He was my neighbor when I lived across the street from him on Aletta Ave in Culver City, CA. HE WAS SUCH A GREAT GUY. I actually have gardening tools from him and I was able to give him Warner Bros, cartoons that I had on video tape.

Pedro appearred with Rex Allen Jr at a Lone Pine Film festival a while back. When my family would ride the Mexico boat ride at Epcot and Pedro showed up in the market scene, I'd tell my kids I met him at Lone Pine.

So talented! So glad I found this video after hearing about it for years. Good thing Wayne was watching. As for stereotyping, well, that was inevitable, just as it was for great Afro-American actors like Tim Moore and Spencer Williams who played Kingfish and Andy, respectively, on the old Amos 'n' Andy TV show. But they made money. Pedro was the Mexican-American Cantinflas, and I'm sure that Cantinflas would agree.

The family was funny and entertaining. One of his brothers was my godfather and he and his sister used to play guitar and sing at Disneyland. When they'd come to my family's get togethers they would do their Disneyland act. They had very bright personalities. The Gonzalez-Gonzalez family and mine were very close, but somewhere around my teen years they just disappeared, I believed they had moved out of state. Tried my best to reconnect with them but failed. By now they have probably passed on or are very aged with infirmities. They hold a lot of bright special memories. Pedro I didn't know that well. I might have met him as a child.

What a nice tribute to an amazing man & actor/performer! When I received the link to the Marx show where he was discovered, I was put off by how Mr. Marx poked fun at Pedro, but maybe Pedro knew that would happen & was great with it...it sure got him started on the star track!! And his bio on IMDB says he had a keen comedic sense, & stole the show from his family, who had a traveling show when Pedro was young. I can almost remember him from the westerns that I used to watch as a kid, in the 60s -- I really think I remember some of his characters!! He was clearly a VERY good man, as well as a great actor/performer!

What I remember about Gonzales-Gonzales is that he is actually the only actor in the long history of Warner Brothers cartoons ever to voice a Mexican character who was not only not a stereotype, but a professional man... a Psychiatrist!
Check out the short "A Taste Of Catnip," released some time after 1963. Unfortunately, like all of the other Daffy/Speedy cartoons, it's cringingly unfunny.

I had no idea that he had a career. I remember seeing his clip with Groucho many years ago, and knew it was probably the most famous clip from a very famous show. I thought that after that appearance, he went back home and that was it. No idea he became an actor. Good for him. Sounds like he was an entertainer before he was on Groucho's show, however. Even if it was a bit of a set up, he pulled it off spectacularly.

I tried my hardest to find out the name of the song since it’s quite catchy, the best I could do is listen to it over and over and I got “la vanito chino chino” but I can’t find any song even close to the one he’s singing. Maybe it was a made up song so he could do the act with the pants, they did that a lot in the 50’s 60’s.
