I think at least we call them "Buddy poppy" and yes memorial Day. there's one or parts of one on the mirror of every car I've had sence I was 20. WOW I just realized 32 years of going to memorial Day at fort Logan damn I'm old😎
My grandfather bought my father a brand new 34 five-window coup for graduation from high school. My father kept that car running until 1977 and sold it when he became ill. My father taught me to drive in that ford, my sister and brother as well. He called her the crescent lady because the first time he dated my mom there was a crescent moon in the sky. I so miss that car.
I wouldn't use the stripper. Maybe thinners would be better, but I think gentle wet sanding. It may take longer but will be safer. You cannot be too aggressive.
I was thinking a gentle wet sand with 600, until the grey is just barely hinting, then use some thinner - the sanded paint has more surface area and should come off quick. I'd also spend a little time on a hidden area experimenting with thinners to find some that dont affect the factory paint, and see if those are effective on the brush job.
Cracked me up that you jumped straight into the classifieds on those old papers. My grandpa saved every magazine he bought between '50-ish and the late '60s. I still like to thumb through them from time to time and daydream about buying an award-winning roadster for $1800.
What a score! You just keep rolling them in like so many strikes in a perfect three hundred game. Way to go. I just went and looked at what was touted as a '27 "T" bucket roadster with an Olds motor and it turned out to be a glass body on a home made tube chassis with a 455 CID motor. Not what I thought it would be. I'll keep looking! The El Camino is not quite done.
Today both the Pennsylvania Matts posted,@irontrap and @dieselcreek. 34 Ford archeology and taking down a silo. Different passions, both best stuff out there. Thanks guys
I don't know if this could help with the paint removal. I had success removing enamel paint using the product Purple power. I believe it has a trace on lye in it. You can try dollar store oven cleaner also. Just my 2 cents. 13:49 That is a Poppy flower that was given out on Memorial Day with a donation for the Vets.
I would use gun wash thinners. The top layers will be enamel and gun wash thinners will wash it off. I use it in a squirt bottle to clean paint out of engine bays.
I sell automotive refinish supplies and I have customers that will mix lacquer thinner with wax and grease remover (1:1). I have had good success with a generic urethane reducer. The old adage: start with the least aggressive and work it from there.
The paint underneath looks very cool👌🏽.I would try a good pressure washer and see how much or how well the paint goes off with it. If it is not well cleaned and prepared, a lot of it should come right off🤔if not i would carefully try a good paint stripper
This is a well preserved old car!! I never seen citra strip work before. Looks like a neat product. Working with old paint like this is tricky. I have used cheap lacquer thinner (as it is not as HOT) before and had good luck. The trick is the timing. How long do you leave it on is the key. A small jar or rattle can cap filled with thinner and a tooth brush is what I used. As soon as the top paint is off QUICK RINSE with water or some other mild??? to get the lacquer thinner to stop eating. Experiment in spots down below that you can't see well. A tooth brush works good as it removes the paint as you go. Normally factory paint is baked making it stronger. What I stripped was an old Honda CR125 tank someone had brushed with rustolium. It turned out really nice. Good Luck and do not be in a hurry!! This is a COOL car!!!
Wow, I can't believe how clean and untouched that car is. I'm so glad it found an owner that understands the importance of preserving it as a survivor. Personally the only visual changes I'd make would be to go back to the original headlight lenses and straighten out the front fender. The paint is a tough call, the car looks presentable as is from a distance, but I'm also curious how much original paint is left.
Boy , car in great shape . I remember cars being painted with brushes , bought 64 ford fastback had been painted black with brush , looked good 20 ft away. As always good video
Awesome find! Hard to believe these vehicles are still out there. Love to see the original paint, hopefully it can be polished up after removing the brushed on mess.
Morning Matt and Mike, I kinda figured you would keep this car, man the car's that have come your way, you have been able to pick up some fine vintage cars...is there anything that has come your way that you passed on? I realize you can't buy everything...thanks for sharing...Be safe, God Bless!!
Hey Matt & Mike, WOW ! What a find ! Exploring a vintage car is so much fun. This is going to be a good experiance for both of you. As a viewer I am excited to see this happen. It brings back so many memories from my teen days.
Very charming car...unpretentious...utilitarian and svelte while pleasing with durable and useful practicality are signs of scale and design success of that era...
Matt you truly got a "To Die For" with that 34 coupe!Glad to see you ended up with it because of the respect you have for cars in that condition. I cringe to think what would happen to it if it had ended up on the open market. Probably chopped! You got my ultimate dream car there. Not going to ask in a open forum cause it's your business only. But if you would not mind my asking, what did it set you back, PM me if you consent to share. I'd just love to know! In case I'd get lucky somehow. I know 34's are outrageous these days, prices all over the place. 20K for what I call a hulk. In any case congrats glad to see that coupe get the love it deserves!
Great start. I would reach out to a vintage detailer for some tips on what to use that will help preserve and clean the various materials and surfaces. Tha last thing I know you want is to do something to increase any degradation. Enjoyable as always.
