There's nothing like hearing a Van Halen record for the first time. You never knew what Eddie was going to bring to the party and it always blew your mind.
I saw them in 1982,they were great! David Lee Roth was a great frontman,Mike Anthony great bassist and backup vocalist,Alex great on the Drums, and Eddie Van Halen, beyond great, what a great run they had! I was so fortunate to see them live back then!
I missed my one and only chance to see them when they were doing their 1984 Tour. Wished I could have seen them on their Fair Warning or Diver Down tour. That would have been awesome to see!
Im a 60 year old rock guitar player. I got to witness eruption like 78-79 my older brothers album collection. Agree, it was so out of left field for me, yeah we had Hendrix and others but when VH hit, it was over the top! - and mean street I remember buying the album the day it dropped and brought it home and there were about 6 or 7 friends who showed up and I put it on…we all sat and listened and quite frankly I was just digging it but there comes a point where it just kicks in and drives and it was like F yeah!! So happy to have lived in the same time it all happened…rock on!
I never heard Eruption until I was 10 years old in 2002, but I’d never heard anything like it before. It blew my mind. My dad had a VH1 cassette and that was one of the most incredible records I’d ever heard up till then.
Oh man, this one brought back memories. Thanks for posting. This whole album (cassette for car) was vital to my high school years. Eddie was on fire on this entire song. The entire band killed it on this song. Also, Michael Anthony got hosed by Eddie when he brought his son to the group.
First Time Visiting and this reaction was VAN TASTIC!!! AIN'T TALKING BOUT LOVE 💓 probably my favorite Halen tune. Got to react to some official STAGE videos and show Dave's Gymnastic skills!! Great Channel!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
VH in their prime is the most untouchable band of all time. Mix of everything you need to be thr best. Musicianship at the highest level, feel, swing and groove, front man confidence and entertainer...and then the most important element, energy! Their energy breaks through the speakers...jumps out
You've never said a truer word - and not forgetting the good time feel that oozed from their music - listening to original Van Halen always made me want to get and go - no idea where to though!!
Van Halen was the perfect blend of musicians thrown into 1 pot. Such an American Iconic Rock Band. Regarding Michael Anthony, (Cannon Mouth) as the band called him, his backing vocals were absolutely the magic of VH's overall sound. Mike probably had the most beautiful, strongest back vocal of anyone in rock n roll. Beast of a singer and player.
I saw VH on their Fair Warning tour at Madison Square Garden, 17th row on the floor dead center...absolutely fantastic. I just watched Joe Satriani play the intro to this on the Howard Stern today. Pretty amazing to see someone try to play Eddie's licks.
I remember the first time hearing this song. A friend of mine always changed his parents house into a real cool party place, when they were on vacation. Well, everybody of us did that several times... But he had something special: to announce the party he hang a flag in the window on the second floor, so everybody knew... Result: many people he did not know crowded the house. Being 17/18 years old at that time, it was of the best things that happened. So that one night everybody was drunk or/and stoned I heard "Meanstreet" for the first time. For me, being a guitarist a punch in the face. Next song played was "So what" live from SRV....next punch. That was when I decided to take over the DJs Job, and because we had records at that time, I played "Meanstreet" several times, as well as SRV. After about one hour of playing these two songs, a really big guy came to me and said: "Okay, your job is done!" and played both albums in full.... End of the story: the friend stayed with me for over 30 years, playing in a band together (but none of the two songs....respect) Love your videos!!!!!
EVH was obviously such an incredible talent, but Alex and Michael are also amazingly talented musicians. I love the drum track and bass line in this song! Glad you gave them a little shout out.
Fair Warning, IMO, was one of their best albums. They took a lot of musical risks on it. Not the typical SoCal backyard party band they were known for.
I was already steeped in MTv VH by the time I bought Fair Warning. It was a departure from the pop rock feel. I liked the album, but I like all their albums. I think I gravitate to non lyrical songs they did (even in other popular bands' recordings) to hear the talent of instrumentation.
The intro on Mean Street is one of the most wicked guitar intros ever. Eddie's ferocious tapping expresses how he was at the time. Michael Anthony is still a superb bassist today, working with Sammy Hagar and the Circle.
