Waaaaaay back in 1996 my husband and I bought a little 10x16 shed kit to convert to a cabin. We had bought 5 acres recreation property a few years before, it had no electricity, and a steep sketch road in. The shed kit was perfect because all the boards were pre cut, was easier to bring in and just had to be assembled. We added windows, a strong foundation base with a 4’ front deck and got it all up in about 3 weeks. That winter our cabin property got a record snow fall, and turns out… the shed kit roof wasn’t Streep or strong enough. Snow flattened the roof and spread the walls. So the following summer we pulled in the walls, put a steeper roof on and covered the 10x4 front deck area. It was a disaster that turned into a blessing, cause the steeper roof meant we could add a loft. 27 years later a lot has change, and been added on and we’ve developed more building skills and experience along the way, and we’ve been able to bring our kids along on the journey. Which is priceless of course. All that to say, 27 years ago people though we were preeettyy weird for turning a shed into a cabin. Now we’re Cool! 😆. They are really starting to make these "sheds" look more and more like actual tiny homes. I mean for crying out loud, a lot these that I'm seeing actually have a second story with windows at the top and even a porch. What normal shed looks like that? It's almost as if the manufacturers are doing this knowing that more people will try to buy them up for the intended purposes of converting them into actual livable homes while still trying to hide behind the "shed" label. It's such a sly idea. But it works.
That's because a lot of them aren't intended to be used as sheds. You're basically buying a dried in house shell. They can't call them that for liability reasons. In this case, the framing actually looks pretty well done with double thickness wall headers and properly sized and supported roof trusses.
It gets around local property laws? Because in a normal residential neighborhood you can’t put another house behind an already small sectioned piece of land for a house and garage. They wouldn’t allow it. But if it’s a “shed”…
Build on a concrete slab. You will not have to be concerned about rodents or floor rot over the years. A better insulation factor. The few extra dollars will certainly be worth it. Plus new home buyers will have greater confidence in buying that home. Because not many people like the idea of getting up underneath trying to locate floor rot when they go to buy a home. Then there is also the idea of the home being built better on a solid foundation. Where the home can withstand high and strong wind resistance. Because it is bolted to the concrete foundation. Concrete today has become much more affordable because of pump trucks and other innovative solutions. If you have a lot of time on your hands you can always rent a mixer and do it yourself. That said, I will probably build most of the other buildings on my homestead, but am glad to stay in my pre-built cabin.
Only downside is you're going to have to build the bathroom upstairs, because there is not enough room for one downstairs unless you really want to cut into your living room space.

We found the RUclips expert
Hi, how did you tour the buildings? I have gone on about 10 different websites for sheds / portable buildings and can't seem to find any information about how to actual see some in person (I live in California)
Did you have to email the people closest to you and ask if you could come see them or did they say on their website that you can come see them in person if you are in the (city name) area?
It’s because you live in California. Sorry. They don’t like freedom homes like this.
What state and city?
I can’t find this shed anywhere. Does anyone have a link?
Yup! You can build and design it here to find out the cost:
shedview.goupb.com/?dealer=1504
I want this for my sewing studio , so i can install a bathroom , i got a she shed 12x10 and its ok but I need more space that way my kids can fit and hang out with me , and I don’t have to run into the my house and use the bathroom, and a small refrigerator, my hubby works from home , his garage is metal with an office, no electrical , no bathroom .
One of these would be perfect for a man whos fixing to get divorced after building our dream home less than 2 years ago. Hell i could pay cash for one of these and buy a small piece of land and never worry about a mortgage again.
Could put a built in dog kennel under the stairs. Or just storage accessible by a cabinet.
I wish I could find this shed
If you are in the southern states you can design it HERE:
And it will be built WAY BETTER than Home Depot.
if i own an abandoned farm, could i hypothetically plop it down and make this a permanent residence?
Totally depends on your county laws
power ? AC ? asking for my state of florida bc
You will want those, yes.
Thank you so much ❤❤❤❤
I only found these being made by a company in the midwest for about $18-25k, otherwise id buy one tomorrow
I found one that’s 30k just for the same shell😭😭😭
Doing your own framing on a slab would save you big bucks.
Absolutely!!!
I used to do construction and after calculating material costs, I was glad to pay UPB to build my cabin. They buy material in bulk and can get it way cheaper than an individual. It's very solid and looks great and only took about 3 weeks from ordering to delivery.
That said, I will probably build most of the other buildings on my homestead, but am glad to stay in my pre-built cabin.
Can you get the 2 story sheds in California?
I doubt it. California has some harsh restrictions.
Empty spot by the stairs a cubbard for can goods etc.
Yes and with add ons.
My wife and I live in New England. Do you suggest any builders here
I’m not in touch with anyone in that area. But I’m sure there are reputable companies.
Only downside is you're going to have to build the bathroom upstairs, because there is not enough room for one downstairs unless you really want to cut into your living room space.
Tell me more about it.
