I love it when the page moves everywhere because i do the same thing. I love your videos they helped me when making my manga. I wouldn't have done it without you.
I have bought one of your Mastering Manga books, and I want to thank you so very much. My drawings look so much better. And a lot of people tease me a lot for watching and drawing Anime, but at the end of the first Manga books, you say "Mark Crilley says you will." That made me jump back into anime again. Thank you, thank you! Keep up the good work, can't wait for the rest of the books to come in.
I think it is fine that you turn the paper. It's very honest of you. Most other anime artists are like : "Oh I am so awesome cause' I can do this without doing this and that!" It really is fine you turn the paper. :D
Thank you for all your videos! Everytime! If I'm struggling to draw something, I'll search it and find your name. You're my favorite online tutor because... The way you explain things isn't boring unlike the other tutors out there. :)
I have the same pen I was doing this project in science class and like always I never bring a pencil so I ask my teacher for one and he gave me a pen so I forgot to give it back to him and yeah so that's how I got my pen 😊
Mark, I've been wanting to draw manga and anime for months now and with your videos they've made my dream come true and all my friends just love them. Ty!!!!!
+Brooke Shannon I know, it's really a struggle. Especially when you're almost done coloring but then your hand smudges it and ruins hours worth of drawing and coloring :'(
+Amber Darkgem I know! I'm lefty and once I'm like 90000 years of getting perfect shape in hair, and ready to color, THEN SMUDGE AND STUFF it's like...my profile pic is the only manga I never smudged
+TheStander VEVO I feel your pain. Every time it happens, I froze in frustration and just back away from the table and stop on the drawing for weeks, sometimes months. I'll only finish it when I've got nothing to do
You never cease to amaze me Mark! I'm 54. I dabble a little. You're a true artist and an inspiration to all. You're a very kind person to take the time to show everyone how to draw. By the way, your videos can never be too long! Wish they were longer without time lapse. Thank-you!
I like that you detached the page it shows people how you actually draw and if they are trying to use all of your techniques this shows them one more and actually how you do it instead of just talking about it. As with every other video I have watched, it was amazing and I learned something new. Thanks for continually making videos I love them :)
I begin to draw in high school i draw little bit stick people that was a fail. so i went to art class i got 2 friends teach me how to draw anime/manga i still drawing this very day some times. mark is great artist i saw his book in school too.
I think it was really helpful seeing you spin the paper around. It is always reassuring when I see a professional artist do things like that as it shows that it is OK for me to do it.
Hey Mark. Do you use for that drawing Bristol smooth, too? I`m looking for good paper to use marker on it. Problem, I`m living in Switzerland and here is the choice pretty scare... I`m watching your videos for years and learned so much. PS: What you`ve got for breakfast? Laughting my a.. off. ^.^
watch vizmedia's videos where mangakas sketch with a pretty thick pen only and you'll see some of them turn the page too :D and those 2min sketches look amazing
You're one of the few artists I watch on RUclips (besides oil painters and such) who doesn't turn the paper all up and down and around. It is nice to have the drawing right side up the whole time, but not necessary, especially if it impedes you from showing us what you really want to show us or from working comfortably.
if anybody wonders why hes not using a real hair color. ITS ANIME! animes always have... weird colors for hair. ex.: fairy tail, natsu has pink hair, black butler, mey-rin has magenta hair, rosario+vampire, moca has pink hair! how come all of these are in the pink section... whatever, anyways, if youre an otaku like me, youll understand!
I like that you detached the page it shows us more on how to stay within the pivot of our wrists. Great job on all these videos i absolutely love them and apply them when i draw. It really helps!
Thanks for all of your tutorials and mastering manga! I have learned so much from you and I always have a reference if I am unsure on how to draw a certain pose, or how to shade in the hair - you are probably one of my heros. I am only a teenager and I definetly look up to you and your work.
I like that you flip the page give us a more honest view and a chance to observe and try this out for our self. iv ordered your mastering manga book! cant wait to read it and try out the challenges in it. Thanks mr Crilley!
no thank you Mr Crilley you made me pick up my pencils and draw again your a huge inspiration and i enjoy watching all your vids yes even old man time lapse i find cool haha. you will have my full and Continued support.
I love your honesty..and your jokes! You give lots of good info in your videos. I always wonder how artists keep their hand so steady when drawing and inking arcs (like strands of hair). The mention about the pivot point of your wrist is very helpful. Thank you for posting these.
This helped a lot as I'm always skeptical to colour my drawings but after watching this I dug out my ink pens that are collecting dust and decided to use them. So thank you for the courage to start using colour.
You are ALWAYS thanking us, your subscribers for watching your videos( buying your writing). The truth is, WE ARE ALL THANKING YOU SO MUCH!!!!! :D Thanks Mr. Crilley
Personally I absolutely love to see you turning the paper and such in your videos. Doing so is a popular technique for many artists, and is especially useful for those of us genuinely interested in learning to draw/color/etc. Seeing how you approach different situations, like hair, is helpful to us. :)
I'd just like to say that you've been a HUGE inspiration for my friend and I. I wish luck and happiness toward you and your family (times are starting to get rough...). And I'd like to thank you for making your videos that teach tons of people.
Thank you, Mark! Everybody tells me that I hold my pencil strangely, but It's the same way you hold yours! They ask me why I spin my paper to draw and I tell them that it's because I have to follow the natural motions of my hand. They scoff. You have given me so much confidence to keep learning how to draw. I know now that there is someone out there not all that different from me.