#ITG it is good to see the new guy on this side of the camera. Hopefully it will become more of a feature. Welcome onboard officially, Mike! Really great you get to do this full time. A lot of work, but a lot of satisfaction. Keep the videos coming. Matt, that is a beautiful car. No pun intended. Ok, maybe a little intended.
Matt, that car is so solid it would be a good candidate to clean up and leave as is. Just get down to the original paint, put the original reflectors and lenses back in and just enjoy! Matt- Mojo Speed Shop and Lounge
shoulda added make it like a Jay Leno show room car. it needs it and deserves it since the woman loved and cherished it and took such wonderful care of it
When I was a teen car nut in the '60's these old heaps were still around, and often could be picked up for cheap. Also, lots of them were just rotting away, but could not be bought as the owners "had promised them to some spoiled grand kid" that didn't really want it anyway. One that comes to mind for me is a '34 Plymouth 5 window that sat a few blocks over from my house for years. The old guy lived in a ratty old trailer, and finally he said he'd take $75 bucks for it. My buddy and I tugged it out to the street, pulled for a block or two til fired up, then test drove for a ways. It smoked like chimney and ran badly, and had no brakes. We offered $35 in view of all the work it needed, he turned it down. It sat in that yard many more years then finally disappeared.
I used a tire pump just like that many times for my bicycle, and with an adapter for basketball, football! But, not everyone had one, almost always someone in the neighborhood had one, we could borrow, as long as we brought it back, which was never not a consideration, that is actually a poppy given away by the VFW, other military groups, on Memorial Day!!
My cousin Rocky restored a '34 Ford back to original in the late 60's. He said he was going to give it to his 5 year old son when he turned 16. I'll never forget what the boy said to his dad on his 16th birthday. "Are you kidding? I don't want to be seen driving THAT!" He wanted a Mustang. It was still in Rocky's garage when he died in 2010. Now the son has it and drives it.
Bonnie and Clyde era Rod! Beautiful car Matt. Definitely a candidate for a gnarly motor job :-)) Custom tig job headers out the side all wrapped or something lol Cool!
To find a car of that age that hasn't been screwed with is rare. Its in great condition too. That Saturday afternoon driveway paint job may be pretty hideous but its probably stopped the car rusting. LOL It will be great to see if you can free it up and get it to run sometime in the future. Dad had the use of a 30s ford with mechanical brakes and during the early 50s and said you had to stomp on the pedal and count to 3 before the car stopped. LOL You can get a lot of lost movement in the linkages. Have fun with it guys.
Matt, i know it's not for sale...but if it was what would you ask for it?That is my DREAM CAR....DAMN......If it was mine I would clean it up real good, do a PM the whole car&buy new tires, and drive the HELL out of it....A daily driver....THAT"S WHAT I'd DO.....DAMN I LOVE THAT Diamond in the rut.....YOU GUY'S GOT IT GOING ON.....Take care of you & yours my friend's......
d germ is a really good cleaner/disinfectant for cleaning interiors. it gets rid of smells too. i get it from menards, a home improvement store. i've bought some ten year old cars that weren't in as good of shape as this is. once in a lifetime find, i'm telling ya. she's still beautiful after all these years.
I thought the yellow and black one was the most lovely. That's the one that made me wish it was mine at least. Unfortunatley we don't have any old garage find 1934 Fords here in the UK.
If the citrus strip won't get the paint...use Oven Off. The VW community has been using it for decades now. I've stripped quite a few VWs back to original paint using Oven Off. Stuff in the Yellow can is the best if you can find it, "Original" brand. Good luck! Paint Stripper available at Paint supply stores is not the paint stripper of old. It is absolutely worthless now (well, not really...it's about $65 a gallon).
does anybody else recall getting S&H green stamps, and sticking them in the booklets? i fondly do, and turning them in for discounts...better times..least more fun shopping experience...
Matt that’s a sweet time capsule of a car. I agree with marvel’s mystery oil that engine. Wonder what it will take to get off the hand paint job? Once done it will look fantastic
Back in the day when it was painted the thinner for the paint would have been mineral turpentine,so I would try that or kerosene to break that paint down, then wet sand and buff it ,just my opinion.keep up the great vids and hard work .
As a retired body & paint guy, I’m guessing that it’s been brush painted with enamel. Personally I’d try some nitro cellulose thinner (if it’s still available in the States, it’s been banned here in the U.K.) & do a couple of test areas with it on a cloth. I’d try & match the top colour and do some localised blending in, that colour is after all part of the car’s history. Am I envious ? Oh yes 👍.

Rose = Poppy : The red poppy came to symbolize the blood shed during battle following the publication of the wartime poem “In Flanders Fields.”
"In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,"
Don't believe I've ever enjoyed watching a guy cleaning out a car as much..........again, great score!
I'm so ridiculously excited!
Like opening the BIG present at Xmas!!
Unwrapping her true beauty with every drop!
