Some people are telling you to watch the 60th specials... I don't know what's your plan for Doctor Who after season 1, but I wouldn't recommend watching those, because there's some heavy spoilers for someone that is already familiarised enough with the show. I think that, after season 1 you should go back to the 2005 series 1 episode 1, the episode called "Rose" and watch it normally from there.

I actually only noticed this small thing after another reactor pointed it out, but Harriet actually cries a little bit during their monologue while talking about how all creation would fall.

Your breakdown of how regeneration works was pretty spot on. The Doctor has all the same memories and a lot of the same core emotions and personality traits every time. Regeneration changes the whole body, including brain chemistry, so it can affect personality. It's why some Doctors are more playful, less sociable, or have different likes or dislikes. At the core, though, it's always the same person.

    • @Look_Over_There
      @Look_Over_There 24 дня назад

Also although its up for debate wether it was canon as it was only mentioned once back in 2009 but, from the time lords perspective it actually feels like dying, they die and a regenerated version with all their memories carries on but the previous version's consciousness actually dies.

For context: UNIT has been a thing in Doctor Who since 1968, originally run by Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, and run by his daughter Kate Stewart since 2012. The Doctor's granddaughter Susan was a companion from 1963-64. Mel Bush was a companion from 1986-87. The current UNIT tower and many of the staff were introduced last year. Sutekh is a returning villain from 1975. Some of the mentioned gods have appeared before, some haven't, but them being actual gods is a new concept. If you want to see more of the show, I'd recommend starting from the 2005 series 1.

I have a crazy theory about all the 4th wall breaking. The One Who Waits is supposed to be coming from beyond the veil of the universe, and whenever the Toymaker or the Maestro or Mrs Flood breaks the 4th wall they’re talking to him and all the other gods and monsters beyond that veil. Our screen is the boundary between their universe and ours. I also definitely think Ruby is from beyond that veil and her presence has been slowly prying open a door so they can all come through. Mrs Flood could be actual Susan, or she could have been sent to keep Ruby safe for The One Who Waits.

Very nice seeing you experience your first season 😁
To answer a few of your questions:
    - The Doctors granddaughter Susan was the very first companion of the series all the way back in 1963! He left her on earth in a particular episode, and has only met her again once under very special circumstances in his 5th incarnation in the mid 80s.
    - The Doctor always regenerates on-screen, he/she has done it 16 (technically 17) times now (15 "Doctors", one "War Doctor", and one aborted regeneration)
    - Sutekh is a very old villian from the 4th Doctors era in the mid 70s, from one of his best episodes
    - Mel is an old companion of the 6th and 7th Doctors from the 80s
    - Time Lords have been known to use a device called a chameleon arch to lock their true selves away and hide in plain sight as a human with false memories, a major Time Lord character has previously done this in conjunction with a regeneration.
    - Kate Stewart is the daughter of Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, who was a major character all throughout the 2nd through 7th Doctors run in the classic series.
    - Gods mentioned like The Trickster and The Mara have indeed been villains in the past also.
    - The TARDIS is not just a machine, but a living thinking entity with a soul 😁
I hope you have tones of fun with the series going forward.

Yeah some of those characters at UNIT have been there before. Rose is a character from the three specials in 2023, and her mum was a companion of a previous Doctor. Mel (the redhead) was the Doctor’s companion in the 80s and the actress is an absolute legend of stage and screen in the UK. Kate (the leader of UNIT) has been in it quite a few times over the years starting way back in about 2012 with Matt Smith’s Doctor so she’s been a constant through five Doctors now. Her character’s dad also worked for UNIT and worked with the Doctor in the 70s and 80s. I think the others are mostly new characters!

