Rob Heiser it is actually a trick that Alex had created by using an electronic drum kit. I don’t know where he got the idea, so it could be to replicate a Pantera’s engine noise, but to me it always sounded like a top fuel dragster. The drum sounds on this song are samples created to replicate real snare, tom, and base drum sounds but they are activated by striking a rubber “drum head” trigger. Alex set up several triggers with slightly different base kick tones and played different time signatures using these triggers to get that cool sound. Really creative, and unless your kit is set up for these trigger sound selections, it is really hard to replicate live for other players.
I REALLY like these dudes! It seems like they are actually hearing these songs for the first time and they what's good and they are very positive. The last one is a HUGE f'cking deal right right now

When this song came out we ended up getting a substitute teacher in 7th grade that was absolutely beautiful and only about 23 or so. We had the cut up class and there were constant references flying around from the wise ass kids that thought it was over her head. I'm sure she knew exactly what we meant looking back.
I graduated from high school in 1983. There was no internet then. We went outside and partied at the beach or at pool parties all summer. Van Halen and the B-52's were the soundtrack of our summer parties back then. Damn, I miss those days.
Funny story about David Lee Roth: David Lee Roth went on tour about 10 years ago with another of Van Halen's singers, Sammy Hagar. They interviewed him and asked how they were getting along. David said "You know, Sammy is alright, but he has this thing where he thinks he's the life of the party. And that's cool. But I AM the party, so he needs to learn that." Mr. Charisma, even at his older age. -Innkeeper Vase Odin
The kids are all the younger versions of the members of the band. Waldo has no back story other than being an anxiety ridden kid who is not with the "popular" crowd.
Douglas Seebergh Love that song! I just scored tickets to their show in Houston next September. I hope they play it... with Churchill's speech intro!!!
I love the “Live After Death” version of “Aces High.” Churchill was such a bad ass. “We’ll fight them and We’ll never surrender!” And the guitars kick in. Such a brilliant idea to start the song that way. They were always good at historical songs like that. Check out the song Passchendaele. It’s about World War I and trench warfare.
Iron Maiden- 'Powerslave' or 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. Whitesnake- 'Walking in the Shadow of the Blues'. Fates Warning- 'Life in Still Water'.
I saw David Lee Roth singing for Bad Company in concert at Boise State University about 15 years ago. He was old then, I'm sure he's much older than 60 now. But even then, the concert was amazing.
VH for me was mind blowing technical music that put a smile on your face! Another master musician leaves the earth....I hope you and Neil Peart can have a jam! RIP Eddie! Gutted!
The thing a lot of people miss too is what an engineer he was. Playing aside, modded amps, invented the super strat, created the drop D tuning switch - the man had patents!
Alex Van Halen is playing swung 16th notes on the double bass for almost the entire song...it's one of the most ridonkulous drum beats I've ever heard laid down.
It was criminal that the attention David and Eddie got (even well deserved) hid the amazing talent that Alex had on drums. No doubt in top ten all-time rock drummers.
@@sterlingarcher8441 In the late 1980s, I was walking through the local county fair with my ghetto blaster playing Hot For Teacher. I suddenly heard the same rhythm from some yards ahead of me. . . it was a 'parade' of dune buggies. . . and one of them idled to the *exact rhythm* Blew my mind.
Chuck Howard Tender Surrender (live) is a better choice. It has clean jazzy parts and wild shredding and much more complex shredding than FTLOG. And has the same level of emotion. They can do that one second.
Guns N Roses - Civil War Accept - Balls to the Wall Helmet - Unsung That drum beat at the intro of Hot for Teacher alone makes this song too cool... And, DLR, "I don't feel Tardy", lol...lots of comedy in the song... it's a playlister for me. Nice choice.
I say we all keep bothering them about Cult of Personality. Its such a great freakin song like...you hear the opening guitar riff and, you're throwing up the 'devil' horns and singing aloud. Thats why I love it, cause its also very singable. Also, may have one of the best (and also my personal favorite) guitar solo EVER. Perfect mix of technical and feel. Okay, Ill stop blabbering now lol.
I haven't heard this song or seen the video in a hot minute! I forgot how funny it was 😂 "I got my....pencillllll!" Great reaction guys! How about some Motley Crue? Hmmm... maybe Wild Side, Primal Scream, Shout at the Devil.
I forgot about DLR's vocal range. He really hits that high note. You guys wanna check out some early, OG Van Halen, "And The Cradle Will Rock." Hard. And heavy.
