Deadpan comedy is probably the hardest comedic skill to master. Very few people are gifted enough to pull it off so successfully and naturally. Those who say Mr Gonzales was perpetuating stereotypes, they obviously don’t know comedy. This man is putting on a clinic.
Very few people these days will appreciate this sort of comedy or history. Then very few appreciate wisdom in politics. 😂 Pedro is a dependable Texican. Can't do better than that unless from San Antonio, which he is and location of The Alamo also. Wonderful 💯😊
Just saw Mr. Gonzalez-Gonzalez in I Died a Thousand Times on TCM's Noir Alley. Eddie Mueller said to check out his appearance on You Bet Your Life, which made that possible. Thank you for posting.
Groucho in his book called him his favorite contestant of all time. He never once cracks a smile, a real pro with a natural sweetness that gave him a Harpo quality.
"Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez (May 24, 1925 - February 6, 2006) was an American character actor best known for his appearances in a number of John Wayne movies." ~Wikipedia
I know people give him a lot of shit for the end Bc he was kind of losing it (as if that’s his fault) but he still was way more quick witted then most 20 year olds in his 80s. The cold feet line itself wasn’t like the most insane joke I’ve ever heard but it was way more his timing and delivery and how fast he threw it out
6:59 Groucho deliberately setting up and passing the punchline is crazy, comedians can often think of the same joke, but it's a rare sight to see it done on this sheer level of wit
Ramiro [NOT Ramino!] was a natural talent, and while he did a tremendous amount of television, I only wish he had been cast in more films. His role as Carlos the inn-keeper, opposite John Wayne in Rio Bravo, is absolute perfection. Only half as tall as Wayne, Ramiro [by 1959 billed commonly as Pedro Gonzalez-Gonzalez] commands the screen in all their scenes together; Wayne knows it, and gives him plenty of room to perform. In fact, this appearance with Groucho led to him signing with Wayne's production company, Batjac, the start of a working relationship that lasted for two decades. Although played here for laughs, the story of meeting his wife, dancer Leandra Aguirre in 'San Antone,' is entirely true. They remained together until his passing in 2006.
I have seen this episode more than once and always had a good laugh. Also, I shared this show with my grown up children and they laughed louder than me. What a treat for life eh?
How awesome. Would have loved to see these shows live. I'm not that far behind you but missed most of the shows in the sixties. Was too young and we played outside back then.
Gonzalez Gonzales was an actor. He was in a few John Wayne movies like "Rio Bravo" and "Rio Lobo". He actually had a pretty big role in "Rio Bravo" as the owner of the hotel.
Pedro Gonzalez - Groucho's favorite all time guest. He was a professional who worked the still surviving Hispanic vaudeville circuit in South Texas and thereabouts. It was a vaudeville world Groucho knew from his youth of dancers, comics, singers, dare-devils etc. that was long gone in the rest of America.
Thirty years after vaudeville was dead in most of America there was still a Southwest Chicano Vaudeville circuit still going where Gonzalez perfected his style the same was the Marx Brothers did a generation before. Groucho's favorite guest.
He was a professional vaudevillian touring the American southwest for years and years before he met Groucho. After this appearance John Wayne called him and offered him a ten year film and television contract with his production company.
It was all years of practiced comedic timing. Gonzales Gonzales did not drive a station wagon - he was a professional comedian and performer with years and years of practice before he ever met Groucho. I think that's why they got along so well and why Groucho enjoyed his dance - Groucho danced when he was younger in a really similar way.
@@PapagenoMF Actually that was a national dance that is still performed now. But, I know the Groucho dance you spoke of. Like Groucho and brothers as well as Laurel and Hardy they all had a off stage persona. It was nice of you to bring that up so that we would not be taken in by his act and thing he was not action. But part of the fun is US being in the dark of the true talent. I remember feeling betrayed when Bowzer from Shanana turned out to be a Juliard student. All great enternators.
I never saw this video, and I am glad. Videos such as this one are a treat, and are best the first time around. Finding an old gem, like this, is a real delight. It is like finding out that your favorite musical artist has a hit song that you never heard.
he has a star on hollywood, was in movies with j. Wayne and Steve McQueen and a lot more. mm have to admit, never connected him till i saw comments here. good actor. and good person.
Ramiro, or Pedro, Gonzalez was singing and dancing in Vaudeville shows from the time he was a child. It has always been rumored that this Groucho episode was set up for him to promote his talent. Whether or not that is true, he became an easily recognized if not well known actor in films and on TV. He was smart with the money he earned, buying up real estate around Hollywood and Los Angeles and retired quite comfortably. He is the grandfather of actor Clifton Collins Jr. I was actually searching for a clip from "Capote" when I found this.
Pedro Gonzalez was certainly up on groucho... You could see Groucho's mind turning... Juan Pedro suggested English or Spanish... Groucho had a hint he was putting him on the whole time... Sudden realization....
@ 4:50 When I was 12 mother did that. She threw a pot of water on a group of girls that were hollering for me to come down and play. Pedro is funny as hell.
I used to watch "You Beg Your Life" when I was a kid but didn't see this particular episode then. Now I have watched it a number of times and still get a kick out of it. Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez was called "Ramirin" when he played the Vaudeville shows in San Antonio. My mom went to those shows as young woman and knew some of Pedro's relatives. This was before TV. If this was all set up it was a work of genius!
Nonsense, he was a popular entertainer on the South Texas Hispanic vaudeville circuit which was like the last survival of authentic American vaudeville.
When you throw Groucho for a loop...guest is top notch.
he got Groucho to laugh pretty hard there.
Deadpan comedy is probably the hardest comedic skill to master. Very few people are gifted enough to pull it off so successfully and naturally. Those who say Mr Gonzales was perpetuating stereotypes, they obviously don’t know comedy. This man is putting on a clinic.
He's a Titan.
Yeah, his deadpan was awesome..
Had the great Groucho busting up!! 😮