Sutekh's been waiting for a LONG time. So (non-spoilers) backstory for Sutekh:
During the dark times, before order and light in the time of blood and darkness and the power of words, the God Ra split their essence into 3 seperate entities to better protect the great flame. These were Iris, Osiris and Sutekh. However, the power of the flame was not enough for Sutekh's ambition and he saw his siblings, and the deciples of light, as rivals to his power, coming to belive that all life was a potential threat and thus his enemy.
Secretly at first, Sutekh bided his time honeing his power and following. Osiris became suspicious, but one day the Great Demon, only known as the Destoyer, returned to the universe and the Triad of gods were forced to overlook their suspicions toward one another to banish him to another dimension. It was Sutekh who delivered the winning blow to the Demon, further cementing his delusions of superiority, but halting his siblings actions against him briefly enough for Sutekh to finally make his move.
And so began the Ghost Wars, later renamed by the Timelords as the first great time war. During this war, the wake of Sutekh's destruction spawned evils such as the hoards of the original great vampires which then allied themselves with the Carionite witches and Deathsmiths of Goth to wage war on a more mortal scale. Here, the early Timelords led by Rassilon joined the deciples of light and swore to destroy the spawn of Sutekh.
Taking on the title of the Destoyer, Sutekh ravaged reality spreding his gift of death, with extensions of his will manifesting as more seperate entities such as the Beast. This forced those members of the Pantheon of discord, who hadn't yet been banished from the universe or punished along with the eternals, into hiding.
(I'm skipping quite a bit, theres a lot here with Anubis and the Trickster etc)
Sutekh was eventually nerfed and contained. Held prisoner within a Pyramid on a planet that would later be known as Mars. There, Sutekh the Destoyer waited for millennia, falling into obscurity. The Pyramid would be found again by the native Marshians, but the evil deep inside was so strong that they could physically sense it, so forbade exploration into it.
That's all I can give on Sutekh without going into spoilers for classic who. I could give more about the time between his TV appearances, but I'd have to spoil the end of a certain story to do so, so I won't. Hope this helps clear up a little bit?

So there are a lot of old Who references here, Sutekh was last in the Fourth Doctor episode 'Pyramid of Mars.' Where Sutekh was imprisoned under a pyramid, trapped by a energy field beamed from Mars. He killed then animated the corpse an archeologist named Marcus Scarman, who first uttered the line "I bring Sutekh's gift of death.' He was defeated by the Doctor when he used a space time tunnel to leave the pyramid after he was freed, the Doctor used part of the Tardis to move the end of the tunnel into the far future aging Sutekh's physical body out of existence after thousands of years. His classic line when challenged by the Doctor for using his powers for evil "Evil? Your evil is my good. I am Sutekh the Destroyer. Where I tread, I leave nothing but dust and darkness...I find that good!" This was also the first episode where the Doctor confirmed changing the future was possible, when asked why they couldn't just leave cause they knew the world didn't end in 1911, the Doctor moves the Tardis to 1980 to show a blasted rock where nothing lived. "You mean the future can be chosen?" "Not chosen shaped, it takes a being of Sutekh's almost limitless power to destroy the future."

They named a bunch of previous enemies, toymaker, maestro, trickster, reprobate, Mara, and then a bunch of related that might line up to other enemies.
In the end I don't think you necessarily have to have watched the classic episodes to get, though they do help. I think they set it up wonderfully easy to understand.
"And standing on high, is the mother and father and other of them all. For the God of all God's has returned, and his names are many. His name has been Set, and Seth, and Sithifer, and his once true name forever more is Sutekh"
Sutekh/Set/Seth is the Egyptian God of death, deserts, storms, disorder, and violence. He is the usurper who murdered and mutilated his brother Osiris to take control. He brings death with him wherever he goes.

rose noble, the girl the doctor immediately ran up and hugged, is sort of the doctor's niece (in that found-family sense, you know); the daughter of a previous companion. they consider each other close family anyway.
mel was also a former companion, from really late in the classic series; she has been popping up again just recently. she's a computer programmer, though she didn't really get a chance to do much of it her first time around. 😅 as another former companion like her mum, rose also considers her sort of a mad aunt.
in egyptian mythology, sutekh (or set, seth; you know how the original writing has all these slightly different readings) is actually the father of anubis-so you're right on track. he also appears in the classic series, just the once but in a really famous and well-regarded serial. it's enough to know that he was one of the most dangerous and frightening things the doctor has faced-and that was when sutekh was trapped, immobilized, frozen. but now he's free.

oh, and about regeneration and the "susan" speculation early on: what the doctor was saying was, it was maybe possible that his granddaughter susan had regenerated in such a way as to hide herself-even *from* herself-thereby explaining to ruby why he didn't immediately know her on sight, and more broadly suggesting why he couldn't be sure if she had or hadn't survived the genocide and didn't really know where to begin looking for her.

