Thanks for this tip. I'm going out tomorrow to fish with my son. This will be his first time fishing. We'll try out the first method. I like the idea of keeping them alive longer.
I've been using the perch rig lately with Minnows, however, I double hook the minnows through the top of their backs. This way, it stays on and is just as effective. I live two miles from the Saginaw River, which is ABUNDANT with Walleye and Perch. I've had nothing but pure success using this method. Goodluck fishermen, and thanks for the video *****
Another method we always used, particularly when jigging rivers for walleye, is to go through the mouth, out the gill, back into the belly and out the top of the back. Keeps the hook inline and in a good position for an immediate hookset with the jig. Obviously doesn't keep them very lively though.
Thanks for the tips! I'm going walleye fishing this weekend for the first time and I will be using several of these hooking tactics on my minnows. Hopefully it will be a productive day on the river
Thnx ,Ivo on excellent video and excellent advices.Nature creates the best lures.Me and my boy will go in minnow fishing these days, after that we go in sea bass fishing.Greetings from Croatia.
I know this is a older post but I have to say it give me more options. I have always used a minnow needle and a leader about 6inch or more and a treble hook. I have cought 3 or 4 fish with 1 minnow. But I have dropped my last needle and couldn't find it. Thanks for the informational video. Good luck out there.
Thundermist Lures which one of these wats is best for pike fishing. I was going through the upper lip but when a fish bits it rips the minnow off the hook.
Literally came to say this same thing hahaha after each hook I was speaking for the minnow “OUCH SHHHHHT WHAT WAS THAT?! Glad that’s over…wait…what’s he doing with that hook…NOOOO!”
I use the tail hook method, it keeps the hook from going deep and setting the hook in the gullet. The gill method works well in the faster water of the Missouri river where I live.
Great tips Ivo as always. I really enjoy your videos. I have a problem of throwing minnows off my hook when i cast especially when hooking them through the back. Any idea what i'm doing wrong and how I can fix it?
Try to not cast so hard - for example, in order to get more casting distance, use a longer rod and you will be able to gently cast but still yet gain distance. Also, perhaps you can double hook through the top of the back - good luck :)
ok cool im sure there is no problem so ill probably try it next time ill go to the lake :) i just hope they work as good as the minnows :) tnx for your advice great videos :)
Thank you I'll try the thin wire hooks any advice on fishing blown out rivers and muddy visibility for spring steelhead bait, color , etc. for the minnow rig does the t turn rig work pretty good for pier fishing
muddy visibility makes for tougher fishing, but you can use such things like a bright orange yarn fly for better visibility and the T-Turn bait rigs work great for pier fishing :)
I used live minnows years ago to catch big trout (UK) I put the hook through the tail, one wrap of the line round the back of the body, put the hook just under the dorsal, then another wrap round the front of the body, then in the gill and hook ends up pointing out the mouth. Was guaranteed to attract the best brown trouts
Great info for sure, and the timing could'nt be better. I've got the fishing itch that needs to be scratched and i have a long weekend off coming up this week. Thanks.
Hey! I enjoyed it. It was informative. And I know you used a different minnow each time..you just didn't show it on the video to make it short, right? :-)
The reply from the "Notorious Angler" below seems to describe the "Hook line and Threader" method. I just recently saw their product and was curious as to how long their minnows live. Have you seen or tried their "thru the mouth and out the vent" approach yet?
Nice video. Explains the ups and downs of hooking each way and shows about the main ways there are to hook up. When I fish, i usually get bass, perch, and crappie. Will these fish take a minow? Also, I don't think they will, but would sunnys, catfish, and carp take a live minow?
Glad you enjoyed this video and actually, all the fish you mentioned will take a minnow :) It wouldn't be my first choice for carp or sunfish though :)
Hey nice videos especially the trout ones I fish a lot of steams in Lake Ontario tributaries. Does the thin wire hook work for big fish like a good size steelhead and brown
....as long as it is a good quality thin wire hook, it should be o.k., but if it's a bigger trout, there is a possibility of it straightening out - be sure to use your drag and not apply a lot of pressure :)
You can use a size 6 or size 4, thin wire long shank hook, Aberdeen style and the t-turn is size small, which is part number 7x8 and has a 35 lb capacity - you can get all this in the pre-tired t-turn bait rig number 1A or number 1A-6-G
Thank you....FINALLY an honest comment....I'm trying to cement a bond with my son....and BOTH of us learn in the process.....any other tips are well accepted! Ty again!