Awesome and authentic.

I saw it too. Recorded it on my DVR. Gonzalez Gonzalez and Pard were the best actors in the movie.😊
" 2 people in the act and I get 3rd place!" Classic Groucho.
Groucho in his book called him his favorite contestant of all time. He never once cracks a smile, a real pro with a natural sweetness that gave him a Harpo quality.
It is amazing that he can keep his deadpan going--he's just so funny.
I agree!
He is or was so funny, i have seen his performance several times
you would have to be pretty funny to make Groucho laugh
He only laughed twice on the show. I've read his brother Zeppo could always crack him up.
Boy, that deadpan delivery is fantastic. Groucho may have met his match with this man.

Hoy crap, that was his real name... Lmao
This is comedy gold. Both men are super quick and hilarious. Groucho clearly likes him.
Groucho was so quick-witted.
"Two people in the act, and I get third billing!"
There will never be another like him
Brilliant line.
I know people give him a lot of shit for the end Bc he was kind of losing it (as if that’s his fault) but he still was way more quick witted then most 20 year olds in his 80s. He made Groucho laugh, very few have managed that.
Ya and a real laugh
Groucho laughing is just about the cutest thing I've ever seen.
Groucho was a true genius and legend. We need more comedians like Groucho. Love the Marx brothers
"9 years" he says and the nod of the head as if to say "phew". The best unconscious comedian ever and what a foil for Groucho.
Very conscience. Comedy like this takes considerable skill.
3:52 🤣I just noticed the woman gave Pedro the "look" back lol😅. I was in stitches!😂

Mr. Gonzalez was a very nice man and had a good life as a character actor. He and his wife both died in 2006
sorry to hear that .
Ditto
He had a great part in the Movie Rio Bravo with John Wayne.
His wife died later because she accepted his posthumous Star on the Hollywood Walk of fame,

Absolutely one of best acts on Groucho's show. I saw it live. I am old! Google this guy. Awesome career.

John Wayne was watching this show and laughed so much he hired him
never heard of this bloke before. he's great. he and groucho play off each other brilliantly.
Watch a few late1950s-early 1960s John Wayne westerns, and you'll see him.

He's so sincere ! I love it !
John Wayne saw this and gave Ramino his start in the movies in Hollywood! True story!
Even Groucho got a good laugh. I think he didn't mind being upstaged by Gonzalez.
This is hilarious! Watched it several times. John Wayne saw this and put him in the movies which he ended up with a star on walk of fame.
John Wayne thought he was the funniest comedian since Chaplin.
Yes I recognize him “I bring you some more shells.”
Can’t stop watching 👍 when he starts dancing, I lose it 🤣🤣🤣

Yes yes it was, Vaudeville has such a horrible history surprised you’re acting like that’s a shame

I wish, oh I wish, TV was once again this entertaining.

He was a professional vaudevillian touring the American southwest for years and years before he met Groucho. After this appearance John Wayne called him and offered him a ten year film and television contract with his production company.
I saw this show. He won the most money, and also, was given a Hollywood contract, and he was in several western movies.
He had one of the most recognizable faces and voices in all of Hollywood's character actors.
Hilarious. Funny little pumpkin Pedro. So adorable. ✌️😂
Vote for Pedro
The little head turn after he says he’s been married 9 years is so funny and I don’t even know why lol.

Awesome that Ramiro made Groucho laugh so much!

This was probably the only time in the history of Groucho that he played the straight man.
John Wayne signed this guy up to star in western films. He was illiterate but learned the lines with help from his wife.
He was a professional performer.
This show aired on February 12, 1953. John Wayne was watching the show that night & liked what he saw in Pedro and
cast him in several movies.
Raimiro Gonzales Gonzales is the father of my high school classmate Rosie Gonzales, who was, when I knew her, a delightfully sweet young lady.
Groucho's ad libs are hilarious. A true comic genius.
Viva México! Love Gonzalez 😁
Never saw this. What a classic meeting of two natural comedians.
I just saw him a few days ago in an episode of I Dream of Jeannie.
