  • Sutekh?! Doctor Who: The Legend of Ruby Sunday poses the question of Who Is Ruby's Mum but never actually gives us an answer, instead we get the answer to a "mystery" that fans solved a month ago and new viewers won't have any tangible idea of what it even means. Yay?

      I only started with Doctor Who with Eccleston so when that "reveal" dropped I was like, "Who the f is that?"
      I was so surprised when I looked up Sutekh to see he'd been in ONE episode? This entire episode felt like a huge fan service wank for the die-hards. While I'm happy they got what they needed, anyone else watching this series long since checked out. They're laying in this pipeline with the Susan Twist BS, and then it turns out she's just a minion, and it makes no sense why she'd be Bad Wolf'd throughout time and space. How is this Sutekh dude "The One Who Waits"?
      I'd be interested to hear if any of the casual viewers felt any exposition or foreshadowing of this Sutekh guy, cause I saw no lead up to this big day and frankly, it's made me irrationally mad at this show.

    Can only speak from my own experience but when the master reveal happened back in Series 3 I had no idea who that character was yet that still worked, I feel very much the same about this episode as the speech at the end practically tells you all you need to know. Also it is quite worth remembering this is a 1 of 2 and RTDs 1 of 2 finales usual raise more questions than answers. For example you don’t find out what Bad Wolf is in the episode titled ‘Bad Wolf’ you get that the week after in Parting of the ways. I genuinely think that due to people getting used to binge watching shows now a days that certain people have forgotten that the first part of two part stories are 9 times out of 10 mostly set up and exposition, due to the fact that usually they can just go ahead and click the next episode. -Just my two cents on the matter (I know no one asked 😂😂)

      @burgunbeerd  Месяц назад +5

      i asked for your two cents at the end of the video so thankyou! ahah. I feel like the Master reveal worked even if you didn't know the Master because hes another timelord but bad vs this being another big bad god thats bigger and badder than the last even though so far the 2 gods we've seen have been beaten by a game of catch and a musical diddy.
      Like when Voldemort rocks up you know hes an evil strong wizard compared to if god rocked up in harry potter.
      Unsure if that explanation works but yeah, its how we feel at least

    • @CptFailius
      @CptFailius Месяц назад +5

      @@burgunbeerd I completely see your point there however I would like to say Voldemort is a bad example, I mean he’s the only franchise villain I know of that actually struggled to kill a child on multiple occasions - but that’s a whole other ball game 😂
      I do agree it is strange how these previous Gods have been defeated but it has been established as to why (Ridiculous though it may be - and I suppose that’s where your suspension of disbelief has to come in) that they are beaten using essentially their own rules ie a Game and Music. Which now leads me to the thought that cause Suketh is Death then the plan to beat him would likely have to involve his own rules.
      Just an aside want to say im glad to hear different opinions on this from someone who seems to be open to different opinions instead of the channels we all know these days just being completely like it’s this and every other opinion is wrong and just denying and kind of discussion. Very good points you make. I just didn't feel as gripped as i usually do at the end of the first part of a season finale. It felt a bit like 'been there ... seen it... done it' all too rushed. Where was that special 'build the tension' episode? The Doctor just turns up at UNIT demanding to find out about this mystery woman.
      I feel it needed more of a mysterical lead in.
      BUT, rightly, as you say, a lot hangs on the last epsiode; if that is good the I won't be criticising this one ... just don't quite get the vibes that it's all going to happen in a complete well-executed way. (This was my worry when I heard there would only be the 8 episodes!).

      Compare this with how Daleks were first reintroduced in series 1 or even series 5 where neither Rose, nor Amy didn't know what it was, which made Doctor's reaction even more terrifying than this CGI with ominous voice.

    • @burgunbeerd
      @burgunbeerd  Месяц назад +8

      Dalek had an entire episode devoted to a single Dalek and its impact on the Doctor and his development and is one of the best ever episodes.
      Cybermen had an origin story via Cybus industries and the episode itself was more focused on Rose and Pete's world than it was the big reveal of the Cybermen.
      The Master, as we say in the video, has several episodes devoted to the Master and concepts surrounding him not to mention the arguable 3 season build up towards it.
      The toymaker was out of nowhere yes. But it was also part of the 60th anniversary specials not "season 1"
      That's our point. As explained in the video.