Hello Ivo its Mike again just wondering what time of year is good for catching minnows, can you find them in winter? What is a good size minnow to use. Thanks and look forward to learning more ways to fish fresh water. Thank you
Hi Michael - always great to hear from you - best time to catch minnows is in the late fall, winter and early spring (it's tough in the summer). In the winter, you can find them in rivers and even creeks.....the rivers shouldn't be frozen and the creeks you would need to cut through the ice, so it's a bit of work - rivers are best :) I like to use medium to large size minnows, depending on what I'm targeting. Wish you all the best over the holidays and into the new year :)
Thank you very much Ivo. The lakes and rivers around here are not frozen and I am going to try to catch some minnows for crappie. ( I watched your crappie video and I am hooked) I just want to wish you and your family a very merry Christmas and happy new year )
Hi thanks for the info. I knew of 4 ways, but the one of hooking just through the top snout and then out thur the upper lip is new to me and I will definitely try it as soon as opening fishing this year in Wisconsin. Thanks again
hi i like your videos they motivate me to go fishing i like in San Diego close to the beach. do minnows are the same as the small fish u can catch in the beach shore? ive seen people catching them for bait. can i use them to take it to a lake and fish with ? i would appreciate your advice
+Leo Dlva Hi Leo....they would be very similar and used the same way as minnows and they are great to use as bait and to fish with - however, check your local regulations as it is possible that your state may or may not, allow the transportation of bait form one body of water to another :)
Yes they will work and suggest using a size 3/0 or 5/0 hook and also use a sinker....if you have any T-Turns, they will let your bait swim freely around tangle free :)
Yes - I'm planning on ice fishing :) In fact, I was out on Jan 4th and had a good day on Lake Simcoe catching perch - we had our camera man with us, but it was too cold to film (the camera didn't like the extreme cold temps at that time)
through the snout is the best but feed the hook in the mouth first and come out between the nostrals. theres a hard bone in there and it seems to hold the hook very well
Conner Smith Hi Conner - I'd have to say minnows and Worms.....a nice night crawler on the back f an SP1 or SP2 Viper spoons will catch plenty of walleye as well as a Flexi jig & minnow combo, or a T-Turn live bait rig with minnows :)
Hi Charles - its great to use a bobber when fishing - here is an episdoe where we are using bobbers and minows: ruclips.net/video/W0v-NBcudZI/видео.html
I understand using live bait and hooking minnows is all part of fishing, and the fish would probably be doing it to us too if they were higher up the food chain but there's still something about it that's hard to stomach. Minnows are great for trout fishing though and I always use them or worms, that's just the way it is. Some people hook them incorrectly which is a lot worse, at least Ivo is showing people how to do it properly
Hi Aidan - very nice to hear from you and thanks for taking time to write and for your feedback - good luck on the water - hope you have a great year in 2014 :)
Thanks Ivo and the same to you and your family :) I look forward to your new videos throughout the year and I'll keep you posted if I catch any nice ones myself :)
Hi Kin hwa yong - when using live bait, I generally let it sit there, and may move it toward me a bit from time to time, but I do not work it like a lure :) good luck on the water
I always do the either the tail or the bottom lip/top lip but not both at same time one or the other depends on the water cause heavy current usually I do top lip or tail because when I do bottom lip on heavy current it gets taken off easier so if waters calm I'll do tail or bottom lip ruff water tail or top lip
I've also read about hooking on top of the back and then back out the back so that the longer part of the hook is essentially running along the back and the hook comes out and sort of forms a C. Not sure of its effectiveness. Have you tried it out?
The minnow was like. Please! slit my throat. 😖 hahahha I love your show thundermist. But i dying laughing as you kept going . Poor bastard lol jhahah. Good job and video lol
Hi David - we have a pre-tied rig, with hooks and t-turns, ready to go....all you have to do is tie it on and snap on a sinker :) Look for Thundermist T-Turn Bait Rig #1A or #1A-6-G Both rigs come with thin wire, long shank hooks (Aberdeen style) which are perfect for using bait for all panfish. If you were looking for game fish, then use the T-Turn Bait Rig #2A - good luck on the water
Legend says that this man is still poking the minnow with his hook to this day
And the minnow is still moving around freely
Lmaooo🤣🤣
That's was beyond priceless absolutely hilarious thanks for the good laugh 🤣
The only place he didn't shove the hook was up its A$$

