The whole band is great. But, Eddie and Dave were magic together back then.
I saw them a couple pf times with Dave and he could get any audience riled up. More than the times I saw Sammy with them. I'm not dissing on Sammy but Dave was great frontman.
and they really didn't like each other at all.
Doing the studio version first is so smart. Major props.
For a time, Diamond Dave was basically the coolest guy alive.
Yes he was!
Chick here... and sexiest guy alive too!😍
Agreed. Dave was the shit for a time.
Absolutely true 😂🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
“Mean Streets”, “Hear About It Later” and “So This Is Love” are great, the last two also having live videos from the famous’81 Oakland concert.
I was at that concert in Oakland. Half the time I was watching the band the other half I was staring at Valerie Bertinelli, who wasn’t too far away from me.
Eddie's tone is insane. My fave VH song
Best tone in the business
Been on repeat!
Check out the Lexngton Lab Band's cover of this. If there was no visual, you would it was E.V.H. The whole cover is insane.
In the middle of this song, David Lee Roth makes fun of an executive that walked into the studio while they were recording it ("that suit is YOU..."). Roth would add commentary on a separate track while the band played the instrumental parts, and his comments were sometimes added to the mix ("Everybody Wants Some!!" is an example). The voice that says, "Come on, Dave, gimme a break," is their producer, Ted Templeman.
True. Saw interview with about that studio and the guy that was their told the story how Dave was screwing around and Ted said cmon Dave line and Dave said one break coming up. Classic
For those that weren't alive back then . Every Van Halen record was a ground breaking guitar history moment. That is how bad ass this shit is.
"Push Comes to Shove" is my favorite off this album. Abnormally bass heavy for VH, which is probably why I like it so much. Also, Eddie's rhythms in this song are killer. Really unique.
Just because Jump was on 1984 doesn't mean that album was "commercial." It's really just VH's style to be fun and carefree. Lots of great, rockin songs on that record. I love this song, love this album. I feel like this particular song is a great example of how Eddie was able to swing being a great rhythm and lead guitarist at the same time. Watch it live and you will see how flawlessly he switches back and forth between the two.
💯 Love "Drop Dead Legs" & "Top Jimmy".
@@graciefolden2359 exactly!
1984 wasn’t necessarily more commercial. It is much more polished though. VH was always being pressured by management to put out albums fast to capitalize on their popularity. Sometimes the songs weren’t as well made as they could have been. Especially the Diver Down album.
@@donjackson5522 I love that album. 😁
Thank you guys for playing this song I’m 66 now but I remember being in my early 20s I was a major fan of Van Halen and watching them play this song live at the Los Angeles sports Arena back in the early 80s back in the days when I still had long hair and was a rock ‘n’ roll animal. Now I’m older I have very little hair but still love rock ‘n’ roll and enjoy watching You 2 listening to my favorite songs. Remember Mean Street you blew it!! I have told you several times and you didn’t want to listen so you have to play it next lol love you Guys keep up the great work.
As long as you're still rockin' that's all that matters! And 😂, VH has too many songs apparently!
Roth's guttural yell on the intro is one of the best in all of rock 'n' roll.
Yes, definitely do Mean Street, my favorite!! This album (Fair Warning) is generally a guitarists favorite VH album.
You've got a long way to go. Their third album, "Women and Children First", is classic." Everybody Wants Some" in particular.
“Blue-eyed murder in a size 5 dress” …. what a great line. DLR has a way for words.
My favorite song on Fair Warning. Love the guitar riff.
🔥
Definitely do "Mean Streets" my favorite off this album. My dad was a biker when this song came out "Bandito" everybody called our street Mean street. LoL but may have also been me practicing this song over and over..lol😂
What a band. Not much tops this sound- iconic and legendary.
Every song from their album 1984 is a banger. My all time favorite is Girl Gone Bad.
There’s some odd time phrasing and I’m intrigued enough to find out exactly what he’s doing. Alex is overshadowed by his famous brother and is thus is sadly overlooked and vastly underrated as a drummer. He really has a unique style that’s totally distinctive and complex.
That riff though! The tone as well and that flanger ... Classic!
Its funny, even cool modern people are moved back in time when this music starts playing. VH is badass and moves everyone!
I love that you guys do studio versions first before the live shows. It truly gives you the best measuring stick for the song and band. Have you guys started the bob seger rabbit hole yet? A good start is turn the page. Tons of great songs from this legend
Not yet!
Probably my favorite VH riff! Nobody comes up with stuff this good anymore!
In 1981 I saw what was to be the greatest guitar player ever, hand down the best. This was my first concert of probably close to a hundred or so. Try listening to DOA, The craddle will Rock, or Take your Whiskey home.
Unchained is one of the best guitar riffs ever. 🤘🏼🎸
Thank you for doing studio versions first, I 100% agree it's best to do it that way.
DEFINITELY listen and react to "Ice Cream Man","I'm the One","Somebody get me a Doctor" for sure!
