Dave just had so much swag which complemented Eddie’s killer riffs and Alex and Michael’s rock solid rhythm perfectly. It will always be Diamond Dave for me
@Chief2112 I couldn't agree w/ you more. Eddie's rhythms kick so much ass. His leads are very chaotic and all over the place (I still like them), but his rhythms are so unique. One of my favorites is "Push Comes To Shove". The rhythm in that one is _SO_ good. "I'm the One' is one of my favorites by them. His lead _IS_ the rhythm in that one. It seems like Alex & Michael were having trouble keeping up with Eddie, he was playing so fast. Same with "Love is the Source".🤕👈😉 That's me after banging my head so much🤘
@@jimhardiman3836Jimmy Page’s next original idea will ALSO be his first. Dude’s a rip-off artist with a predilection for 14 yr old girls. Don’t believe me? Somebody said FAIR WARNING! Lord, strike that poor boy down.... VH1 is one of the best debut rock albums of all time, definitely worth a full listen. The studio version of Eruption is a defining moment in rock music.
I highly recommend listening to the first 2 albums back to back. Keep in mind, it was 1978 and NOBODY had ever heard the kind of thing Van Halen spawned upon the world. Those first two are just incredible from start to finish.
For me, David Lee Roth's vocals have so much personality, incredible delivery, so much creativity, gets down and dirty...there's no one else like him. Sammy has a 'better' voice in that it's more trained and controlled, he can belt out the notes and everything, but so can a lot of other rock lead singers. While his voice is recognizable he doesn't do anything more special with it than anyone else. You don't think, "Who is that guy, he's so interesting or mysterious or weird!', he just sounds like a great rock singer. DLR has that X factor that elevates him and that's why the majority of Van Halen fans like the albums with DLR on them vs Van Hagar.
Sammy has nothing on songs like this, and that’s why he’s been in the press constantly non-stop since Eddie died. He’s been scrambling to get his name back in the Van Halen camp as memorials get built in Pasadena with only the original four on it, and 99% of songs that come on the radio or a sporting event are Roth songs.
I think Mean Street is the center piece of this record. A really cool song on this record that is extremely different than anything else they've done is, When Push Comes To Shove. It's mostly played with a clean tone through the verses and has a very funky strumming rhythm, and the solo is very legato, ala Allen Holdsworth, who Eddie admired very much, and who I believe influenced this soloing style shown here. Please check it out!! 🙏
Fun to watch ---------->>>>> -- _Interview with Alex and Eddie van Halen in Dutch - 1979 (with subtitles)_ (Eddie and Alex talking in their native language)
Mean Street is a masterpiece w/in the hard rock realm. To hard core Van Halen fans and guitarists, Fair Warning is one of the top VH albums. To get a sense of the Sammy era, my recommendation is to pick from the live album "Right Here, Right Now," and maybe the track "The Best of Both Worlds." I have seen VH countless times, and Sammy was a more consistent vocalist but the DLR era music was more aggressive , and when DLR was on (I saw them at the US Festival with 330 K + fans), the band's live performances were unmatched. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
You still haven't played Lex "Eruption", the short track that years before started the whole tapping revolution - then there is the long live video of a later performance. For D.L.Roth there are also tracks from his 2 albums with Steve Vai - like "Yankee Rose" with Vai's laughing guitar sound, "Shy Boy" with Vai and B.Sheehan doing unison tapping, "Knucklebones", or "Skyscraper".
Fun fact. Eddie loved Montrose. Sammy was the singer for Montrose on their first 2 albums and Van Halen covered some Montrose songs with David Lee Roth singing them. This was before they had a recording contract and were still playing bars and parties.
I think both Sammy and David give the band their own style. And both are valid for their different reasons. I enjoy both! I love that you’re doing Mean Street because my cover band is also performing this live and it’s super fun! Thanks for all your reactions. Love them!
Hi guys, you do need to watch David Lee Roth live with Van Halen [ and even his solo stuff live ] ... He wasn't just their lead singer, he was a performer who dominated the stage. His persona just as important as his vocals. He is a character, and a cheeky one at that. You need to see the performer and everything you thought about Van Halen will change. They entertained via rock music and put on a show more than a rock concert. Even the music videos are great fun as you see Diamond Daves personally shine. Great reaction to a brilliant track....and Dave was the best ... every time ! Byeee Jim X
All the things you said, but to take it further, when I was a kid, I heard Dave’s charisma and personality before I ever saw Van Halen on tv or read an interview. That ….whatever it was , was in addition to the music and was a quality that only Diamond Dave brought.
