I can’t stop listening to this track. That feeling when you first hear something like this.. you only need a few seconds to know you’ve struck gold & it never gets old.
That is exactly how I felt when I heard it for the first time a couple of months ago!! Just brilliant - such a pity is was never actually released on Vinyl.
Never thought in a million years i would prefer a version of a song over a song recorded by the Four Tops but this version by the Contours or whoever it is just the best ever. How this didn't get releaded is beyond belief but weve all said that a few times. Fantastic!!!
How long since you heard this? Can't have been more than 15 years as that's about when it was released.. And it's still not certain it's the Contours.. No one knows for sure..
I'll say that I think this is an absolute belter of a tune, and arguments might rage over who it is, so I'll put down what I know and people can make up their own minds.. In the 80's a Motown collector purchased a number of acetates and tapes that had been retrieved from the Woodward building in Detroit. The tracks on the tapes were by various artists and were what are known as 'safety copies' .. meaning you could listen to them but weren't able to move them on as they had 'bleeps' superimposed on the tracks at regular intervals throughout the songs. From what I know these were tapes that writers or producers could take home to listen to and had therefore left the 'security' of the tape library and studio. One of the songs on these multi-artist tapes was ' I Can't Stop This Feeling'. The tape was damaged on the intro but recovered in time before the main vocal started. A number of the long-time Motown collectors listened to it and the conclusion was that it must be a demo, probably by the writer or a random singer, as opposed to any known Motown artist. Someone gave a copy to Ian Levine. who was very excited by it. He 'repaired' the damage by doing a piano studio overdub and proclaimed that it was a Contours recording and he knew because he had worked with them and knew their voices up close and personal, so in his mind there was no doubt. That is hard to disagree with, but of the many Motown experts who listened to the track, only Ian believed it was the Contours.. Most of the experts other than Levine think its more likely that the writer is the singer ... A few believe it could be James or William Weatherspoon.. I have no idea who it is, but its a gem whoever recorded it..
This was recorded in late 1968 and by that time the Contours weren’t recording. The track was cut for the Four Tops and their version got released a few years ago. This is likely a demo vocal by one of the songwriters/producers. But it never was associated with the Contours.
That singer is DEFINITELY NOT William Weatherspoon. I don't know what James Dean's voice sounded like. But, this is a big mystery, as I, too, would have guessed that this was a demo probably sung by one of the writers. But not all Motown artist demos were sung by the writers. They often got an in-house friend, who was a contracted singer to sing them.
totally agree, I played it for Joe Billingslea and asked him about it and he'd never even heard it before, I even suggested they recorded it now (they (present lin up)still sound that good) Personally if I was JB I'd have said "yep! that was us" :) but you think someone somewhere would have found out by now. Super choon imho
That's because Levine added that piano and base beginning, because the recording that reached the UK (and the original found demo) had the intro and beginning cut off.
That voice was not a late '60s Contor, or any Contour I ever heard. It is also NOT William Weatherspoon's voice (very far off). It's someone I've never heard. The songwriters didn't always sing their own demos, even though Weatherspoon sung several of Dean and Weatherspoon's songs. Sometimes they just picked a friend at Motown who could sing, or even a friend from outside the company, if they though t he or she could do a good job on that particular song.
Deffo no way in hell its the contours , no backing vocals just lead singing throughout , blows my mind lavine even contemplated it was or could be the contours . Foolish at best mr lavine

William weatherspoon perhaps?

Agree..collecting since late 70s/earl 80s..from the vault as Motown left Detroit..
Who cares,a absolute classic

I'd also like to know which Contour could have been singing this. It doesn't sound like ANY of the late '60s Contours I remember.

ITs not the contours but a 1 off recorded vocals for Motown by an unknown artist.
I dont believe it's the Contours either. It's just not their sound. Still thinking on it.Gem. HX
Sounds like the Isley Brothers.

There is a suggestion that it might be The Monitors but on the master tapes it was credited to The Contours
I think it is Richard Street but not sure great tune though, can't stop this feeling no matter how I try!

@@petewelbourn3380 good luck hard 1 to find now
Rams the floor . Great Spinners track . It's not the Contours . Same as Girl Crazy ain't Sharon Soul . It's GiGi Jackson without Charmains .
This has got Levine's name written all over it. The opening riff is almost identical to his Sidney Barnes - Standing on Solid Ground.
That's because Levine added that piano and base beginning, because the recording that reached the UK (and the original found demo) had the intro and beginning cut off.
Are you sure.He has done a remake of it A while ago
With One of his lady singers can't remember her name but it was Awful.
Lofl lavine couldn't compose this , thats a mental suggestion at best , he doctored the start , you know just to get an angle on it .
Is it a Dean and weathers poon song?
Sell me a boot please..!!
doesn't sound like anything else The Contours ever did so not sure its them..

Ps , just shows how out of touch berry gordy was , when he cast aside proper talent .
