This is why when I retired I said I will not store anything. I've spent my whole life doing stuff like this and won't do it again. We moved to a house with no basement and I keep nothing in the garage or shed. I downsized Christmas decor to fit on a closet shelf and sold all the bins/totes on Facebook.
You are my hero..lol..I am working on doing the same but sometimes it feels endless! We combined two big houses, thought we downsized like crazy when we moved to Florida and I still have a hoarders pantry, barn and garage I’m working through. It must have multiplied like guppies when we weren’t looking 😂😂😂
@@poodlegirl55wow thanks for the motivation! I sometimes think back to how hollow our small newly-wed home sounded in that first month, and now 14 years on why do we have so much stuff 🙈 Thinning out is indeed difficult, but I'm grateful to be getting better at parting with things, trying to be realistic with what I choose to keep. It also translates into living a better example for our kids, to want/acquire and keep only what's necessary and serves a purpose. Seeing my donation boxes slowly fill up is a joy.
Thank Kenobi for me - I was laughing so hard when he came back with his toy instead of helping you remove that thing, so my husband had to see what was so funny. He loved it! Kenobi is one of a kind!
Accomplishments don’t always have to be pretty. Congrats on tackling a big job and getting it completed! We’re in the middle of remodeling part of our old farmhouse and I feel ya on all the chaos…it gets very trying at times, having things from other rooms all over my house. I just have to keep reminding myself that it’s gonna be so worth it when we’re done. 😊
I love how Kenobi offered you his toy, maybe to quell your fears?? The basement, is looking so good, and so happy, to see the finished clear out!! The DDD works..you rock!! I would be so emotional lol Have a great weekend everyone !
I agree! Seeing you hold the long cushion(?) up the stairs, Kenobi appears, assesses the situation, returns with a long toy of his own ... as if he wanted to join in and do what his Mama was doing too! 😂🤣😂🤣 Sweet boy!!! ❤️✨
Awesome job! Glad to see Kenobi got into the spirit of moving things around. My cellar went on a similar journey a couple of years ago. If you are interested, my next steps after organizing were: 1) Shop vac ceiling, walls, floors 2) wipe down anything that's still gritty, including windows 3) Bag anything not in a plastic tote. I like the xl clear bags. They keep the dust off stuff you don't want to keep cleaning (especially textiles, knick-knacks, lamps) and keep the musty smell down. Add dryer sheets, laundry scent pellets, or litter box scented baking soda in the bottom of the bags. 4) 2 dehumidifiers - in the damp season, they fill twice a day! It was an absolute game changer for the damp smell 5) Ready... Cheap mop and pail with lots of cleaner and bleach - just a quick go 6) Then, I painted the walls (no fuss) a pale blush pink (don't laugh, it's bright and cheerful) and the floors a beachy grey-blue (absolutely no prep). You have to see it to know what a difference it makes! I used good paint with primer included, meant for damp spaces. 7) I (my hubby actually - his one contribution to the project) spray foamed around the windows to keep the draft and bug entry to a minimum 8) Finally, I got some plug in mouse-and-bug-be-gone thingies. The emit a sound (undetectable to humans and safe for pets) that says 'no trolls or spiders allowed!' My soul feels better now and it's much easier to maintain because I don't need therapy every time I go down there ;)
My husband and I watch you every Saturday morning while eating breakfast and this video had us laughing hysterically. He was like, “it’s just a normal basement!” Hahaha. Also the part with the flickering light omg 😂
I'm pretry sure one more reason for Geoffrey to refuse to "help" with the cellar/basement is his height ; he'd end up hunching over all the time 😂 (And I'm with Kenobi on this one : the place is too creepy to get down there, you & Holly are really brave 👀)
Even though it was downstairs, and you don't always see it, you'll still feel a weight lifted, because it is an emotional and spiritual release. There's the stress of unconsciously knowing it needed to be cleaned. Whatever you do Dani, is always a delight! You bring life into life! Can't wait to watch the garage in process. All that you and Geoffrey will be doing - WOW! Great you two can work together. You are just an adorable couple and Kenobi is a DOLL! (No mama, that's just too big of a toy, I like mine better! Will you come and play with me?!!). 😘 💕💕💕💕
Thinking about doing a dreaded task is 99 percent of the time way worse and way harder than actually doing the hard task .💛 i laughed so hard when you said " I cant tell if its creepier now or before i put up the lights. "😂 My garage is on my to-do list Thank you for the boost !!
