  • More info about this video: From Libby Altwegg.
One morning after the early newscast, I wandered back into the studio and there was Alan Hale, Jr. ( the Skipper from GILLIGAN’S ISLAND) sitting all alone on the news desk. There wasn’t any production scheduled on the board, but there he was. He had his elbows on the desk so his hands were close to his mouth in a slightly cupped fashion and his mouth was forming a sort of “O” shape, clapping his hands and making notes. Try it.
Well, Rainone and I did that all the time as children so I marched right up to him without saying a word, “playing” the opening song to the GILLIGAN’S ISLAND TV show and we were instant best friends.
The Skipper was in-house to record a PSA, and in true KXAS form, the folks upstairs neglected to inform us who had to do the work.
What you see here is 6 minutes of “hurry up and wait”. Something we in television have perfected.
We still used paper scripts for the TelePrompter and production manager Jimmy Turner was scrambling trying to get the font big enough for the Skipper to read. Mr. Hale was frustrated, and yet the consummate professional.
Occasionally you’ll hear David Finfrock who is in the weather station, camera left, join in the good humor.
Headphones are helpful. And wait ‘til the end when yours truly makes her presence known.
Babs, remember that paddle I told you we kept on the Ensign before Dad bought a motor? The Skipper reminds me so much of Randall at the club. 🥰
Chuck Johnson, I could KISS YOU! This video is priceless. Dick Shanklin found it yesterday and sent it to me.
    Absolutely made my day.
    Enjoy some “inside baseball” everyone.

Very sweet and down to earth. My Grandparents took me on the greatest vacation of my life when I was 14. Mr. Hale had a restaurant in the Burbank, Studio City area called the Lobster Barrel. Nothing fancy but very good seafood. He was in the restaurant that evening and was so kind to sit with us and visit. My Grandfather was a big fan of his father Alan Sr. He loved talking about his Pop. His face lit with color and glowing admiration for him. He sat with us the entire dinner talking with my Grandpa about his father. I was honored to be called little buddy by him and he popped me on top of my head with his famous hat. I time I will treasure forever.
