- Highlight of this show is clearly Groucho's encounter with Albert Hall (couple #3), a very funny exchange where Groucho looks genuinely thrown by the odd man with the crazy eyes.
While Groucho always had jokes to fall back on prepared in advance by staff writers, he never actually met the contestants until the show. Seeing him startled like this is always a high point when it happens. He spends most of the segment here pretending, hilariously, to be scared for his life.

I cannot stop myself from watching Albert Hall again and again. This is one of the best examples of genuine humor that I have ever see. Funny, funny, funny!!!!

@@henrybrowne7248Hard to say. Groucho's staff supposedly interviewed the contestants beforehand. Apparently, Groucho usually was helped with cue cards hidden from the audience but, in this segment, Hall seems to turn tables on him. Especially hilarious is Hall saying, "Evidently...I didn't select the name."

Groucho is a comic genius. His brain is so quick, he answers the contestants immediately.
Yes. I just loved the way he tied himself into Hall's, I'll call it, act.
I was born in '51, and remember actually watching this show live on a B&W TV with so many tubes in it that it glowed like the Manhattan skyline. I used to think that the "50's were sort of just "A Different Time" ... now they seem much more like a different planet.
Luckily we still have our outside drive in theater.

This is my favorite so far. The guest at 16:14, Albert Hall, and Groucho's reactions, are fantastic. I can watch it over and over and not get tired of it.

After seeing the level of the many of the rest of the comments people have left on this video, I can't believe there was once a time when I wanted to see more! Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life His name was Ramiro G. González 😁, he was call Pedro 😂 I thought he was acting but it was for real. Priceless. And Mr. Hall, just saw Groucho reactions are hilarious. And when Groucho lay back at him when he said he was the Print's devil or something like that. 😂😂😂😂😂 That reaction was a jewel.

Those two young girls at 18 and 21 carried themselves with more grace than most at 30 today. Proper women. I was shocked they were so young. Great episode!!!

Great watching this again after so many years. We kids watched "You Bet Your Life" regularly with my Mom and Dad........when everyone in the Family watched the same television and you had to get up from the chair to turn the station! Good times! LOL
I thought that my old man's Curtis Mathis TV set was a beautiful piece of furniture.
Mr Albert Hall had me howling every time he answered a question.
I think the audience missed the joke at 19:39: "What sort of work ya been doin' lately? Homicide?" LOL, brilliant.
They also missed the joke where Groucho asked him why he no longer works as a printer's devil - "you weren't the type?"

That was hilarious. Watching shows like this makes me feel I was born in the wrong era (and the wrong country!). Perfect entertainment - Groucho's interplay with Mr Hall was sublime. Wonderful stuff.

Love that the woman who was Hall's partner went from being freaked out by him to pulling him in and giving him a real smack on the cheek!!!
On the cheek??!! Heck no. That kiss landed right on his mouth!! She was very smart, she knew all the answers, and went straight the big money on each question. Some of the questions seemed very hard. The producers stiffed everybody on the final question.

@@SuperC888 Studied Law, my answer would have been Sir Edward Coke. Blackstone isn't taught that much, even to someone specialising in legal history. The way that question was worded, it could have been answered with at least 5 names. Halsbury's can be argued to be a commentary (by its strict definition) and its the most influential current legal text (all 31 volumes of it).

Albert Hall made me cry last night... I was literally crying with laughter. I don't believe that they could have found a more perfect foil for Marx.
I agree completely! This was one of the funniest exchanges I've ever seen on television. I couldn't stop laughing. Listen to it again when he gives the answer "Helsinki" as the capital of Finland. After a short pause he slowly says "I don't know" and almost sounds like a scared young boy when he says it. When he realizes his answer was correct he has a look of pure happiness on his face! The young woman embraces him and gives him a kiss and they act as if they won the Irish Sweepstakes!

What an amazing character this Mr. Hall! He seems completely unable to be other than what he is. A genuine nice guy. Not as clever as June who obviously shows warmth to him but he makes some keen observations. Absolutely gem of an encounter between him and Groucho. Many thanks to the uploader!

Groucho is another "blast from the past!" What an original comedian - with wit and outrageous humor! His banter with the 'gargantuan' was the best! Who would ever suspect such a character? LOVED IT!

saw this about 6 years ago on tv, funniest guest ever. Wife and i kept pausing/rewinding to laugh, took over half an hour just to get through the Al Hall interview. Thanks for posting it up.
The magic of Groucho Marx is taking anything that comes his way and being able to find the funny. Straight suits, shy people, or people like Mr. Hall with his over the top body language and facial expressions, Marx works with it all and has fun with it.

I lived in that time and compared to NOW it was HEAVEN. ANYBODY could make money in business. It was SAFE, very little crime, no comparison to now. It was over and it started going downhill in 1970, the Monetary and Economics system has just gotten lousier, BB

Today, so many people (especially in big business) will lie, cheat, and steal just to get ahead. Another big difference is how much better looking the women were back then. This episode was truly funny with Mr Hall's 'google eyes' in responding. Thanks so much for uploading these oldies.. Nothing of today's shows can compare to these.
The 50s were pure class. This was around four months before James Dean tragically left us and six months before Marty McFly time travelled into classic Hill Valley. Grouchos quick wit and deadpan humour is timeless

16:05 last couple. Groucho was prepared to fight when he took off his coat and did his boxing pose. Albert Hall is a funny guy just being himself and his country friendly mannerism.
Groucho was brilliant. He knew Albert Hall was the meal ticket that night and he played off of him perfectly.
I am personally glad you posted these videos they remind me of those days and times with fond memories. Groucho was absolutely one of the comic classics of all time. I watched each and every one and haven't laughed so much in I can't remember. Absolute joy.
He was also halarious on What's My Line.
Isn't it strange that those two young women look much older than the stated age...more mature than the ones today! And also note how smart they were, some of those questions were hard. Thanks for sharing this video.