@@odinquincannon4237 I remember hiring a vhs video from the video library by David Lee Roth, and it was hysterical. He played numerous characters so well you didn't realise it was him until he spoke. The same video introduced his music videos inc' "Yankee Rose". Really good.
Plus this tour in 81 was awesome plus their best tour shirt! I’ve still got my jersey style: black sleeves and white shirt. The band pic on the front with Van Halen Worldwide Tour 81 and the back with the VH LOGO and World Tour 81.
All VH members were amazing road tested musicians and performers… I saw the David Lee Roth incarnation of VH 3x and they were a sight to see and hear. R.I.P. Eddie Van Halen
One of my favorite references about VH, is the movie Airheads, where the guys in the band ask the FIB agent "Who did you back in the VanHalen, David Lee Roth split?" The "correct" answer was DLR.
Hey guys your reaction was 😎😎😎😎😎😎. She was like…………🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤗🤗🤗🤗🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠ahaaa she couldn’t stop moving her body. I smiled all the time watching you guys. I think you must listen the first 6 albums and can taste how different are. The creativity of the band was crazy. Was a band that were hated before they started for other musicians and critics. At the beginning no one took so seriously to Eddy Van Halen, including many virtuous guitar players, just Rob Halford said “ this guy is going to revolutionize the music “So they endured and the result was his debut album. Nick Alexi? I considering the idea to be with you guys with my air guitar with invisible strings and play many songs for the whole day. Funny 😏 Those moments reminds me 43 years ago when I started to do it with friends. You were “putting “ any note and nobody was telling you so seriously that It was wrong 😑 or isn’t, you were jamming and enjoying just what you did
Watch his solo from Live Without a Net. Most videos have it listed as Eruption live. You will see his virtuosity with the guitars. He combines almost all of his recorded solos and riffs, with a twist. It will amaze you! I love watching him play and had the fortunate opportunity to see him play 5 times! I know, not a lot but still amazing!
Wow I had forgotten about this crazy song. Best not to be driving while listening to this one! I saw Van Halen open for the Rolling Stones waaay back. It was SO loud that we had to move further back but it was wildly entertaining to say the least. Love your reaction and comments and so nice to see you Lex!💞
“Hear about it Later” is a favorite of mine off this, it sets a much different mood in both vocals and guitar play that I Love. Great reaction guys🙏🏼🌹💕
Couple of points. You are right about VH music being something everyone can like. That is why they were known as the ultimate party band. Put their albums on at any party and everyone can jam. As far as DLR vs Hager goes, you don't have to pick. I was 10 when their 1st album came out in 78' so I was the perfect ages, 10 to 16, during the Roth years and then 17 to 28 during the years Hager was with them. I was, still am, a huuuge fan and I like them both. The style is different with each and I don't think a comparison is really fair. I saw them live with both singers. DLR in 84' and Sammy in 88' and both experiences were phenomenal in it's own right. The song you chose to react to, Mean Streets, is off of probably my favorite Halen album. There is a grittyness to Fair Warning more so than other albums. I hope you choose to delve well into VH's catalog. If your a fan of Malmsteen and Vai, then you should really enjoy Eddie!
Van Halen 1980 was the first rock concert I went to and lucked out with 3rd row tickets. I was a sheltered 14 year old but worked up the nerve to ask a boy to go with me -- my older sister had to drive us. I was trying to be cool and not let on how much I liked my date. But, my poor crush was forgotten when Dave came strutting out in white leggings riding low on the abs, shirtless with furry chest (before Ken-doll manscaping became a thing), and all that beachy blonde hair flying.😅 I would love more Van Halen!
My fave Van Halen track. Just happened to listen to it in the car ( less than half an hour ago ). Fair Warning is also my fave Van Halen album. I'm fine with the Sammy Hagar stuff. There are some really good tracks with him on vocals ( Poundcake, for instance ). BUT..... the David Lee Roth stuff is, by far, my favorite stuff by Van Halen.
I'm just an all around Van Halen fan , I love Roth Hagar and heck I even like the Cherone album. When you fall in love with a band you sometimes have to roll with the changing times and be grateful for the music they gave you.
OH LORD! I just joined Patreon and to hear you talk of a full album review is making me probably too excited. It would be STELLAR!! It is such a good album that is both fun, but which also has dark - somewhat angry - undertones. It is great.
on this album, the song " one foot out the door" has one of Eddie's greatest guitar solo's, you guys have to check it out, never talked about, and the bass player Michael Anthony has a killer bass song on this album called, " Sunday afternoon in the park" killer bass song, all bass, you guys will be blown away.
