by the way she sings it- she absolutely owns every word on stage and you believe every bit of it is a true story

I agree with you about Lauren Hill.
She in my opinion done the best cover of Killing Me Softly !
But I Love Everything Lauren Hill done both with the Fugees and Solo !

Roberta’s version is what I grew up with in the 70’s and would sing it all the time. Back when we wore out records. Then when Lauryn sang it with the Fugees I was blown away how great she did. I love the Fugees version, but Roberta and her beautiful voice that captivated me as a very young boy, nothing better.

I LOVE Roberta’s voice! So many great songs from her. Going totally off topic, have you reacted to two ladies that are singing in French?
Lara Fabian’s Je Suis Malade and Emma Kok’s Voila? You don’t have to know the words to feel them. They are that good.