You Go, Girl! Before the pandemic, I started going through **years** of stuff I had lugged around through many moves, and ended up filling well over 20 plastic construction waste bags with give away items such as bedding, clothing, etc. Then there were the boxes. I didn't count them, but at least few trunk loads in an suv worth of those. I'm still not finished with this process, but huge hurdles have been made. You see, my mum is a hoarder, and now has Alzheimer's. My brother and SIL tackled her debris a few years ago. I decided that I didn't want to go the path my mum took, and certainly didn't want to leave all this shite for my son (or hubby) to deal with when I'm ill/old/dead. I have been teaching myself to not hold on to things, but also, not to replace things I've let go of. It's a huge issue for anyone with these tendencies, and requires lifelong vigilance. Thank you for sharing your decluttering, Danie.🖤
We had community cleanup today. Free dumpsters. My spare room and junk closet and behind the shed got hauled off. Now I'm putting in washer pits for the summer games. It's 62 degrees out, sunny and breezy. Gorgeous out.
OMG Danie! When I was a kid we went to the dump once a week in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and my dad would make us sing "to da dump! to da dump! to da dump dump dump!" LOL! I also feel that getting rid of stuff makes your brain and mood lighter, So I'am glad you were able to clear so much. 😊
Well yes, for a basement it's not too great, but what it really is is a nice deep crawlspace. Some people only have about 3'-4' under their house to access pipes, storage, etc. So for a crawlspace, this is a masterpiece!
What can I say? This video helped me tackle my living room after we moved a piano into it. 😂 Watching Danie and Friend tackle the trolls and spiders was…inspidering! 🕷️🕸️🕷️
This was a video I didn't know I needed. It hits very close to home, since I also live in 100 year old house with unfinished basement in Canada. Have anyone noticed that green paint on the wall behind one of the wooden shelfs? I did! I have a wall exactly like that, same green paint, same wooden shelf. Luckily my basement is little dryer and I run a dehumidifier there in the spring. But it needs a good clean out. Maybe next weekend.
I had to smile when I saw the basement. It reminded me of my grandma's 130 year-old farmhouse. Cobbled walls, concussion-level beams and ductwork, musty dark corners. She had a root cellar, too, though, which was amazing for extra food storage!
This was a perfect video for today, because I was just given a brand new storage shelf to replace the old piano that was finally removed from my (finished) basement, so now I'm doing a basement clean, too! Unfortunately, I feel like I found almost as many spiders hiding in my hoard as you did in your creepy cellar. Spiders truly don't give a F... where they live, do they? 🕷️💥 (Where's the flamethrower emoji when you need it??) ~ I LOVE those special garage light bulbs. They're definitely ugly, but OH, BOY, do they light up a space! I especially like that you can point them in different directions to get those dead corners. Win win! ~ I'm both surprised you are planning to DIY so much of the garage, and not surprised at all by the fact. Having grown up in a home that was mostly a DIY project for my parents, I know how frustrating it can get that it will take so much longer than you hoped it would to "just finish the @#$& thing!!" You and Geoffrey (and anyone else you get to help you) will be in my thoughts as you take this massive garage build! 🤞🍀🌠🫂❤️
Obsessed with your videos ❤ I've also been in a slum so i haven't been watching TV... but yesterday I sat and watched like 12 episodes in one sitting 🤭🤭🤭 so excited to see what comes for your home this summer!!!!
I would love a basement, and seeing your gorgeous wood panelled and stone walls down there is making me drool. It may be dark and dingy, but a beautiful dark and dingy. Great job Danie and friends.
I'm so glad your dump has hazardous waste management for paint. Our city coordinates with surrounding cities to have monthly hazardous round ups. It's so important to keep all toxic materials out of our dumps! Thanks Dani.😁😘🤗
Well done Danie! It’s something many of us have on our to do lists and just put off. I am much older than you and when I was a kid, we loved to go to the dump! It was the restore! We would scramble all over the piles of stuff to find new treasures! You brought back fond memories!
I love that Kenobi loves his stuffy❤🥰 OMG, Danie...my stomach hurts from laughing!!! What "sparks joy" for you in your cellar??😂🤣😂 The after is an amazing change🥂👏👏👏
Great work, Danie!! That for sure is NOT a fun project, yet I feel your satisfaction at what you've accomplished. Way to go! ♥♥♥ (Gotta love how helpful Kenobi.....isn't. LOL)
I'm not stressed.....I love sorting and organizing ! I wish I could come help you. I live in Texas , close to the coast so we don't have basements. But...we have attics , crammed full of stuff from 45 years ago. During COVID I cleaned out everything, nothing left in the attic !