Such a loud concert at one point I look at my girl next to me and notice her brother on the other side is sound asleep lol incredible
Van Halen The most ultimate Rock Band of all time R.I.P EVH
One of my favorite Van Halen songs
"Blue-Eyed murder in a size 5 dress".... Classic lyric!
When you do 'Mean Streets', I am sure one of you will remember where you first heard that 'bangin' on the guitar strings' sound. (Was during the Eruption Solo near the end!)
Appreciate the mention of the "playfulness" in their music. When they came out, hard rock was pretty much dominated by metal, and the ambiance was a lot darker, a lot of dark subject matter. leather and chains, scowling, lotta black. Van Halen were colorful, had a sense of humor, and Eddie always had that grin like he had the perfect buzz going...It was different but still heavy...
My first true rock band as a kiddo ❤
In the vocal break thats Dave talking to their producer Ted Templemen in the studio control room...he produced the first 6 van halen albums (debut album to "1984" album) and Dave's first solo album Eat Em and Smile.
Fair Warning is their best album, hands down. I believe they were on the verge of breaking up as a band when they recorded it, that’s why the music is darker and album cover is intense. Unchained and Mean Street are fantastic.
Great driving song, my favorite album from Van Halen
You guys are so much fun to watch! This song, "Unchained" is considered by many fans and "experts" to be Van Halen's best song. "Mean Street" would be a good one follow up with. I'll tell you as someone who was a musician/teenager during the late 70's and early 80's there's another band that reactors like you are missing out on ... Triumph is another power trio out of Toronto, like Rush ... from the same basic time frame. Their music was more main stream at the time and their vocals are other-worldly! They have TWO great singers, Rik Emmet is their guitarist who sings most or their stuff but the drummer Gil Moore is also a great singer in his own right. You guys would have a great time checking them both out. "Never Surrender", "Lay it on the Line" or "World of Fantasy" were pop rock hits at the time sung by Rik. My personal favorite by Gil was "When the Lights Go Down" but the "popular" song he sung was "Tears in the Rain". Their lyrics are always positive. At the time they were known as "the good guys of Rock 'n Roll".
Saw them live in the late 70s
Simply put ..badass rock and roll mfers..saw Eddie play eruption live,it was epic..blessed to grow up in the greatest rock era ever..nice to see others enjoy it
Now that's classic f'ing rock.
There is a live version of this. Also, check out Ice Cream Man from their debut album.
Fire!
So, apparently Dave (David Lee Roth the original singer), liked to give the management or "the suit's" a hard time. So, when he was laying down the vocals a suit walked in and Dave goes on his riff, "Hey, man. That suit is you..." And then you hear the guy in the control room say, "Come on Dave, give me a break." I love that they left it on the record. Great reaction.
The tricky change-up in this song takes a few times to grasp. lol..may be the first time I've seen Sam slip up trying to keep with it. lol...Love it guys.
Nice. My favourite VH song from my favourite VH album. Unreal...
One of the greatest guitarists to ever do it. R.I.P. EVH.
Use to be my fave song by them(now Ain't Talkin bout love), but sitting at #2 Ain't bad!
You guys gotta check out Im the One and Atomic Punk from the first album. Also a bunch from the second album Somebody get me a doctor, bottoms up, Dance the Night Away, etc
This is my fave Van Halen song. Thanks for this! Enjoy your journey, guys. How about some 90s? Our Lady Peace - Superman's Dead or Automatic Flowers.
Actually when this was released this was a commercially successful song. My favorite riff and guitar tone comes from Mean Street from the same album. Eddie has always been my favorite guitar inspiration.
Fun fact: That is Steve Martin saying "Come on Dave give me a break."
My personal favorite off this album is "Mean Street". Serious finger tapping at the beginning of the song. "Fair Warning" is probably my favorite VH album, though I go back and forth with VH 1.
"...C'mon, Dave, give me a break!" is the voice of the album's producer Ted Templeman.
Glad you guys are doing another VH track. I would recommend their song I'm the one. Cheers
Just listen to that Guitar....and compare it to the other stuff from that year....it was just outstanding....still makes the little hairs stand up...
Hey, guys...if you're interested in lyrics, I have tons of rock lyric videos.
I agree with what you say about bands changing their sound with time and being influenced by management, but I'm pretty sure VH never had that happen. Every VH album has the similar songlist...
2 bangers
2 radio friendly songs
2 great rock songs
2-4 deep cuts
And I don't believe that the radio songs were intentionly made that way. VH just liked to make fun songs and some were not as hard as others.
IMO “Fair Warning” the best VH album, Eddie at his meanest.. that Tone!!
Gotta do “Somebody get me a Doctor “ from VH2 . Absolute banger !
