This is the story of Milunka Savić that inspired our song Lady of the Dark. Milunka Savić was a Serbian woman who took her brother’s place in the army. Partly disguised as a man, she would eventually be among the most decorated soldiers of WW1!

She worked as a houskeeper and adopted 3 girls, have one of her one, take more than 30 kids- orfans from whole Serbia, to feed them and took them to school in Belgrade. She raised more than 34-35 children all alone. Her housband died at young age. She never complained nor wanted to go to live inabroad, even if Franch government gave her aportunity to do so. Milunka saved her brother, saved Serbian people honor, showed how one women and patriot can be human, brave and humble at the same time. One true heroine! Večna joj slava i veliko hvala za sve!
What they didn't mention in the video is Milunka's greatest accomplishments were forcing huge numbers of enemy troops to surrender. She was notorious for capturing up to 10-20 troops at once.

Her brother received call up papers for the 1st Balkan War, he was sick with TB. She chose to go in his place.
She was eligible to receive a French Army pension , if she moved to France. She turned down the offer, choosing to live in Serbia.

To add an insult to injury, she survived a Nazi concertation camp in WW2.
That’s AFTER she refused a dinner invitation from the Nazis and the Serbian collaborationists which would have likely resulted in her being used for propaganda. They threw her in there as punishment. Absolutely and unfathomably strong on the battlefield and off.
@@mileshill7196 Exactly. Fun fact: she was freed from the camp by the German CO, when he realized who she was. She spent about a year in that camp.
After the breakthrough of the Thessaloniki front, an army of 700,000 soldiers was thrown out of the war, and Germany ordered a general retreat. Emperor Wilhelm, outraged, sent a telegram to the Bulgarian emperor: "62,000 Serbian soldiers have decided to go to war. Shame!"
It was recorded that the Bulgarian soldiers, seeing the Serbian soldiers, whom they thought were finished in 1915, attacking, threw down their weapons and ran away shouting that "the dead are coming".
62.000 Serbian soldiers have decided THE WAR, not "to go to war".
She survived until 1973, making it a 50-year anniversary of her death this year, which is one of the reasons they let yarn hub animate it, and it is my favourite song from The album

Milunka Savić joined the army instead of her brother. at that time women could not be soldiers. She skillfully disguised herself as a woman until she was wounded the third time. when they bandaged her, they saw that she was female. She was wounded a total of 9 times. After the war, France offered to live and be an honorary citizen of France, she refused and remained living a modest life in Serbia. It should also be said that Milunka is the woman in the world most decorated with medals for bravery and participation in battles.
There is documentary about her Milunka Savic: Heroine of the Great War from 2013
I saw them perform this live, last fall. It was incredibly amazing. One great feeling of unity, hearing everyone belt the lyrics as loud as possible in the audience. And the song was relatively new at the time. It was an evening highlight.

I literally tear up whenever I see this video. My village is on Kolubara river. I remember as a kid, my late grandfather had piece of metal that he was using as makeshift anvil. That piece of metal was artillery shell from WW1 xD It's top was split open as it exploded but bottom was good and flat, but now when I look back at it, that was an artifact from kolubara battles, not an anvil :/ I need to check with my uncle if it's still somewhere around.

A ima par dokumentaraca i predstava. A zasto nema film? To je komplikovano pitanje sa vise mogucih odgovora. Jedan od odgovora je da Srbija moze da izgura 1-2 velika filmska projekta godisnje a ima 100 tema za koje se ljudi pitaju zasto nije snimljen film, drugi bi mogao biti da niko nije uspeo da napise dovoljno dobar scenario. Relativno je lako baciti pare i napraviti film ali je na taj nacin tesko napraviti dobar film. Kreativnost, nadahnuce i inspiracija ne mogu da se naruce.

Great reaction. :) I would not like Hollywood(especially Netflix) attempting to make a film based on her story though, given the fact on how much they tend to mess up lately, especially when it comes to historical films and shows.
So If they ever decide to go for a film or show about Milunka Savić(which is highly unlikely anyway), I hope they will at least do some research and do it faithfully without further "enhancements". xD

she is from my country. but there are a lot of things that are not shown about her she enlisted as a male to replace her brother and enlisted as a male her war career begins in the first balkan war in 1912 and she was wounded more than 24 times and she is the only woman who captured herself The 24 Bulgarian soldiers were most importantly not alone, there were 3 other women who were awarded many times.
I concur this definitely needs to be a movie. I can honestly think of no woman that could fit the world best other than Gina Carano.
There is a movie about the Christmas Truce called "Joyeux Noel" (2005) meaning merry christmas in french. It is a french film but each character speaks their native language so subtitles are required anyways.
The exact people are fictional but they were heavily inspired by actual documented accounts of the truce, its about the truce and the struggles they had with continuing the war after it knowing what the "enemy" was like.
but this also needs a movie, you think will hollywood clamoring for trying to get strong female characters into franchise they would jump at the opportunity to make a film about such an amazing real like hero.

The term no man's land in serbian is "ničija zemlja" which translates as nobody's land, it's not gender specific. So that sentence in our language wouldn't make sense

I was just trying to give some "depth" on the phrase. It's a bit cheesy, it's a bit fun, probably created by some American that liked the story and it's okay.
You are absolutely right that it doesn't work in Serbian language but it's not a big "problem", it's more for some people to create an aura of legend around the woman. I am sure that if a tv show or film was made by Netflix or Disney or whatever, something cheesy like that would be used so it's fine. It doesn't subtract from her.

There are over 330 million people in the US, I'm sure that they have plenty of people of whom they could make movies or shows. Let our heroes rest. And I'm not trying to be disrespectful by any means here. But we really wouldn't wanna see the memory of someone like her get distorted, especially by Hollywood or Netflix

There are so many ppl who deserves a movie but they aren't from usa. What was that sniper movie? i think it was called american sniper...tragic story for sure. Count 170 something i think. As a finn white death would be good movie or Lauri Törni or at least do movie about dude who went to Auschwitz. But nooo Let's make cgi shit about ppl who can fly over and over again by cartoons.
