What a superb songwriter you are Mr McAloon! Profoundly in love with your music and your silky voice since 1982. Too much sophisticated for general public, I’m sure you know you have the unconditional recognition from many and many who dislike mediocrity and lack of beauty. Thank you Prefab Sprouts❤️
My late mum said theres a song that a band sung on some morning show that struck her, she was mad into opera . I saw this and smiled . I loved her even more
So relate to this song, she was beyond special to me yet she is so better off without me & made something of herself with a family & a husband that adores her....yet here I am that misses her every second & wishes I vould be him after 27 years on.Never loved anyone more than her & never again.
I completely got in shock when I heard this for the first time. Still got the chills. What a fantastic song. So classy. How luck I am to have lived this thru the years. Thank you PS
1997 was the first year at the university for me. This song was very popular back then and played regularly on television. This was a time when music videos was the main means of promoting music. I had never heard of Prefab Sprout before but this song opened my eyes (or ears), and I listen to them still to this day. Thank you Prefab Sprout for making the world and life more beautiful. Can't believe it's been more than fifteen years ago, feels like it was yesterday. A prisoner of the past indeed!
A Prisoner Of The Past I'm a ghost to you now, I'm someone you don't really wish to see I'm a ghost to you now, a shadow since you turned your back on me Maybe you'll learn why it was I shook Baby your turn to wear the haunted look This ghost is here to stay I survived the blast Get ready, get ready to say I've found my niche at last A prisoner of the past Anywhere that you go, I'm going to be the welcome there for you Everywhere that you go, be certain that the table's set for two Maybe you'll learn, there's nowhere you can go Baby you'll turn, as white, as white as snow This ghost is here to stay I survived the blast Get ready, get ready to pay I'm taking you at last A prisoner of the past This ghost is here to stay I survived the blast Get ready, get ready to pay I'm taking you at last A prisoner of the past
Jeez, If i play this once, then i have to play it 8/9 times on a loop, it brillant, & Beautiful, Paddy Macaloon is an amazing songwriter, & seems to be able to tap into something that pulls you in, Fantastic, he has written too many great songs to mention.
Adding to a comment I made. After listening to this song many times the words and theme are just so good and clever. This is just so real. To the person doing the dumping, their ex is now nothing but a ghost, a memory or something that you don't want to see. For the dumped, the ex is very much still there and they are following them in their minds, much like a ghost would do. Yet another example of why Paddy Mcloon is a genius songwriter. 😮
Brilliant.. I play this at full bore on the car stereo in the MX5 as we nip down to the coast with the roof down and its one of the simple pleasures of what we call 'life'..
we should all feel privileged to have home grown bands who have left there magical mark in our hearts! this is pure genious, so much talent, happy innocent memories 😘
Had not heard this one before even being a huge sprout fan. What a fantastic song and blows away that passes as pop nowadays. How could people not love this?
Quite possibly my favourite intro of all time and one which always puts a smile on my face, particularly as I know a great song is about to follow.....
Absolutely fantastic ! When I'm Listening to this I even cry of pure joy and happiness. One of the all time greatest : PREFAB SPROUT Thank you for all the music.
I have to bring up both the live(lottery) performance and this one in order to connect me with all that is good. The many blasts that I did not survive, though I finally made it through, is for me the key to this most classic of songs by anyone.
Drums straight from the Beach Boys' "Don't Worry Baby" which in turn is a tribute to the drums on the Ronette's "Be My Baby". The story line, though, is like a harder edged version of Jerry Butler's "Never Gonna Give You Up".
Unlikely, noone can replace this void...He had been the Fred Astaire of words, no need to describe this unique melody vein.We have been so priviledged to fill our lives with Paddy's expressions. But we always want ...more.
La musique de Prefab Sprout a changé ma vie..... La beauté absolue dispensée à toutes celles et tous ceux qui ont bien voulu prendre le temps d'apprivoiser la musique de Paddy MacAloon...Qui devient dès lors essentielle.....
As in "The sound of crying",Paddy,we are both prisoners of the Past.Sometimes, extremely rare cases, both lost everything .and sometimes, life gives us something else to make up for that lack that we may never be able to fill but we have to move forward and find real reasons to be happy anyway.
Paddy does pick some lovely ladies - like those in 'If you don't love me.' This one seems to have lost her shoes around the house somewhere - then recruits a large search party?
not a bad compliment if this is from the master that is sir paul.......................in a interview on newsnight mc aloon stated paul mc carthy as a major influance on him also in the same interview and the reporter asked paddy about tom jones and the devil suddenly the lights in the room went out all started laughing........................great stuff thanks
The other night i dreamed that I saw a younger Paddy sitting on a bench in a smoky bar back patio, silently watching everyone. it was very vivid and profound.

Unbelievable song writing, arrangement and voice - please come back Prefab Sprout / Paddy McAloon!
Paddy has walked away, so we must be grateful for the diamonds he has left us, and cherish them forever.
@@ericrose3877 3 years ago he wanted Trevor Horn to produce some demos. Hopin' that happens someday
@@petermcguiness1055 I certainly hope so. Paddy has created an army of Prisoners of this song's eternal past.

Paddy’s music has helped me out of more holes than I care think about. Love this band so much ❤️❤️❤️
What a beautiful description. Digging it.
Andromeda heights must be one of the most underrated albums in the history of popular music.
Yep. Like loads of others.
Agreed - i think this is their best album, tho i really like Jordan.
@@thomasaquinas1025 Andromeda........lifetime forever. Ty for your comment...
NOT. vacuous rubbish more like.........as per original reviews...........
It might, the thing is that this that type of comment is such a cliché that the few instances where it is true, it fails to make a point.
One of my all time fave bands!
me too
Paul McCarthy
Love of mi life...!!
J'adore toujours autant ce groupe , même en 2019 😎😎😎♥️♥️♥️

Perfection in song writing is rare .prefab sprout nailed it with this modern masterpiece
They nailed in about 90% of their songs ❤

Arguably one of the 5 best songs of PS, along with Earth, the Story so Far, Cars & Girls, Nightingales and Blue Roses.
He has a lovely voice , of all bands I've listened to , well , it's just pure joy to listen to Prefab Sprout !