THREE KEYS TO THE VAN HALEN SOUND: EDDIE’S GUITAR 🎸 ALEX’S SNARE DRUM 🥁 AND MICHAEL ANTHONY’S STRATOSPHERE BACKING VOCALS!!! VAN HALEN: I SAW ALL THE TOURS WITH ROTH FROM VAN HALEN 1 IN 1978 TO 1984 AND AGAIN IN 2013! I SAW 5150, OU812, FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL KNOWLEDGE AND BALANCE WITH HAGAR. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER EDWARD VAN HALEN!!! RIP EDDIE
First time I heard from CD (only have the LP) and I just realized how bass-driven this song is. GREAT😅 About the discussion about the singers I can say, that I like them both, it's just great MUSIC - there are other bands with 2-3 singers, where I have a ranking, not here !
If it helps in the decision who you like more David Lee Roth or Sammy, after DLR left Van Halen the first time, he went to school and eventually became an EMT in New York City. I always wondered what it would have been like to be a pedestrian in NYC who just fell off a curb and broke their leg, and when the ambulance showed up......out jumps David Lee Roth!!! I probably would have had a heart attack and died! 🤣 On a different note, it would be great to see you two react to Van Halen's debut album in it's entirety. Finally, make sure to check out the legendary video of Eddie VH's performance of "Eruption" but make sure it's the Live "Without a Net" version. It's jaw-dropping greatness.
Forgot to mention, I assume you've heard Eddie's great solo on Michael Jackson's "Beat It" from the Thriller album? There are a few clips on youtube of Eddie performing the song live with Michael Jackson.
I was 16 when I first heard this masterpiece of an album, then again with VH almost every album is good. I loved them all, and to think this is only the first track. It's great from beginning to end.The first Van Halen album from 1977 is still the best of the Roth era imo
Great reaction to this amazing song. Edwards groove with Anthony and Al are on the game in this one. It moves you. And Roth is all over this it’s him in a nutshell. My favorite part of this song is right before the solo “Dance Baby”and then Eddie goes into that swing groove. And then the solo. It’s badass!
It's very fitting that Eddie Van Halen, the King, has pretty much been responsible for launching the RUclips careers for reaction videos. I don't know if VH was the first reaction video, but I can undoubtedly say I never saw any music reaction videos before seeing a young black man react to Eddie's live solo. Since then, many new videos have popped up. And definitely, VH is THE most "reacted to" band. Original Van Halen and Eddie are very deserving of this attention, since they revolutionized rock and roll.
There’s a little bit more history he actually started out, playing the drums and his brother Alex was playing the guitar. They had switched up one day and realized that they both like playing each other’s instruments. Here’s the kicker Eddie didn’t know how to read music what he did with the guitar was a gift.
Hey Nick N Lex, I was wondering when you two would dive into VH. These guys are my favorite. Eddie was an amazing talent. R.I.P. EVH. I was lucky to have seen them in 80, 84, 86, 91, 95, 07, 12, and 15. You both will enjoy this rabbit hole. Keep up the good work.
Saw them in 79, Roth owned the stage and the event in my opinion, Sammy played a couple sets before Van Halen and he was also great, much prefer Sammy’s own stuff than his halen era , thanks y’all great having Lex back!
It's hard to comprehend Eddie playing that groove in the practice room and Roth being able to put 'THAT' verse composition over top of it. Usually it's a soloist being so opposite of what is being played.
Great reaction! I always felt or sensed that Van Halen albums each had a different Tone to the music, but each song was totally different stylistically. Just like the two songs you’ve heard from this album, both had similar guitar tone, but totally different beats and rhythms. As you work your way through their catalogue, you will get something different every single time. Love your channel guys.
i so enjoy the explanations to your reactions, so insightful! have you done a reaction to sting's bass playing in particular, esp on songs such as little wing? i'm going through all of your police/sting videos atm but i've not seen that one.
Nice. My favourite band, favourite album, and favourite song, for about 40 years now. And to this day, I still can't play the intro on guitar. sigh. Bless you Eddie.
Eddie was a phenomenal rhythm and groove player that fact gets lost with all his tapping ability….one of my favorite songs that shows this is “ little guitars” be sure to play the intro it’s his take on flamenco guitar where his right hand plays single note trill on the high E and his left hand plays the melody on the A-and D string’s using hammer-on and pull offs . Another great one is …………………“ in a simple rhyme “ a beautiful song and a rocker nonetheless
Great song with the whole package bass and drums locked in crunchy and shiny rhythm guitar riffs. DL Roth great dynamic performance. Of course the solo. 👍👍
Fair Warninig is a pure masterpiece. Underrated for years. Now quite often accepted as their best album. It still soounds so fresh. Amazing album.
