On Season 1's "The Big Gold Strike" episode the other castaways messed up that rescue - Gilligan was innocent that time. The other 6 castaways were each secretly (with the exception of the Howells who probably knew what each of them were doing) trying to smuggle a bag of gold among their personal effects onto the the life raft; their combined weight along with the gold caused the raft to sink faster than the Titanic just moments after they cast off from the island.
The cast was fully expecting a 4th season to follow and CBS had renewed the show too. But the President of CBS William Paley's wife demanded that he keep Gunsmoke on (which was about to be canceled) and in order to do so Gilligan's Island had to be canceled.