Hi Mr. Crilley, I love your videos, they are the most expanded and in-depth of a variety. 50 min. videos? I would watch 3-5 hour videos to help me with my weak spots such as backgrounds, importance with perspective (with multiple people), how to add those "effects" I always see in the background of excited or shocked characters in manga, or even where it's best to get character styles, and etc. Changing the angle of the paper helped me a lot. I do it as well. I now know that those basic hair lines DO really turn out to look professional in the end with time and careful strokes. Thank you. I plan to create a Manga and Anime, but I have to start making characters the story etc. Thank you for your tutorials. It gives all of us hope.
Thank you soooooo much for this video!!!! I've been drawing manga style for about a year and a half and I can say there has been a BIG improvement from my first drawings but I still have a lot to learn and by watching this I learned a whole lot of new stuff and I can't wait to get home and start drawing and try it all out :)
I actually love your long videos. I always have them on youtube TV while I'm doing other things. I like your shorter videos for when I'm just trying to get quick tips.
I've been watching your videos for years Mark, and I am very serious about drawing. I like the idea of turning the paper, it makes it easier to imitate and learn. An idea of Technic AND Example is a nice mix. Keep up the fun Crilley ^ ^
I was happy to see you move the paper around like you did. I thought I was weird because I needed to move the paper around to draw certain lines. Thank you
Sakura Gelly Roll pens can be a somewhat decent substitute for the gouache if you're doing smaller highlights. Doesn't always come out as bright though.
i got to say, im reading your brody's ghost story and i'm really loving it! and your videos are really helpfull. thanks for explaining step by step and for clear videos!!!!!!
Hey just wanted to say your videos are FANTASTIC!!!!! I love them!!! I was at my library today and I found your books there they are AWESOME!!!! Thanks so much for making these awesome videos and books!!!!!
I love how you showed that you actually do turn the page because im always wondering "How does he do this without turning the page?!?" I found it to be more honest and a better understanding of how we could line the work.
I've never colored in hair like that before. I always drew over my manga style hair on characters with a line marker and simply colored it in. The next manga style character I draw I'll definitely color and ink this way and see how I do with it. Your a very talented artist and my grandmom bought me your How to Draw Anime and Manga book and it's helped me so much. I usually loathe every anime/manga character (fanart or my own guys) and now I'm starting to like my pics :)
I've been watching your videos for years now and I was pretty excited to see you turn the paper for the first time. In my opinion, I think you should continue to do that because I would like to know how you honestly illistrate most of your work instead of fighting against the pivot of your wrist. It would be interesting and would probably give us more possibilities to learn something about drawing. Oh, and NEVER FORGET THE BLUSHIES!
Hi Mark, this video really helped me so thank you so much and I have a question, instead of the white Gouache could you just use white acrylic paint? thanks
I really love it when you turn the paper around, because, however weird this sounds, it makes you seem more human and makes it easier to feel that this is something I could accomplish too :D
see crilley, this is why you're my favorite artist on RUclips. I get to learn about art and I'm entertained at the same time! also could you show us all your art supplies and say where you got the, from?
I just came back from the art store and when I was there I was really unsure of what pen to get, but I just grabbed the Pigma Micron and now I'm glad I did.
I think using the locked pages works perfect for the initial lines/sketching but I do like seeing the inking process with the turning pages. I would suggest maybe a mix of both. Thanks again for another awesome video. I have been hoping you would get into using the markers. I am working on learning how to use them myself.
The blushies are cute. My manga drawing method for the hair is shaggy/spiky hair for all characters (but put up differently like shaggy flat hair, shaggy pigtails, shaggy bob, etc.). Some times I go in for smooth hair with not spikes or shags.
Mark you do whatever you need to your fans don't mind at least I don't I always find your videos helpful and I just got your mastering manga book and that has been a lot of help, thanks!
This is the first of your videos I've watched and it convinced me to subscribe your channel. It helped me a lot with colouring and shading hair. And I think its good to sometimes show, how you really work (like spinning the paper and so on). I also do that because its natural. Oh and your work is really beautiful! I like the style.
He also explains it's not important to choose the exact same paper as he does. He prefers to use sturdy/thick paper (especially when using water paint), but the texture must not interfere with the precision he has in mind.
Thank you so much for showing your viewers how to "mix media" in a way that it wont look bad.. :3 I absolutely LOVE your videos, I have learned so many methods from you! So, now i know how to shade hair with markers!!!
At the beginning of the video when you said where the light source was coming from, I thought, "But what about the eyes?" Then I thought, "Maybe I'm wrong, and don't know anything about highlights..." When you realized your mistake, I was actually glad. This showed me that maybe I am starting to grasp the concept of highlighting and shading. I always like seeing someone accomplished in something making a mistake every once in a while. Especially when I catch the mistake. It lets me know that I'm learning, and that person that is really good at what they do, can make a mistake, too.
I was really glad when Mark turned the paper around. and I was like "And I thought I was the only one".
Lol I prefer drawing with the paper angled quite a bit
+Luke The Butthole "I know I'm not the only one," I'm sorry, I had to xD
Sumtingwong you though it was cheating? Nope it's just basics
I was waiting for so long time. I was searching for 15 years... and then I finaly found it... a video where Mark Crilley makes a mistake....
ha lol
Łowca Hejterów ur prf pic suit the comment 😂😂😂😂

