I'm only 30 years old. I learned about You Bet Your Life and The Marx Bros as a 8 year old by watching reruns on TV . The Marx Brothers comedy is shockingly modern. It's timeless as evidenced by the fact that it was still being shown on television when I was 8 years old. I much prefer the old TV shows and movies to most of what we have now.
Groucho was a trend setter, ahead of his time. But by the time he was famous he'd been in the business 20 or so years, hard work and talent, and a much deeper understanding than most, of who we are.
A great clip. Cannot believe I used to watch Grouch back in the 60's when I was a kid. Real television back then - think they called it FAMILY entertainment back then.
I think his mistake was that he did not go from show to show with his "strange bit." That is exactly what Phillis Diller did starting out on Groucho's show.
I googled Albert A. Hall. The gentleman was born in 1886 and died in 1964.. His wife, Catherine M. Hall standing next to him, was born in 1892 and died in 1981.
My Late Dad loved Groucho and so do I:)! Groucho is a classic comedian! Like my Late Dad said, "There is so much tragedy in the World, we need some laughter, like Groucho Marks". This guest, Albert Hall is hysterical! He could have set his aspirations on being a Comedian too:)!
I’m too young to even have seen but older Lyft driver told me to look this up. Is pretty crazy. Lol. Was that guy trying to be weird? Jay Leno bringing back this show I guess.
Absolutely !! He should have been an entertainer! I’m thinking that could be why he said he moved to Hollywood! He could have funnier than some ‘ so called ‘ comedians they did/do have!
i assume that was his angle; get on tv, be seen, land a gig as MGM extra. He is good. Its as good as Crispin Glovers genius/but strange 1rst appearence on David Letterman.
Watching this is like watching the Beatles in a funny kind of way. You are in awe of just how great they are. In this case, Groucho was the one who paved the road. There was no one before him. He created and everyone else followed. It is hard to even fathom that this is "the pioneer." I am completely blown away.
This Mr. Hall should have been a comedian himself what a pity. Producers just let passed this magnificent character, at least we got this precious fragment of Mr. Hall's delightful personality.🌹
You shouldn't believe everything you see on T.V. This guy was 69 years old and already retired. This was back in the days before everyone became a wannabe.

2:16 Groucho showing his brilliance - referencing a printer's devil, which is a printer's apprentice - 'why did you get fired, maybe you're not the type' - comedic genius that was missed by most of the audience! Just awesome!!!
This is one of the rare times when Groucho had trouble keeping a straight face. He looked like he was going to burst out laughing a few times. Groucho's act is mostly keeping a straight face and making smart remarks, virtually never laughing or smiling himself.
And, it was awesome seeing Groucho like this. He's always entertaining and quick on his feet. Good to see him enjoying himself with this guy. I'm a huge fan. And, the guy reminded me of Huntz Hall. What a trip.
Classic! Yes, a master of puns so quick they can be missed. Another one I particularly love that most of the audience missed was on his hilarious What's My Line 1959 appearance, when he asked a guest "Are you a corrupt politician?" He then says: "Or am I being redundant?" Few have such genuine, razor sharp wit.
This one is very funny from the very first moments. My jaw dropped. I am surprised that Groucho could get away with mimicing the guest, "and how do they make MON-EY?!". That's getting personal. Mr. Hall looks like he was aware he himself was a caricature, and fair game. He was crazy-looking in his conversation with Groucho but normal and genial with his partner guest
Yes, I agree with you. For all of Groucho's (well deserved) reputation for insulting people, he was almost never so directly insulting to one of the "ordinary people" guests as he was here with Mr. Hall. If Hall hadn't been such a good sport about it, it might not have come off as funny as it does.
Hall seems comfortable with himself - I assume Groucho realized he would be secure enough to laugh at a bit of mimicry. Hall seems to be playing up his mannerisms tbh.

Bravo!
im 37 now n just found all this out last year lol
We're about the same age, then. As my parents were in their 40s when I was born in 1991, that's how I first saw a lot of older movies.
Groucho and the Marx Brothers, Like no other. Also from New York.
Ok Boomer
Not enough sex and violence, of course, but some of it wasn't too bad back then.
@@thepotatoking2504 oh stfu clown kid
@@thepotatoking2504 The best part of you was left on a sheet.
I remember when it first ran on the network. In S.F. 1953.
