After David Lee Roth left Van Halen for the first time, he went to school to become an EMT. For several years he was an EMT in New York City. Whenever I see this video and DLR as the driver of that school bus, I always wondered what it would have been like to be a pedestrian in NYC who tripped on a curb, broke their leg, and when the ambulance arrived: out jumps David Lee Roth? I probably would have just had a heart attack and died!
" I always wondered what it would have been like to be a pedestrian in NYC who tripped on a curb, broke their leg, and when the ambulance arrived: out jumps David Lee Roth?" In that scenario I'd be asking myself,..(Wait, am I in a video?)
Well not quite. After VH, he had a very successful solo career with his first 3 albums going platinum, not counting his cover album "Crazy from the heat, which he did as soon as he left VH. He didn't become an EMT until the late 90s.
I swear the 80's was the BEST time to grow up. The music, the movies, MTV, the fashion. We had it all! Before the internet, before social/unsocial media, before these electronic leashes (mobile phones) that track your every movement, before 24 hour news, before reality tv... just be yourself, make your way the best you can and live life. 9th and 10th grade Biology teacher.. Miss Patridge..South Tahoe High Class of '86 !
I was born in 1990 and even I miss the simple times of not needing phones and internet. Cant imagine how relaxing it must have been to be working without email and cell phones. Wish we could go back.
For me the thing that "makes" the solo so memorable is the video, Eddie walking across the library tables doing his thing is one of the most epic things ever.
I was born in 1973, and when this came out, we watched this video every day until MTV stopped showing it. Lillian Müller, who was Miss Norway, played the teacher in this, and she was also in Rod Stewart's "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" video a few years before this. She is now 72 and still looks great for her age. Also, in 1991 I saw Van Halen in concert at 18 years old and they were amazing! Cheers from northeast Ohio.
I was so very curious as to Alexis' reaction to this video. You have to remember, back in the day, music videos where played for MTV when they actually played music videos.
The stories I have from the 80’s as a teenage boy rocker constantly going to rock shows, arenas, clubs, outdoor venues, spending nights downtown scoring tickets, can’t even speak of them now a days. There would be investigations, arrests, etc.. lol
The "Hot Teacher" in my life ended up being my wife's maid of honor. "That Teacher" married one of the high school football stars a couple of years after graduation. It was quite the scandal early on, but people got over it. Very relatable song and brought back memories from 1975 for me when I heard it upon its release in 1984.
A simple showing of what was once fun and in no way seen as offensive. Freedom of speech and expression. Remember! I'm 57 and Burch stating that it couldn't be done today is extremely telling of what we have lost. Her face/reaction embodies the loss we have had. 🤦♂😭
some people found it offensive back then. I loved the song but found the video really inappropriate at the time. I'm 58. the mini mes were cute but the woman dancing in a bikini in front of children, just wrong. oof. hot tho she was.
Senior in high school 1984 and Sammy couldn't have directed the video, did that performance, or wrote those lyrics... while making us laugh all at the same time. Thanks Diamond Dave.
yeah with albums like OU812 and songs like Black n Blue, Finish What You Started and Poundcake to name just a couple off the top, yep that’s what Sammy did.😂
In Canada to be a teacher you need a BA usually 4 years and then 2 years of teachers college, so most Teachers are about 25 before they are eligible to teach.
The hot teacher is Lillian Müller, she's 72 now, she is a Norwegian model and had appearances in many TV shows and movies since the mid 70's and she's also a former Playboy playmate.
A good looking teacher doesn’t have to dress like that for a hormonal teen to fantasize and see her that way in their mind! It was the 80s all good, cheesy, campy over the top fun!!! Can’t take it too seriously. It was all just a party and good times! Especially Van Halen!
The popular video of the moment from Van Halen is MEAN STREET.I t offers a different kind of rumbling beneath the surface vibe that carries the churning squeal that eventually during the solo. I'm actually with you on this being my favorite Eddie solo. Actually, both the guitars and drums throughout this song may be my favorite from VH all time.
I was in 8th grade when this came out & wad a bit of a troublemaker. Our math teacher was going on vacation for a week. She told us all (me specifically) that any detentions we got from the sub would be doubled when she got back. First day of the sub, me and my friend unintentionally walked into class a minute late. When called out on that, the thought just randomly popped into my head, completely unplanned. I turned to look up at the clock, turned back to the sub and said, Aw man, I think the clock is slow. I don't feel tardy. The entire class busted out laughing. Detention #1. Later in the class the sub asked a question and, I guess following my lead, my friend Roberto raised his hand. When called on, instead of answering the question, he said, I brought my pencil. Now give me something to write on man. Again, everyone laughed. I laughed so hard I fell out of my chair. Detention #2 for both of us and #3 for leaving my chair. Doubled up, I got 6 detentions on the first day of the substitute just because an awesome Van Halen song popped into my head at a perfectly fitting time.

I hear ya Burch. Unchain The Night by Dokken is a staple for me. I had just started with the guitar when I heard that. After hearing that I wanted to BE Lynch. I practiced 8 hours a day plus homework at that time. Went on to be a reliable studio musician (guitar, bass, piano) and played with many recognizable names. Sometimes I trace it back to the excitement I felt when I heard that solo from Unchain The Night. 🍻🤟😝
You sure you didn't mince your words a bit my friend? 🤔 Personally I'd flip the script on that & say it was more so 'the night' I heard "Unchained." Just Eddie's guitar tone alone not to mention the main guitar riff on that tune. It didn't only inspire my playing it also got me a few costly speeding tickets from blasting down the highway in my '69 Camero when I had "Unchained" cranked up, no doubt. 😂😜🤣 Just saying... +Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friend+ 🤘😎🤘

Hell I found a song by 2 Live Crew called Banned in the USA that talked about free speech and the Congress when you talked about Dee going in front talking about music being freedom of speech . This is a parody of Born in the USA just cleaner then the rest of there music.
Nuno was right about Eddie being 70s, so way far back. Truth was the '80s guys had not even started really when Eddie was already doing it, but yet he is the sound of the 80s. And he had these (Nuno's crazy word for complicated but simple) simplistic yet complicated riffs, that you remember, and that still differed from anyone in the 80s. Nothing like him, because he was so much of 80s guitar, but in the late 70s even. 80s guitar was based on him Fun song too, but again very swing still even in regular timing. That was another thing about him was his swingy feel, like the one take human feel to the recordings.

@@216Numbskull lol...I get it. The VH song Unchained was my introduction to a drop D on the E string tuning of guitar. Many great things happened after that. Have a good one friend.🤟🍻
Very easily do this song today
Let's take up a collection to get this woman some new jeans
All right my flickering box... I actually believe that you could do a video like this today... And it would still be way better than this "WAP" garbage that they're putting out. Long live rock and roll ‼️🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Hell I found a song by 2 Live Crew called Banned in the USA that talked about free speech and the Congress when you talked about Dee going in front talking about music being freedom of speech . This is a parody of Born in the USA just cleaner then the rest of there music.
Ive got my PENCIL!!! 🤠
80s guitar was based on him
Fun song too, but again very swing still even in regular timing. That was another thing about him was his swingy feel, like the one take human feel to the recordings.
She needs to see all sides of Van Halen like Right now or Dreams too. Her gen she may be suprised?
In our day you had to be tough no whining or crying