Van Halen. Got dang. Can't go wrong with anything off 1984. Hot for Teacher is my favorite off there, but Drop Dead Legs is another with some really great riffs (who am I kidding, EVERY Van Halen riff is great). Top Jimmy is another. It was probably their biggest album (had Jump and Panama on it). Diver Down is another of their albums with zero bad songs. You guys definitely should check out Running with the Devil, too. It's the first track from their first album. Fire.
This video is a shorter version of the song. Way better without the video. Try Van Halen "mean street". Also would love to see a reaction of Dokken "kiss of death" or "In my dreams"
Just thought I'd share, I can do the Mean Street intro on guitar AND I did this pointillism of the album cover in high school: i57.tinypic.com/rmr4tf.jpg Really great vid on how to do the intro, seems like they nailed the correct way I was doing it wrong for years: ruclips.net/video/_7REzdVasTc/видео.html
I saw DLR back in 2000 when he did a club tour. Hearing his band open with this song changed my life. When the guitarist did the intro descending run and the drums and bass kicked in.........my entire insides were resonating with the bass and drums! It was borderline religious what I experienced that night! Van Halen 1984 is one of the greatest rock and roll albums of the 80’s, if not all time! And this video is just icing on the cake.
David Lee Roth is 64. He is still doing it and seems to be having fun. I saw a interview with him about a month ago. I was 25 when this song came out and it was so hilarious. But I loved their music, true professionals
Nice! Been waiting for this one. I'm surprised you didn't like it more, but glad you had fun. The video on this one is a little iffy, ha. Those drums and that opening get me every time though. Let's keep it classic. Check out Stone Cold Crazy by Queen. This one inspired Metallica and I think you'll see why. I'd also be shocked if you've never heard them, but try Deep Purple. Smoke on the Water or Highway Star. Great video as usual, guys.
keep in mind while most bands have a rhythm and lead guitarist Van Halen only had one. Eddie is playing it all. Try Jump or Panama from them or some Sammy Hagar /Van Halen Summer Nights from the album 5150

For Whom the Bell Tolls - Metallica
It's time.
Yes
Yeeeees
Uh. Absolutely. It's PAST due.
Live shit binge and purge
BLACK SABBATH NEON KNIGHTS!!!!!😈
good choice
Funny story about David Lee Roth: David Lee Roth went on tour about 10 years ago with another of Van Halen's singers, Sammy Hagar. They interviewed him and asked how they were getting along.
David said "You know, Sammy is alright, but he has this thing where he thinks he's the life of the party. And that's cool. But I AM the party, so he needs to learn that."
Mr. Charisma, even at his older age.
-Innkeeper Vase Odin
10 years ago he was back with Van Halen. that Sammy tour was almost 20 years ago
@@kevinwillson341 wow! Time flies! That's crazy,!
If you want to do VAN HALEN right you need to start at the very beginning
ERUPTION/ RUNNING WITH THE DEVIL
You listen to that and you'll know
word. check out "Running With The Devil" for sure!
They just did. Rip Eddie
you guys really need to check out "Mean Streets" by Van Halen. it's such a dirty groove, you'll love it.
My favorite Van Halen, bar none.
As a drummer I concur
The absolute best!!!! That groove is filthy!!!!
good intro, that song blows.
Yes
"Panama" by Van Halen is pretty rad.
nah... everybody wants some.
Could this be magic?
"Lifting desks up with no hands!" Right?? Shit, I was juggling those desks!! Hahaha.
lol
The kids are all the younger versions of the members of the band. Waldo has no back story other than being an anxiety ridden kid who is not with the "popular" crowd.
Alice In Chains - Would?
They may have listened to it. I know they have rooster
Yes
"Would" was a mindblower for me
Man in the box
Junkhead ,.. just epic
If you do a Van Halen song, you should do "Unchained."
David Childers why didn’t I think of that??!
The mighty van Halen.
Never ever again will there be a band like this.
Audioslave - I am the highway
The musicianship is definitely off the charts...I get pumped every time i hear it
You guys are awesome. I remember the first time I saw this video on MTV, I definitely enjoyed watching it with you two more.
Thanks!
Aces High- Iron Maiden(with Winston Churchill intro) or
2 minutes to midnight
You have fine taste my friend.
Life in still water....one of my all time favourite FW tracks.
Peace.
David Lee Roth is in fact still cool as hell.
Van Halen - Mean Street
Mean song, great at high volume in car
You guys would like Meanstreet from Van Halen's Fair Warning album. Hell, you'd like every song from that album!
RIP Eddie! Gutted!