Creepy job perfectly well done! Also thanks for remind me of MY basement room, into which I currently can step in, one step and the rest is ... well, stuffed with stuff. Should clean that ASAP. And I will, bravely, as you did! 🥰🫡
My last home was over 130 years old, and had a gross, dingy, scary basement. And it was as messy as yours was. Our new house has no basement, so our rented storage unit is now a hot mess, lol. Congrats on getting yours organized and more functional!
I always bring a swiffer duster when I need to find something in the far back corners of my house. Use it to get all the cobwebs before I reach my hand in.
Your basement looks so good now! You might think it does not look like much but that was a lot of work you got done there! Including "just" getting started!
Yes!!!! I feel you girl! I have such anxiety when I go in our basement. There is so much that needs purging. Generally I just turn around and get nothing done. I need to act like an elephant....one bite at a time.
I have to do the same thing … But my hoarder space is a crawl space so the best I can do is crawl into the opening and haul things out on my hands and knees. It’s so dusty in there…….we crammed as much as we could in there during our renovation and now it’s on my “to do” list to sort out…….I’ll watch you do it first and see if it motivates me to get it done!
if you would like it to make nicer, there are very nice paints for industry floors that are waterproof and anti-slippery. I have used it on my balcony before putting tiles and I was really happy with it
Wow, so needed this video. You made it jist for me. Thank you. I am feeling overwhelmed with what I have to do. My husband is undergoing bone marrow transplant soon, so we have to rip out all the carpet (thankfully just the 2nd floor, 1st is all hardwood) and get a vinyl flooring installed for easier cleaning purposes. That is three bedrooms and a very large FROG (Family Room Over the Garage) full of things I need to pack up. I am beyond stressed and feel like i just don't know how to begin. But your parting words of "Dani says to just do it" is motivation.
You are delightful ! I'd watch you clean anything and enjoy every minute of it !! You did a great job.....now come clean out my frightful basement with all measure of junk and stuff that hasn't found a home yet. Enjoyed this!!
This is like the opposite of an ASMR video in the best of ways. So proud of you, this had to get done and it looks so good! And now I'm inspired again to tackle our hoard-y garage because it may be messy, it may have spiders, but at least it's a garage with windows so it's not super dark too!!
I loved this! And I love that you shared it with us! There’s nothing more satisfying than getting that pesky place sorted! Except, perhaps, watching the lovely Super Dani getting her pesky place sorted!! WOOHOO!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I need some of those tins. Been collecting a few here and there for my downstairs bathroom and the hallway to the bathroom. It’s so cool! I’m so proud of you for decluttering.😊
I just did the same thing although, I don’t have a basement but I do have a junk area that was driving me crazy and you’re right the freedom that you feel when you get rid of all this junk. I had a full huge closet worth of stuff and then another area that was just stuff that one I didn’t ever use it to some of it I didn’t even know I had so free at last I’m feeling you girl.😂
How creepy and fun at the same time! And you have a lot of work on that garage! But I have faith in you two. My Dad built 3 of the houses we lived in. The last one he built after work at the age of 50 or so. He was not a builder by trade. It was amazing to watch a building become a house over time!
Great inspiration Danie! You owe Jess a beer! And hot shower after work in in the dungeon. When that box fell apart, I literally bust out laughing! Made my Saturday. Reminds me I need to get a new light for that one room in my basement...and spray for icky bugs!
I also have an unfinished dungeon. From April through November, I have 2 dehumidifiers going; really prevents that musty odor from building up. However, they don’t do ANYTHING about the crap that needs to …..GO!!!!!!
I just enjoyed a LOT this video. It felt like getting some of your you "funny and free" you in this surprising "around the corner" video. It felt really good ! I had a big smile all along !! I love you Danie ! And guess what, I also laughed because I happen to have cleaned my own basement just a few weeks ago, and I confirm, it felt really really great ! For my part I wanted not to chase the spiders or trolls, but I wanted to go more than 90% of a project for once. Don't ask me "why the basement", it just happened to be it. I also have other projects to tacle and I am as usual grateful to know I'll be able to keep watching your videos that help me so much to get and keep motivated ! I "make it messy" and "trust the process" ! Thank you ! 💌
It is so satisfying, I had ended up with alsorts & had a purge last week so now my space & brain are a little clearer & other rooms are on the hit list for soon.
