Henry vanstatten was in 1999’s The Mummy. He was one of the Americans in the other group :) Also the Dalek in this episode is amazing. ❤ the Daleks are staples in classic who :) Also I like to think that George Lucas was influenced by doctor who and the Daleks for some of star wars’ aliens and ideas. Similarly to star trek.

They did such a good job of making Van Staten such a twat that you’re actually disappointed that the Dalek doesn’t kill him

Yeah, this episode HAD to be this dynamic and explosive (literally). It was the show returning after a roughly 15 year absence (the last episode of the Classic show broadcast 6th December 1989). So the episode HAD to do well, otherwise the new show would not have lasted very long at all. Yes there was the TV Movie in 1996, but that is the equivalent of a single episode, so I don't count it in the 15 year absence between Classic and New Who. Also, Classic Who DOES have missing episodes, but only the first 6 seasons, encompassing the first two doctors (seasons 3 and 4 are particularly hit bad by missing episodes, like genuinely). There are a few ways to watch the missing episodes, if you're interested. Also those first 6 seasons were broadcast during the 60s, so were shown in black and white. Seasons are also split up into serials. For example, some serials have 2 parts, some have 3, a lot have 4, some have 5, a lot have 6, some have 7, ONE has 8 (The Invasion), one has 10 (The War Games), and the biggest serial has 12 parts to it (The Daleks' Master Plan) (technically 13 if you include the prequel episode, 'Mission To The Unknown'). If you wanna know any more info on Classic Who at all, i'm your person to ask. You seem cool tho, so you've earned a sub. Lovely seeing people watching the show I grew up on for the first time (I was watching since about 2006/2007, during Series 2 and 3).

Not sure if you read comments on some older episodes like this - but in general it's good you went back into the 2005 series. Personally it will be good to catch up from there and to potentially watch new episodes when they come next year, simultaneously. There was also a chance you should have started with the old Who - but especially the oldest episodes are sometimes hard to find and commonly really lengthy to watch (some stories back then were released as long 4 parts episodes that really dragged with a filler content). And some are kinda boring by modern standards (like it is old TV after all). And I'm not sure if they would even do good on YT. It's good to go for 2005, because it also references the old times and it's much palatable to watch. And you can slowly watch some iconic old Who episodes from time to time to learn more about the past, at the same time having the action go fast with the nuWho. Especially as you get a new reference to the old times - sometimes it's worth watching the original episode when a specific character or a villain is shown. Comment section probably will recommend you all the fun episodes every now and then, and personally - when it comes to old Who - I would go for it, instead of potentially waiting for the time where you are finished with nuWho and newest Who and starting once again from episode 1 of the old Who. There are some stories and Doctors worth watching in order, but show also has been really episodical sometimes, so it's not a big issue to jump around through those 40+ years of old Who. I wouldn't skip anything in the nuWho though, even if episodes are bad - it kinda let's you appreciate some other episodes. Especially as some of the "bad episodes" actually sometimes have a second side to them. And everyone also Hs different tastes and sensibilities. One person's trash may be other person's treasure.

I had forgotten how great Doctor Who could be after having to sit through the recent seasons. What an episode. Why can't we get anything close anymore.

The TARDIS key is just a regular key really to open the police box doors it's only made into a story depending on whose writing it it's not a big plot point.

It's considered one of the fan favourites but for me not my favourite it feels too soap opery for me.

I haven't watched this episode for such a long time, so watching it again with you I really enjoyed it, since this episode aired people in my life have gone and I was really in a mess watching this, I always felt emotional over this episode but suddenly I was a blubbering mess 😢 can't wait for you to watch more of my favourite episodes.. 👍