8:04 Mostly only musicians understand this joke, because "break" in music is when you stop playing for a small bar, so after "give me a break" he was like "he he he, one break, coming up" and there was a break in the song xD
Early Van Halen is the Best Van Halen
David Lee Roth A Frontman’s Frontman
Eddie Van Halen Absolutely Amazing Guitar Sounds The Bass & Backing Vocals of Michael Anthony and Killer Drums by Van Halen
To me by far the greatest Van Halen
Whole lotta Rosie by ACDC ,live at River Platte should be next on your list.
There is Van Halen and then everyone else. A category of 1.
That's their musicians album. Best VH album IMO
The cover art is from a painting called The Maze by Kurelek and it is a perfect representation of pain and experience.
fun facts: the two personnel, namely Alex van Halen and Eddie van Halen whose name is Eugenia van Halen, come from the country or where I live, namely INDONESIA a country right in Southeast Asia, which is beautiful and peaceful 🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩
By the by, the fantastic album art is by Canadian artist William Kurelek.
no one ever gives Mikey his kudos - his bass drive is what makes me move w/ this tune !!! Eddie's tone is unreal nad Dave's adlib is amazing but Mikey's bass drive and his background high vocal harmonies are out of this world !!!! YOU GO MIKEY !!!!!
this album is known as their dark album, they were going through bad times, Eddie and Dave were always fighting and Dave was getting ready to walk out the door
Now this is a Banger. Mean Streets is my favorite.
Was hoping you did the live in Oakland '81 video. Still, great classic VH tune.
Next time!
Mean street is my favourite! Look forward to that one
Love yalls reactions want to see some BOSTON
Ok Van Halen is super, A 4-Member Band that Fires on all cylinders ❤🎉??? Can you get their from here. Love your channel band you both are fantastic. Keep rolling and ❤ the heads bobbing....God Bless you. 😊😊
Thank you! Have a great week!
Nice choice!! Try "Mean Street" or "On Fire"
You need to listen to Mean Streets. Another incredible song!!
It's Not Enough by the Van Hagar era is one of the best songs in their whole song list.
another rocker by them is called Mean Street
Mean streets a must from this album
Please react to Skid Row... Wasted Time. Sebastian Bach wrote the song for his friend Steve Adler. He was the original drummer of Guns and Roses. Watch the music video and pull up lyrics. A must watch! You'll be blown away ❤
Should have watched the live concert video...its legendary.
Looking forward to the live 🔥😎
Thank u this is huge ...love this album
This is one mean groove.
Have you done Mean Street? From this album. Gotta do it 😊
When this came out it was super heavy.....Van Halen is more what I would call party rock....their songs weren't super deep, just fun...summertime beach vibe.
My fave from VH.
I'm so glad y'all hit this song! Ed's guitar tone is just flat-nasty here! I love how you get his guitar in the left ear only, all the way up to the solo. He just tears it up from the get-go! If you stick with your "studio/live" format, your next 3 VH tunes should be:
5150 (5150 album/Live Without a Net)
Runaround (For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge/Live: Right Here, Right Now)
Judgement Day (F.U.C.K./L: RH, RN)
Also throw in Right Now and Top of the World (same format as #'s 2 & 3)
Keep up the great work!! You guys rock!
Live**** not lice lol
@@rothed16 Lol. Nice catch.
Definitely dotje live version of this so chose Unchained live in Oakland 1981..
Think Don was going out and in a suit. Stopped by the studio. Dave made a lyric
Big Mike planting that fat ass bass line. Killer bass riff.
One of the best VH songs…of course, you could say that about 50+ of their songs…but this is one of my favorites👍🏼
A couple that I’ll suggest with amazing intros…
-Everybody Wants Some… great drums & guitar…gives it a jungle vibe🤘🏼
-Intruder/Oh Pretty Woman…my personal favorite guitar intro🤘🏼
Would love to see your reaction to both…not a lot of people have reacted to them & they don’t know what they’re missing…IMO.
are these people under a rock
That pedal tone bass is outstanding...
Yeah, if we go into politics or professional wrestling...this might just could be our 'arena entrance' tune.
We subscribed. Keep on rocking!
Hey kids! Love your reactions. VH was a staple in my youth. If you haven't done so already and want a toe tapping rock song that will get you wiggling in your chairs, do Roll with the Changes by R.E.O. Speedwagon from the album.. you can tune a piano but you can't tunafish.
I guarantee no disappointment.
Great choice!
If you like all Edward's riffs, you must listen to all ofvfaur warning, that's my favorite lp!🤘😎🤘
React to Van Halen There's Only One Way To Rock either Live Without a Net or Tokyo. Both are amazing!
When Sammy became the lead singer it changed the style of the music they performed
Yes to suck pop rock
@Joel Davis, Van Halen's songwriting style changed before Sammy joined the band my friend. The last album VH wrote with DLR "1984" really wasn't the VH I was rocking to as a kid. I mean a song like "Jump" wasn't exactly the kind of tune we were use to or expected from VH to play driven by a synth keyboard, right? +++Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul+++
@@216Numbskull Girl Gone Bad and House of Pain are bangers..be well also
My Van Halen will always be with David Lee Roth. He Rocks
