  • In this video I make a restoration of a vintage WW2 Rolex Speed King watch that came in a metal box from someone that I know. The condition of the watch was bad and quickly I realized some parts were broken.
Buy a print of this Rolex movement:
At 23:36 The print can be bought without a frame (limited quantity). Contact via mail (see contact info) or / watcheyesone
It's a manual watch (you wind it via the crown). The movement is called cal. 710 (10.5 Hunter). This video is only ASMR.
The information I got from the owner of the watch is that it was bought from an old watchmaker that stored the watch in this box, maybe he wanted to repair it in the future but after a while sold it.
After the restoration the Rolex watch runs around +/- 20-30 per day which is stated by the timegrapher and the amplitude is around 250-300 degrees. For this watch I think it's approved as it says on the movement it's only adjusted in two positions.

    Timegrapher*: amzn.to/3xE2oT4
    Work:
*Disassembly of the watch and check for problems along the way
*Inspection of all parts if they are worn or broken via the microscope. Here we found that there was 2 worn holes, too much wobble. The balance staff was broken and the regulator pins under the balance bridge and a driving wheel was out of round etc.
*Manual cleaning, pre-cleaning, I do this with Rodico (Bergeon), some toothpicks, pegwood and with IPA (isopropyl alcohol). Then after pre-cleaning I let all parts be in benzine and later a double bath of IPA (Isopropyl alcohol) for rinsing. The pallet fork gets a benzine bath and a Epilame treatment, balance wheel will only be cleaned with benzine.
*Cleaning the hour/minute hands and the dial, repaint the hour/minute.Cleaning the casing etc with an ultrasonic machine.
*Assembly and oiling all relevant parts
*Dynamic poising to find any heavy points on the balance wheel and checking with the timepragher

I got the honor from someone I know to restore this watch. He bought it by an old watchmaker in this metal box and the condition of it was unclear.
We thought that all parts was in the box but I had to do some more investigation to be sure. I read that Rolex during this period of time could have unique parts, it can be impossible to find spare parts even if you have the correct movement number. Every bridge in this watch had a unique number and luckily all bridges had the same number!
I started to unfold every part in the metal box, check for damages and if all parts fits togheter. There were broken parts that I needed to order and fix.
You see me test the watch before fixing new regulator pins. I first wanted to test the balance as free sprung and regulate it with the mean time screws on the balance wheel but as you saw this was not enough (regulating with mean time screws was not shown in the video).
Please note the dial washer was installed up side down, I needed to make a new dial washer as the one In the video was to tiny, so that one got installed correctly.
In the end all of the parts turned out to match each other and the result was good I think, hope you like it!

Strictly amazing! I enjoy the "disassemble / clean / reassemble" type video, I've never seen such detail to build from disassembled parts, broken parts, bent parts, unbalanced parts, loose parts, wobbling parts, up-and-down travel, etc. All the ASMR was a nice touch, too!

A lot of things in this video that I've read about in manuals but never actually seen done before. The poising part being one. Also very jealous how easily you restaffed the balance. Mine usually end up with the arms bent enough to look bad. Bending those back close to straight is always a pain for me. Very nice video, thanks!

What a maintenance job! One of the best, if not the best, video on the net for vintage watch lovers and collectors.
Where are you based? I have a pair of watches in the need of TLC and I will be honored to put them in your capable hands
