- This video provides some highlights of the career and personal life of Alan Hale, Jr., best known for his role as the Skipper in Gilligan's Island. Mr. Hale started his career at the age of 10 and appeared in more than 200 movies & TV series.
It really is true....not one negative word has ever been said about the man. I remember the day he passed away, I was working at a radio station when the news came over the wire. The entire staff was so sad that I don't recall anyone talking to each other the rest of the afternoon. It was a large piece of our childhood that left us that day.
My dad was a golfing pal of Hale's and I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times. Wow, what a warm and wonderful man he was. Thank you for this tribute!
Title of that movie is " Up.Periscope".
Must have been wonderful.
@@johnbockelie3899 Read the book first, then saw the movie. Both were excellent. ✌
I met him once when friends took me to his restaurant for dinner. He treated all of us as if we had been friends for life. A very nice man.
I was a kid watching his various roles as an actor, especially Gilligan's Island in the 1960's. I was a teenager when my dad, brother, and I went to see him at the Lobster Barrel in the early 1970's. I was very much impressed at how friendly and lovable he was to us as his restaurant guests. Rest in peace wonderful Alan Hale Jr. You were truly a beautiful human being.
As well as a fine actor
Alan Hale Jr. was the first celebrity I ever met back in 1988 in Houston. His hands just swallowed my hands when I shook his. He was full of love and it showed. I hope to see him in Heaven one day. RIP sir.
Skipper was the Father figure I always wanted as my Dad when I was growing up, just loved this guy..
RJ Wood Me too!
Absolutely. My father was seriously terrible!
Alan Hale was a wonderful man and his role as the Skipper was so lovable. Touching tribute.
What a warm and bubbly personality.
I love the sensitivity that went into this tribute.
It really is authentic and nostalgic.
Alan Hale and Alan Hale Jr. were both great and had that big, happy smile. You could just tell they were down to earth and nice folks without a clip on their shoulder.
A lovely and sensitive tribute. The background musical is soothing and adds to the mood. Bravo!!!!!!!!
It most certainly is 😀
What a great man and fine actor. He is greatly missed.
I ALWAYS HEARD HE WAS A VERY SWEET MAN, AND HE ABSOLUTELY ENJOYED BEING CALLED THE SKIPPER. INSTEAD OF BEING MAD AT BEING TYPECAST, HE EMBRACED THE SKIPPER, AND CONTINUED TO WEAR THE SKIPPER HAT IN HIS PERSONAL LIFE OCCASIONALLY.
Well said and well put ! What an uplifting soul he was with that kind manner and sweet smile !
Fuck off with the Caps Lock David, you silly old fool.
The skipper was a beautiful man, and this video was a beautiful tribute!
I agree.
An absolute icon he looked and sounded like a great man
@@travels129 I agree.
Class act he was.hats off
I read that he used to travel to children's hospitals and visit the kids as the Skipper on his own dime. Too bad more actors couldn't do the same.
Isn't that the truth
I used to see him washing off the sidewalk in front of his restaurant quite often on my way to work...stopped and said hello once..what a friendly fellow...greatly missed.
Alan Hale Jr. looked a lot like his father, Alan Hale Sr.(also a great actor). In fact, I once saw my parents watching a black and white movie called, "Action in the North Atlantic," and I thought I saw Alan Hale Jr. in it because the guy looked a lot like the Skipper, he was even wearing a hat just like the Skipper's. I asked my parents, "Isn't that the guy who played Skipper on Gilligan's Island?" and my mom said, "No. That's actually his father." I was amazed. The resemblance was remarkable!
....i wonder if his tombstone says, "GILLIGAAAAAAAAAAAN!" ?........
It made me cry. Who else?😭😭
Same here!
Me too
me too
That was the point of the poster!
Made me cry as well
i dont think they could have found a man anywhere in this world to play the role of skipper jonas grumby better than Alan hale he was ment to be the skipper what a very jolly and friendly man mr.hale was it was like he was born to be the skipper of the s.s.minnow.may he rest in peace.
Hunter deja, that used to be a great trivia question. Very few people knew his name on GI.
That's what everybody says not knowing the possibilities. Though an ideal choice considering he played a similar character on The Andy Griffith Show. Bob Denver also appeared on an episode with the Darlings.
What a beautiful tribute to Alan Hale, Jr. He was my favorite character in Gilligan's Island. He did have a lovable quality about him that made you want to know him. His smiling face makes you feel good and he was also very funny!
I always thought Alan Hale had a lovely smile and laugh. That's what so warmed me to him.
I recall the day Ala Hale Jr passed away. It was an emotional day for me.
