I can't believe I'm finally seeing this after all these years (first saw it on CBN in the '80s). I did a double take back then when I heard Hibbs mention Chillicothe, Ohio, my hometown. I just read a newspaper column from the time and learned that the day after this episode aired, our local river overflowed its banks, causing a citywide flood that is still talked about today.
Very sorry to learn about the sad loss of Dr. Albert Hibbs. Wish that I could have interviewed him. He is in my forthcoming doctoral dissertation on the history of tv and radio space coverage from 1923 to the present--this will make a nice human interest anecdote to include. Thanks for posting this episode!
Albert Hibbs was a systems designer on Explorer I, the USA's first satellite to orbit the earth in 1958. He was also a spokesman for NASA. He died following heart surgery in 2003 at age 78.
Albert Hibbs also was, for a time in the 1960's, Science Editor for NBC News,. and hosted a children's science series called "Exploring". Supposedly, this appearance led to Hibbs' being hired by NBC News for their Science Editor job, although I think he was based in Burbank.
Probably not a use--PhD doctoral dissertation--you anticipated when doing the painstaking process of obtaining, converting, and posting these! Thanks also to the NBC NJ warehouse worker and the Groucho Marx grandson and the lucky telephone call that saved these cultural gems from being lost forever.
Groucho was not stingy in hosting talent, brains, or personality. His show should have lasted for years and years, many years. Thank goodness for RUclips...
As a kid, I remember watching Dr. Hibbs and the Ritts Puppets on NBC's "Exploring". The Peabody award winning show introduced math & science to young viewers. 🤖👍
Mr Hibbs attended Cal Tech..... that's very impressive 😱. Even ( by today's standards ) not just any joker can get into Cal Tech. It's a nice small campus located in Pasadena, Calif
No one can take Groucho,s place, it's been tried at least twice Bill Cosby and now Jay Leno. At least Jay tries to lead people to the secret word. For example : if the secret word was "beer" Jay would ask the contestant how they like to spend their time, and when they say for example I like to party, and Jay would ask what they like to drink.
On a humorously ironic note, I came to this clip last night from binging Simpsons "Steamed Hams" parodies. Anyone watching this show who has seen a few of those will know what I'm talking about ("No, Mother, it's just the Northern Lights!").
Wikipedia says that kohl is antimonite, which is a chemical compound that contains antimony, but is not in fact antimony, which is an element. It'd be like saying carbon dioxide is oxygen.
I was born in 1954 so it's like seeing this show for the first time!! lol I have a question though... if the couple wins $1000 in the first round then plays for $2000 from the question after the wheel ..Does the players keep the total amount of $3000 if they win ? Or are they forfeiting the first $1000 for a chance at the $2000??
My understanding and experience from watching this game version of the program - there were several versions during the shows run - is that you don't keep the $1000 if you win $2000. $2000 was a lot of money in 1954, the same year I was born. February 9th.
This is a great episode. Some really smart people!
Georgette is awesome!
really great!!
Mr. Hibbs had a quick wit and great sense of humor.
My goodness those were some smart folks on this episode! What a pleasure to watch!
Lq1
Georgette Holt and Albert Hibbs were probably the two smartest contestants they ever had!!!!

How did it turn out?
I remember watching "Exploring" on Saturday mornings with Dr. Hibbs.
@@MrMenefrego1Health problems significantly delayed me on doc dis. Rough draft in progress now up to 410,000 words and just getting going!
I bet this edition looks sharper than it did in 1959! Amazing!
One of the funniest episodes!

Jimmie Dee ...and what a charming man! ;)
***** Now maybe, but not then!
***** Oh, I'm sure it's quite lively there, but according to your former comments on Lingo, I thought you were strictly referring to physical matters.
***** Looks? I'm talking about personality. I've never gone for the looks because, as you said, It's "fleeting"! ;)

Yes! If that grandson hadn't been there the films would probably have been destroyed...

"You Bet Your Life" did run on TV for eleven years, so it indeed enjoyed a very long run.
@@altfactor ...I wish it had lasted as long as WHAT'S MY LINE? did (17 & 1/2 years). Both were fantastic shows, I think...
Chillicothe, Ohio, I played and produced music there back in the 80’s.

If I ever went to desoto dealership I will surely tell them Groucho sent me
2:35 Groucho's face is priceless. 😂
How to choose a favourite amongst all these gems? Merci infiniment pour le télécharement pour nous et la postérité.

Toward then end of the show, Groucho is in rare form or something has intoxicated the show which makes it very special
EXCELLENT ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hibbs was scheduled as crew member of Apollo 25. Apollo ended with 17. There is an asteroid named after Hibbs and his wife.
I guess that's a joke.
I love it when they spin the Wheel
Groucho: "Now you selected 'Earth, Sea & Sky'. You crook, you!" [8:03-8:08]
3:42-Groucho cracked me up there.
Hibbs earned his doctorate under the great Richard Feynman, and they became good friends. He died in 2003.
My goodness. "Bothroom" lady Ms. Holt is quite entertaining.
A true rocket scientist, the questions were to e-z for him.....lol

1m8s Groucho "You Bet Your Knife". Rather pointed.
At the 9:00‐9:03 mark, you can practically see the wheels turning in his head (no pun intended) as Dr. Hibbs contemplates his next quip.
That show is tops, nothing like that today

Albert Roach Hibbs had an incredible career: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Hibbs

Oh, no ! I thought everybody knew Juan Manuel Fangio. What a disappointment for the players. Got 500 instead of 2000 !