Thank you for uploading this marvelous episode. Albert Hall (October 1886-August 1964) and Groucho's reactions were hilarious. Like another commenter, I also wonder if Mr. Hall was a tad tipsy before appearing on the show, or if he was just a ham.. As always, many thanks and blessings for keeping the memory of Groucho Marx, George Fenneman, and You Bet Your Life alive and well.

Thank you for posting this. Albert Hall was absolutely the best guest on the show in my opinion. What ensued and the interaction between he an Groucho was pure magic and some of the funniest improv by Marx you will ever see.
Absolutely one IF not THE funniest clips from the show was with Albert Hall. It was most certainly a bit staged but the actual quips and reactions were all Groucho.
Mr. Hall ( a retired newspaper man) was born in 1886 and died 1964, a resident of Seattle having aspirations of making it in the entertainment industry (surprise, surprise).
“You could safely say there were few people that have ruffled Groucho Marx’s feathers. Of those very few it would be one Mr. Albert Hall who would certainly place number one on that list.
Hall, a contestant on “You Bet Your Life" was selected by the audience along with Mrs. June French, a messenger who was 21s going on 40. None of them could have known just what a good pick they had made with the Kansas born Hall, a man possessed of such a bizarre demeanor and with such a strange repertoire of facial expressions from his lilting, creaking speech to his bugged eye stare (such that it must be seen to be believed). Marx, unsurprisingly, although taken aback recovers quickly and together they produce arguably one of the funniest segments in the entire run of the show.”

Thanks for the comment, +mojoworld1! I just want to point out that the bit you quoted isn't entirely accurate, in that the contestants on YBYL were no longer being selected from the audience by this point in the show's run. They stopped doing that fairly early on, though they continued for a while to try to give the **impression** to the viewers that they were still getting contestants right from the audience. The odds on finding an Albert Hall through concerted effort are low enough, let alone that he'd just happen to have been sitting in the audience one day. :) The contestant selection process was very careful, and there was a lot of advance preparation before the show. Groucho never met the contestants beforehand, but the staff did extensive pre-interviews.

Most audience participation shows worked on this premise. Other words, I agree about the audience members being previously selected & used, however going by what is written down in the timeline. That is what I believe I stated.
Certainly, Albert Hall’s were probably not just coincidentally in the audiences. However, irrelevant in my opinion.
We both agree (I believe) that Mr. Hall & Groucho had a great interaction with Mr. Hall on that show, hysterical quips, physical humor
and subtle jabs. All of which made for the perfect comedic storm.

I thought perhaps Albert Hall was an actor, which were known to be featured periodically on the show, but IMDB documents only this single TV appearance as his legacy. He certainly had a unique set of mannerisms ... I can't imagine working with this guy at a newspaper.

My parents enjoyed watching television, especially funny, comedic programs, so much so that I've always believed while in the womb, I was able to pick up on humor, laughter, and "having a good time" via my mom and dad!
Just like the "experts" claim that playing music or reading out loud or even talking directly to the unborn-child can actually cause the child to "be a step ahead" of those who were not purposefully given these direct gifts.
Quite fascinating to study. My mom told me she did a lot of these things with/for me (back in 1955) that she didn't always do, as much, with my brothers. My parents knew I was destined for the entertainment world right when I was born: I slipped right out, into a standing position, and did my very first stand-up routine!!

I've seen the shorter Albert Hall clip before, and he was hysterical. This one shows the whole episode, and he seemed like a very nice guy. And he was lucky with the partner he had... June was as smart as a whip.
This man Albert Hall is truly an amazing person, his eyes are so scary. But, this young man has been married 42 years in 1955!!!!!! All these shows are so facinating to me. I was born July 16, 1995. DeSoto? Never saw one before tonight, on this show.

My half brother is 14 years my elder - his 1 st car was a Desoto - Orange/Red and a Cream/White - with the Chrome Polished and the Tires Armor-al'ed - it was a "Fetching" car - at the era time - it was a cool American produced car -
"Dad had a Buick Invecca" bronze interior, exterior, with a white convertible top - it was fab! (Non had a station wagon - I was born and they were early 60's Yuppies.... traded in the 58 Jag Sportster) WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!?!
Those Desoto mechanics wore awesome uniforms to work on cars with.

Mario Da Re really was the brother of movie actor Aldo Ray!! From Wikipedia: Ray was born Aldo Da Re in Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania to an Italian family with five brothers (Mario, Guido, Dante, Dino, and Louis) and one sister (Regina). Wow!
I actually have this one on a compilation DVD which includes several of these episodes along with some Laurel and Hardy, W.C. Fields and Buster Keaton.
Groucho seemed to be on top of his game on this one. That first lady was truly a beauty and seemed to be very sweet!
Favorite Groucho quote: "A man is only as old as the woman he feels."
I heard that quote when I was with my last girlfriend who was 24 years younger than myself.