What fabulous in-depth details. I had no idea Alan Hale had such an impressivecareer. GREAT JOB THIS IS A FOR KEEPS VIDEO---LOVED IT -SO IMPRESSED
I remember him primarily as Casey Jones in that series. I was a little too "sophisticated" at age 15 to pay much attention to Gilligan's Island, but Casey Jones and the Cannonball Express was right down my alley when I was 9.
He had quite an extensive career. I had no idea. Great tribute.
Indeed.
He was actually in 5 series. His last one involved him and Bob Denver running a diner. Can't remember the name of the show. It was funny.
Gilligan drove acool hot rod in that show.
The show was called "The Good Guys" and starred Bob Denver and Herb Edelman.
love the picture of him and Mary Ann at the end made me cry, like the Jonny Cash video years ago
Lovely tribute. Thanks for showing so much of Alan Hale’s career.
He played a cook named Gilligan in Batman (an episode with Vincent Price as Egghead).
Oooh! I remember that one!!
Imagine if Gilligan were called "Joker" :P
@Berry Harbour but he appeared in batman for a episode his name in the episode was gilligan
Lots of humanity with this man.
Awe, the Skipper was my favorite. Thanks for sharing all these lovely pictures and information on Alan Hale. I love the fact his nickname was buddy.
Mary Ann was my favorite.
LOL
Why, Hello there Jeff Bridges!
Thank you Sherry for this very moving tribute. It brought loving, sad tears to my eyes. Alan Hale was a GREAT man!
Got to see him in person at a travel show in L.A. in the late 1960s. He was such a gentleman. A family member accidentally bumped into him. He tipped his skipper hat and said to her, "Pardon me ma'am."
Very nice... It's true, never read or heard a single bad word about this man. Very rare for a born and bread Hollywood type.
That's BRED, NOT BREAD.
RIP Alan Hale, Jr. There aren't enough fine men like you in this crazy world.
He and his father were cornerstones of the golden age of the entertainment industry. He new everybody in the business, and he was respected by all. When you think of the ledgindary stars of Hollywood, like Errol Flynn and many others, remember that they considered him a family friend. He had an amazing life. Most importantly, he was a nice guy.
Hollywood hero. I miss him.
I grew up with Skipper on Gillian's Island, love it all. I miss him till this day. I agree, there will never be another Skipper.
This had me crying. Love you SKIPPER
This is a very nice tribute, toughing and very well done. Brings a tear to the eye.
Gregg mine as well
Beautiful video. It brought tears to my eyes. I miss this actor so much.
I saw him on an Andy Griffith episode where he was after Barney's girl friend Thelma Lou. Every time he would encounter Barney, he'd call him " little buddy" which would anger Barney.
I've been watching Gilligan's Island season one and two lately...love that show
Bob Silver, I love them too. There are actually three seasons.
He had a great career and I have also heard over and over again what a nice gentleman Mr Hale was. I sure miss him.
Great job! Very nicely done. Another western movie Alan was in was The Gunfghter in 1950. He really did have an incredible career, always working which is the sign of a good actor.
what a great great gentleman
Very well done...music was just right for this presentation. Thank you for a great posting.
This was wonderful. I also enjoyed this new musical version of Sounds of Silence. RIP Alan Hale, Jr.
Let's not forget about the countless tv appearances on shows like "Alf" or "Family Fued"...or his semi regular character on " The Good Guys"around 1970, where he got to pal around with his Little Buddy Bob Denver once again .
Thanks for the tribute of Alan Hale. Could not have picked a finer person to honor, and a nice man to boot.
What a wonderful tribute! I learned a lot about Alan I didn't know. It was beautiful.
Thank you for this lovely tribute. Watching tonight with my husband Chris Hale.
myrottndog626, thanks for viewing. Very glad you and Chris were able to view this video as a lot of love went into it. Hope all is well with Lana. Please tell Chris hi from me.
You mean you married Alan Hale Jr's son?
I hope you don't mind a question! Did he ever explode on set? It always seemed he was about to get angry at Gilligan, even when something bad wasn't going on during the scene. Like, he would be very polite, but just on the verge of about to burst open with anger. Was that just his character or what? I always wondered! Grew up watching Gilligan's island, age 8+ I think!
I met this wonderful man at the San Jose airport, in California.
At the time (1983 - 1985 ), I was a car rental agent at Hertz.
He was standing in line, waiting to rent a car from Avis.
I asked him why not Hertz ? He said, "Because Avis, tries harder."
I wish I could have met him
thanks for the great video I have always admired Alan hale loved him as the skipper of the s.s.minnow.