Spinning the paper and other natural ways to draw shows more serious artists how it's truly done. Please show more techniques like this!

A 50 minute video is better than those useless "Time lapse" videos!
I like the spinning of the paper, that's how I ink. Also BLUSHIES!
I am glad I am not the only one guilty of turning the paper
I wish you were an art teacher at my school. Dx

Can you please tell me a name of that pen? And where did you buy it?
Uh....okay
And the transition with blushies is truly beautiful.
Mark, I've been wanting to draw manga and anime for months now and with your videos they've made my dream come true and all my friends just love them. Ty!!!!!

I love the shade of blue... What is the name of that blue pencil color?
love your drawings!

I have over 20 art books and your two Mastering Manga books are my favorites out of all of them!
Detaching the page is very honest.....I prefer it. The drawing is super cute; is it possible to show how you drew it? Thanks again
Hey Mark.

Mark, I just wanted to thank you for all the time and effort you put in to these videos for our enjoyment for our own reasons!

And Asuna has a bright orange kind of color.... acually its kind of natrual to anime but oh well....(sword arts online) btw
I understand the colours of anime hairs tho. I have been watching anime for years.
Wendy has violet hairs tho{ maybe it's blue or whatever}, Fairy tail, and fred has green hairs. Oh wait, i hope the spelling of fred is not mistaken.
This souds creappy but I really enjoy your voice
I like that you detached the page it shows us more on how to stay within the pivot of our wrists. Great job on all these videos i absolutely love them and apply them when i draw. It really helps!
I love how mark constantly says that he is bad at things like markers and inking yet he always finishes with something absolutely amazing

