Great video as usual, Gary. I use images in cells often when I have inventories that need to be conducted. It helps people to identify the items that they are going to sign for when there’s a picture to go along with the serial number.
Thanks for this video. So, just to be clear, there is no way to programmatically add images into a cell like we can with Google Sheets =Image() function?
After you place an image inside a cell, in addition to resizing the image, can you also move it around inside the cell like you can inside a shape? Or is it only centered?
Hi, Gary. I started an art inventory spreadsheet last year, with a row for each painting. The left column holds a thumbnail images for each painting. The thumbnail images are not anchored at all, and this is becoming unmanageable. How do I bring it in as an image fill? (I don't want to go hunting all over my image files in my computer; is there a way to copy the unanchored photos and insert them so they are anchored into the cell?) Or, do I give up and buy Excel? (Truth be told, I find Numbers very unintuitive and harder to manage than Google sheets or Excel.)
Gary, could you help me please? I am doing the exact same type of spreadsheet with a photo of a painting on each row. I added 195 photos before I realized that if I sort them by another column, the photos don't move with the sort!! I'm so frustrated. If my request is impossible, could you suggest another way to make an inventory on my Mac that will let me sort by different columns? Thank you!
@@GayellenJohnson Yes. My images were not anchored in the spreadsheet, so clicked on each image, coped, then pasted into the cell. Now the images stay with the correct rows when I sort them. Thanks so much for your help!
When you place an image into Numbers, is the image embedded into the file - which would increase the file size? Or is the image linked so that you can reference the actual image file on your desktop? Adobe Illustrator gives you the option to embed or link images, so I wanted to know if Numbers - as well as Pages, Keynote and Freeform - does too.
Hi Gary, I am using lookup with a symbol. I can call each text symbol. How can I call the background image. I have the spreadsheet column 1 - 2♣, 🃒 , image. I can manipulate each image but I want to use the background instead of the text. I seen you used a shape. Can the shape be called in this instance. I haven't tried that yet
Hi Gary, I am new to Mac. I would like to add my small business logo to cover across 10 columns and 5 rows. At the same time I would like to lock it so when scrolling down the logo still stays in place. i that possible or just wishful thinking?
If you want a logo that big, I would suggest adding it to the sheet itself, not inside a table. If you have some special reason you want it in a table, you can always merge those cells and then add it as a background to the whole merged cell. But you can't make it lock when scrolling unless that happens to be the 5 rows that are part of the header.
Is there a way for users of the spreadsheet to temporarily view a larger version of the image (by clicking on it or some other means) and then it go back to the regular thumbnail type size?
No, there's nothing like that in Numbers. But you can link to a file if you are willing to put in a lot of work ruclips.net/video/I8PAWVWm9h8/видео.html
I need to create an inventory of a set of historic documentary photos as I wish to transfer the copyright for them and an inventory is needed. Unfortunately this video did not help me at all. Being able to do the things presented in the video is not relevant to me, alas! I want to know if I can copy, say, 100 pictures, sized to be thumbnails, and get them to flow into a column of cells or if I have to do a tedious 'Insert' for each image. Something as basic as this is not showing up in Searches I have been doing. Now I will have to explore myself!
No. Images are just cell backgrounds in Numbers. I don't know of a good way to do what you want. Maybe in a Pages document instead? But you'd still be working with 100 images and it will take a lot of work.
Many thanks Gary for clarifying the situation with Numbers. I found the same problem in Pages. I have over a 1000 images to log and possibly have found a solution, still time-consuming but not as bad as doing an Insert action over and over again, plus having to put the filename in another column. Using Finder Icon view, arrange the image thumbnails with their filenames as I need, take a screenshot of the assembly, convert the png in Preview to be PDF, open the first one in Preview and add subsequent PDFs so that I get a single PDF document. As there are so many images, I would likely create several Inventory docs rather than one gigantic one. The files have to be part of the copyright transfer document as an Appendix I presume.
@@Video2Webb If you want that, why not bring them all into Photos (create a new local library just for this project) and then use the Print function in Photos to print a contact sheet?
Depends on what you want to do, specifically. Many database things can be done in spreadsheets, but some things cannot and others are more difficult. There are a few database apps in the App Store if you look.
@@macmost Thank you. Do you have any experience with Ninox? Do you feel that a graphic designer without any coding experience could happily use Ninox as a replacement for Bento to track clients, prospects, projects, contracts, invoicing and payments?
Without knowing for sure, I'm certain that Numbers cannot do this. It just seems like something only Excel could do. ...can Numbers pull an image from a website into Numbers on Mac? I have a column of hyperlinks that go to different profile pics. I'd like to pull those images into specific cells so staff don't have to click on the hyperlink to see who is who.
Not sure what you are asking. Are you looking to add scans of paper into your Numbers documents? I would scan them but keep them as PDFs or images as files elsewhere. Just have the data (date, amount, etc) in the spreadsheet table.
You can do this with the “Image Gallery” function. It allows you to add pictures from your library, scan receipts, or take new pictures. And you can just keep adding to it and scroll through them. I use this feature for an HSA expenses database I created, and scan all the medical receipts.

You can also hide the image by conditional highlighting the cell.
Oh right now to do this on a phone.

Right. That's not something Numbers does.
After you place an image inside a cell, in addition to resizing the image, can you also move it around inside the cell like you can inside a shape? Or is it only centered?
No, you are very limited with what you can do as it is just a cell background, not the contents of a cell.

You can't use the background in formulas, only the numbers or text that make up the value in the cell.