I am still shocked ans sad. Like losing a fave Uncle😭
I said the same shit! People don't realize how far Alex went in on this song. He's as good as his brother!
It was criminal that the attention David and Eddie got (even well deserved) hid the amazing talent that Alex had on drums. No doubt in top ten all-time rock drummers.
Supposed to mimick a hot rod engine idleing. Recorded in a racketball court.
@@sterlingarcher8441 In the late 1980s, I was walking through the local county fair with my ghetto blaster playing Hot For Teacher.
I suddenly heard the same rhythm from some yards ahead of me. . . it was a 'parade' of dune buggies. . . and one of them idled to the *exact rhythm*
Blew my mind.
EVH is one of the greatest and cleanest players of all time.
For the Love of God - Steve Vai
Chuck Howard Tender Surrender (live) is a better choice.
It has clean jazzy parts and wild shredding and much more complex shredding than FTLOG.
And has the same level of emotion.
They can do that one second.
They should react to the G3 version
80's music was just fun. It brings out the best in you.
It’s inspirational
It makes you want to pick up the guitar and start a damn band
Definitely 'Mean Street' next.
Old school Van Halen, with an incredible groove. Definite playlist.
Guns N Roses - Civil War
Accept - Balls to the Wall
Helmet - Unsung
That drum beat at the intro of Hot for Teacher alone makes this song too cool...
And, DLR, "I don't feel Tardy", lol...lots of comedy in the song... it's a playlister for me. Nice choice.
if you do another Van Halen, try Mean Street. I'm sure you'll dig it.
David Lee Roth was recently on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. Interesting interview.
You guys should react to: In Living Color-CULT OF PERSONALITY
I've made the same suggestion myself a couple times.
@@NashaWriter85 I agree with all of that.
No, do Love Rears Its Ugly Head by Living Color! One of the best songs ever made! I'm sure you'll love that more
One of my favourite songs and gives some nostalgia to me.
I haven't heard this song or seen the video in a hot minute! I forgot how funny it was 😂 "I got my....pencillllll!"
Great reaction guys! How about some Motley Crue? Hmmm... maybe Wild Side, Primal Scream, Shout at the Devil.
Kickstart my heart or GTFO!
yes!!
@@youtubetrollking1880 that's a good one. I was just thinking of songs they probably hadn't heard :)
Kickstart my heart
Do Panama by Van Halen. It'll have your head bangin throughout the whole song to the steady bass drum!!
Running with the Devil
Thst song was the 2nd video after Jump... Friday night videos payed it 19 weeks in a row
Dat bridge...
I saw Van Halen 3 times in the 80's and their stage show was always AMAZING
If you love Ain’t Talkin Bout Love, ya gotta do Jamie’s Cryin
P.S. Dave is not cool nowadays, he’s a total douche
every time i see the words Jamie's Cryin, my brain immediately goes "waho whaoooo"
Lost in Vegas has came a long way 🙌🏽
SRV - Texas Flood! Or Running with the Devil if you want another Van Halen classic.
Fire.
hinney827 my fav jam is I’ll Wait
@@BRO77TX so many great ones. I've always liked Van Halen, but they've really become one of my top two or three favorites in the last few years.
DROP DEAD LEGS. Pretty smile. Hurts my head. Gets me wild.
@@Pattorihanzo did that steam, giant BUTT
This video is a shorter version of the song. Way better without the video. Try Van Halen "mean street". Also would love to see a reaction of Dokken "kiss of death" or "In my dreams"
The first six songs of "Fair Warning" is a must-listen for the Vegas guys!
Mean Streets, Hear About It Later, and Unchained are my all-time favs.
Def need to get to Dokken. KoD would be a good one.
Definitely recommend Dokken. My favorite song is “Tooth and Nail.”
Dokken: Mr. Scary (George Lynch's masterpiece)
Just thought I'd share, I can do the Mean Street intro on guitar AND I did this pointillism of the album cover in high school:
i57.tinypic.com/rmr4tf.jpg
Really great vid on how to do the intro, seems like they nailed the correct way I was doing it wrong for years:
ruclips.net/video/_7REzdVasTc/видео.html
Next Van Halen song needs to be Mean Street!
Nicholas Kent if they loved Ain’t Talkin.... can’t wait for them to hear Mean Street
Or Unchained
i agree!
What about bottoms up or take your whiskey home?
Drop dead legs...
I'd like to see your reaction to "N.I.B." by Black Sabbath or "Run To The Hills" by Iron Maiden if you haven't already.