Agree 100%, couldn't have said it better myself. My favourite Van Halen album and favourite solo on So This Is Love.

Full album, "Fair Warning,"......... YES!
- the Fair Warning album, was the farewell to the older classic Van Halen of so previous their albums
Van Halen was "fun music". Most of their tunes just make you smile and improve your mood. I wish there was more of that thing in modern music.
There’s a little bit more history he actually started out, playing the drums and his brother Alex was playing the guitar. They had switched up one day and realized that they both like playing each other’s instruments. Here’s the kicker Eddie didn’t know how to read music what he did with the guitar was a gift.
My favorite DLR era song!!!
I go back and forth with this one and Unchained. This one is surprisingly dark for VH, and that tone is great.
It's top shelf Van Halen.
yes! The Mighty Van Halen! The 1st 4 albums...untouchable! Please do check it out! Van Halen I, II, Women and Children First, Fair Warning......Peace!
Saw them in 79, Roth owned the stage and the event in my opinion, Sammy played a couple sets before Van Halen and he was also great, much prefer Sammy’s own stuff than his halen era , thanks y’all great having Lex back!
i thought that was you in 79 or was it 80 ?
@@markvanderstelt8999 Texas Jam 79
An all-time favorite album of mine! You will do yourself a great favor by hearing "Sinner's Swing" Jazz-metal perfection!
It's like trying a new piece of candy. And it's f...king awesome. Enjoy.
Thank you for mentioning Mighty Mouse's bass playing. He gets so overlooked in this band.
Eddie, the natural heir to Page,Blackmore and Jimi.Such a sonic pioneer bestriding the 80's hard rock landscape.
It's hard to comprehend Eddie playing that groove in the practice room and Roth being able to put 'THAT' verse composition over top of it. Usually it's a soloist being so opposite of what is being played.
Mean Street is by far my favorite Van Halen song.
the next Van Halen song to check out, the song ' I'm the one" incredible guitar playing, incredible
Eddie's guitar playing is so clear and precise
Great reaction! I always felt or sensed that Van Halen albums each had a different Tone to the music, but each song was totally different stylistically. Just like the two songs you’ve heard from this album, both had similar guitar tone, but totally different beats and rhythms. As you work your way through their catalogue, you will get something different every single time. Love your channel guys.
My favorite VH song. What a riff and tone
also check out Eddie Van Halen guitar solo called Eruption from Live with out a net, it's an oh my god live solo where you can watch his magic.
I like Van Halen with both Hagar and Roth but the David Lee years were by far my favorite.
“Hear about it later” is a great song! Might be a good one to do next fromFair Warning, great reaction as always!
I always say DLR is the greatest poet of my lifetime. Catchy, clever, hilarious, great melodies on top of what Eddie created.
“Can’t get this stuff no more “ VH with DLR was the gold standard. Exceptionally talented and gifted individuals
I knew you would love this once you finally listened to it!!!
i so enjoy the explanations to your reactions, so insightful! have you done a reaction to sting's bass playing in particular, esp on songs such as little wing? i'm going through all of your police/sting videos atm but i've not seen that one.
Nice. My favourite band, favourite album, and favourite song, for about 40 years now. And to this day, I still can't play the intro on guitar. sigh. Bless you Eddie.
Long live The Mighty Van Halen
The greatest American Hard Rock band, period.
One of the greatest opening tracks in rock history is this song.
Dirty Movies off this same album is one of my favorites. Such a cool vibe in that song,
"Take it off, take it all off "
Guys! I think you would really appreciate the live without a net eruption guitar solo for your first live performance from Van Halen😊
The mighty VanHalen is hard to beat.
- David Lee Roth, described himself once, as a Mr. Bill on acid towards his stage shows with Van Halen
People forget how great Eddie was at rhythm. Spot on.
Great reaction. Great song.
Michael Anthony very under rated Bass player
Great song with the whole package bass and drums locked in crunchy and shiny rhythm guitar riffs. DL Roth great dynamic performance. Of course the solo. 👍👍
That is some bad ass old school VH. DLR VH is the G.O.A.T! It’s dirty, raw, tough and it grinds! Try Dirty Movies
There aren’t that many bands that can sink together like this group.
Thanks, guys! Keep ging...lots of great VH tunes to discover. Also from this album.. Dirty Movies and So This Is Love are bangers. T