    And very basic lack of knowledge/disrespect towards William Hartnell. The guy suffered from undiagnosed arteriosclerosis, which caused him to have trouble pronouncing words and learning his lines. It’s what eventually killed him, aged just 67. The guy had a horrible life, brought up my a single mother in the 1920s in absolute poverty. If it wasn’t for his commitment and effort, there wouldn’t be a Doctor Who today for you to moan about. Also, the character of Susan wasn’t included just so she could talk for Hartnell, she was included to appeal to younger viewers (the character was said to be around 15 at the time it was screened). Early Who wasn’t just Science Fiction, it was meant to be educational, that’s why the 2 companions at the start were teachers (Ian science, Barbara history). It’s also why there are stories in the early seasons about Marco Polo, The Romans, Aztecs and the French Revolution. Zero respect for a show that you think youre critiquing, but you’re actually just bitching.

    Great review, you highlighted some issues I couldn't quite put my finger on when watching the episode. The biggest issue is surely that the Osirans need an explanation. I seem to recall a great little prologue in the Pyramids novelisation that contained a crucial backstory to the war and Sutekh's imprisonment. The finale does indeed need to explain a lot! There will undoubtedly be some tie-in to the Doctor's granddaughter (who was left on a devastated earth in the future), Sutekh's earlier encounter and escape from his prison, Ruby's backstory, how Sutekh and the other 'Gods' interrelate, the mystery of Mrs Flood (who I don't really care about at all)...just to name a few! I feel that RTD has thrown way too much into the mix, and has relied on social media and Who lore to avoid explaining it all coherently. The season should be self-contained, and explanations like regeneration kept as sparse as possible. Everything seems too over-done here. While Sutekh may provide some great continuity and a Marvel-like threat, the whole reason why Sutekh was so formidable and frightening was the threat was established well in the storytelling, with some human cost but wisely, Robert Holmes constrained the villain in order to tease his power.

    It's alright that the Fandom figured out the twists beforehand, since that usually means that they were properly set up. The bigger problem was that the Fandom figured it out, not through the show but through behind the scenes, meta stuff and social media instead of through hints in the show.

    • @lowriderbug
      @lowriderbug Месяц назад

      This is a problem across many shows. The money people just want the show made in 6-8 episodes because each episode costs millions to make so the days of having multiple episodes to build background and narratives are gone. Look at game of thrones season 1 and 2 were all explanation and world building before the battle for the city at the end of season 2 then seasons 3 and 4 upped the pace of the stories. Season five was the start of battles only taking an episode when in season 2 it would be spread over 4 episodes. The last season was so rushed trying to answer all the questions the show had that it was a completely different show.

    I just double checked Sutekhs wiki entry, since it's been a long time since I last saw how Tom Baker defeated him, and it turned out that Sutekh was trapped in a time corridor. Could there be a relation of some sort with time corridors and time windows? Could Sutekh have needed that to help him escape the time corridor? Assuming none of the expanded media tales about him count.
    The thing that really gets me is that we have an 8 episode season which is apparently being filmed at the same time as the next season, which is also apparently 8 episodes, so 16 in total. It almost feels like we're basically getting half a season when looked at in that light. The flow of the overall story doesn't seem to gel quite right for me, although as individual episodes I've mostly liked what I've seen. I can still see some ways certain episodes could have been improved on a bit more in terms of their own story structure, but I think had this been a standard 13 episode season, or even the combined 16 episodes of both seasons, we could have had more development on both the Doctor and Rubys relationship, had maybe a little more fun with Mrs Flood and maybe had the Doctor look up on some of the god related adventures he's had in the past to see if he could figure out who the Toymaker was hinting at.

    This is how it felt to me as well. The audience was interested in meta stuff like background details and anagrams, but the doctor only noticed her on 2 occasions. If you ask me, they COULD have had Ruby remember Kate and that trigger her remembering 73 Yards and that abandonment + Susan Twist could have resulted in RUBY always noticing her and tying that to her abandonment and then Gatwa - who should NEVER have seen her - goes "hmm, a woman I've never seen and a woman you've constantly seen. We should investigate." I just needed some lead in discussion for that. And then it's good suspense but it's all 'that stuff the internet noticed' and then 'the stuff the internet worked out but the episode itself didn't earn narratively'.
    Like at the end of the day, WHY was Susan Twist those people? Dreams? That's a copout. Why was she Sutekh of all people specifically? The anagram was the only real clue, nothing about her character was relevant. She was just some lady who happened to be whichever God RTD wanted her to be. It's not bad that it's predictable, it feels predictable for the wrong reasons; all meta stuff and very little character development.