I wonder if he was Irish? I'm a first generation fan of this show. I remember how sad I was when I learned the show was cancelled.
Gilligan's Island was the best show of the 1960's and no better actor to play the Skipper than Alan Hale.
People forget he grew up in Hollywood. His father play Little John in three different Robin Hoods decades apart each time. He knew what to expected . He was a great actor. so was his father. You don't stay in the business that long if you aren't talented . He was and so was his father.
Nice photos and well put together. Alan Hale was certainly a talented and honorable man.
Awe, what can I say but this is a lovely tribute. The background music added nicely to the mood. Made me cry to think Alan Hale is gone from this world and I will never meet him. However, he is in a better place. RIP dear Skipper.
RIP, and God bless you.
Thanks for sharing these cool pictures.
Growing up, my two brothers and I used to watch reruns of Gilligan's Island all the time. We were each given autograph books, and one day we were surprised when our dad came home and gave each of us our autograph books back with autographs from Alan Hale, who was visiting our city. Sadly, those autograph books are long lost, but we were excited to get them at the time.
thank you, sherry. beautiful.
He seemed like family. I was on my way to work (heavy construction) in the early morning when I heard of his death. Later that morning was our weekly safety meeting. Before the meeting was concluded I had the men take off their hard hats and we placed them over our hearts and had a moment of silence. RIP Skipper.
Remember he reprised his role as Skipper on a 1989 episode of Alf along with Bob Denver Gilligan sadly it would be the last time we'd ever see them together on screen!! He also appeared in a 1987 episode of Growing Pains titled: This Is Your Life. He was Ben's cab driver. Plus he appeared on an episode of The New Gidget also in 1987!
+Marty Mcfly ...Cheers Marty, we could use more people like the Skipper these days.
At 3:41 ... Man Behind the Gun (1953) Co Staring Bud Bundy... lol
I'm a big fan of the Andy Griffith show. My favorite episode was The Farmer Takes a Wife, that co-starred Alan Hale. The scenes with Barney are priceless. Nice job on the video.
awesome video ! perfect song for this video !
That was beautiful! A great man!!
Seldom see a photo of him without a big smile
He Had To Hitchhike from Utah to Cali for the Skipper audition ? !
Was he going through a Financial Dry Patch at that time . . . ???
It could have been that there wasn't a bus or plane making the trip soon enough and he wanted to strike while the iron was hot. If he got there a day later somebody else could have gotten the role.
Howdy partner. Miss the humor and glamour of the good ole days when actors were great.
Thanks for this sensitive tribute. I did not know a lot of this information on Alan Hale. Truly one of our more memorable actors. I like the fact he was such a nice individual in real life.
If you notice the Skipper and Gilligan parodied Laurel and Hardy while Ginger Grant parodied Marilyn Monroe and Mary Ann Summers parodied Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz.
I never really thought about that. I always knew that Tina Louise modeled her character after Marilyn Monroe and I thought Dawn Wells played the sweet girl next door perfectly. But I never thought about the Laurel and Hardy connection. Very good observation.
@@danielschwartz1228 Watch how the Skipper will stare at the camera the way Oliver Hardy did.
@@dallasbrubaker6054 I figured that, since his dad, Alan Hale Sr was in many Laurel and Hardy movies.
@@BrotherDerrick3X I never knew that
Beautiful tribute. A wonderful man Alan Hale jr. He never refused to give an autograph to a fan always wore a smile along with his Skipper hat in public He was a very grateful man and was always proud to answer to the name skipper. My favorite character on Gilligan's Island. He is sorely missed. R.I.P. Skipper and Trinket. BTW...I love Alan, but he wasn't the only actor to star in 2 series at the same time. The star of Sherwood's other TV series, Robert Reed was a regular on Mannix as LT Adam Tobias while doing the Brady Bunch...
I think Pamela Anderson was doing Baywatch and Home Improvement at the same time
This was a well thought out video and very moving. What a great man Alan Hale Jr. was
Everyone loved the Skipper!
Alan hale had a nice smile; you got to love him.
At 7:07, the film's title was not "U.S. Periscope", but "Up Periscope", not that it makes the slightest bit of difference to such a successful life, especially in terms of having been a good man.
Beautiful video ! Yes, Alan Hale had an impressive acting career, but he will always be The Skipper !!! BTW, such a beautiful instrumental version of The Sound of Silence ! Anyone know who did it, and where can I get a copy of it ? Thanks Again for the Vid !
This version is by the London Pops Orchestra. You can find a version on ITunes. Thanks for viewing
Thanks !!
