Rebuilding a boat! Engine, Cockpit and Drilling through the hull. ***EPISODE 31***

  • EPISODE 31
    Time to meet the newest member of the Family!! "KODA"
    In this episode we begin the process of connecting up the engine while we still have plenty of space inside the boat. Some of the components, like the water lock exhaust system are going to be fitted behind but also below the engine, so while the area is free of other systems or components i've decided to get a few things fitted now, making the job easier now rather than having to do it later.
    I also begin the task of building the cockpit well. Templating and dry fitting all to satisfaction, it's time to get the last of the superstructure fitted closing off the deck!!

    As always Finn, great job.
    You are probably going to do it anyway, but I will mention it.
    Two hose clamps per joint on a boat that has water running through the pipe. Well that's what my apprenticeship called for.

    You might want to add an additional locking nut next to the one on the end of the throttle cable to prevent the nut from vibrating off at an inopportune time.

    A little late to this party but, excellent work Finn. As one who watched you with Leo on Tally Ho, and since here, I have to comment on your attention to detail. Moving the throttle cable on the engine was inspired. If I may give my tuppence-worth. I would double nut lock the nut at the end of the throttle cable on the engine, to stop possible vibration making it loose.

    What I really like about Finn, is the way he approaches everything, neatly, methodically, and precisely, not least, how he comes across as a focused all-round nice young guy, who endeared us all, - right from the first "meeting" when working on Tally-Ho, and now to follow him via his great videos on his own boat back home in the UK is fantastic. Well done, Finn, from New Zealand.

    The old trick to quickly cut through the reo was to use a stick welder on high amperage. It would just cut straight through with minimal heat to the hull. Just don't set the shed on fire😁😁 Lovely work! Greetings from down under👍.

    Coming on nice.
    Have you seen Sailing Magic Carpet, their refit? He had some good ideas to prevent water penetration through the screws and fittings getting into the deck by drilling and filling with epoxy holes, then screwing into these with smaller diameter screws than the epoxy plugs. Also glassing over the end grain joins between. Did the same for any deck gear, windows fixed into any wood. May be an idea to make some sort of flange to protect the exhaust through hole, water always condenses out and runs down the pipe, gets into the wood. Double clip all pipes, hoses, learnt that one the hard way, lots of swearing and wet feet!

  • @peterheiberg566
    @peterheiberg566 Год назад +3

    Great video as usual. Having a teak grate in your cockpit is the best way I know to accumulate all sorts of filth and crap, bits of food, anything you drop ends up moldering there and ultimately getting caught in the drains. When you drop anything small it’s impossible to recover without lifting up the whole grate which invariably then scratches the varnished sides of the cockpit. Much better I think to have just a non skid cockpit sole. But then what do I know?

    Just a quick comment, I'd advise using a router to round off the edges of any holes through bulkheads as otherwise over time vibration will cause the edges to chafe away whatever is running through the hole. Your flexible hose for example. And yes, I know this from experience !

    Finn, think your decision for only 1inch pipe to drain the cockpit needs a rethink. If you get some waves into the cockpit, you're going to need much larger holes to more quickly drain away the water. Refer RUclips: Lahakai Sailing experience.