The fact he wasn't hired in movies on spot is a tragedy
I think his mistake was that he did not go from show to show with his "strange bit." That is exactly what Phillis Diller did starting out on Groucho's show.
So true... he was funny and strange. Good combo..
Laughing my butt off lol
Yeah, he definitely seems like an actor.
Maybe he didn't feel like selling his soul
This never gets old.... Groucho's reactions are even better than the faces his guest is pulling. 🤣😂
I googled Albert A. Hall. The gentleman was born in 1886 and died in 1964.. His wife, Catherine M. Hall standing next to him, was born in 1892 and died in 1981.
He said his wife was in the audience.
@@Papadoc1000yes you are right. His eyes distracted me.
@@am4793 lol
Thanks for adding extra details! I was a kid in the 60s and 70s - and we had many more people who were "characters" back in those days! 😳
The first trial of MDMA...Gurning like a rabid granny. 👀👀👀
I have watched this more than a few times, so funny.
Funny that the "crazy eyed" guy is more witty then 99% of ppl nowadays
And without even trying too hard.
He kinda normal by today's standard
I’m too young to even have seen but older Lyft driver told me to look this up. Is pretty crazy. Lol. Was that guy trying to be weird? Jay Leno bringing back this show I guess.
"Say the secret woid and the duck'll come down and give you the money."
Witty is not a word I would use to describe him.
Great Nostalgic Clip
One of the funniest moments on television ever. Groucho appears genuinely freaked out by this guy.
I WOULD HAVE BEEN TOO-SUPER WEIRD…DR.BRYANT LANE…
Why wasn't this guy hired by someone at that time, he would've been perfect for specific rolls in movies etc..!!
Crescent rolls? Potato rolls? Sweet rolls? 'Cornbread Rolls, the Movie' ?
Absolutely !! He should have been an entertainer! I’m thinking that could be why he said he moved to Hollywood! He could have funnier than some ‘ so called ‘ comedians they did/do have!
i assume that was his angle; get on tv, be seen, land a gig as MGM extra. He is good. Its as good as Crispin Glovers genius/but strange 1rst appearence on David Letterman.
@@blackmonster4708 ..you know I thought the same thing, a good way to get discovered.

Watching this is like watching the Beatles in a funny kind of way. You are in awe of just how great they are. In this case, Groucho was the one who paved the road. There was no one before him. He created and everyone else followed. It is hard to even fathom that this is "the pioneer." I am completely blown away.
I've watched this 500 times and I cannot stop laughing at Grouchos responses especially "how long were you there"
Same.
500 times? Could've sworn it was 499.
Never seen this before . Hysterical. 🤣
This is one of the funniest sketches I have ever seen, brilliant Groucho.
Groucho was so quick witted and funny . Plus he had that face and smile .
Can you believe that this broadcast was televised more than half a century ago.....that's 61 years ago! How times have changed!!!
This Mr. Hall should have been a comedian himself what a pity. Producers just let passed this magnificent character, at least we got this precious fragment of Mr. Hall's delightful personality.🌹
He couldn't have been a game show host. Those eyeballs would have scared away the audience, the guests, and even the studio employees.
@@jonaldblip_ LMAOOOO😂😂😂
I 100% agree with you. Truly a delightful person. Wish we could have seen way more of him.
@@tonyh4638 i love the banter between him n Groucho lmao!
Old guys with starey eyes and creepy voices are a dime a dozen where I'm from..
"You and Gargantua each get 50 dollars" That line cracks me up every time I hear it Lol
Same here! Groucho just came out with it so quickly!
Just watched this full episode on Tubi TV. Groucho was so witty and hilarious and Albert Hall was keeping right up with him!
This my favorite episode out of all of these you bet your life. Albert Hall had me laughing so hard I was hurting. Great episode a 10
I was waiting for him to say "NIAGARA FALLS."
SLOOOOWLY I CREPT!
Haaahahaha!
LOL
😂
@@bachrocktheamericahatersan5799 STEP BY STEP...INCH BY INCH..lol, thanks for the reminder!!
dude would have been a great character actor, definitely could be spooky.
He became one.
I think that was his plan, act odd so he would get noticed
absolutely
Yes!!
You shouldn't believe everything you see on T.V. This guy was 69 years old and already retired. This was back in the days before everyone became a wannabe.