For those who don't know, Sutekh fought Tom Baker's fourth doctor in the Pyramids of Mars storyline. Based on the egyptian god Set, he is one of the few beings who can change future time, like Maestro did but on a greater scale. Originally imprisoned on Mars by other egyptian god allusions (an alien race called Osirans) including his brother Horus, he used a man obsessed with egypt to bring his army of robo-mummies to 1911 earth and then free him. He was supposed to have died of old age in that story, so him being back is weird.

I'd argue that if he is planning to go back to the 2005 revival after the finale, that he'd be better waiting to watch the 3 specials. There's some direct tie-ins here, but he seems to be picking up on the things he's missed rather than just be oblivious. I think the specials contains far too many spoilers for anyone not familiar with the 2005 era of the show.

    • @TheLexaBlack
      @TheLexaBlack 25 дней назад +4

@@SeeJay81 That's my take as well. While there are some things that would be clearer from watching Star Beast, Wild Blue Yonder, and The Giggle, they also contain some spoilers for some big events up to that point. It's also enough to have picked up on the groaning sounds of the TARDIS. Anything else, if the Doctor seems to know whatever characters, that's (mostly) probably enough till caught up with the 2005 series till now.
Anything more than those 3 (though not mentioned in bobfather7355's comment or replies to it), maybe trusted sources to advise, "Here's some episodes of Classic Who you probably should squeeze in." If that's something he'd be interested in doing. Those all caught up will know which episodes are more or less essential, but care must be taken to avoid spoilers. Because the classic run combined with 2005 Revival Who (and 2023/24 Who) kind of sounds a lot longer than it is to someone casually looking, when not factoring in episode count and individual runtime vs story count and total runtime. And even then, that's a lot more catching up to do it all.
Particularly when this season and next were shot so close together, and probably won't be a huge gap as it's been in some cases previously. The other thing to consider is a reactor's release schedule for whatever series (or multiple ones) at the same time, and how much time they can commit to it while not negatively impacting their lives or livelihoods.

Rose is Donna’s daughter who was companion to the 10th Doctor. She met up with him again in his 14th incarnation. All the faces that doing around him in the Rogue episode are his prior faces (the past actors have taken the role). Sutekh met the 4th Doctor and fan favorite companion in the 1975 episodes Pyramids of Mars. It’s actually story where an archaeologist stumbles upon Sutekh tomb, and becomes his avatar. When you go back and watch those episodes, you see a lot of Easter eggs that were embedded in this series telling you exactly what was coming; verbiage, even scenes that are almost identical. It was being telegraphed all along, who the big bad was going to be.
Susan fell in love and the 1st Doctor locked her out of the Tardis telling her she deserved her own life basically… that was 1964 series. Carol Ann Ford who played Susan is still alive so if they are going to bring her back for a regeneration scene, they likely should do it soon as she’s in her 70s or 80s now. She played as a teenager in her early 20s.

Sutekh and The Toymaker have appeared in classic Who in the 1960s and 70s, and a few beings with god-like powers have popped up, who were actually advanced aliens. Maestro is a new creation. Doctor Who is not usually about gods. I think the premise of this season is that, thanks to one of the more recent special episodes from 2023, the walls of reality have been broken and now gods from beyond the universe have been allowed in.
The Doctor, in spite of all the faces and forms he has taken, is always a continuation of the same character and - yes - all but a couple of them have been seen to regenerate onscreen.
Although the character is always the same person, the regeneration process is such a jumbling process that the personality of each Doctor is usually very distinct unto itself. You never know what he's going to be like. It's one of the ways that the show stays so fresh over the decades.