This minnow deserves an Oscar🏆...they way he took those pokes and some say he's still alive til this day...#🎣
That particular minnow had a very hard day ! Ha !
LOL...thanks for writing in and hope you have a very nice day :)
which is the best way to keep the minnow on the hook when casting the minnow
The fifth method I show wold be best, where you go through the mouth and back out behind the head :)

I was thinking same thing.. Poor fish.. hahahaha
Never knew there were so many good ways to hook a minnow. Thanks
Death by 1000 pokes from a thin wire hook.. 😔
RIP, tough minnow
I think liveliness is going to be an issue for that minnow
Hahahaha!!! Am I a deviant since I find this theme hilarious? 🤣
hahaa

I use the tail hook method, it keeps the hook from going deep and setting the hook in the gullet.

...thanks for writing in :)
Hey! I enjoyed it. It was informative. And I know you used a different minnow each time..you just didn't show it on the video to make it short, right? :-)
hey thanks Ivo, I always wanted to try using minnows
Minnows work well as bait and hope you are able to give them a try - if you ice fish at all, they work great there as well :)
***** What is the best way to catch minnows to use as bait? I can't wait to start fishing with live bait this spring!!
GreatWhiteNorth82 We like to use a minnow dip net - seems to work really well :)
The reply from the "Notorious Angler" below seems to describe the "Hook line and Threader" method. I just recently saw their product and was curious as to how long their minnows live.
Have you seen or tried their "thru the mouth and out the vent" approach yet?
I have not tried that product so if you do, let us know how you make out :)
Great video, dont mind all the peta folks feeling bad for the minnow!
it was an honorable sacrifice... I mean maybe not a voluntary one but it is still appreciated
Good tips guy.

Lori-Ann Seethaler Thanks for the feedback Lori-Ann and good luck on the water :)
What size should the thin wire long shank hook be? Also could you give me the names of the hooks 3 turn swivil and the sinkers you use thanks
You can use a size 6 or size 4, thin wire long shank hook, Aberdeen style and the t-turn is size small, which is part number 7x8 and has a 35 lb capacity - you can get all this in the pre-tired t-turn bait rig number 1A or number 1A-6-G
@@thundermistlures thank you so much pro fisher man 😊
Personally I perfer the lip hooking method but I clip one of the side fins to keep the minnow off balance and wiggling more. More wiggles-more bites!
Thank you....FINALLY an honest comment....I'm trying to cement a bond with my son....and BOTH of us learn in the process.....any other tips are well accepted! Ty again!
Do you have a video on the proper crappie rig?
Hey Great Video just got a quick question i went fishing and have a lot of left over minnows put can i use dead minnows and do they work or not?
You can use those dead minnows for catfish :)
Thanks :D
Great video, Fast uploads!

Hi Stefano - minnows will work great for you - steelhead love them :) Glad you enjoyed the video
Will these tips be useful for bigger bait fish such as live anchovies or smelt ? Like for saltwater fishing ?

great video ,,thanks for the tips
Glad you enjoyed this minnow rigging episode and thanks for writing in :)
I will torture 1 minnow for every comment about how he tortured the minnow. Keep it up sissies.
Haha, you're just cruel and probably a psychopath, fucking loser lol.
Do it. Any way I don't like people torturing minnow x 99999999. Do it 99999999 times now.
Thanks for the information!!
David Wall Live minnows are a good bait to use and hope you have many great days on the water David :)
Should we use a bobber with minnow fishing? Or is it only best to use bobber during ice fishing?

Ever run a contest for a fishing trip for new anglers?
...not yet but perhaps some day :)
Do smallmouth and largemouth bass prefer minnows over crayfish or crayfish over minnows in your opinion?
Hi Robert - minnows in the spring and fall and crayfish in the summer :)
thanks that is good to know I love spring the best after the spawn
What rig set do you use line weight ect.
Hi Jason - that would depend on the situation, but as a general rule, you can use 3/4 oz or 1 oz sinker and 8 - 10 lb test line for most applications
I've also read about hooking on top of the back and then back out the back so that the longer part of the hook is essentially running along the back and the hook comes out and sort of forms a C. Not sure of its effectiveness. Have you tried it out?
+Alek Mellen Hi Alek - yes, that is yet another method which could be used :) Tanks for writing in and good luck on the water
Hi Ivo, what type of hook pattern are you using and what size is it?
Hi Aidan - when rigging minnows, I like to use an Aberdeen hook, size 6 or size 8, long shank :)
what would be the minimum size minnow to use before you should put it back because its too small to use at all?
depends what you are fishing for, however, a 2" minnow would be a good reference as a minimum size :)
The minnow was like. Please! slit my throat. 😖 hahahha I love your show thundermist. But i dying laughing as you kept going . Poor bastard lol jhahah. Good job and video lol
Can you give a example of what hook I should use? from amazon etc
Good info. Thanks!
So glad you enjoyed this episdoe and thanks for taking time to write :) Good luck on the water
Good tip
Next time you think you're having a bad day, think about this minnow.
I always did through the mouth and out the eyes... does that work too?
Thank you!
i have a hard time using the thinner hooks the fish strips them out straight like a 6 lb bass or bigger
Bigger the minnow bigger the hook
Warren Johns Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water :)