Hahahahahaha
Mark Crilley is your SENPAI!! O well.. hi :)
i do have 50 minutes
I really like that you detached the paper, it really showed a more realistic perspective and is a much better way of showing us how to do it properly.
I love how you do this all by hand. You're an amazing artist and I am so inspired by you, Mark! Thanks so much!
Thank you so much Daniel :)
no thank you Mr Crilley you made me pick up my pencils and draw again your a huge inspiration and i enjoy watching all your vids yes even old man time lapse i find cool haha. you will have my full and Continued support.
It's great to see you turn the picture and move it, as we get more of an idea of the actual process.
I love the soft coloring!
I love your honesty..and your jokes! You give lots of good info in your videos. I always wonder how artists keep their hand so steady when drawing and inking arcs (like strands of hair). The mention about the pivot point of your wrist is very helpful. Thank you for posting these.
I honestly like the way you ink. It adds a few techniques for other artists to use.
I'm a big fan! I love your sketches and hope to be an artist as an adult. Your videos inspire me a lot . Thanks!
I like the detaching of the paper, I can see how your wrist moves and find it easier to follow
Crilley
very helpful , thank you :) like the honesty of detaching the page , makes me feel a little better
Personally I absolutely love to see you turning the paper and such in your videos. Doing so is a popular technique for many artists, and is especially useful for those of us genuinely interested in learning to draw/color/etc. Seeing how you approach different situations, like hair, is helpful to us. :)
The color ia amazing. Great choice. The blue looks great for that character.
Yes I loved seeing you spin the paper... That is what I always do too, so it's nice to know I'm not the only one.
Wow...your talent is awesome! This is the best tutorial ever made!!
As for turning the page around,
do whatever makes your artwork easy and efficient for you!
I also used to tape down a plastic ruler for the base line because you only really need one line.
I actually love your long videos. I always have them on youtube TV while I'm doing other things. I like your shorter videos for when I'm just trying to get quick tips.
Yes I like when you turn the page around because I do it as well thank you for all you do to teach us!!!!
Thank you
I like when you turn the picture. It does let us see how you really work and emphasizes moving the page to follow your pivots. It does help! ;)
I watched this around 2 years ago for the first time. I still color my hair like this when I draw. #InspiredByMark
#ForeverAndAlways
Hey just wanted to say your videos are FANTASTIC!!!!! I love them!!! I was at my library today and I found your books there they are AWESOME!!!! Thanks so much for making these awesome videos and books!!!!!
I was trying too figure out how to correctly do the color shading and stuff for the hair in clothes now I am understanding it a lot more.
Man, you've totally fixed some of my problems with this video. Thank you. :)
Also, moving the paper is wonderful, really helps.
I like the idea that you are turning the page ^^. I also love the blushies animation thing lol
I'm glad to see more honest reflection of how you would really ink something.
I love how you showed that you actually do turn the page because im always wondering "How does he do this without turning the page?!?" I found it to be more honest and a better understanding of how we could line the work.
I bought one of your books called Mastering Manga, and i love it! i can't stop looking at it, i treasure it like the bible XD
When you are done with your drawings what do you do with them?
Very entertaining and helpful tutorial! Im looking forward to see more from you, you rock!
You fool!
You never stop learning and less if its with Mark!
He teached lots of stuff to everyone ;w; He's amazing
Hi Mark, this video really helped me so thank you so much and I have a question, instead of the white Gouache could you just use white acrylic paint? thanks
Never met anyone who speaks properly and draws anime. You're a walking living legend
Thanks so much! And yes, do turn the paper when needed.
I really love it when you turn the paper around, because, however weird this sounds, it makes you seem more human and makes it easier to feel that this is something I could accomplish too :D
What if your don't have a local art store? I buy all my supplies at either wal-mart or online. I go to some art stores, but they are very far away.
Try Dick Blick on the internet if you are in the USA. Their prices are very fair and so is the postage.
see crilley, this is why you're my favorite artist on RUclips. I get to learn about art and I'm entertained at the same time! also could you show us all your art supplies and say where you got the, from?
I just came back from the art store and when I was there I was really unsure of what pen to get, but I just grabbed the Pigma Micron and now I'm glad I did.
Can you please do shading with just coloured pencils?
I think using the locked pages works perfect for the initial lines/sketching but I do like seeing the inking process with the turning pages. I would suggest maybe a mix of both.
Thanks again for another awesome video. I have been hoping you would get into using the markers. I am working on learning how to use them myself.
Amazing video! I love how in depth it was!!!!! It was so helpful, I don't even have marker but it was still helpful!

Thank you so much. I really need to improve my coloring techniques, and your video is so helpful.
Very helpful video! I never considered using whitewash to highlight the hair! :) thanks for sharing!
I absolutely LOVE your videos, I have learned so many methods from you!
