Remember when fishing a small creek with this technique, work the minnow against the current in a small quick jerky motion, little twitches. Work ANY areas you think might hold a trout. Examples: along a piece of timber, log, deeper holes, riffles, small waterfalls, behind rocks that have deeper eddies, bank undercuts, tuffs of grass, brush pile ups, anything you think might hold a trout, get they minnow in there & make it look alive! etc.. The trick that most people don’t do is fish the entire creek area. Some days I’ll fish a couple miles of creek, either up steam or down steam. That helps, if you have never tried this before, it takes some practice. When that minnow starts to look worn, or a trout hits it & ruins it, you have to change it & rig a new minnow. Trout can become very aggressive & take a pass at the minnow. Always try your best to keep your eye on the minnow as you fish it.
@@PeacefieldStudio That is how I fished them. I just hooked them through the lips. I think I would have a better catch rate with a treble hook out the tail end. They miss my hook a lot.
You are absolutely correct. If a trout short-strikes or nips at your presentation, there is a little surprise waiting. The treble hook. My advice is don't be too quick to set the hook. Let the trout have it a bit. When you feel that second tug or maybe the third, set the hook. As you mentioned, you can just hook the minnow through the lips with a basic hook, but many times the trout will get the minnow & not the hook. Many anglers don't want to bothered with the time it takes to rig a treble hook with minnows, but in my opinion, it's worth it, but you will have to decide for yourself, good luck.
One thing I have done I buy small 3mm beads. Various colors. And add a clevis and micro spinner blade about size of fingernail. Rig just like you do. But you have a colored bead and clevis and blade ahead of the minnow that rests on its lips. Up the line I add a small swivel. So to reduce line twist.
Thank you for your comment. My technique is one of many. I use a fly rod to fish small creeks, because of the rods reach. It allows me to get into those hard areas that most anglers would get hung up in.
Not sure what part of the country you are from, but the weather has not really been what I would call fantastic in 2024! I tend to agree with you. We’ll see what happens as the year goes on. Thanks for your comment. 👍
Interesting way to rig the minnow. Thanks.
An amazing video and unique way to fish for trout.