You guys should do some stevie ray vaughan
Little wing or the sky is crying
Ooo, Billy Idol-Rebel Yell. Need to listen to it LOUD, it's a experience
They would be crying "MORE! MORE! MORE!"
white wedding?
REBEL YELL
@Alex Gibbs, so? Lol
@ they just did Hot For Teacher
David Lee Roth is 64. He is still doing it and seems to be having fun. I saw a interview with him about a month ago. I was 25 when this song came out and it was so hilarious. But I loved their music, true professionals
Man.. Its too bad you didn't do the non video version. You are missing out on the best drum intro of all time!
Videos usually ruin songs sadly. Either making the song quiet on purpose or cutting out sections
Can we get some zz top reactions?
Completely agree. Some SRV would be great too. More Texas blues!
La Grange is a good starter
My head is in missippi, rough boy, blue jean blues!
Cheap Sun Glasses by them would make a great reaction video
Mark Clark no
I think you should listen to Stevie Ray Vaughn's cover of Little Wing, it is awesome!
Oh yeah
That is my favorite version of that song.
DAMN! This brings back such GREAT memories! Retro-GREATNESS!!
What about unchained?
Yep
They did? I thought they only did ain’t talkin
Yip!!!
They did on patreon and have not released it to RUclips yet for us subscribers who do not have a patreon subscription.
I’d like to see their review of unchained also.
They did Sweet Child in Time
Good reaction as always!
Savatage- Hall of the Mountain King
Apocalyptica-Hall of the Mountain King
"I don't feel tardy"....EVH sick riffs. RIP and thanks for the great memories with your music!
keep in mind while most bands have a rhythm and lead guitarist Van Halen only had one. Eddie is playing it all.
Try Jump or Panama from them or some Sammy Hagar /Van Halen Summer Nights from the album 5150
OR Panama. EVery song off their first 3 albums is better than anything on 1984 or the shit w/ Hagar. ugh.
*I'm so afraid by Fleetwood Mac* : It's totally underrated, one of the best and most emotional rock songs and solos
David Lee Roth once worked as an EMT ( Emergency Medical Technician) in NYC in the late 90s- early 2000s!
"Unchained" from the 1981 album Fair Warning by Van Halen for playlist
Just do the entire first Van Halen album. You'll love the whole thing
Omg I laughed so hard when I heard “is that Rick Moranis?” You guys know your 80’s, I love it
do they, though? Rick Moranis was in GHOSTBUSTERS, the same year this came out. How can a kid be the accountant in Ghostbusters?
‘Cause he looks like Rick Moranis. The same way there’s a guy who lives near me who looks like Elvis. Wtf
@@angelan393 do you not understand the 30 year age difference? No matter how much he looks like him, the timeline doesnt add up.
Jason Michael Gomez Are you implying , then, that following your literal line of thinking that it’s impossible for long-dead Elvis to be living in my neighborhood? Screw your timeline- not only was Rick Moranis in Ghostbusters, but at the same time also performed in “Equine” on stage- and still had time to guest-host the Conan O’Brian show.
@@angelan393 yawn. lol.
Best line "I don't feel tardy" lol. Like wtf does tardy fee like.
@neogalford Left behind.
About 10 minutes late, stoned AF
"I don't feel dirty"
Hahaha. I was in 9th grade and my best friend and I came strolling in late to Aerospace class(yes it was offered to us) and our teacher(whom I still hear his voice) says to my buddy Jared Davis who came in first.
"Davis, do you know you're tardy?"
Jared be like "I don't feel tardy" with the shrug and all. Lol
The whole damn class just cracked up. Bunch of us dudes in class had been jamming this song from the Album 1984 along with the other songs for weeks after its release. Man those were fun times. Rip Eddie. Like I lost a fave uncle today😭
"Awww wow man. I think the clock is slowwww. I don't feel tardy. CLASS DISMISSED!!"
R.I.P Eddie Van Halen
1955-2020
One of the GREATEST guitarists of ALL TIME
passed away today 😔
Goddamnit Van Halen was fire in those DLR days.Forgive me, Lord.
Temple of the Dog “Say Hello to Heaven”
Richo Suave yes!
Hunger Strike would probably be a better introduction.
Yes
Tyfunk 02 ehh, Hunger Strike is a good song, but it’s literally Cornell and Vedder singing the same verse back to back. Say Hello to Heaven actually has deep personal meaning to Cornell and you can hear it in his vocals as it’s arguably his best vocal performance.
Four walled world
One thing you can always count on, is David Lee Roth can and will put on a show.
He was born a showman.
So cool you guys went to your first metal show! Props for taking the next step! Mastodon rules live!