Even on this song, his meter is pure icing on that intricate rhythm. Singing in a lower register with that old crooner flair punctuated by his bag of sounds and fun high squeals was just what we needed going into the eighties. They were the best the west coast had to offer and boy, they broke the ice. Love Sabbath but I fell asleep during their show after Van Halen opened.
Hey Burch you should introduce Alexis to the very 1st Van Halen album next. Ain't talkin bout love or Jamies crying ?? I'm sure her eyes will pop out after hearing the GREAT GREAT sounds that dropped jaws all over the World as it was introduced. Michael Anthony's background vocals were also a staple in Van Halens sound. Enjoyed the reaction.👍👍😁😁
I saw this tour and of course it rocked, they had some band named G force open for them and I was impressed, I never heard of them before, they were with Jet Records. Sure am going to miss this band. I've seen them six times, four with Dave and two with Sammy and then once when Dave went solo, Dave's show really rocked, Cinderella opened the show.
I remember hearing this for the first time as a new release, when I was going on 8 years old, and being just blown out of my socks 🧦by the guitar sounds🎸 and the visual story painted by the lyrical imagery. That's the stuff that stays with you for life.
Really does. I mean, they were great but some of their stuff is kinda depressing. "My love is rotten to the core. " Not always uplifting but that was how they rolled..Some fun stuff ,too
Wow ! I do remember Columbia music . I'm old enough to have bought 8 tracks ! its interesting watching you guys - one a first listen and one enjoying the song again
i used to play that intro as loud as my stereo would go. in the vinyl days, that meant standing over the record player and picking up the needle each time you wanted to hear it again.
I had a chip on my shoulders during Van Hagar and didn’t appreciate their music until much later. To showcase Sammy One of my favorites is obscure. He once fronted a band called HSAS with Neil Schon. They did “A Whiter Shade of Pale” that is absolutely GREAT! I highly recommend that.
This is probably my favorite VH album!! The opening of this song is just sick!! "Unchained" is just a banger from this album! Enjoying all of y'alls reactions, keep 'em coming guys!!!!
Fair Warning is so tight and uniformly engineered and the cover art is so perfectly matched it might as well be a considered a concept album. It's Van Halen's 'Animals.'

Sooo here's my story on this album and tour. I am 54 and have lived in the SF Bay Area my whole life. This was my first concert at the age of 12. Oakland Arena. Oakland, Ca., now...original MTV used to show..."Unchained" and "So this is Love" in heavy rotation off this album, which were both filmed at the concert in Oakland! So every time they came on MTV I got to relive my first concert. You can find both videos here on RUclips
67 here; I saw all the greats; including these boys: VH w/ Dave: 5; w/ Sam: 3. And I remember that first tour- in Seattle, and when Ed got to pickin'- and SOUNDED EXACTLY like the album, you knew THEN...you were witnessing musical prodigy/GENIUS. And Live?....these boys ROCKED their asses off. Then had bigtime FUN, stage moxie, hooks out the ass....EACH member within the band wasn't a minor player; each was a standout....but they were two different personas depending upon who was up front.
Mike is such a solid bassist & a terrific backup singer. I think he & Alex gained more prominent roles after Sammy joined, at least when I heard the "5150" album. The first three VH albums have some seriously fantastic rock songs, & among my favorites are this, "Little Guitars", "Unchained" & "Everybody Wants Some". Great reaction y'all, look forward to more VH! 🤟
Great video. I would love for you to play her Hear about it later from the same record. I’ve been listening to Van Halen for a very long time and that song still floors me like hearing it for the very first time, amazing stuff!
Always thought that subtle background YOWL from Dave that's low and subdued in the mix, that you can hear around 6:18 here, was a really cool production touch. Sounds a bit distant and haunting in a way.
Fair Warning is the fav. of many rock guitarists and right up there with the first album. Think back to the "Live Without a Net" Eruption solo and remember Eddie's technique for the beginning of Mean Street...simply out of the cosmos! King Edward lives in our hearts, and ahem, Rolling Stone; Ed is # 1 IMHO! lol...DLR is maybe better described as the "Full Bug." Remember the bottomless chaps! Van Haleniacs like me were seriously worried when Sammy took the helm until we heard "Best of Both Worlds," and we knew all was well in the world!