So excited to see a video this early! I have been working Saturday for the last three months and miss watching first thing in the am on Saturdays. ❤ can’t wait for the garage/workshop uploads!
🎉well in between watching this whole video I finally emptied out my attic after about a year and a half or a little more and now I can move 🎉 ty Danie❤❤❤
Thank you Danny for your outstanding personality creativity I appreciate you doing your basement, it encouraged me to tackle my dining room which looked like your basement I think I might tape it never know I might be a RUclipsr one-day who knows it's all going to work out
Oh gosh Danie, you did a great job organizing that basement, it is looking so much neater and you can see all that you have that is good to use. And I have to be honest, I really hate spiders and will kill them when they scare me if they look like a dangerous one. Also basements can have the creepy areas, and that lighting really got rid of those creepy areas. I am also so excited to see that garage build, and do understand that you doing all of that work will for sure save you a lot of money. So fun that you have a CD player that does work, my car had one but then my son bought me a new stereo that is the size of a tablet, it was my birthday and Mother's Day present and it also has a backup camera. Thanks so much for this wonderful video that does give me inspiration to get busy cleaning and organizing my shed area. I wish you a blessed rest of your weekend, sending love and hugs, bye! 😂😉🤗👏🙌🙏👍💜💜
I am working on 25 years of shizzel in my basement. It takes a weight off your shoulders to purge and organize. You might want to consider bug repellent plug ins for the basement. It helped in my bathroom. Won't get rid of all of the bugs but will help cut down. My bathroom is small & I rarely see bugs any more.
This is why when I retired I said I will not store anything. I've spent my whole life doing stuff like this and won't do it again. @Patrice A Roth keep at it. It took me three years but was worth it. The more you purge the easier it gets.

Organizating a cludder room can help lift your spirits. Happy you got that done🎉. 🎉😊
I loved this! And I love that you shared it with us! There’s nothing more satisfying than getting that pesky place sorted! Except, perhaps, watching the lovely Super Dani getting her pesky place sorted!! WOOHOO!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
You just made a basement make-over fun... that's pretty unbelievable! And good job. Love how Kenobi was helping you. 🥰
We all have a basement/ garage/ closet that needs a major clean up. I’m inspired
This was so satisfying to watch and really motivating for the less clean jobs that are a bit harder
Kenobi!!! Trying to get stuff out, he brings back a toy!!! sooooo cute!
It looks great! You and Jess did an amazing job.
How creepy and fun at the same time! And you have a lot of work on that garage! But I have faith in you two. My Dad built 3 of the houses we lived in. The last one he built after work at the age of 50 or so. He was not a builder by trade. It was amazing to watch a building become a house over time!
There's something about spring that gives us all the buzz to clear out stuff. Xxx
OMG, that was always my favorite time. I used to sing the dump song.
Love it rocking an LL Bean old school flannel pattern.
You must be really satisfied with the result. Pat on the back for you both. Great Job👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Wow, I see a few things in your basement that I would use, the lanterns, the mirror and the trellis! Great inspiration video to start cleaning.
Thank you for motivating me to start my basement clean up I've been putting it off for months!!
This is the best video! Truly hilarious. Kenobi "helping" finished me. dead.
I feel your pain I have so much to clean up in my garage. You have motivated me. 🤩🤩🤩
That outlet strip was perfect for all your lamps! 😂
Serious inspo!!! Heading into my hoarder room to clean it out now! Thanks Dani 🥰
Loved the "cleansing" of mind, soul and body with the D.D.D.❤❤❤...great video...as usual!!!!😉
oh dear, I have to clean up my attic so bad. Have been procrastinating for years... thanks fo pushing us to finally tackle it
Love everythung about your outdoor renovation! 👍😊🇨🇦❤️
Thank you Danny for your outstanding personality creativity I appreciate you doing your basement, it encouraged me to tackle my dining room which looked like your basement I think I might tape it never know I might be a RUclipsr one-day who knows it's all going to work out
All I can say is you totally make me smile and I feel your pain. ❤
I love a good cleanout. Because in the end, it makes you feel like you have achieved so much. Keep up the good work 👏
Oh gosh Danie, you did a great job organizing that basement, it is looking so much neater and you can see all that you have that is good to use.
As someone who also has an old dank basement I appreciate this. Nice to see I am not alone
