I share your vision but haven’t checked into zoning restrictions in my state (KY), city, and county yet. Zoning restrictions are one of the biggest hurdles and hindrances to affordable housing, this needs to be changed so that US citizens can have a greater chance at achieving the American dream without having to be tethered to the rat race and barely making ends meet trying to afford a 30yr mortgage on a way too expensive house. SHED TO HOUSE is definitely the way to go. If zoning laws don’t get in the way however if they do, moving may be necessary to achieve your dreams

I've received a lot of inspiration from you. I purchased 5+ acres last year and really just thought to buy a manufactured home from clayton homes and just pay a mortgage every month for 30 years. But I don't want that life. I want to spend time with my son (1 yr old) and save money for things that matter. So yesterday I bought a 16x52 building and will be converting it into our home one step at a time. Thank you for sharing your journey.

So this was super common when my grandmother was young to essentially get prefabs for cheap and drop them into a plot of land and call it. We are heavily considering getting 20-30 acres to raise small amounts of livestock and 10-15 acres for us and my parents and maybe a guest house and dropping a garage shed. We have been mapping out the layout for years along with a self sufficient power grid based upon solar and wind energy with battery located in the garage with two backup gens. Living with your family should be considered a norm along with self sufficiency.

Hi so did y’all get the shed building with the dormer windows or you had a barn style with lofts?
Ours is the barn style roof, so no dormers. We needed the extra space for our kids lofts.
But those dormers are AWESOME!!!!

So far, it’s going great! The kids really spend most time outside playing and building and creating. But they are getting older. So we are considering our next steps.

Just ordered one, you’re looking at about 30k with the cheaper siding.
So what makes this is a more economical option as some suggest? I took a single 16x32 foot shed and priced out everything for a moderately liberal off grid style living, wifi and tv, a/c, but no running water and using space heaters, its over 200k! I dont believe theres any reasonable method of financing that either and would defeat the purpose.

@BetterTogetherLife basic stuff like a 16cu ft fridge, solar power, water collection, heating said water, air and heat for the home itself, the foundation, flooring, everything. To be fair the biggest part of that was the land purchase, but in a desirable place, the second largest part was solar, because I do not understand enough about solar systems to package my own setup

Hmmm, solar power is not basic. And you can’t really consider appliances into your budget when comparing a tiny house vs a traditional home. Because it’s the same exact cost no matter what. So they equal each other out.

What state do you live in that has favorable zoning laws that allow for building a shed to house, Recently, I was looking at the page of a RUclipsr in Tennessee that bought some land, ordered a shed to house built by the Amish, had it set in and was ready to build out the interior. They did make inquiries with the state and city, Somehow, the state law prohibiting this was buried in the website and they didn’t see it. The state said they can’t bring in a shed/house partially constructed. It has to be built on site, the state said they could deconstruct it and build it back, they intend to fight it, haven’t heard the outcome yet.