    I still don't know where I stand with Rose as a character. Different elements in the Star Beast like the "Male Presenting Timelord" line left a sour taste when it comes to her character. Although if this was my first introduction to Rose Noble and not the Star Beast, I probably would be more onboard with her. Mind You, it did feel like she was just there in this story. Didn't really have that much to do. Probably one too many characters involved in this episode which is not exactly a bad thing but it does mean it's a struggle to make sure everyone has enough to do in this story. Mel was fantastic in this, Bonnie is firing on all cylinders here. The reveal of Sutekh was definitely good as well.

    I feel like this is just the unfortunate side effect of having a show with 60+ years of history. Sure, I had little memory of Sutekh but it felt big... introducing other god-like figures for the past episodes as well as subtle hints and references to his first appeared was the best they could do. It could've been Rani or Omega and you'd still have some fans not aware of the character due to lacking screentime and presence.
    I feel like this worked because it makes sense, he was stuck at the edge of the time...saw Donna and 14...latched on...and was thusly allowed to exist once more. It's simple but a character like Sutekh makes sense to come back... they're really fucking bitter and they did swear to 4 that they'd destroy the cosmos...now they get to unleash that promise onto 15.

    Sutekh (or Set) is an evil god in ancient Egyptian mythology. He's not the creation of Doctor Who. I don't think you need to know who he is to appreciate the episode. It's explained by Harriet:
    _"There is the Toymaker, the god of games. There is Trickster, the god of traps. There is Maestro, the god of music." … "And standing on high is the mother and father and other of them all. His name has been Set. And Seth. And Sithifer. And his one true name for evermore is Sutekh! Sutekh is the god of death, and by his hand, all creation shall fall into dust and ashes and ruin."_

      You can have all that tension and build up, then the villain is just some guy in a robe or suit and can shoot energy or whatever from his hands.
      But this reveal? You can tell when it starts as Kate turns, sharp end to the score, then Harbinger starts. Builds up, lists off other gods, then Sutekh. His design is perfect. Its not just some guy or the TARDIS or someone said "a giant head poking out of the TARDIS".

    What is RTD's strategy here, because he seems to be contradicting himself?
    I gave up with Doctor Who at the end of the Capaldi era - I watched the first few episodes of the Whittaker era but decided then it wasn't for me because of poor quality stories.
    No, I am not going to complain about DEI, leftists or w*ke because I don't need to go to that depth - it just wasn't very good storytelling any longer, like many other pieces of media, including a lot written by and starring only straight people. Gender or political leanings have nothing to do with whether or not a piece of media is good or bad, it is *just* about good storytelling.
    I got told at that time that Doctor Who is no longer for an "old bloke" like me - that's fine, I can move on and go do something else.
    Now we're in the Gatwa era, I'm told it's even less for me because it's "Season 1" of a new reboot - again, fine with me. I just stay here "on the periphery" patiently waiting to see if there' s something new to bring be back into Doctor Who once again - nothing yet.
    But why then does RTD reveal the main villain as Sutekh, which only an old bloke like me could appreciate fully from way back in the original series? Why would the "genx-er" target audience of modern Doctor Who have any clue about who Sutekh is anyway?

      @@fireblade295 It looks like rubbish writing, as it has for some years now. I started to get concerned during the last year of Capaldi's tenure and got halfway through Whittaker's first season before stopping right there.
      I could give a toss about "representation" or "w*ke" because I'm old enough to remember bad storytelling in TV shows and movies when they were entirely written and starring "straight white males".
      Bad storytelling is just bad storytelling, at which point I shrug my shoulders and go do something else. The same was true for me with Star Trek and Star Wars to a lesser extent - enjoy the good bits, ignore the bad bits and don't give them your money to encourage them to keep churning out rubbish.
      But I find great hilarity in watching the whiners on both sides attacking each other, and poking them occasionally for my own amusement.
      The thing is, when you "extremists" do it on RUclips, you get views and monetisation for it. So it's in both your interests to ensure that conflict keeps going...

    "Meaningless reveal?" Was it meaningless when the Master first returned? Viewers not familiar with classic DW had no idea who he was but they caught up. Stop whining.

      In my opinion, you can't call yourself a true fan or expert on Who, if you haven't seen anything from the classic series