You should do it! Build it here and find out how much it'll cost: shedview.goupb.com/?dealer=1504
I would take 2 side by side and open up each dide. Put them together and I have a good enough home for me.
Any builder recommendations for WA state?
My family DOES live in an actual Home Depot shed home, and have since 2005
Window headers are incorrect. Your not filming the actual structure.
Sorry?
I live in a studio apartment in downtown seattle. This is a mansion compared to my situation
I wouldn’t need any walk in pantry… just room for a deep freezer!!! Rather one walk in closet for clothes for both residents.
We've turned ourselves into a beautiful home. We quadruple the original investment.
Rainbow colored stairs?
Planning on this for a microschool.
oh wow cool idea
I wonder if you could insulate this with straw bale?
I would not. It’s too small, you’d have to plan for that….and this isn’t the right fit.
Can I buy a house like this and build it on a land around Las Vegas and count it as a residential address?
cheack for zoning laws i think only as a sub structure
No, unless it’s on wheels . Good luck
No i couldn't cant do upstairs but if it was one level i could definitely live in one
Does United deliver to all mainland states? We are very interested, but are in Washington. 😢
Shelby I am SO SO sorry. No, unfortunately they are only in Texas and Mississippi and some of the surrounding states. Super sorry. BUT, you should definitely join our Shed to House facebook group because I am sure there is someone in there that knows of a good company for you! facebook.com/groups/shedtohouse
What about Virginia?
Didn't yall get the house and studio from one of the Mississippi plants??
United Portable Buildings. They’re in Mississippi and Texas.
As long as I have a toilet and a sink of some kind, I could live in that
Nice!
You’re looking at about $5000 worth of materials if you have any building skills you can knock this out two days
Down south maybe this would work but up north you're gonna want 2x6 exterior walls.
Ah, an ad for United, should’ve just said that.
Well, they didn’t pay us to say it. We just think people should know about them. We really do like them better. So we did say that.
Come be beaten on the friendly sky’s
This doesn't make your business look good. Pure taste.
You can build a 24x24 post and beam timber frame skillion cottage with 3 loft rooms for that price. In about 2 weeks. It wouldn't fit down our 2 track though. And the mice and communist red squirrels would have a nice home in it.
Wait Wait Wait.. You Still have one of these at one of Your Stores in Your State/Town???? WTF? Lowes and Home Depot, STOPPED Selling these and can't even Find them on their Sites... Even the Two Story Barn Looking ones are Gone! Or 0:24 Both are No Longer Available! And Then Right before they Stopped Selling them They Doubled In Price!
Both Having to be Built On Site... Or that what I was Told before they Stopped Selling them. And I was Saving Up to do the one on the Right, the "New Day Classic Manor" but a 16x24. They stopped that one First.. Then the Barn One... And You Found one just a Few Days ago??? This video being two days old of me watching and posting this... HOW? Or is this OLD Footage of these? Because to have a Company come build one that is a Duplicate of these, they will now Cost around $30,000plus and No Longer between $16,000-$24,000... And that's just for a Closed in Frame, just like these are...
I am very sorry Raven. No unfortunatly this was back in 2019 when we toured this building. So it was Pre COVID pricing.
May I ask what state you are in? If you are in the southern states, maybe we can help you with a United Portable Building?
Feel free to email me here: bettertogetherlife@gmail.com
So, then why have it on a RUclips channel five years later?
I would live in it
The concept is cool. Video is cringe. The only thing you really said is go to a dealer. No other key information. If your script in your video isn't worth reading, its not worth shooting.
What would you have liked it to be?
I would buy 3 of them and put them side by side
I hate particle wood.
Yup
U don’t have to live there forever it’s a great idea for now save up get ahead
Wouldn't mind it for a hunting camp.
Heck yea!!
These models are gorgeous! I tried searching for these in southern California but had no luck finding them. Where are these still being sold at? :)
Yea, not sure if California would be down with this. They like to tax a lot. But the southern states of the country have them all over! You can build your own here: shedview.goupb.com/?dealer=1504
Y'all must have gotten your shed for free from United, this video screams AD. Ironic enough united is still a large company and has higher prices than local shed companies.
We work with companies we can confidently recommend bc they offer exceptional quality. I don’t know if you can oils rather us give bad recommendations 🤷♀️. But the video didn’t have to scream ad for it to be one. We can just share what we like.
if people can live in the streets, yes, you can live in a house
Prefer the 2 story.
When people have an abundance of money they say stupid stuff vs someone's livelihood depends on the success of this venture. Totally different
When people have an abundance of time, they type stupid stuff instead of thinking critically. Totally different.
@@BetterTogetherLife That just maybe true, but it's those cowards that operate so deep in the gray, too afraid of their own reflection to let others know, they are being direct or passive. Time and cowardice is a waste
I see.
This viedo is scam and click bait if theres no way to buy it
You can’t still buy it. What state are you in?
So nice
Why not make a shed to shed instead
SEND ME A CATALOG PLEASE
Thank you! Downsizing is cool!