Good Lord I’m so depressed and I can’t stop laughing. 😂 Hilarious contestant !
Ridiculously funny, brilliant, my belly is hurting, simple comedy fantastic. 😆
This is my favorite one thank you for posting it. Also thanks for giving the complete version also I think I've played this 20 times he reminds me of my uncle when I was a kid I absolutely love this it was so good thank you again
If Mr. Albert Hall wasn’t a stand up comedian he should have been! He and Groucho made a good team.

@@rayhoward363 I would not have believed that was this man's actual name.
Amazing the genius of Groucho,, 60 years later,, still hysterical!
Perhaps the most memorable person I never had the good fortunate to meet. Al Hall, the gift that keeps on giving decades later. Truly one of a kind...
This is hilarious. Timeless!
So funny… 2023
Whenever I get depressed I watch this clip and all's Wright with the world.
Me too!!
They're all dead now.
This guy should have been hired by someone in Hollywood to do something.
My thought exactly
He was. He played the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Didn't even need make-up!
My guess is he was acting strange to draw attention to himself and maybe get cast in a production.
They did have a crazy eyed comedian. I don't recall his name but you would recognize.
@@nyctransmutationcircle.4766 -- Marty Feldman comes to mind, but he would've been young at the time...and "YOUNG (Igor)" later as well.
This video is definitely addicting. I don't get tired of seeing it over and over. There's only 1 Groucho. I guess they're 2 Albert Halls.
Why would anyone thumb down this classic clip?
Absolutely lovely piece of film to watch, so entertaining, brilliant,
This was back in the days when watching television was fun.
There have been other eras of fun television. Like when almost every single one of us were young. That's what made the 80's-mid 90's fun TV.
Groucho was wonderful.....zany and intelligent ....
Groucho and Mel Brooks are my fav comedians.
He was a comedic genius.
"Where did you go when you left the farm?" Groucho was full of double-entendres that day!
2:16 Groucho showing his brilliance - referencing a printer's devil, which is a printer's apprentice - 'why did you get fired, maybe you're not the type' - comedic genius that was missed by most of the audience! Just awesome!!!
Pure genius, groucho's reactions are priceless!!!
Incredible mind he had.
I must've watched this clip 50 times since I first seen it. Really makes me laugh. Groucho was sharp as a tack
yes it is addicting
This is evidently the best "do your own thing" personality I've ever watched.
“I didn’t select the name.”
Why way Mr Hall pronounces word is hilarious 😂. What an odd fellow 🤣
I was three years and one day old when this aired. I love Groucho, the ad lib king! Nobody was sharper or faster!
“Why did you get fired [from the Printing job] Maybe you weren’t the type... ”
That joke went over everyone’s head lol!
Cos he hit his head on the "font" at church
I had an inkling you’d say that.
@@jarnec9428 Stop "pressing" the issue.
I noticed that. Completely missed by the audience.
This has to be my favorite Groucho episode!
“Last time I come down here without my blackjack” I’m going to start using that line.
Improvised homicidal maniacal laughter. What great fun with adlib..between these two characters 🤣😅💙🙏
Absolutely the funniest skit I have seen in many years....Groucho is a pure jem, thank you! ps....I almost wet myself from laughing so hard.
I’m reluctant to do this but let’s get back to you Mr. Hall, perfect timing
That was gold !
Yes he did. I saw a couple of times where Groucho really wanted to laugh out loud.
@@waynej2608 now that you mention that he does look a lot like huntz Hall
Guy looks a little like Huntz Hall from the Bowery Boys.
Oscar Robinson I thought so too
That's who I thought it was !
My thought Exactly
You don't suppose they were related?
Groucho was the master at sarcasm and that’s what made him so funny.
Classic! Yes, a master of puns so quick they can be missed. Another one I particularly love that most of the audience missed was on his hilarious What's My Line 1959 appearance, when he asked a guest "Are you a corrupt politician?" He then says: "Or am I being redundant?"
Few have such genuine, razor sharp wit.
+Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life I think this guy really spooked him. He spooked me 😱
Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life this guy is a dead ringer for Hunts Hall from Bowery Boys
Hall seems comfortable with himself - I assume Groucho realized he would be secure enough to laugh at a bit of mimicry. Hall seems to be playing up his mannerisms tbh.
That's why it was a set up.