Great tribute. I would not miss Gillian’s Island as a child. Good memories!!
I would imagine meeting Alan Hale in person would have been a memorable and exciting experience. I agree with so many of the comments made here. He was a pleasant man with great accomplishments.
This and Star Trek were my two favorite childhood television shows. One thing though, I never understood why they wanted to leave the Island. To me they lived in paradise.
I live on the gulf coast of Florida. We just got hit by a hurricane. so I walked down to the causeway and walked along the debris line where the high tide washed all manner of debris. Within an hour I found enough fishing tackle washed up that I put it all together and walked out to where the tide had surged and threw out a line. A few minutes later I had dinner. I gotta believe the professor, an infinitely smarter guy than myself, couldn't figure out how to accomplish as much.
@Tye Bear The causeway to Clearwater Beach. I do one day want to go down Sanibel way. I hear the beach combing there is unparalleled.
It would have been paradise if only they had had one more beautiful woman. 3 girl for 4 guys, not good.
Nice tribute to a deserving man. I'm glad to see some pictures of his personal life.
What a beautiful tribute! I absolutely loved, loved, loved it! Where did you find all of those rare photos? Especially of his family. He and his dad are both in my top five of favorite actors.
Hi LuvVintage. These photos were part of a collection over many years. Some of the photos came from magazines, some from Ebay and a lot of them were still shots I did after downloading a movie or TV appearance. Thanks for viewing.
Thanks for this great tribute to Alan Hale. I wish that I had had the pleasure of meeting him.
Thanks Paul Hogrin. I wish I could have met him as well.
Interesting fact -- another actor who auditioned for the role of the Skipper was none other than Carol O'Connor (who later played Archie Bunker on "All in the Family"). Imagine him as the Skipper instead!
Continue to rest in peace Mr. Hale...our beloved "Skipper".
Great presentation of this video, excellent work! Good tribute, the music went well with it.
Nice to see all his accomplishments, the music added more sadness to it, but in a good way. 😢
Thanks for sharing friend. 👍👍
Wonderful Tribute...thank you.
gilligan only lasted three years and was such a hit
Super tribute! Aloha.
His dad Alan Sr was a sidekick of Errol Flynn's in a few movies as well. Father&son were both very much liked by fellow actors, both with a ready laugh& sense of humor, both "big teddy bear" kind of guys.
Nicely done
He was an absolute sweetheart. As a kid, my parents would take me to his restaurant (Alan Hale's Lobster Barrel) and he'd personally serve me a Shirley Temple on the house. He was so charismatic and amazing.
"Up" periscope. Story of his audition for "Skipper" was pretty good (Mike Rowe version).
One thing that is widely not known about Alan Hale is, that he and his wife after the shooting of Gilligan's Island, were on a tour of the middle east. They had just boarded a plane and hijackers came on board and demanded the plane take off for a neighboring country. The hijackers immediately noticed "The Skipper" and decided to leave the plane. Later, when asked by police why they had aborted the hijacking, said " We saw the skipper and his wife aboard that plane, and didn't have the heart to hijack it after all the years that the poor guy spent on that island!
This was very nicely done.
Flipdockfans, thank you.
Looked like an interesting video but I only made it to the 1 minute mark. Can't stand videos where you have to "read" everything so you can't really look at the images. Would be a nice video if it were narrated.
my parents are baby boomers so they grew up watching this show. I was I Introduced to Gilligan's island by them, and I am sure glad they did. I own every episode of Gilligan's island I like the characters of the professor and the Skipper Jonas Grumby. I would have loved to visit can his restaurant, or book a boat cruise with his travel agency. he was a excellent actor and a wonderful man. he is missed and not forgotten.
A lovely tribute. Thank you!
nice guy
This is such beautiful music
Very nice. Thanks for sharing.
Man, the Skipper was such a douchebag to Gilligan but I heard Alan Hale Jr. was the kindest and most gentle human beings on the set.
That's what is interesting about actors, they play douchebags but they are really cool guys. Look at Biff from the Back to the Future series.
I don't think he was a Douchebag to Gilligan. Sometimes The Skipper lost his cool with Gilligan because Gilligan was so annoying and such a Screw-up, but I think the Skipper really cared about Gilligan. A Father Figure to his LIttle Buddy.
@@HoldenNY22 exactly !
@ Thank You.
Thanks for the memories. I have always been a big fan of Alan Hale, Jr. He was great in Hang Em High.
That scene of him at the forge and Clint shows up to arrest him... he perfectly telegraphed the face of a man who knew he had done the worst thing one human being could do to another, and he was to be eternally dammed for it; now that is great acting, without any dialog.