What people rarely realize is that Eddie didnt indulge himself during the solos. Most people would expect Eddie to have minute long solos and throw every trick he could, but Eddie's solo's, while flashy, were like quick bursts, and some were not that wild and crazy. The aforementioned Hot for Teacher has probably one of the longer solo's during the Roth era.
I bought this album the first day it was available at the mall's record store in 1980. I was in high school and needless to say I love VH! This song is so awesome
This was from their 4th album, "Fair Warning"....one of their best, musically, IMO. This album works really well as a complete work, from beginning to end, and is a little bit darker...a little cynical. So many memories related to this song and the rest of the album......from the end of high school to cruising Main Street with my friends, hanging out and partying.....all those things we did in our crazy youth...we did it with attitude with this, and other music as our soundtrack!
Looks like I may be the first...but i get the feeling that I may not be the last. When it comes to the Fair Warning album, THE song, for me, is "Unchained". Maybe for another time....
To see Diamond Dave at his "sparkliest" Alexis needs to see Just A Gigolo. And maybe Panama. I also get the feeling that Hot For Teacher might make her blush just a little😉🥴
Good choice! A great choice ;) would’ve been the real Eruption followed by You Really Got Me. THAT one-two punch left all our jaws on the floor when it came out. I was 9 when my big brother brought that album home in ‘78 and put it on. That one-two punch made me beg my parents for a guitar. RIP, Ed.
I love that you listen... actually listen to the entire song instead of stopping to pontificate when you hear something interesting. Michael Anthony is a terrific bass player, but his soaring high harmonies were a huge part of what defined the VH sound.

Michael has a better voice and range versus Roth. Ever hear him sing the intro to Deep purple?
Nice. Fair Warning is arguably Van Halen's best album after the debut album
100% agree!
YEP!
100% agree, total perfection
Agree, yet, it's the one that sold the least. Eddie wanted a darker album and the rest agreed.
IMO VH II & WACF had better material.
"David Lee could be a narrator and his voice sounds groovy" --- this girl really gets the appeal of Old School Van Halen!
Mike Anthony was one of the best back up vocalist in rock

When I saw them at Monsters of Rock in Dallas, Sammy had lost his voice and Mikey sang lead the whole set. Such an underrated vocalist.

I've always loved DLR he was the entertainer of all entertainers lol His older daughter is also a musician!
Always thought that subtle background YOWL from Dave that's low and subdued in the mix, that you can hear around 6:18 here, was a really cool production touch. Sounds a bit distant and haunting in a way.
Great song, and I aggree, I love the solo from Hot for Teacher, moreso the second half when he's walking down the table.
Michael Anthony had that high pitch harmonizing backing vocals that was that trade mark Van Halen sound! SUCH AN AMAZING BAND!!!
See the intro also is part of that live solo from a thing you did a while back on his live solo. He put that as the last part but adds to it.
I bought this album the first day it was available at the mall's record store in 1980. I was in high school and needless to say I love VH! This song is so awesome
1981 Not 1980!
With your time machine too....
"Eruption" has an epic intro, but the intro to "Mean Street" grabs you by the balls.
unless you saw vh live- you can't appreciate how good a backup singer Michael Anthony is -shockingly good
You keep doing VH, I might just have to subscribe. 😂
Great reaction from you both. 👍🏻
My favorite song by my favorite band growing up.
FAIR WARNING is my favorite VH album!! 🤘😆
Michael is still hitting those high notes too
Haha, I did the Columbia penny thing. One of the first cassettes I got was Diver Down
Looks like I may be the first...but i get the feeling that I may not be the last. When it comes to the Fair Warning album, THE song, for me, is "Unchained". Maybe for another time....
All Day! All Night! All Daaaaave TV!
Greatest American rock band ever.
To see Diamond Dave at his "sparkliest" Alexis needs to see Just A Gigolo. And maybe Panama. I also get the feeling that Hot For Teacher might make her blush just a little😉🥴
Mike's vocal harmonies were also key, over and above just his skillful bass work.
One of my favorites.
I like how she said he could be a narrator.he was a circus ring leader poet narrator etc.well done.also thanks for whole song and then talk.way to go.
A really good song off Fair Warning. My favorite is Unchained on this album.
This is one of my favorite VH songs also!!
Older Van Halen is on another level.
Anything without Roth is commercialized.
